Mathieu Van Der Poel Makes History at the Second Stage of the Tour De France

Mathieu Van Der Poel s return to World Cups will be a challenge after two years away.

After the carnage of stage one at the Tour De France, Mathieu Van Der Poel has taken an emotional first victory on day two of the 2021 Tour. With his win today Mathieu will now start the third day as the holder of the yellow jersey and leads the overall standings.

We believe this makes him the first rider to win a mountain bike World Cup and a Tour de France stage since Cadel Evans, a truly awesome achievement. He also becomes the first rider to win a Mountain bike World Cup and Tour de France stage in the same year following his Short Track victory in Nove Mesto.

Mathieu Van Der Poel played a strategic race and after the last breakaway rider was brought back into the peloton he launched an attack on the first ascent of the final climb. Other riders followed with attacks as they headed up the final climb, but Mathieu attacked again inside the last kilometre and no one could match his pace. Mathieu crossed the line six seconds up and secured his first Tour De France stage victory just 18 months after the passing of his grandfather, Raymond Poulidor, a past seven-time Tour De France stage winner.

 Poor show Pinkbike. Personally I don't mind spoilers about MTB results because only a moron would be on here before they'd watched the race. But you just don't expect to see TdF results on here - and there are probably a lot more of us into road racing than you think.

 We blew it spoiling this for the TdF fans, I had to remind the team that "don't spoil event results" also includes road bike results. Won't happen again!

We try to be really good about not spoiling MTB events with replays for the day of the event, but we feel the day after is fair game on a bike news site.

When you see headlines like "X wins the Swiss National Championships" or whatever, it's because there's no broadcast or replay to spoil so we just post the news.

 @brianpark: I used to read race reports and results in Dirt Magazine back when it arrived every other month. They went out of print a few years ago but just in case there is still another magazine that takes this same approach, ideally don't write the race results in the headline until two months after the race. Thank you, much appreciated.

 @bogey honestly, we're going to avoid blatant spoilers but yes, huge road race fans should avoid internet until after they've watched the replay.

Literally every non-MTB cycling site I checked just now has the results on the homepage. Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc. too. The real reason they all do that is to win the race to the bottom chasing Google search results. We're not in it for that, so we can afford to be vague in the headline. But we're not going to avoid reporting on a HUGE result in cycling's biggest race from a professional mountain biker.

I was just as delighted as any other mountain biker to witness hundreds anorexic methheads horrifically injured in yesterday’s pile up but nobody needs to see this.  @brianpark: “MVDP Makes History…” isn’t a blatant spoiler? BITD when TdF coverage was a 30 min recap on ESPN8–the ocho— I used to know where to cover the CRT monitor with my hand on the espn.com homeoage to check the TVs schedule (seemingly random every day) so as not to spoil the results. Now, the youtoobz algorithm is smart enough (or I’ve trained it well enough???) to give me the non-spoiling NBC sports recap at the top of my feed. But I agree with other posters we should not be fearful of spoilers on Pinkbike, regardless of where else it may be in the internet. Suggested alternate headline “exciting results for TdF stage 2” (Intended as constructive criticism though I recognize it may come across as rant-y.)

 You can't expect a bike related site to not post bike related news just because your personal schedule doesn't allow you to watch the event within a reasonable amount of time. I think Pinkbike does a pretty good job of not posting results so you can have time to watch it. Most other news sites would post results immediately. If it matters that much to you, why not just watch the event live. Otherwise stop your moaning.

 @conoat: the irony of these sad commenters, is that the article is about a Roadie that is capable of stepping off road biking for a weekend and podium on MTB World Cups (first place most of the times) like it was just training for him. Same case for the kid riding for INEOS.

While it will never happen the other way around, no mountain biker will ever get a top spot on Le Tour.

