Tyler - amazing segment but seriously, is it worth it without a helmet?
it seems we have on the one hand an article in the last couple of weeks looking for help for someone who had one concussion to many and then another video of someone riding without a helmet..........
it just baffles me that it still strikes anyone as a good idea to ride - especially like this - without one...................
@therevfryslim: there is no logic or rationale. I refuse to believe any arguments other than ' it looks cool and the trend is not to wear one and I'm never going to crash anywHAMMMMMM' But hey, land of the free right. Read up on the attitudes of motorists to mandatory seat belts! There's your answer.
Helmet or not: YOU ARE NOT going to save your frontal brow from an impact unless you have a full face. Most of the guys that end up hurting themselves are invested in the sport and understand the risks.
What I know is: Tyler may be one of the best bike riders to ever grace two wheels, and if he goes in with out a helmet he has taken the risk into account and made his choice.
The rider should always have the ability to make the choice.
Dave Mirra committed suicide due to CTE...caused by a string of concussions over the course of his career. Studies have shown helmets reduce the chances of concussions by at least 18%. What's the reason again for not wearing helmets? I'm not much of a "think of the children!" guy..but BMX does have a younger audience. A lot of these kids don't have the judgement to understand how injuries can impact you later in life. Should we not be protecting ourselves while setting an example for younger riders?
Tyler is on a whole 'nother level of confidence when it comes to riding a bicycle. Such an extreme level that none of us could understand. Of course, there's always risk, but when you have the confidence that you can hit a 35 foot stair gap at 30mph while spinning the bars, catching them, and then landing into a high speed bunnyhop over another concrete wall, its safe to say that he knows what he's doing, and what he's risking.
I grew up riding bmx and didn't wear a helmet until I was about 20. Now I feel extremely anxious when I hop on any bike without a helmet. Flat ground 180's = helmet for me now. It came with age I guess.
My thoughts too, amazing riding but why take the risk...
It has to be recognized too that an individual doesn't fully comprehend the idea of consequence until they reach about 25, so I'm not too sure he would fully understand the risk.
On the redbull website he's shown wearing a helmet, it would be good to see more leadership from the sponsors and those in the industry that might be a little more mature.
@randol35: Here is what it boils down to. Even if you are the best rider in the world, there are factors while riding that are simply out of ones hands such as mechanical failure or pedestrian/traffic. If your handlebar/stem/fork/wheel/crank/pedal/frame decides its quitting time, guess what, you're most likely going down. Don't be fools, people.
Looked up Scotty cranmers video; I've been out of the loop for a long while, DONT F%#kng tell me not wearing helmet makes u look cool!!!!! If my kid ever pulls that crap, I'll be tearing into him!! Life is too valuable. Scotty at least used a half lid, and was a RIPPER and appeared to be a great guy and that still took him down hard. I had no idea about how he is and looks now, my heart sunk SO deep when I saw the video!!! And these guys railing without a helmet! You can pull it off 800x's, and u can feel as bad ass as u want-- but it's only one split second of something stupid that was unforeseen. I'm settled, I'm using my MET helmet on all of my trail/ enduro rides- I was half lidding it like everyone else, but why? So it won't look like overkill! Scottys video was a reality slap to my face.
@burnadette: Exactly the rider should have the choice. People are constantly doing "dumb" things in today's era. what about Wing Suits? what about RopeLess Climbing, what about driving your car without a helmet on? In all these activities one slip could be fatal or life changing. Why is it we get so upset about a BMXer not wearing a helmet? There are plenty of states in the USA that don't require helmets on Motorcycles!
One thing people don't realize is how many more BMXers wear helmets now than 10 years ago. Before Aiken crashed no one wore helmets, and now most people do wear them on park and dirt. But one or two people don't wear them riding street and we get so bent outta shape about it. Its getting much better people, we need to realize how many MORE people are wearing them now than 5 years ago. Its not going to happen overnight you guys. Yes, the sponsors need to do more to require helmets in video parts for the impressionable youth.
Blame it on the skateboarders, todays BMXers seem more influenced from them anyways. All the dudes ripping trials or blasting quarters understand. Its just the dudes dropping stairs to flat that need to wake up...duh!
@RedBurn: yeah, that was one uber epic dead sailor
Thx guys, I don't look for attention or whatever, just really I wish everyone who is healthy appreciate that fact how beautiful it is to be free to ride or do anything
I miss riding so much. My Tracer was stolen a month ago and while my Nomad that is replacing it should be here this week, I have hated not riding. I was getting out 3-4 times a week before, and now I eagerly await the new bike and the purchase of lights for night riding. So stoked to shred. These videos get me amped.
The thought that i could run into John cardiel on some trails in tahoe is pretty dope. More reason to be friendly to other riders..you never know who you may meet.
Impossible to watch the videos because they pause every two seconds! Every other site works fine but this new PB video player. What gives? What's more, not too long ago everything worked fine on PB. I'm going through withdraw so FIX IT!!! haha!
If any of you truly think a half cut helmet is sufficient protection for riding like this, google Scotty Cranmer. It's a choice to wear a helmet. It's not smart, but neither is riding without full body pads and a leatte, but I'm in sure none of you do that every ride.
