PRESS RELEASE: Maxxis

Always at the forefront of innovation in MTB tire technology, Maxxis is making the latest and best-ever version of its race-winning compound, MaxxSpeed, available to the public.

Developed in cooperation with Nino Schurter, the winner of more World Championship and World Cup titles than any rider in XC history, the new MaxxSpeed uses a silica filler to improve both speed and wet traction. Testing shows that MaxxSpeed reduces rolling resistance by more than 25%, providing an edge which can shave as much as a minute off a rider’s time in a 90-minute race.

This dramatic improvement in performance hasn’t been confined to the lab. MaxxSpeed has delivered real-world results for Schurter and other SCOTT-SRAM riders for the past several seasons, aiding multiple World Cup and World Championship wins. Schurter appreciates the advantage MaxxSpeed provides: “XCO racing is more competitive than ever. The new MaxxSpeed compound rolls faster and grips better than before, giving me an edge over my rivals.”

To cover the variety of conditions and terrains XC riders encounter, Maxxis is offering the new compound in a full range of XC tread patterns, including Aspen, Rekon Race, Ikon and Severe. At launch, 29” sizes are available with 27.5” sizes to follow. All specs use Maxxis’ proven 120 TPI, tubeless-ready XC race casing with EXO sidewall protection.

Alongside the fresh MaxxSpeed compound is a new tread pattern called the Severe, Maxxis’ new XC mud tire. The go-to for rainy races, the narrow, low-volume-casing Severe features a spiky tread pattern and has already powered through thick mud on the world stage for the likes of Schurter, Bec McConnell and Anne Terpstra.

Like MaxxSpeed, this race-winning Maxxis product is newly available to the public. “With the new Severe, Maxxis has your back on race day, no matter what the conditions are,” said Olympian and World Champion Kate Courtney.

 Wrong kind of rubber mate.

Does this mean they will wobble faster too?

"Testing shows that MaxxSpeed reduces rolling resistance by more than 25%, providing an edge which can shave as much as a minute off a rider’s time in a 90-minute race."

LOL the engineering team should never talk to the marketing team
  • 39 1
Rolling resistance is not 1-to-1 correlated with overall times... It's mostly the course and endurance. 25% is a significant improvement nonetheless
  • 9 1
Maybe you should talk to the engineering team?

Make me a dissector with maxxspeed center and dual compound cornering knobs.... I'll pay $100
  • 16 0
^This, in EXO+ and DD. For those of us riding hard, abrasive, rocky soils (most of US Southwest), 3C tires last less than a month in the summertime. The side knobs on my rear 3C Dissector were undercut & folding in 2 just weeks. Maxxis needs to make Dual compound rear tires across their casing range, not just in EXO: the same rocks that shred their soft compounds make mincemeat of thinner casings as well. Maxxspeed in the center on a Dissector might actually have it living up to to its hype as a fast-rolling tire. In my experience, it's not perceptibly faster than just mounting a DHF on the rear.

@powturn: You ever tried a Minion SS? It's my go-to for desert riding, and dry PNW summers
  • 6 0
@HSLD: Minion SS would be amazing if they decided to offer a 2.5 or even 2.4 size.
  • 7 0
@powturn: Here in the souths east of France (rocky, dry) my Dissector maxxterra last only for less than 800 kms. I switched for a Continental Kynothal Enduro. Same thread pattern, same type of grip, the same resistance than a DD casing, only 42€ online at bike24 and after 600 Kms on it, I can barely see some worn out mark on the tire. I think it will last at list 2 to 3 times longer than the Maxxis. It's a no brainer for me now, I switched from Maxxis to Continental.

@HSLD: love that tyre! It’s the marmite of tyres though which people either love or hate. I have one for summer trail riding as it’s super fast rolling yet hooks corners well just don’t try and brake in a straight line with loose ground hahaha. I’m with you though it’s a great tyre.

I guess MinnGrip didn't make it out of the brainstorming session
  • 4 0
That should have been the compound when they did the Assegai with Greg Minnaar
  • 13 0
Maxxdollar max speed or max grip pick one
  • 10 2
I'm waiting for the MaxxWobble compond. Maxxis have been secretly field-testing it for quite some time now. Time to make it official!
  • 8 0
Use it in heavy casing rear specific tires! I want fast rolling tires that don't pinch so easily!
  • 27 1
I just want a DHR2 with a DH casing and MaxxTerra.
  • 4 1
 @4thflowkage: and a wobbly casing
  • 8 0
@4thflowkage: Buy a Kryptotal. DH soft is decently fast.
  • 3 0
@4thflowkage: they have a bike park version of DH casing DHR2 now
  • 1 0
@stormracing: link? I read something about this a while back, but its not listed on the Canadian or USA Maxxis websites
  • 1 0
 @maestroman21: shop.maxxis.com/collections/mountain/products/minion-dhr-ii

The wire bead dh casing variant is the “bikepark” compound
  • 1 0
@brycepiwek: okay yeah, thats been around for a while. Not tubeless compatible. Probas not a big deal for most though.
  • 1 0
@maestroman21: These new wire bead DH casing tires are tubeless ready. It's in the specs, DH/TR.
  • 1 0
@spectralfire: but not max Terra or a harder park compound. That's what we are looking for.
  • 2 0
@maestroman21: the product name doesn’t have “3CM” (3 compound, M for maxxgrip) or “3CT” ( 3 compound, for maxx terra) in it. So it’s likely a dual compound which is harder than both terra and grip variants.
  • 3 0
looks like a they're just relaunching and slightly modified heavier tyre compound to keep the prices high, wonderful.

how is the new maxxspeed 2.35" tyre now the same weight as the 2.6" and the new 2.00" tyre (not sure who would want that anyway) the same weight as the old 2.20".

xc tyre weights are just getting silly now.
  • 4 0
Instead of ‘Maxxis needs to do… for what I want’, have the sheeple ever considered a trying a different tyre brand?
  • 3 0
Can’t count how many times I tried to have a tire conversation with other riders and they just say “IDK, I just always buy minions”.
  • 7 0
@sfarnum: thirty PSI in my Minions, I don't care about your opinions
  • 3 0
@barp: “Pick a tire pressure and be a duck about it.”
  • 1 0
@barp: Nice, I only ride park
  • 2 0
 @sfarnum: quack quack ?
  • 1 0
Oh nice, now they might finally be on par with Conti, Schwalbe, Vittoria and Specialized in terms of rolling speed. About time the general public gets access to the stuff the pros have been on over the last couple of years.
  • 2 0
So where can you actually buy any of these? They say at Maxxis dealers or on Maxxis website, yet there is nothing available there for purchase.
  • 1 0
Rolling resistance is the low point of Maxxis cross country rubber, so if they have a faster rolling version of Maxxspeed, i am down to try it and see if it outlasts Kenda. Vittoria so far is the longest lived tire i have used. Well over 3,000 miles on my Barzo, and there is still tread left. Kenda is the shortest lived, usually less than 1200 miles... but they stick like glue
  • 1 0
@R-trailking-S: give Pirelli Scorpion XC RC in 2.4 Pro Wall a go. Was a game changer for me coming off Kendra’s.
  • 1 0
We weighed them in shop and the max speed compound is actually 40g heavier per tire compared to the softer compound. This means it will probably be better for flatter races and worse in climby races.
  • 3 0
just looks like a crossking ish
  • 3 0
So in place of the old ForeKaster
  • 5 0
I miss the old lighter ForeKaster. Great shoulder-season tire front and rear in the North East
  • 2 0
@FatTonyNJ: I agree, I ran a Forekaster with a Ardent Race rear and it was great in the midwest, now just running recons front and rear.
  • 2 0
I thought the Team only maxxis xc tyres likes aspens used 180tpi, not 120tpi as stated?
  • 1 0
Close, 170tpi, so I guess these are still only reserved for sponsored riders.
  • 3 1
Maxxis reliability in anything less than DH is poor…nah it’s all poor. Screw em. I’ve switched.
  • 3 1
Wasn't expecting such a Severe change in Maxxis' lineup!
  • 7 7
I'm getting tired of all these puns. Hopefully this will blow over so we're not under so much pressure to come up with new ones.

  • 11 1
You might have to roll with it, I think the puns are here to stay, no matter how flat they are. Hopefully we'll see them tread on new ground, once the shift in popular opinion gains some traction.
  • 2 0
The Severe fills the gap left by the new Forekaster.
  • 7 0
Should have called this the new Forekaster and name the other tire something else.
  • 2 0
"minute off a rider’s time in a 90-minute race" that's quite the claim
  • 3 1
What about 26"? Dj bikes need grip too!
  • 2 0
No headset cable routing, so that should keep a lot of people happy.
  • 1 0
Did the Ardent Race get discontinued or just missed the cut for the new compound?
  • 2 2
Sounds like you'll be able to run circles around your riding buddies on these.
  • 1 0
Ha ha, working with Nino...and the rest of them
  • 1 0
Waiting for Maxx side knobs that don't start tearing off after 150 miles.
  • 2 0
 maxxpuncture
  • 1 0
 Probably still slower than raceking
  • 1 0
Is there a label to tell the old and new maxxspeed tires apart?
  • 1 1
Someone please help me out. Is a “Xc mud tire” like a trail tire?
  • 3 0
A fast rolling tire that can shed mud. Just cause a tire has more knobs doesnt mean its good for shedding mud.
  • 2 0
I think you’re Severe-ly overestimating the tread on that tire