I’m sandwiched between the lakes National park and the dales national park and all the roads are famous tour of Britain roads so it’s impossible to go anywhere without being stuck behind them and they always send you hate mail when you beat them on downhill road sections on your mountain bike on Strava. Subhuman scum, I’m off to watch crash compilations which unsurprisingly have huge view counts. Wink

People just don’t get it. Too many packs of feral road bike scum holding everyone up all the time around here. If you lived here too you’d understand . Taking up the whole lane and driving at 1/4 of the speed limit. Crying about you passing them “only 97cm away when the law REQUIRES 1m50... we’re entitled to take up the whole lane for mile after mile while having a good chinwag and paying no attention to the line of 28 cars that’s behind us. We’re entitled to be here. We’re valid road users. They will just have to wait.” Absolute c*nts. I hate them with a passion and my nine year old son does too. I even allow him to say the words “c*nt” and “twat” when we’re in the car stuck behind the roadie wankers. If they would just ride in single file up hills it would be a big improvement. Farmers in tractors have the good sense to do that around here, because they understand that they’re holding everyone up driving at 17mph when the limit is 60. If only cyclists weren’t so selfish they might also do that when the opportunity presents itself. c*nts.

Its Vehicle Excise Duty. Noone in the public directly pays for the roads. It's done through taxation and distribution via local government.

Roadies really are terrible people. At pro level they’re all doing performances enhancing drugs and having roadside blood transfusions while at novice level they’re blocking ambulances and causing random traffic jams in really unsafe locations. It really is the sport of the me, me, me’s.

He goes out with the roadie wankers from his visage every week and he says he won’t ride on the outside because he doesn’t agree with two abreast riding - it pisses him off too much when he’s driving when people ride like that especially when it’s a bunch of eight or more. He also told me there is this one guy called Trev who is just always looking for an argument with motorists. One time he stopped in front of a woman driving a Discovery because she passed him too close. I mean come on, we all know women lack depth perception so it was hardly a surprise. Total c*nt that Trev guy and there are more like him. It’s on road.cc every day. It’s like the Guardian for roadies. “Poor little me, watch how this selfish motorist drove past me only 87cm away from me, and he was going 62 in a 60 the ignorant c*nt. I had to put him straight, try to get a ride out of him and then point to my helmet cam so he wouldn’t give me the hiding I deserved.”

 @brianpark: Obviously the main focus for Pinkbike is mountainbiking and this particular TdF stage win was mainly mentioned because the rider mentioned in the article competes in mtb racing too. That said, if you want to expand horizons one discipline I like is BMX racing. They used to cover it in Dirt magazine until fifteen years ago or so but I feel that the link between BMX racing and MTB racing is much closer than that between MTB racing and road racing. Not saying you need to do it for me. I've already got fatbmx.com to read about this stuff. But if you're looking to expand horizons, this may be an interesting direction.

 @vinay: Wholehearted support the inclusion of BMX racing. BMX racing is beyond mental. They’re doing 40mph on kids bikes over massive jumps with seven other riders chilling in their back pocket. Real talent unlike road biking which basically comes down to who’s the best at pedalling and who can take the most performance enhancing drugs without having a heart attack.

 @thenotoriousmic: Yeah, but that wasn't necessarily the reason for my suggestion. I just feel that there is more interesting stuff that crosses over between BMX and MTB (pumping, cornering, jumping etc) than between MTB and road (pedaling). As for calling them "kids bikes", look again. Modern race BMX have a proper long wheelbase!

Either way, I do agree that BMX racing isn't receiving the respect it deserves. I live in The Netherlands. They're sending three male and three female BMX racers to the Olympics (if the Olympics go on) but for 2020, they were actually allowed to send eight racers. Because there are only six medals to win in Olympic BMX racing, the governing body was considering to only send six actual BMX racers and send two more track cyclists who'd only roll down the start hill, then pull over (so obviously not make to the next round) to then go on to compete in track racing. The idea being that athletes are allowed to compete in one more discipline other than the one they qualified for, the they flipped that and abused the BMX racers. One more reason I hate the Olympics with a passion. It is not the celebration of sports it claims to be. It is just a crapload of nationalism and money making over the backs of athletes, natives (having their homes bulldozed for the construction of the site) and women (with former Eastern European athletes still not being acknowledged and compensated for the physical and mental abuse they were subject to when they were supposed to "do their country proud").

