Te Tihi O Tawa - Self Film: Roots, flow, birds & native bush, it doesn't come any better on 'Te Tihi O Tawa' (The Peak of Tawa Mountain). The trail offers true beauty and amazing grip. An interesting experience to self-film and edit my own riding, along with composing a simple audio track worthy of matching the native birdsong.

Agree with the comments on the amazing skills of Lacey, and BMX riders in general today - I think most MTBers could learn a hell of a lot that is applicable to the trails by riding bmx for a while. the level of tech is amazing and these guys have huge balls.

having said that can someone explain to me what the story is with street bmx riders and their aversion to helmets? maybe its connected to the fact that its a street sport and it's not "cool" to be seen wearing a helmet. but these guys are hucking huge gaps and drops while spinning, tricking etc without any protection alot of the time - and all this in a mostly concrete environment...

 It's street cred
  • 3 0
I think street cred is a good foundation from which to start.

Another angle could be some dudes haven't suffered a nasty enough head thumping crashes to consider it. Lacey seems to appreciate the fact that riding at the level that he does comes at a price. Helmets may not (yet) weigh in.

Still, though, V. Young and V. Homan went through their share of head bump issues, where both wear a helmet all the time. But, both started in on that when got a little older.

Van's section in Criminal Mischief... Yeah no helmet required... Animal

So maybe it's age. (Dude below called out the helmetless as idiots... D Lacey ain't no idiot Brah.)

It boils my blood. I get it, its their lives to lose, but when kids watch guys ride without helmets they pick up on that. It's not my place to force you to wear a helmet, but when there are kids looking up to you, you are being an asshole by filming yourself not wearing a lid.

Growing up in skate culture, not wearing a helmet isn't related to any sense of "being cool" at all, so thats ridiculous and has absolutely nothing to do with it. Anyone who thinks that it's them "being cool" behind the reasoning clearly doesn't understand where that decision making comes from..

Not wearing a helmet is an extension of personal confidence that you wouldn't put yourself into a situation where you are THAT confident in your ability and judgement to gauge risk. And ofcourse there's the possibility when there's that one fateful day when maybe conditions aren't right, maybe you're not feeling your best, and boom - you smack your head. - BUT - Please stop thinking that just because they aren't wearing a helmet that its because there's some cool factor involved, because there's not. People that don't wear helmets don't care at all if you choose to wear one, it's your choice, so please stop caring if they do (or don't) because they genuinely don't care if you do or don't.

@jjwillTOmaui: Hey man I never said it was smart I just provided a simple and honest answer because that's the reasoning behind it.

Epicly Later'd is a great show. So glad to see Bam is climbing out of the darkness and on his path to turning it around. The Ali Boulala episode is heartbreaking. Positive vibes to anyone battling their demons, we all have them.

was just talking about bam to someone and they showed me a recent pic, no idea he was off the deep end. his segments on jackass were always my favorite

Massive respect for Dan Lacey. That guy is a hard motherf*cker

Never thought that guys like Lacey put so much philosophy into stuff they do. Always was a fan of his riding style, but never thought he can express himself that way. Those "Above Below" videos show another side of my teenage favourites, nothing I could envy being grown-up, but it has the beauty of its own.

Plus..... Holy Hannah. (Years ago watched mirra (RIP) toss what I thought was the fast tire/Garrett Byrnes slide ever (vert ramp, near 10ft carving slide, light-travel speed.))

Kris Fox, on an 8 transition, may hold the title. Dude's rides his bike...

No helmet for the same reason DH racers don't wear elbow pads..in their head they ain't going down. Ultimate confidence. That said, it does not set a good example to kids.

Thought the same, hope he stays healthy and happy until I can watch him in the WC! What a champ!

Whatever it is, he has "it"!!!

Jeeze, love the passion. These videos are another good reminder, "you'll be safe". People are so scared of everything, but honestly you can fall off a 1 story roof, and be perfectly fine. It would take an absolute nightmare to injure a healthy person very bad.
  • 3 0
I get where you are coming from, but and you are right that most people overestimate the severity of injuries...but, spine, neck, and head injuries can mess up your life real quick, and can happen in surprisingly benign crashes. If you fell backwards off a 1 story roof onto a driveway and hit the back of your head, you could end up with some serious brain damage, just depends on luck. There is a difference between calculated risk and just being cavalier.

You don't have a clue. My son and a team mate went up for a header, barely collided. My son was shorter and caught the other player below the eye. No one watching thought anything of it, they barely touched. A few minutes in the player asked to sit out a little and wasn't feeling well. Long story short he ended up with a concussion and out of school for weeks.

Do what you do, but calling people an idiot for not wearing a helmet, who are far better at a particular skill than yourself are capable, is true idiocy!

Don't be a donut, wear your helmet.

Such sick riding on the whistler video
