Set high in the snowy mountains, the Thredbo Cannonball MTB Festival is always a ‘must visit’ on Australia’s busy event calendar and has a reputation not only for its party atmosphere and good vibes, but also for the caliber of riders competing for a boatload of cash. Held over three days with five different races, consistency is key for ending up with the title of 'King or Queen of Cannonball'.
With the Cannonball here, it seemed apt that the recently formed Lusty Mountain Bike Team should kick things off, whilst doing their best to take most of the podium spots up for grabs.
For 2015/16, the team comprises of some of Australia’s most exciting and established gravity riders. Headed up by Johnny McLean, Lusty Industries is the exclusive distributor for many Moto and Mountain Bike products including Santa Cruz Bicycles and Troy Lee Designs. Based out of Newcastle, New South Wales, the team brings together that perfect combination of out-and-out riding ability with the style and class these brands have come to represent.
Your Lusty Team riders for 2015/16 are:Remy Morton; Gold Coast QLD - @remymortonComing off a strong year with the UR Team in 2015, Remy has style and speed in spades. Just as comfortable shredding jump trails on his 20” as he is throwing whips on his big rig, Remy is on track to have a strong showing in the Elites for the 2015/16 MTBA National Downhill Series as well as 2016 World Cups.
Graeme Mudd; Newcastle, NSW - @greamebobmuddA Newcastle native, Graeme comes from a background in BMX and 4X. Showing that those skills are totally transferable to both Enduro and DH, Muddy has already proved that he can hang at the top in both disciplines. Keen to stay on the podium, Greame will be also be targeting the MTBA National Dowhhill Series as well as selected World Cup and EWS rounds for 2016.
Joel Willis; Newcastle, NSW - @joelwillisJoel is currently juggling work as an apprentice builder as well as stepping up to the Elite field for 2015. Already a seasoned Australian representative, Joel will look to cement himself in the top ten for the 2015/16 National DH season.
Patrick Butler; Cessnock, NSW - @paddibutlerThe youngest member of the Lusty Team, Pat will keep building on his natural talent whilst drawing on the experience of his teammates. Look out for Pat at the National DH rounds where he will be gunning for the top step in U17.
Ricky Boyer; Newcastle, NSWOriginally hailing from the Blue Mountains Ricky is one of the legends of Australian DH racing. Also a big part of the goings on at Lusty, Boyer brings with him a wealth of experience and style to the team.
Jackie Schapel; Hobart, TAS - @jacschapsRepping Juliana bicycles Jackie will look to focus on Enduro and Stage racing for 2015 and beyond. With a solid season behind her Jackie will be targeting the local Enduro series in Australia as well as some key EWS rounds for 2016.
Race RoundupCannonball was a great weekend all round with the many of those novelty-sized cheques finding their way to the Lusty crew. Remy Morton had all the style points taking out the Pump Track and a 3rd in the ODI Whip Wars, rounding out with 8th in the DH.
Mudd was one of two team members to go for the full set of events scoring a 2nd place in both the Dual Commpressor and the Flow events and was just pipped by Thomas Crimmins for the overall title of 'King Of Cannonball'.
Joel Willis showed that he was more than ready for the Elite's with a respectable 12th in the Flow and a stomping 9th in the DH. Young gun Patty Butler almost had a clean sweep of all events in the U/17 category with a 3rd in the Flow his lowest placing out of all events. Both Ricky and Jackie were strong in the DH and Flow respectively, just not having quite the pace to make it on the podium.
Lusty Mountain bike Team would like to thank its supporters for sharing the ride:Santa Cruz Bicycles, Troy Lee Designs, Maxxis Tyres (KWT), Yakima, Maxima, SRAM, RockShox, Gamut, ODI, Ogio and Crank Brothers.