Oops, sorry for the rant. Having BMX as part of a high profile sports event is cool and all, but it is upsetting to see how medals for a country are somehow more important than having the absolute best athletes throwing down the best performances.

TL;DR: Sorry again. BMX racing is cool.

 Super human effort. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Definitely one for the history books, as it’s the first time a father and his son have held the yellow jersey. One of, if not the greatest rider of this generation. Bravo Mathieu.

 His dad won two TdF stages, but never led the race/wore the yellow jersey. His grandpa (Raymond Poulidor) finished 2nd twice in the TdF and won many stages, but also never wore the yellow. Amazing family all around, no matter what!

 @nsteele: Adrie van der Poel held yellow for one day after stage 4 of the 1984 tour, but did not receive it during the ceremony because the organizers made a mistake. He was given the jersey afterwards at the hotel he was staying at.

 I thought it was nowhere near as impressive as Alaphilippe yesterday. Holding off that group for over 2km was ridiculous.

 @jclnv: Alaphillippe was impressive but van der poel attacked twice and no one had an answer for either of his attacks. He led a massive attack 17k out of the finish up a hill to get the 8 second time bonus and then he attacked again for the final climb and no one was close to him for either. He took king of the mountain and the yellow jersey today with those last two climbs. Honestly van der poels last 20k was the most I’ve ever enjoyed watching road riding.

 @Daledenton: It was a great ride for sure but going from over 2k to go and having Latour chase as hard as he could and not get any closer was crazy. Similar to what he did at Worlds when you had Wout etc chasing and they didn’t get any closer.

MvdP is mega but he’s pretty limited on climb length and steepness, Horses for courses I guess but I think that’s why he’ll struggle to beat Pidcock in XCO.

 @brianpark just wanted to say you are doing a good job at dealing with this one. It’s amazing how harsh people can be on the internet. If you are really that upset by this, remember you are fortunate enough to even have the ability to use the internet (aka its a first world problem so check yourself before you wreck yourself). Feedback is completely fair game but some people are totally out of whack.

 Also forgot to mention something relevant to the article which is: wow MVdP is a force to be reckoned with. The official TdF 9ish min stage highlight does a great job of showing the effort/emotion that went into the stage victory and the story/dedication to his recently passed away grandfather who was a very accomplished TdFer.

 We blew it spoiling this for the TdF fans, I had to remind the team that "don't spoil event results" also includes road bike results. Won't happen again!

We try to be really good about not spoiling MTB events with replays for the day of the event, but we feel the day after is fair game on a bike news site.

When you see headlines like "X wins the Swiss National Championships" or whatever, it's because there's no broadcast or replay to spoil so we just post the news.

 What a contrary lot you PB commenters are. When I complained that PB posted a spoiler hours after Vali's crash on her race run I was voted into oblivion. And that was actual MTB news. Now everyone is upset about a TdF spoiler.

 I gotta say, this really shows you how competitive pro XC MTB has gotten! For a while, road racers had the mindset that the pinnacle of shear fitness was on the road-side. But seeing MVP both win and lose with similar frequency atelite-level competition across both disciplines in my mind shows that XC MTB takes insane fitness to win that is comparable to road racing fitness!

 Those crossover athletes are quite amazing, but it's far from "any type of bike". The covered disciplines are fairly dominated by plain old leg power, with bike handling alone being, yes, very necessary, but rarely the deciding factor.

 @extratalldirtrider: 100% he'd be fast, but I'm not 100% he'd, say, qualify for a World Cup without a real good chunk of specific workouts and practice; as opposed to how he can just jump from XC to cross to road and back seemingly without any trouble. Also not saying DH or enduro athletes aren't fit, but it's completely different animal going fast there vs the other styles.
