Morzine needs no introduction, it is an absolute banger of a destination for riding downhill bikes, drinking beers and lapping up the high Alpine air and this looks set to continue well into the future. This old farming town nestled in the Northern French Alps is once again growing rapidly with more tourists visiting each year, new trails, new facilities and some huge events such as Crankworx coming to town.

Morzine has always been known for its savage downhill trails and the Pleney takes the crown. Some of the local tracks on that hill are - for want of a better word - crazy. Steep, steep gullies, roots more mangled than the Amazon and step downs that scare the bejesus out of you. The Pleney secret trails are not for the faint-hearted, yet this is exactly what brings those seasoned Morzine holiday makers back year on year, that and the 600km of trails spread across two countries connecting 12 resorts with 50 official downhill trails and enduro loops over 80km in length. One week is never enough.

Morzine is not just about downhill, more enduro loops have been popping up over recent years and they seem to have become very popular with the tourists - and for good reason. Alongside the Passportes enduro event, where 5000 riders descend on Morzine during the last weekend of June to ride the 80km loop, there are more trails tucked away that cater for the shorter travel bikes.

One of the enduro loops, the Tour de Plateau de Loex starts in Les Gets, is accessed via the Nauchettes lift and brings you back down into the Les Gets village. Marked (F) on the map, this is a 14km loop with an 800m vertical drop and some decent climbing. Singletrack, loam, roots, rivers and epic views of MT Blanc all play a part in this awesome trail that takes you away from the main bike park. There many other sections that shoot off the main trail, the most famous being Colorado, so get your Strava out if you fancy a bash at these.

If it’s enduro you are after, Morzine certainly caters for that type of riding - you just have to work a little for it. There are a few great guiding companies out there now, we can't recommend MCF highly enough, ask for Stevo.

Crankworx came into Les Gets for the first time in 2016 after the Les Deux Alps contract finished, Les Gets worked flat out on the Slopestyle course, pump track, dual slalom and the downhill track on Mt Chery and it was all looking awesome, with chat from the pits that the DH track was one of the best built in years. That was until the heavens opened and the rain started pouring in true Les Gets style. Here’s looking forward to the 2017 event and some dry weather, Crankworx Les Gets is on from the 14-18th June 2017.

Riding bikes is what brings people to Morzine and new developments like high-speed Pleney lift, multiple new tracks on Super Morzine and the Pleney, plus the new pump track in town, are all adding to the appeal of the resort. However bikes are not the only activity on offer these days, with more money being pumped into developing Morzine as a multi-activity destination. The snow seasons are looking more uncertain year on year and with the summer season providing essential income, we hope these developments continue. Just check out the new skate park in the centre of town.

The skate park was finished at the end of 2015 and has proved very popular, be it little rippers on their BMX's or the old school skateboard crew, there is always someone down there, drinking a stubby, doing some power slides - check it out. There is a new indoor Olympic size swimming pool and Spa area, so something for the ladies or fellas to enjoy and soak those bruised muscles in after a full day on the hill. The list goes on and includes white water rafting, paragliding and climbing to name a few.

Head over to the website www.mtbbeds.com for much more info on MTB holidays, activities and events in Morzine. The Morzine mountain bike area opens on the 9th June and full Portes du Soleil lift linked area opens from the 23rd June, closing around the first week in September. Get that holiday booked up, save those beer tokens and get out here.

Morzine is a great destination. Great riding, fantastic bars and amazing people. My only criticism would be that the lifts don't stay open as late as some other resorts in the Alps. Just means you have to shake the hangovers off earlier than you'd like to and go but those first lifts.

it's an on going battle, with the unpredictable winters here is hoping they will extend the summer season soon.

 sam, you're so damn right.
So far we've been staying in Chatel, Les Gets and Morzine. What makes this area so incredibly outstanding is that it's so widespread. But if you're staying in let's say Chatel and want to experience Les Gets or Champery and maybe grab some burgers at lunch you are basically just on transfer, and if you have some mechnicals you might not catch your transfer back (which is catastrophic in the case of Chatel because you'll be f*cking stuck or you'll have to push your bike up some 500 meters of altitude). So please, at least leave some crucial ones like "Chaux Fleurie" open a bit longer. Or the whole area which would of course be even more awesome.

Been going since late 90's, sometimes 2 trips a year with buddies week then with wife n kids. Booked again this year for July, might get again in august with family. I can just lap pleney all day long, 20 laps done by 3pm then hit the bar. Hit lifts early is my tip..

You ever tried anywhere else in the alps.... Your missing out if you only hit up Morz fella!

@willaasss: Not many places can entertain you for a whole week or event two like Morzine and the Portes du Soleil. Morzine is also a great base fro visiting Verbier, La Thuile, La Caroz, Crans Montata for the day. Best of both worlds.

I just like pleney, theres loads of trails from les gets to morgins to keep happy for 2 weeks. Hattock and jump lines on zore are also on my favourites list. You can go loads of places from it for day trips too but tbh I cant be arsed.
  • 2 0
@willaasss: yeah and for Switezerland : Verbier / St Luc / Crans Montana are awesome too !!

Nothing wrong with it to be fair I've been many a time, It's an easy package holiday to get all the lads sorted. When people ask me for advice on where to go it's morzine for the first trip, then bourg from then on! Les arcs, tignes, la thuile, pila, verbier on the way home... You just can't compare morz to any of those places. It's all about van life then tho...
  • 1 0
@willaasss: There's no beating a road trip. We're Porte de Soleil, Les Arc then onto Andorra this year. Me and the missus two bikes each and the van, we love it! Morzines great and that but we felt we were missing out.

wish I could get a camper and do a tour for summer round them all. when my numbers come in I will. I like to ride a trail maybe 5 or 6 times, learn it get faster each time then move onto next. hate just riding once then moving on unless its not worth it..
  • 2 0
@bat-fastard: We're just in a Citroen Berlingo, no fancy camper van, and it's a mixture of accommodation and camping. It's not ideal at my age but if I'd have waited for the lottery win it'd never have happened.

@dglobulator: more don't have the time to do it with work, whistler or queenstown is on list too but your into telephone numbers for them compared to £700 for fortnight in morzine.. atm its cheap, handy, good group of us going together. If your ever out first 2 weeks july you'll know the place is full of us Northern Irish/Irish as our holidays start early so its like a big trip from home..
  • 3 0
@bat-fastard: Everyone thinks those big trips are expensive but.... I've just booked Whistler, first time for me, flights are £479 + £20 bike each way. Transfers Canada side £100 van-whis and back. Apartment for two weeks is roughly £311... its not silly prices... And the excitment levels are through the roof haha
  • 2 0
@willaasss: apartment for 2 weeks £311, is that shared with others?, get the links on here sounds rad.
  • 1 0
@mtb-beds: it is shared with others, that was individual price sorry ;-) ha. Total of 11 of us going but only me +5 in my apartment. Its "Whistler superior properties" £1494.12 last time i checked, its going up and down slightly because of the exchange rate. But 6 staying the first week works out as £124.51 each, 4 staying the second week £186.77 pp. Two weeks works out as £311.28 for the two weeks. That was all booked through booking.com

Some of the lads have splashed the cash and are paying £350 for a week in aava hotel?? Think thats what its called anyway, own room double bed to themselves etc..

Unfortunately there's a few only able to do a week but with the time difference and time of the flights they'll still get a solid full 6 days riding in!

Just a case of counting down the days till it happens now haha, if you need anymore info fire away...

@willaasss: must be the demand for a bike hostel / lodge out there!
  • 1 0
@mtb-beds: As long as you can show people its relatively affordable £520 flights(with bike), £100 transfers, and well say my accom £311 for two weeks. Works out at £931 for two weeks in whistler compared to Bat-Fastards £700 morzine two week price!! Lifts cost a lot more mind...

Im sure you'll have no problem selling out ;-) and the bike seasons starts earlier and finishes later out there!! lol
  • 1 0
@willaasss: mine had insurance and lift passes plus travel from Northern Ireland.. once you add that lot on I'd be near £1500 for whistler
  • 2 0
@bat-fastard: fair enough! I bet that's still cheaper than what most would think a whistler trip would cost tho...
  • 2 0
@willaasss: I've always thought the two week Whistler experience would be a three grander, so I'm really suprised at those numbers. Especially the £20 each way for the bike.
  • 1 0
@dglobulator: same here! I even phoned the air line to double check! Ha.
Cheaper than taking it to France on easyJet...

The capital of MTB in Europe, big bike little bike even take your 29er if your that way inclined. This place is Rad and so is the MTBBeds crew. Can't wait to get back out there, keep an eye out for that croc

Was in Morzine last summer. Very nice place, and some great riding. What I can say though is that the "enduro" loops marked on the map are NOT enduro in the modern sense, but rather dull XC-marathon trails. I took my 29er to the park and down the hidden trails instead, lots more fun. Hiking trails were great too for some epic riding.
  • 2 0
There are plenty or proper Enduro tracks, you do have to find out about them.wink wink.
  • 1 0
@mtb-beds: Could you map them in trailforks?
  • 2 0
@beerandbikes: Ah good idea, will give it a go.

It's all about the peddle up to Avoriaz

@bat-fastard: To be fair its not a bad ride up to get another run in in the evening.
  • 2 1
@ArcticBeast: my bikes single speed now 34f 12r and 42lb weight so good luck with that..
  • 1 0
Been there 2 times now / Chatel /Morzine.. What about the ''hidden'' DH tracks?
Are there a lot, and are we missing out if we didn't hit them yet?
  • 2 0
There are so many! When you come out of the tunnel on the Pleney main line and after the first few corners as you hit the flat straight with two small jumps look to your right, there are 5 at least there..
  • 1 0
@mtb-beds: Thanks, we are going to check more in this area this year!
  • 2 0
Going to Morzine this summer! Anyone good some suggestions for trails to ride?
  • 1 0
Super Morzine, Pleney, and Chatel will keep you busy for a good week if it's your first time. Go up the Mossettes lift and down into Swiss on the National track and ride some in Les Crostes, its amazing.

Did you visit in 2015? it was slightly wet but still, put some spikes on and its amazing.
  • 1 0
@mtb-beds: is Tour de Plateau de Loex worth doing, from what I've read it's just a wide path?
  • 1 0
I feel I need to reply to my own comment. Now I know my way around a bit better, plus the awesome weather in 2018, I had a brilliant time!
