Martin Maes Out of EWS Colombia With Shoulder Injury

Mar 30, 2018
by Pinkbike Staff

Bad news out of Colombia as Martin Maes took a rough slam on the infamous Stage 6 drop and injured his shoulder.

bigquotesAbsolutely gutted that I will have to pull out of the race this weekend. I suffered a left shoulder dislocation which luckily popped straight back in. X-Ray all clear, more tests when I return home on Wednesday! Thanks to the @gtfactoryracing racing crew for their amazing support.Martin Maes

Heal up soon Martin!

That drop is kinda jank for an enduro track... see this for evidence:

Funny to watch but not great if it took that many people down? Or maybe more course walking required?

i think it's rideable without issues in the dry but with this slippery conditions it get's kinda dangerous IMO

Jezzz...look at those wooden poles holding the tape...
  • 3 1
I may slide my butt down... this only time bike will ride me .... HEAL QUICK MARTIN !!
  • 19 22
What a completely crap piece of trail, it will be surprising if he’s the only one not to be injured on it! Looks like compulsory gas to flat!!
  • 16 7
 That shit deserves a chicken-line.
  • 4 1
Especially considering they only get one blind practice run.
  • 24 20
That piece of track has no business in a world-class race, or any race for that matter. Fingers crossed MM makes a full and speedy recovery.

@thebrucetrail: have you seen Anneke's latest IG storie crossing a river on a ver sketchy "bridge"? Not sure about that also.

 Sometimes slower is faster

@Zany2410: right ! slow is smooth, smooth is fast !
  • 1 0
@Zany2410: or saver in that regard
  • 17 2
why not?? It’s a test of best of the best, just a bit wet making it sketchy as hell!

@Hockerz: You mean a "I like my bike and face intact thank you" line
  • 1 0
 @rip29: Remy G I think
  • 2 0
@t-stoff: that is sketchy but you can cross the river without using that, did the bridge and the river crossing yesterday.. you might get you feet wet though..
  • 2 0
This is the only stage which wasn't allowed to be walked, because it's on a private property.
  • 2 0
 @Lagr1980: ahh okeyyy!
I'm sure the alternative is not even half cool for an IG story lol I guess! Thanks for the reply;D
  • 11 2
Remember what happened to Remi Thirion at Leogang? Rider's protested and had that jump fixed ... Maybe that should happen here... No matter how good you are, a sketchy trail is still sketchy, and you don't get much better than Maes... When the riders push themselves hard someone's bound to get hurt
  • 18 0
@thebrucetrail: man, this chute was completely rideable, but the riding and rain destroyed... they were fixing yesterday.. it a bummer someone got hurt, but... its not that smart to drop it to flat when they know the track is so muddy after all day on rain... we (not the elite guys) trained in the morning and it was ok.
  • 2 0
@Lagr1980: Gutted that Maes is the victim and they fix it now... He has a big problem now in the rankings to get back to the top again!
  • 4 1
@striveCF15: It's definitely rideable, but I don't there should be a race on this bit. Vojtech Blaha, Czech U21 rider, rode it and dropped it without any problems, but injured his ankle on the landing so that he cannot even walk now.

@TheJD: like i said, shouldn't be a problem when it's dry/dryish, but when it's slippery and your're comin in fast in this section there is now chance of slowing down enough to not drop it... but that's just from my perspective on the screen Wink
  • 1 0
@TheJD: So there was a (ankle) problem.. Wink
  • 5 3
Regardless of any injuries, race tracks should be hard. There's too many tame race tracks where people know like the back of their hands and when it comes to racing their sorted. Nothing wrong with a challenge?? It's just finding the line between too fast and too slow however well you know the track. But why make a track easier just because people are crashing? That'd be lame
  • 4 0
@aushred: Agree. A sketchy section these days is classed as dangerous for some reason.
  • 11 2
New groundbraking exercise for MTBers. You lay on the bench, put your arms up as if you were to prepare for bench press, while your coach drops olympic bar with 100kgs of weight on you
  • 8 0
@thewho07: I think it's sketchy if skill plays no role in the outcome, or very little. If it's just difficult and requires a lot of skill to ride fast that's one thing. If it's a cheap shoot with the best guys in the world it's sketchy
  • 4 1
@arthurlaurie: Tame tracks in EWS? It is not the UCI you are watching huh Wink
  • 1 0
@thewho07: Whaha.. you are talking like this over the best Enduro racers and tracks in the world? Oh my... you clearly don't know where you talk about...

