Montana Treasures // Whitefish with Pete Costain

Pete Costain has been referred to as the Godfather of Whitefish mountain biking more than a few times. As a long-time local and trail builder, he helped scratch in some of the original trails at Spencer mountain before taking his company Terraflow Trails full time in 2009, legitimizing his building and expanding throughout Montana.

Every mountain bike community has its individuals who are constantly striving to progress the sport. Be it trail building, advocacy, land management or retail, every avenue is an equally important part of creating a thriving movement. Montana Treasures is a series about a few of the many people who embody the state’s greater mountain bike scene through their actions and endeavors.

Previous Episodes of Montana Treasures:

Big Sky with Tom Owen
Helena with Lanie White
Missoula with Ben Horan

Chase out the radical religious right, racists, and fire season, and you’d swear Whitefish MT was paradise. Love that region.

I’ll probably remove my Darwin fish with legs sticker from my truck before I head that way.

Dude I spend a few months a year in that area and the religious folks are harmless. Never once outside of my god-fearing hole watch I've never once been drug into a religious discussion in the area. So yea outside Columbia Falls they literally have a Ten Commandments park but don't fuckin go there. People are nice and friendly. Plus that's probably the most gorgeous place I've been so far in the states. Just because someone has religious views doesn't mean they should be cast into a sect and ostracized for it. Just my two pennies. Unless you were trying to scare people from going there to keep it more to yourself.....if that's the case my bad.

What an asinine statement, I've been to Whitefish many times over the years and have never had anything less than a fantastic time. It must truly be exhausting for you poor little snowflakes always trying to find something to be butt hurt over so you can virtue signal what great progressives you are. How sad you people are!

@MStewart40: I'm glad to hear you are able to get out there and enjoy the area. Like you, I'm an average looking white dude in a truck/subaru/whatever with a mountain bike in the back and no one has given me a hard time either. That doesn't mean all are welcome. Feel free look up Richard Spencer. The area is a hot bed for Neo-Nazi, KKK and white supremacists. I can look past the massive crosses erected in fields, but the graphic anti-abortion signs lining the highway intended to guilt people into changing their views is a bit much. Denying that racism/hate exist because you aren't personally affected by it is not valid reasoning.
