2016 sees a fresh take on the UK based Marin/ Stans race team. The fresh faces of Rob Williams and Nikki Whiles join Leigh Johnson, Chris Keeble-Smith and Martha Gill to race the British Enduro Series and the EWS series.
The new team headed out to stay with Blacktown trails in Madrid, Spain for a shakedown on the bikes, some team bonding and to attend the Enduro Fun Festival organised by Santa Cruz rider, Iago Garay.
After a day of filming and riding in some much-needed sun and dry trails, a freak snowstorm hit and the trails became white with a typically un-Spanish feel. The team knew that the slightly British weather would hopefully play into their hands come race day, and they weren't wrong.
Rob Williams raced his 29” Marin Rift Zone to take the overall win and teammate, Chris Keeble-Smith took 2nd place overall, just one second behind on his Attack Trail Pro. Martha Gill took the overall women’s win by almost a full minute and the U23 women’s win.
Fellow team rider, Leigh Johnson suffered a broken chain mid-race but fought his way back up the pack to score 2nd place in U23 and 5th overall.
The team left the UK expecting a tough race but to compete on typically dry, dusty Spanish trails. Their first day on the hill was a shock to the system “I couldn’t believe it when we hit the trails and they were covered in snow. You expect Spain to be sunny but we were in for a much tougher race than we’d expected. It’s great practice for the Enduro World Series, though – you get four seasons in one day and you’ve just got to be able to keep racing,” said team rider Nikki Whiles, who scored his first podium of the year at the Welsh Enduro Series at Afan but had to settle for DNF in Madrid due to a broken rear mech.
With great results in the bag the team are looking forward to the first British Enduro Series event at Ae Forest and first Enduro World Series race in Chile. You can follow the team on Instagram with @Marinstansracing or
