Must Watch: Bas Van Steenbergen in 'Canvas'

bigquotes"Filming this video was easily the most fun time I've spent in Virgin, Utah. Having only been to the area for Rampage, and associating it with stress that comes with that, it was nice to really see the place in a more chill setting.

For this video, I really wanted to push myself and showcase my own riding style in this unique terrain. If I have to be honest, I've never really been proud of what I've been able to do out there for Rampage. So to be able to take my time, get familiar with the terrain, and make something that showcases my riding was awesome.

I'm super stoked with what Calvin, Peter and I were able to build and film out there, I can't thank those two enough!!"

Bas buttering up a big ole' Utah double drop.

'CANVAS' depicts Utah as a blank canvas for Bas. Building and riding what feels right will always be one of the most rewarding process' for a rider.

Speed was the name of the game!

Huge thanks to the presenting sponsor Maxxis Tires, as well too both supporting sponsors Hyper Bicycles and Deity Components for making this video possible!

style is better than tricks and this video is a great demonstration of that

I agree, in the same way that semenuk's video show style is better than tricks

This is nice!! Drone filming from behind gave a totally different vision and you can see how big are these jumps,

got to expect some follow cam drones at the next rampage surely. They are already doing computer game levels of insane so may as well make it look like it too!

Strange that he was wearing clippless pedals for most of the video yet when there was close-ups of his feet he was on deity Tmac's. You can see the clipless pedals at 1:05... I guess its because Deity dont sell clipless pedals

cool vid tho
  • 3 5
From what I saw mostly it was flat pedals..kinda hard to tell though
  • 53 3
Interesting, I was just watching his lines, not the pedals.
  • 15 3
it could also be because he's switching pedals to suit the specific riding he's doing

@scott-townes: Don't hate on foot fetishes.
  • 2 1
how much time have you spent looking at the video??!!
Looks like he can handle both flat and clipless pretty well I would say
  • 2 2
Check out 1:41 Pretty clear he's using flats as well. I'm no pro athlete, but would find it challenging to switch back and forth! It would be interesting to know which lines were preferred with/without clips and why.

Glad someone else noticed. At the start the style of his whips and the way his feet stay locked in with pedals stood out and I thought "Oh sick, rad style even with clips on". Then he dragged a foot on the scrub and I had to go back and watch the whole thing with my face 4 inches from the screen. I bet he stuck on the flatties for that scrub and just ran with it the rest of the shoot. Love little details like that.

Unreal riding and shooting by the team though. Didn't mind watching it twice.

@ben-cathro: and they way he kicks the ground to go back in line and control at that speed and after dragging the handlebar is very vey nice

A big thing that always gets overlooked is the amount of time building the jumps and lines for the video. Loved seeing the square edges and the attention to detail on everything. Very well done

This just takes you away. Awesome.

"I've never been very proud of what I've done at Rampage" goes to show what an absolute different planet these riders live on. Even elite athletes need to stretch their creative wings.

Edits like this make we wish I just lived in a van in the desert.

This edit looks exactly how I envision myself riding. When I clear that 10 foot table (barely) with A VERY slight twist of the bars this is what I think I look like. Mad talent in this video.

That's amazing! Big riding yet so relaxed and smooth, is that a dream?! Nice work!

I’ve seen this line in person riding the ‘15 rampage site and it’s pretty incredible to see it ridden. The ridge is steeper than most lines out there and the speeds for those massive gaps is insane.

 Style > Tricks. So sick

Just another day at the office. Why can that be what I do at the office?

Hyper release these bikes already! Gaahhh Big Grin

i still don't understand the Hyper sponsorship. Totally stoked that they are supporting Bas, but for the life of me i cant figure out why. Who watches Bas' bangers and then buys a Walmart grade bike, which as far as i can tell is all Hyper makes? If you know something I don't, correct the record but on the face of it is seems strange.

@freestyIAM: It looks pretty sick tho right?!
  • 1 0
@freestyIAM: dad mom or kid walks into Walmart to buy a bike. Googles hyper bikes and bas comes up sending it. Gives credibility to the brand. Gt/mongoose does the exact same thing but they actually offer the pro models too (which are usually only found in bike shops and not the big retailers). But the bulk of their business is still department store bikes.

Makes me wanna ride ,and think I ride like that ,but in my mind I do :-))))) ,nice video and excellent tune ,give the video a real free ride one

Such beautiful riding. Im wondering if the last minute fast plant was intentional, or a save. Either way a good reason to learn that useful trick.

Drones for Rampage! It´s been a long wait...

 Damn that was good!!!

Does not matter what pedal this kid is riding. "Amazing!" is completely independent from what's under his feet.

Beautifully done video. I was really hoping he would drop a cave man in the video

That hand drag scrub... WOW! The multiple angles only multiplied how awesome that was

Please have Rampage this year. 50/50 Chance?

Some sort of electronic type of music :/ Dudes ripped it from a production standpoint though.
  • 2 1
Not everyone is going to have your taste in music. The song choice was great for the production/feel.

@ericlikesbikes: I'm more so referring to how it seems as if most mtb videos produced on a high level always run some sorta edm track, it'd just be cool to have variety.

Perhaps you should do a fan re-cut to alternate tunes... @Thegnarberries:
