Catharine Pendrel's Olympic Orbea Alma

Canada's Catharine Pendrel has been a force to be reckoned with since she first appeared on the World Cup XC circuit in 2004. The Luna Chix rider overcame a crash and powered from behind to bag the bronze at the Brazil Olympics - an improbable feat, to put it mildly. Good reason to bring her lucky bike to Andorra.

 the valve stem is on the A of Schwalbe on both tires. The rim stickers are off

 @eric-t-rudd: Wrong bike, but a good spot nevertheless.

 @eric-t-rudd:

dt rims have 4 stickers, alternating sides every 90 degrees, hence only seeing 2 of the 4. so yes, the stickers are off, from left/right hand rims......unless the wheelbuilder screwed uo

 You guys went from zero - or sometimes Emily Batty - to the best XCO coverage and a big thanks for that! Please continue the same next year because these guys and girls really deserve all the attention.

 Not only that, it's some of the best XC coverage photography I've seen.

 Glad to see XC racers using dropper posts. Makes sense to me.

 What's XCR? Does it have a hidden motor inside?
  • 7 1
 Yes, of course it does, it's an electrically activated derailleur
  • 3 0
 Is Catharine Pendrel left-handed, then?
  • 135 0
 Nah, she's right handed. She has her bike setup that way so that she can slap slower riders on the ass as she laps them. I think we'll see a lot more of that now that she's forged the style for future fast chicks.

 She had a thumb injury at near the beginning of the season, and I think modified the placement of her controls at the time to best suit what function she had on one side relative to the other. Maybe she just got used to it and decided to ride it out that way until the end of the race season (or longer) rather than make another mid-year switch in setup?

 @therealtylerdurden: sure, it's said that womans are good at multi-tasking: shifting while slapping
  • 7 2
 Haven't you guys ever heard of her nickname?? The lapper slapper!
  • 2 0
 She broke her thumb a while back
  • 7 1
 @WayneParsons: Maybe she shouldn't slap so hard then. Big Grin
  • 1 1
 Nah just british

 @therealtylerdurden: I would love it if she slapped me on the ass when she lapped me.... damn I'd turn around and pedal the other way just to get another one sooner!

 I quite sure that the DT Swiss gold edition's for Jenny Risveds is for the Opympic gold and NOT for the U23 XCO champs'
  • 16 0
 The caption was supposed to include both as Olympians without mentioning "Olympics" twice. If you didn't get that, then there are probably others who will think the same. Worth a fix. Thanks for the note.

 @RichardCunningham:
The big fault is that Jenny won in Elite class, not U23. (Is there even a u23 class in the Olympics?)
  • 2 2
 The real question is how did she win without a negative angled stem? Lmao!!!
  • 2 1
 @mhoshal: "negative rise"
  • 1 4
 @jaame: You can call it positive drop for all I care lol I would never ride one and could care less what the pros call it!!!
  • 20 0
 @mhoshal: How much less could you care?
  • 2 3
 @mhoshal: couldn't care less ffs!!!! I could understand an ameritard getting easily confused, but not a Canuck.

 Just hoping Maja won't retire after the World's

 FYI, Catherine had at least 3 crashes in the Olympics race

 She's hardcore. Must be in their genes. Both Catharine and Geoff are extremely talented.

 Only two crashes. One at the start, one at the end. Lots of close calls but only two crashes.

 @WhatAboutBob: Oh sorry, I thought she was involved with a cameraman or something. Whatever, still an awesome comeback!
  • 5 0
 @WayneParsons: Two spills, first on the start loop that put her almost at the back of the field, and another on the final small jump where it looked like she didn't touch down, but ended up pretty much facing the wrong way on the track in the process of saving it. That late bobble was what broke her momentum through the final sections and allowed Batty to recover most of the 30 second deficit to almost catch her at the line. The other incident was a mechanical issue caused by the tangle of bikes in the start loop incident, which locked her Di2 into a single gear that she was forced to use for the whole opening climb. At the first tech zone the team mechanic had to reset it back to full function, at which point she was almost at the back of the entire field - again.

 @Ginsu2000:
Wow, you know what you are talking about. Almost like you were there working the pits....
  • 3 0
 @Ginsu2000: tech geeks question is: would that tech issiue happen had she been using regular shift cable...?
  • 1 0
 @Ginsu2000: Wow that's crazy! Didn't know about the mechanical.