Supposed to be the best riders in the world don’t think they should need any girlfriend lines.
  • 1 0
WOW! thanks for that post. I was originally going to say weak for Maes but CLEARLY not the case. Super Jank!
  • 34 6
Am I reading whining comments about the trail being too natural and slippery? Isn't mountain biking about riding natural trails, whatever the weather as it is an outdoor sport? Riders should adapt to the trail and not the other way round... But don't get me wrong: I'm pissed for Martin. This happened to me before and it sucks. Really.
  • 17 5
The natural and slippery is not a problem, adding a 2m huck to flat is. That thing is dangerous even in the dry - it might be safe rolling slowly but not as much when you jump it.
  • 6 0
 @chuxxo: don't jump it then?

It's like saying a corner of a racetrack is dangerous at 100mph but fine at 60, don't do
100 then? Racing is about going faster than the next competitor, everybody gets the same track so everybody has the same issues, slow down a bit if that's what's required.

There goes his shoulder and my prediction...
  • 1 0
and mine! both shoulder and prediction lol!

Good to hear no break, did mine back in January and required a chunk of the glenoyd bolting back together and cartilage repairing. 2 months since surgery and still only limited movement, heal quick!

Sounds like you are faster than Martin!
  • 19 0
@adrennan: Or landed differently? Or perhaps the avalanche I got caught up in was quicker, I'll let you and your keyboard decide
  • 3 0
I hear ya, it can be a horrible injury. I had a bony Bankhart repair in September. Still a little stiff and sore occasionally, but I’m getting back to really technical stuff now and it feels stable. Keep up with therapy and heal quickly!
  • 2 0
Had this in Feb and now 4 weeks since surgery.. still a bit before I can ride!
Get well soon @all!

My 4 year old is re-enacting this on his scooter right now. Same incline, same flat landing. He wiped out too but his weight was much further back so his derriere took the hit. I'm going to blame modern geometries and overly big wheels for Martin's slam. And not having the survival instincts of a small child.
  • 7 3
In 3 months you'll find him wandering the woods of Northern Vancouver seeking for the hide out of the wise Yode Simmons. Huck to flat learn he must... the prophecy shall be fulfilled: Huck to flat is the new Enduro
  • 4 0
@WAKIdesigns: f*ck man, he and his sister took a couple of horrible slams today. Nobody cried. I was so proud. I think they're ready for Tignes.

Where is the race coverage Pinkbike? No practice coverage? Terrible internet in Colombia?
Martin will heal up fast! Speedy recovery!

Shoulders are 100% the stupidest joint.
  • 17 0
 @brianpark:

or the smartes, its the only joint which has 360° movment Wink
  • 2 0
@screamingeagle3: and it used to say it's actually 5 joints !
  • 5 1
@brianpark: It’s not really one joint, but technically at least three joints making up each shoulder; your clavicles are not fixed at either end, your humerus is rotating inside a socketin your scapula, and your scapula is gliding over your thorax, all stabilized by a bunch of muscles, cartilage, bursae, og fibrous cartilages giving you enormous mobility and agility
  • 2 0
 It’s a recipe for disaster
  • 17 0
@johannensc: Lets redesign the shoulder with boost spacing.
  • 7 0
@screamingeagle3: any joint can rotate 360° if you try hard enough
  • 5 2
I thought that knees are the dumbest joints...
  • 7 1
All those people that picked him in the top three for that enve wheelset contest must be so disappointed right now

You beat me to it. A lot of predictions just got screwed. Razz Frown But that's secondary... Best wishes to Martin!

I've just had a Laterjet procedure last year (had three concurrent dislocations in under a month). Took me a good nine months off the bike.. still gives me the shits when it gets rowdy. So far so good though.. It's all in my head. This shoulders good. The other one needs another dose of knife though..

Yes -- called a "subluxation", when it pops out and right back in. It can lead to chronic shoulder problems... Let's hope not for MM.

His seatpost seems to be fully extended, on such chute this may have caused him to crash.
  • 1 0
That was fucking gnarly. Glad it was just a dislocation.
  • 1 0
I'd be worried about chest or anterior neck blunt trauma from that sucker.
