Magura Announces E-Bike Optimized Components

The fact that eMTBs weigh up to double that of their all-mountain counterparts is not the only issue that places a higher demand on braking components. EMTB's carry more speed everywhere and riders find themselves braking more frequently - even for uphill situations. That puts a lot of heat into the rotors and calipers, in addition to accelerated wear. Magura joins other top brake makers with two eMTB specific braking systems.

They're called "eSTOP" brakes and are based upon their existing 4-piston MT5 and 2-piston MT4 platforms, but Magura beefs up the stopping performance with their "Sport" brake pad material and two new rotors. The lower spec rotor is reinforced in the center section to ward off warping and to act as a heat sink.

The big news, however, is Magura's two-component MDR-P rotor. It's braking track is a separate piece that is dove-tailed into the spider - very similar to high performance motorcycle rotor designs. Special rivets further secure the rotor, while allowing it to expand independent of the spider, which is claimed to survive significantly higher temperatures with less deformation. Maximum performance and safety for e-bikes.

With its new eSTOP brakes, MAGURA presents two disc brakes that are specially adapted to e-bike requirements. In combination, the new SPORT pads and the MDR-C or MDR-P rotors offer increased braking power and stability for e-bikes.

The gentle pedaling support offered by e-bikes brings a smile to riders’ faces – but it also increases the weight of the bikes. It’s a lot more enjoyable riding effortlessly uphill – going downhill, however, the increased mass and higher speeds pose new challenges for rider and material. To meet the special requirements of e-bikes even better, MAGURA presents specially-optimized components to coincide with the Eurobike – MAGURA E-Bike optimized.
The eSTOP system consists of 3 components: the eSTOP brake models, optimized rotors and the new SPORT brake pad. All the components are perfectly matched to each other, offering maximum performance for the higher requirements of e-bikes.

The new rotors are specially reinforced to provide increased lateral rigidity and heat resistance with reduced vibration. For the first time, the two-piece MDR-P is now available in 220 mm diameter, offering optimum braking performance even under high continuous loads. The new rotor diameter offers 10% more braking force for the same manual force.

All components are available either individually, as eSTOP brake sets or as upgrade kits.

MT eSTOP brake models

The MT5 eSTOP and MT4 eSTOP rely entirely on components optimized for e-bikes. Both models are based on the features of the proven MT series and provide even greater braking force and stability when used in combination with the SPORT brake pads and the MDR-C or MDR-P rotors. Optimized for the special requirements of e-bikes.

MAGURA offers two models, one with 2 pistons (MT4 eSTOP) and the other with powerful 4-piston brake calipers (MT5 eSTOP).
MAGURA also offers eSTOP Optimized kits to upgrade MAGURA MT models for use on e-bikes. The kits consist of SPORT brake pads and MDR-P or MDR-C rotors.

MDR-C & MDR-P rotor

Optimized for use on e-bikes, these two new brake discs provide enhanced performance and stability – and they also reduce vibration.

The new MDR-C rotor is the all-rounder in the MAGURA E-bike Optimized portfolio – for city, trail and e-bike. An additional rigid element above the 6-hole mounting reduces vibration during braking, resulting in less noise. Heat resistance and stability have also been enhanced.

The MDR-P is a rotor for performance-oriented riders and tough tasks ranging from downhill to e-bikes and heavy cargo bikes. Compared to the MDR-C, the two-piece rotor saves weight and for the first time, it is also available with a 220 mm diameter. A special feature of the two-piece disc is the patented interlocking of the outer and inner rings (Dovetail Interlink technology). The interlocking provides additional support for the inner ring if the outer ring expands due to heat. In contrast to floating discs, the torque is transmitted over the entire surface instead of just the rivets. The result is increased rigidity of the brake disc and heat dissipation that is much more effective under continuous load. Thanks to this new technology, the MDR-P is the most powerful rotor in the MAGURA portfolio, yet it still offers riders low weight and reduced vibration. Perfect for MTB Gravity use.

MAGURA offers a rotor with a diameter of 220 mm for the first time – the MDR-P. This rotor generates around 10% more braking force than a 203 mm model and 20% more than a 180 mm model – for the same manual force. The higher mass also reduces the risk of brake fading and reduces brake pad wear by 15%. The temperatures that are critical for the brake pad are reached much later by the MDR-P rotor.

Sport Brake Pad

The new organic SPORT brake pads are suitable for everyday and sports biking – and especially for use on e-bikes. They are positioned between the MAGURA COMFORT and PERFORMANCE pads in terms of braking performance and durability. The new brake pad mixture is optimally adapted to the requirements of e-bikes and the eSTOP brake models. Thanks to their shorter braking-in time, the new SPORT pads are also ready for use very quickly.

eMTB professional Stefan Schlie talks about the new MAGURA MT5 eSTOP

Stefan Schlie, the runner-up in the World Trial Championship, stretches the riding technology envelope with the eMTB and appreciates the features of the new eSTOP. “The demands of an E-MTB brake are complex. For Downhill, you need enough power and stability, but also a fine degree of modulation. For eMTB, the efficient modulation of a brake also comes into its own uphill. In this high torque range, even the best motor is difficult to modulate. Gentle braking helps to minimize traction losses and master even steep stretches.”
The new MT5 eSTOP is ideally suited for this “brake-traction control” and other eMTB driving techniques, thanks to its combination of precise modulation and high braking force.

 Has anyone out there spotted a thickness spec of the rotors? I'd love to fit a set of these to my current rig.

 2mm, everyone else runs 1.8mm. you can maybe fit it in but pad clearance will be minimal
