Must Watch: Danny MacAskill is the World's Best Babysitter

May 20, 2019
by James Smurthwaite

Wipe away the Monday blues with a brand new edit from Danny MacAskill. This one has apparently been a passion project for Danny and Stu Thomson, made during the downtime of their other projects, to celebrate ten years of working together.

Danny turns his hand to babysitting Stu's daughter and revisits some of his most famous video locations with her in tow... literally.

bigquotesIn his latest film Danny MacAskill takes on some child care the only way he knows how... by taking them for a bike ride!

No children were involved in any stunts during the making of Danny Daycare!

 This will be nice to look back at when she gets older!

 If she keeps riding with Danny then we will all look back and say "no wonder she dominates WCDH and Rampage".

 @Boardlife69: And Rachel will say, no way, she works hard on her own too!

 This is how thanee seagrave became so good at riding lol

 Thank you Danny for providing the most fun I've had laying in my bed late at night in years. Thank you.

 @Boardlife69: ouch! BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURN.

 @DrZeek: not sure if that was intentional, but I read that in the voice of Michael Kelso from "That 70's Show".
  • 1 2
 @MatthewYoung4: well then roll her over and attach your seat post to her trailer and take take her for a ride like in the video. If that doesn't work (and who are we kidding here?) then do what Danny did and use a doll.

 One of the best vids in a while.
  • 34 1
 My Danny Macaskill obsessed 2 year old is already asking me to do stunts when we’re out together on my bike (Mac Ride rather than trailer). This isn’t helping!
  • 11 0
 Also, @endurasport when is your toddler range going to be available? Or was that a custom one for Daisy?
  • 5 1
 @lewiscraik: It is a Singletrailer made by tout-terrain.de/de/die-produkte/anhaenger/

But I never saw anybody trying to do a backflip with it.
  • 4 0
 @blackforest: 1350 Euros - ouch
  • 6 0
 I know what you're talking about. My 5 year old pressures me into popping manuals and wheelies and going really sideways on the jumps.
  • 6 1
 @thingswelike: try to get one 2nd / 3rd hand. Ok, also then they are pretty expensive, but you can sell them for most of the money you spend before. I sold it for 100EUR more than I got it at 2nd hand.

Nevertheless, it is the best kids trialer ever build!
  • 3 0
 I would have loved a trailer like that when my kids were younger. We had a pretty basic 2 wheeled one so I was limited to wider trails. Also had the capability to roll which left the little one dangling from the 5 point harness a couple times. But they always loved it. Used to hook it onto the tag a long, which was appropriately called "The Triple Mega Tandem". Nothing like having 2 little girls shouting "faster Daddy" while your quads feel like they're going to explode up every hill, and when they're catching air over every water bar on the downs. Never tried flipping it.
  • 1 0
 @Herge2000: I do this with my mid range kids bikes as my daughter grows out of them.
  • 1 0
 @Herge2000: They also make a trail-a-bike on the same chassis. It's good, but it could be so much better. That being said, I'm getting a lot of miles out of mine and we have no problems down rocky techy descents.

  • 2 0
 @laksboy: I've also had a look on the streamliner of tout terrain.
For me the drawback is the (heavy) frontweel to be carried. We decided to use the follow-me (family-cycling.com/93r5Wql5-familycycling-english/followme-function). So the kids can use their usual bike and if needed you can attach them to your bike.
  • 3 0
 But Mac Ride is the Best !! You can wheelie and manual with it!
  • 2 0
 @audric: Oh I use the macride too! Often at the same time with 1 kid in front and one behind on the Streamliner. Its a good setup. The only couple of downsides to the macride are:

1. Knee-out pedaling it forces which causes achy knees on long climbs (30min +).
2. I drip sweat all over my daughter, which she doesn't like.
3. You can't brake hard or suddenly or you will send your new best riding buddy over the bars. As long as you're gradual, totally fine even on super steep stuff. (But we've had some close calls)
4. Definitely been uppercut by the sudden standing up of my daighter.
5. Age 4-5 they really start getting to big to fit in the cockpit (see number 1) and too heavy to pedal around as dead weight. Which is where the TT Streamliner shines.
  • 2 0
 @laksboy: ahaha i totally agree with you on that
My knees hurt just looking at the Mac Ride but the giggles are worth the pain!
  • 1 0
 @audric: I was expecting my knees/hips to hurt when riding with my son on the Mac Ride, but it hasn’t been a problem.
  • 1 0
 @lewiscraik: glad for you!
I love the Mac Ride, but i cannot pedal too far with it with my lil one

 @BenPea: at least he didn't put his tyres on a picnic table in this one, I'm always telling my kid that is poor form.
  • 1 0
 @Riggbeck: Tyres and are fine, feet while eating are a massive no-no though.
  • 1 0
 @BenPea: "no uncooked joints on the table"....open to interpretation I guess, maybe I'm being harsh including tyres.
  • 7 0

 You know exactly what this video is going to be before you watch it, and it STILL had me laughing my ass off as soon as he did the first jump.
  • 9 0
 I had a bike shop mate who would actually do this with his kid on shop rides. Not quite Danny style but he would hit jumps. He would roll the trailer at least once a ride. The poor kid would be crying most of the time. That kid would be 27 by now. I wonder if he rides?
  • 9 0
 I love how they have to tell us that no children were involved in any stunts.

