My bike managed to unlock itself on the freeway a few days ago, I got super lucky and it still hung by a strap 5cm above the ground until I stopped... So I wouldn't drive like that with a bike strapped on my roof
I see this as more money going into the bike industry from another source. If Subaru wants to pay money to get an ad like this, I am all for it. Not the best video but i'm not complaining.
Looks like the Thule, I have three of those but I wouldn't clamp to the chain ring. He was clamped to the downtube when power sliding. Side note, the clamp doesn't work well if it can't clamp completely around the downtube. Almost lost a Knolly Podium doing 100 down the hiway. Like @jissse it hung on but my door is trashed, bike was good to go!
to be fair a rotate the crank so that is against the leg of the rack and use the bunge cord just to be shure that if i wand to go a lithe faster on the motorway or a back road it will no go any where
I lost my bike off the top of my car whilst drifting an onramp. Had my fatbike eject off the back of my tray mount rack while rallying my suv through a dirt parking lot.
Can't say i trust my racks much and now triple check them and add backup ratchet straps. Luckily nothing was damaged
This is exactly why Brandon Semenuk is valuable to his sponsors- he can even make Subaru look like the raddest thing ever! -- Not something I would have previously considered. I now know I would watch anything he and Rupert see fit to drop - even a car commercial.
Semenuk had been racing amateur rally in open classes across North America in his Impreza for a while now. That's his race rig half apart in the beginning of the video.
What Subaru is that? It looks like the old STi hatch but with the new ones lights and face but not really and it has no intercooler scoop. Is it the new XV?
Just thinking the same thing. Brandon Semenuk on a bike and it's immediately "must watch"? Or is that label sold to any advertiser willing to pay a certain price tag?
I'm guessing a commercial like this pays about $2,000 - $20,000 depending in how many countries they air it. Super stoked for Brandon he got booked for a commercial like this one. Professional feerider mountainbikers are probably one of the most underpaid athletes looking at how much risks they take. If anyone deserves to be in commercials like these it would be freeride mountainbikers, and not for example motocross riders who make millions of US Dolllars per year.
I couldn't disagree more with the people moaning about this being a must watch.... As someone who loves making films as much as I love riding bikes the combo of Semenuk and Rupert Walker is like 2 Gods have combined. I really think we're lucky as a sport to have such talent on both sides of the lens and even though this is an advert anyone can see how well made it is. Really hope they continue to work together for many years to come.
Eh no different than any other vid being displayed on the front page. I'll watch it regardless. That was such a sick edit even if it was just an advert. Soooo did anyone else notice that exit line he took off that berm about 3/4ths too early? good god that was wild.
I have a pair of Thule roof racks that I really like. They are the type that clamps the front tire. That said, I would never drive like that when they are loaded. My Kuat hitch rack though? Will totally slide around on some gravel when I'm using that.
Probably pretty well. Mine was well used by the previous owner and it took some serious and continuous rocking to do anything from when I owned it. The bolts will come loose and strip a bit but it never toppled over.
Great, another thing to get the WRX guys driving even faster on the local fire roads. I'm on the other side of that blind turn you turd. In my tacoma, running the shuttle home, with a cold beer in my hand, driving 10mph. Chill out. /hating
Traffic in Canada? Dang. You guys should come to Atlanta or L.A., two worst cities for traffic in America! Makes me want to move to Canada, but apparently we're in the same boat!
Disclaimer said it was a closed course. If Subaru handed me a brand new car on a road all to myself with instructions to floor it I would happily oblige.
I'm sick of these constant videos we get of pro drivers shown sliding out and destroying fire roads. If the industry keeps promoting such things pretty soon they'll take away our fire roads!
Would be interesting to see what damage was done to the bike with the clamping around the frame and all that shaking about on the fire road. My guess is the the bike, likely does not look shiny and new where it was clamped.
That was my point, fork mount might have worked better. Look at 0;18 or 1:27 rack with clamp around downtube. With hard the bike is shaking around, that must have been some damage to at least the point if not the frame itself. Not certain if it's alu or carbon, either way not good.
What deems something worthy of a MUST WATCH? I enjoyed that, but it seems clear that a company like Subaru or Trek can easily pull strings for a label like "must watch". I have seen way better edits by amateur film makers here on PB. Either way, I guess its their website and they should be able to do whatever they want anyhow. Respect to Semenuk always
I can vouch that a crosstek with CVT is not very fun to drive, damn miracle the driver got it to drift at all on those corners. Give me a WRX with a manual transmission any day.
Also, in my part of the woods, most MTB guys are pickup truck guys with tailgate pads.
Yeah, the Crosstrek would be my next car if they had at least the same turbo 4 in the Forester. I will say that the Outback I bought for my wife and our new twins with the CVT is amazing. Slow, but one really well built car.
I've got a '14 legacy. Agree for The price it seems sold. The 2.5i is adequate.. The cvt is awesome at certain things. Mainly for icy highway driving and coming down from top of the mountain on icy days. No brakes needed just adjust the cvt.. I didn't even use the paddles much until it snowed, and the highways got icy, now I completely appreciate the cvt.
The XV in that video sounded a lot like a WRX. Im thinkin' it might have a motor swap. Which is a really fun idea since the XV is based on an Impreza platform anyway. Hmmm
Cheers! I finally picked up on that the third time I watched the video. I'm interested in buying one of these, but not interested in CVT, prefer a manual, and Subaru is the only manufacturer left to produce a manual AWD SUV.
And that is how you bring the sport to the next level; we can only grow with exposure and financial backing from larger external entities. Thanks Brandon.
I have a Crosstrek, and it's one of the slowest cars I've ever driven. I hope that's a new model they have coming out, even my wife talks about how little power it has when trying to merge.
I was hoping for a legitimate biking video, but it's cool that he can get in such big commercials. They should have hucked the car off of a twenty foot drop! LOL.
I don't know what to point out here, the rally wheels and tires on the crosstrek, the fact that the bike rack wouldn't last long like that, nor would the bike.
Or the fact that Semenuk almost creams a tree multiple times
WHO shapes this lines and build these jump ?? I guess Brandon participates a bit but he has to have a massive build crew !! their trails are always so mindblowing !!
I used to love Subaru... until I had a lemon and Subaru Canada gave me the royal FU experience in customer service. I've been screwed by companies before, but those guys were the lowest of the low... so here I am, 4 yrs later keeping my promise to take every opportunity I can to discourage people from buying one of their cars. (and let's be honest, they work like crazy but are fuglier than sin)
Anyone else notice the rally spec gravel tires on the Subaru?! Not sure about the rest of the world but here only mum's and baby boomers drive Subaru XV's, I should know my mum owns one. Needs a turbo charged version at least. Nice to see some real MTB-ing in a car ad instead leisurely XC riding.
I noticed those wheels right away (see my name) and then heard the motor. No N/A boxer motor sounds like that. Im thinkin it had a motor swap as well. That video made me want an XV for a motor swap!
I was going to buy a new Subaru. When I test drove it the steering wheel shook like a SOB. The salesman tried to tell me thats how all Subaru's drive. Im guessing his teenage kid drove it into a curb. No sale made that day.
BTW, Semenuk is a beast
Yeah my WRX has that "numb" feeling on center. Ask Matt Farah on thesmokingtire, he says every subaru has that feeling until you "Load" it up in the corners. Kinda sucks, but if that steering wheel was shaking that bad it must be rotor related (mine are pretty warped).
Stiffer steering rack bushing fix that pretty quick. Getting a front caster kit also makes a huge difference. It's a shame that they build the cars that way on purpose to please the ninnies. But thankfully it's easy to fix.
Well executed (aesthetically) though it may be, still feels like a pretty crude attempt by Suburu's marketing department to try and appeal to an action sports audience.
I was about to add that it's almost insulting, but judging by the comments already left, it'd seem I'm alone in thinking this.
I think its a pretty solid attempt by subaru, its not like Semenuk is a factory rally driver or anything.. so someone from subaru had to find out/already knew Semenuk was into rallying their cars and figured he would be a good candidate for this commercial.
It's not any different then the ad for mitsubishi that Cam Zink and Cam McCaul did awhile back, except this had more riding/show cased the car's abilities more.
his style is unbeliebavle.. I would watch it all day long. Brandon should post a video every week, just some random riding,no pressure, I´d love to watch it!
Dope, what an epic piece of content and so rad to see MTB getting cross over from other industries. Thumbs up for more! P.S. anyone know the name of the song?
Does anyone else think/hope we're on the verge of having a Subaru or some other vehicle in a Mountain Biker (e.g. Semenuk) edition? Our sport is getting huuuugge!!!
Hey guys, I have made a mountain bike edit for 2015/16. Would love it if you checked it out and told me what you think Here's the link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWToJ737zK4ï»
Can Pinkbike please get their videos together on the mobile platform. Why the hell do these videos play in low definition and don't give you an option to watch in HD? Such a pain in the a**!
It's an Impreza xv cosstrek. Not wrx cuz no turbo. It is lifted compared to a standard Impreza and wrx, and I think they put slightly larger stock tires
Thanks for the correction. I assumed it was a WRX because Subaru has pushed the rally angle with it before. I just looked up the XV Crosstrek and the reviews aren't good, I guess it's for people that need a SUV but don't want to buy a SUV? Color me confused.
That's correct. The problem with it is that there isn't a lot of cargo space for a car that's meant for off road, snow, road trips. It's like if vw made a lifted gti
You'll notice in that article that they make a point of saying the head gasket issues occured on older EJ series motors, ending in 2011. That XV has a different motor entirely.
Just test drove a bunch of Subaru's, and none of them had power and handling like that. Must have been a WRX, because all the rest are slow as shit out of the hole, which is why we kept our Toyota Venza.
Subaru's N/A engines have their work cut out for them, what with having to drive all four wheels and the added weight of AWD just makes them underpowered and heavy on the gas.
yeah it's not sure that he is here .... but he's morer than capable of :p just watch olddd footage of him , he rocked already .. one of my all time favorite vids www.26in.fr/videos/brandon-semenuk-sur-2-et-4-r-1.html
i use this one without a problem www.pinkbike.com/photo/11214564
to be fair a rotate the crank so that is against the leg of the rack and use the bunge cord just to be shure that if i wand to go a lithe faster on the motorway or a back road it will no go any where
luckily this crosstrek featured in the ad has an FB series engine, which supposedly has done away with these reliability issues
-"Sh*t sh*t sh*t sh*t ! "
You go up with the car
You go down with the bike
And... the car come back home alone ?
I've done a few shuttles in a buddies Subaru a few years back, I was shocked at how well it drove up the Mount 7 shuttle road.
Its in the details film editors!
I was about to add that it's almost insulting, but judging by the comments already left, it'd seem I'm alone in thinking this.

Appeals to both sides of me. As a biker and as a subaru owner. WHAT MORE COULD YOU WANT!?
Here's the link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWToJ737zK4ï»
2. BS ride his bike down the hill.
3. So how is BS gonna back to his car? hitchhike??
The WRX looks so pedestrian now. Far cry from the original WRX commercials with the bug eyes back in the early 2000s.
Add a little Semenuk.
How the hell is this a "must watch"?!
