Lizard Skins' MacAskill Signature Grips

It turns out that when you're really freaking good at riding a bike and have otherworldly balance, you get stuff named after you. Lizard Skins' new MacAskill grips don't just have Danny's name on them, however, but they're also designed exactly as he requested them to be.

That means that there's only a single locking collar on the inboard end of the grip, which is a good point to note by those who tend to ride with their hands as wide as possible on the handlebar. The sole collar also shaves weight; the MacAskill grips come in at a claimed 70-grams for the pair. C'mon, I know all you guys weigh your grips.

The shape is also slightly convex to mate with your hands, with a 29mm diameter at the outer ends that expands to around 30mm at the grip's center. They're also longer - 137mm instead of the 130mm that most grips measure in at. The MacAskill grips will be available in November of this year for $30 USD.

Cannondale Lefty Updates

The Lefty's chassis is impressively stiff, reliable, and lightweight, plus it gets bonus points for making people look twice, but I've said before that its internals don't quite match the best from other suspension brands. That's likely going to change in the future - Cannondale hired one of the main minds behind the Pike awhile back - and I got a peek at one of the first small, albeit important updates to the Lefty's insides. Nerd alert warning.

Eurobike 2016

Future Lefty struts will get a brand new air spring assembly, dubbed 2Spring, that replaces the older Solo Air unit. While the Solo Air spring employs a rubber-like MCU piece that's shaped to allow air pressure between the positive and negative chambers to self-regulate, the 2Spring version uses, you guessed it, a spring. The issue with the MCU is that the inner surface causes friction as it is squeezed down over the large diameter shaft that runs through the center of it, whereas there is obviously no friction between the spring and shaft. A wave washer was hidden just above the old Solo Air unit's plastic piston that controlled the open/close bypass valve, but there's a second coil spring doing the job on the 2Spring unit, which is where it takes its name from. Also, the piston now has a conical shape has been used because it encourages a small amount of oil to pool just above the piston seal.

This internal update is claimed to lower the strut's activation force by 7lbs but, more importantly, also makes for longer service intervals and less trouble. Leftys will come stock with the 2Spring unit moving forward, and it's also retrofittable onto older struts.

Adidas' Backland Dirt Goggle

Adidas' new Backland Dirt goggle is still a while out from being on the shelves, but they had it on display in a mud-covered display case regardless. The Backland Dirt can be fitted with a Roll-Off system if conditions require it, and you can remove the foam padding to wash it and then reattach it to the goggle's frame afterwards. No excuses anymore for smelly, dirty stuff being right up against your face.

Interesting you state paintball. I hate most MTB goggles, they condense/fog too easily. I recently started using my JT goggles that have dual pains and breath holes. These things "never" fog and/or condense. I've tried three different companies that claim their goggle pains to be fog and condensation free, to only have them fog up in the humid Oregon forest. So I've been using JT paintball dual pain goggles, and in the most humid of weather the pains stay clear and free of condensation. The paintball goggle also offers more eye protection than the standard MTB goggle because the pains are rated for safety, while MTB goggles are there to keep the mud out of your eyes.

MTB industry, you need to look at paintball goggles to solve the fog/condensation issue!

@XCMark: I don't know, not a big fan of subjecting myself to dual pains...sounds very uncomfortable.

@XCMark: Dude you are so right about this, JT made the best goggles years ago and they are still selling like hot cakes these days, same design too!! #flexforlife

@XCMark: +1 on this. Even the single pane Vforce stuff resists fog super well. But yes #flexlife

@jonsson5: Good looking out..Just took a look and these goggle looks like they are worth a try for sure. Cheers!

@jonsson5: Those look really nice, however, for the same price I can get custom color way JT Proflex goggles.

So first Adiddas releases shoes. No one liked them that much. Now they made a pair of goggles that need to be burnt to death. Adiddas... Youre fucked already
  • 17 1
But hey, it can double as paintball mask!
  • 15 1
@phalley: I just realized, will those goggles even fit in a full face helmet?
  • 11 1
The shoes rock. I love my pair of Trail Cross. Also they're in the google market for quite some time and far from "f*cked", just because you _think_ their shoes suck and this goggle is hideous (which I would second, btw).

 The shoes are good.

I've seen/worn the real ones in person without the nose piece and they not only look great but they feel awesome in a helmet. It's another big step up for Adidas. Not sure why they chose to display this model or perhaps why pinkbike chose to shoot this model but it doesn't even come close to doing the MTB goggles justice I assure you.

those trailcrosses look very good actually, and are in another universe compared to any of those new ion/mavic/shimano space boots from eurobike

I don't know what a single weight of any component of any of my three bikes. Shit I don't even know how much each bike weighs. I do know that I have extreme fun when riding each of the bikes.

Why are you all so down on leftys? They're light and torsionaly stiff. I ride a 140mm lefty max and it blows through all kinds of PA east coast gnar. I send it out once a year for service that costs less than a 100 for a complete rebuild. I'm so tired of the stupid questions on the trail about why in not afraid the wheel will fall off. It's basically a MacPherson strut that you're all riding around with in your cars. Your car wheels aren't joined on both sides. Do they fall off?? It's Ali's very similar in design to aircraft landing gear. Again do they loose their wheels on a regular basis?? No. It's not a full on DH fork but it's not meant to be. It's meant to be s light stiff easy to steer trail fork. Which is what it does.

I find the comments about the Lefty needing an addition right leg to be highly misinformed. Most likely from people that have never ridden one. It is my opinion that they are the best fork I have ever ridden. i have had forks from Fox and am currently running a Rock Shox. I would trade for a Lefty and adapter steerer in a heartbeat. Get informed people!!
  • 5 4
Yep, I own pike and fox 34s and wish I had a lefty. They steer so precise and are super stiff. Have probably had lefty's on 5-6 bikes from 2002 to 2009 models and never had a single problem. Had to open my lefty max on my old prophet to do a bearing reset (takes 3 minutes) 1 time in 3 years. never once sent any lefty in to Cannondale for service.

People who hate on lefty's have never ridden one, or are more concerned with their "image" than they are with riding and performance.
  • 2 1
How is my opinion(and joking comment) misinformed? This is not the first time something was functional, and also looked ridiculous(opinion, I know). And I have ridden on a lefty, if you weren't looking down, you wouldn't even know.
  • 8 1
Is it just me, or is there no way in hell those goggles are going to fit inside the hole in the front of my helmet....
  • 3 1
They will fit enduro helmet fine though...
  • 4 1
It's about time Cannondale addressed that air spring. The wavy washer lasts about 5 minutes on the trail before it brakes and the fork becomes a limp noodle. Dunno how many of those washers I had to replace but I still have nightmares...

Just wonder if they'll have these new air aprings as a no-cost "upgrade" for current Lefty owners??
  • 1 0
Mine is currently being replaced as a no-cost upgrade. Holler at your LBS!
  • 5 0
I assume this lefty update is one of the many reasons Cannondale brought in Mr. Boobar.
  • 2 0
The adidas goggles are close to looking like a respirator, Halo tech. Seriously, after literally eating dirt last month I'd like some face protection but not really interested in full face. How about just going all out with hockey goali mask with built in goggles.
  • 1 0
How does that coil spring compare to the negative coil in the Fox Floats pre-2015?
The coil spring, being coil will be good for only a narrow range of rider weights, unless they offer different coils. The floats suffered from reduced travel and shitty ride, due to this...
  • 2 0
Have a look at the last couple WC pics. Many Adidas athletes (i.e. Mondraker Team) were running exactly those googles in white minus the nose guard
  • 1 0
Do any other goggles have remove able and washable foam? I'd like that, unless you can just soak your goggles in soapy water with the lenses removed, and rinse them out.
  • 9 1
If you soak the frames you risk loosing all your souvenir dirt from all your trips!
  • 3 0
 Luke ---- I am your Father !
  • 3 1
So if I get this adidas gear I'll basically look like a basketball player about to play paintball. Smile
  • 8 6
 Wait...leftys are reliable?
  • 7 5
They have been quite reliable for a long time.
  • 5 4
 Reliably silly
  • 11 5
@gdnorm: Right! The only "update" a lefty needs is another F'n fork leg.
  • 2 0
@Satanslittlehelper: have you ever ruden one of their 160mm supermax's. They are really well performing forks, and are stiffer than pikes and 36s.
  • 2 1
@Niko182: Stiffer according to who? I want to see some numbers to prove this.
  • 2 0
@gdnorm: there are multiple videos showing that, a lot of people who have tried them myself included. have you even ever tried one? just like fox and RS they have their issues, but they are on par with the foxes and rs'.
  • 1 0
I have the ODI Elite Pro. That has 1 locking collar and different areas of height for your hands, so nothing new.
  • 1 1
Those D-Mac grips are goin' on my bike! Lefties should go in the garbage can.
  • 3 3
Cannondale - answering questions no one is asking.
  • 1 1
Yeah it seems like the lefty is largely gimmicky...and expensive. Anyone have some actual data to support all the marketing and fan claims about how much "stiffer" they are?
  • 3 0
@gdnorm: Ride one - they are stiff and very supple. The one I had did need a lot of servicing - too much to make me buy again - but the ride quality is superb

Where are invisible fenders made of force field??
