Video: Martin Soderstrom's Ride to Recovery Part One

Jan 14, 2015
by Red Bull Bike

Martin Söderström is a rider who has always oozed class. From the way he can make the most basic of tricks look so stylish, to a resume of contest wins from all over the world, there's no doubting his ability.

But just when a victory on the biggest stage of them all, Crankworx' Red Bull Joyride, seemed his for the taking, he suffered a brutal leg break that would see him staring retirement and a life away from riding right in the face.

Thankfully, it wasn't to be, however. Söderström called on the same determination he'd used to reach the top of the sport to climb back on to his bike again. We'll be chronicling in detail the bone-crushing lows and free-wheeling highs of his return to riding in a two-part feature. This week, we follow Söderström as he takes his first steps to getting back on the bike again following a long period of rehabilitation.

Stay tuned to see more on his road to recovery in part two next week.

Man, watching his leg flop around during that crash is sickening. Very glad to see him back at at.

Even after I've seen some horrible crashes/accidents/gore, that truly made me cringe. Brutal Footage.

@ 1:26-1:35 had to be the reason for the "WARNING – The video contains material which some may find disturbing". that footage definitely was disturbing. Martin, much props to you for throwing a healing leg over your bike once again, inspirational. the human body is an amazing piece of machinery. still can't get over how horrific that crash looked. much props'

IMO Soderstrom and Bryceland are hands down the best personalities in the current mountain bike scene. You can see the humility, passion and pure joy in their riding styles and they both seem to portray a competitive side without being consumed by it.

Any of the feat series guys? Lacondeguy?
There's heaps of mtb athletes who aren't consumed by it, so many of them just don't show that side don competition day which is what is viewers see the most of.

Stoked to see him back. Steeziest dude alive

He is a really nice guy. He is my seven years old son's number one idol. When we met him in the bike park last summer he took the time to have a chat, signed his helmet and posed for pictures even though he needed to focus on takeing run after run to to get the photo that ended up on the cover of Dirt magazine.

Still has the best style in all of MTB slope

Literally every trick Martin does makes me smile. No-one else has anywhere near the same insane style as Martin

"Many athletes don't come back from that injury" 'cuz many athletes ain't FMBers. It would be one of this sport's greatest losses if Soder could no longer ride. Chuck Norris wishes he was Martin Soderstrom.

What's with the Bieber poster? O.o

Great to see Red Bull look after their athletes so well in recovery. It looks like it is paying off already for Söderström.

Anyone else thinking they'd like to see more of Martin ripping trails? We all knew his unbeatable slopestyle steez, but he kills the trails here big time!

I had this same exact injury happen to me playing football, and it sucked really bad. The rehab was very tough but worth it, best of luck to Martin, It would suck not to be able to see him ride anymore.

Holy fach I forgot how INSANLY much style this dude has!! It's not just what he does, but the way he does it! Super stoked to see him back!
With an attitude like that he will be back on the podiums for sure. Maybe not his first contest, but very soon for sure, probably faster than anyone would expect.

Hope that next to riding he'll have some time to drop some videos aswell in the meanwhile. For me the highlights of Martin Söderström were not even his podium places at the contests, but the times he was the guy blowing up the internet, and thereby the whole scene and industry, when he released a new edit.

Go Martin!!!!!

Pinkbike Poll: What was more difficult to watch? Martin's leg flop around after his crash or this P.O.S Redull player! Get better and ready to kill it, once again.

Having just had 7 months off the bike with a broken Radius and Collarbone I can definitely relate to some of this, plus Total Fitness Wilmslow is a gym I know well Smile All the best Martin good to see you back on the bike

I remember him already being back and injuring again at a dirt contest last year. Can someone verify this...? 4 Martin don´t care everybody knows u one of the best. It was the winning run if had finished. Maybe race some enduro this year and have fun after all ;-)

Mandatory drink of red bull during the work out... Fair play to them though with his rehabilitation.

now trek is gonna have some competition!
  • 2 0
But seven months is a long time I don't now if he will catch up . I hope he dose I would like to see another rider that has chance against Seminuk and Rheeder at joyride this year
  • 2 0
Fair play to Red Bull! All the negativity surrounding them and the things that went on at Rampage it's nice to see a big sponsor sticking their necks out and supporting riders! Can't wait to see him shredding again!

Good to see part of Martin's story.

I think he feels good as hell.

Some athletes venture less and lose less. I know how is to risk more and lose more. for me he is one of the bravest. Soderstrom force.
  • 3 0
Love the SodaStream. Seems like a good dude, aside from being able to stomp shit like a boss.
  • 3 0
Martin you're a legend. MTB would not be the same without you. So stoked you're back riding- you've been missed.

  • 4 1
Much respect, but he drinks Red Bull at gym, seriously ?
  • 4 1
Read more about product placement in videos. Wink I highly doubt he drinks it during normal training.
  • 4 1
While there is no way around advertising in one way or the other, a RB can in the gym is just noncredible.