 Danny must have cycled a long way starts off a long Loch Lomond then up too Killin then off to Isle of skye not bad for a 4 minute ride!
  • 2 0
 That kid is cute! I was going to buy a little bike for the smallest grandkid but my son said "no" says his kid is to young, that little girl was all of three years old and she'e riding better than most people I see on the trail.
  • 1 0
 My eldest son had his Strider before his second birthday, his younger brother will be getting one before his first birthday (with the baby rocker adaptor). As long as they can sit up they are old enough!

 And in the meantime, I have trouble hauling my Thule Chariot up a mild fire road...

 To be fair, the Thule Chariot weighs about the same as a bus, and that's before your kid has loaded it with their essentials for the day.

 @xice: They use the same design for their trail-a-bike, the Streamliner. It's a very capable chassis.

  • 1 0
 @laksboy: i think it's a great idea. Sure, you can't go send or down everything, but you can go for a good ride with your offspring.
  • 4 0
 @xice: Yeah you can't send it, but you can descend almost anything. I got 2.5 hrs out of my 5 year old on it 2 weekends ago. He carries his own weight. My 4 year old rides it too. But she's too much of a princess to pedal. She just cracks the whip and tell me to go faster.
  • 1 0

 @laksboy: :-) i meant..

 @laksboy:

ha ha ha… I had a Trail A Bike for a while when my triplet boys were young. Took one them off road on a trail I used to frequent -- learned the hard way, you cant bunny hop well with a Trail A Bike.... Joey went SUPERMAN on me.

you also cant get up over curbs well with a tandem... still have teeth marks on my back when I tried getting up over a curb with the wife on the back seat of our Burley tandem.
  • 1 0
 @BikesNBites: yeah bunny hopping is a challenge. We've definitely made good use of the trail-a-bikes bash guard... "LEVEL your pedals!!!!"

I guess it depends on the tandem. Mine has 170 up front and 160 in the rear. It handles plowing into and through, pretty much everything.

 What kind of bike was the girl riding at the end?
  • 2 0
 Islabike cnoc I believe...
  • 2 1
 It is an Islabike CNOC 16. My daughter had one at 3 1/2 after a balance bike and rode it within 5 seconds unassisted.

She is on the 20" wheel Islabike Bein now - they are just the best kids bikes out there, without spending crazy money.
  • 1 0
 @JiminOz: @dav82:

Thanks! Can't get those in the US anymore. Just bought my daughter (5 yrs) the Spawn Yoji 16. Not cheap but it took her all of 3 minutes to say "I can do it. I don't need help." She tooled around on a balance bike (Wishbone) for 2 years. My younger son (3.5 yrs) has a Strider 12 sport and doesn't like it as much as the wishbone. I think it's just because he watched his big sis have a lot of fun on the Wishbone.

A light bike with a freewheel and handbrakes makes learning sooooo much easier for kids.
  • 2 0
 @jtforester: Good kids bikes are like good adult bikes - expensive! But people buy a $100 kids bike from walmart that weighs 10kg, then give it to their 15kg kid to ride and wonder why they don't like it. That's like me riding a bike that weighs 50+ kg ! Imagine riding something the weight of two E bikes with nothing but your own legs to power it....

The Isla bike CNOC is about 5.5kg and everything on it is like a scaled down in size, but quality version of a full size component. So they can reach brake levers properly, the seat is built for small backsides, pedals the right width and even the right distance apart. Isla Rowntree was a Cyclocross champion who couldn't find good quality bikes for her kids so decided to build her own.

We have the same issues in Oz with shipping. They did have a US shipping option a while back but maybe DT's import taxes have killed that? Fortunately we have UK visitors who just bring them out when they come over.

The only downside is the kids grow out of them very quickly - fortunately the resale value is good. I have mine lined up for my riding buddies who have daughters a year or two behind mine so they are winning all the way...

For all the expense, nothing is better than watching your kid ride off on a bike they just sat on for the first time two seconds ago, having never pedalled a bike before. Proudest moment as a Dad by far!

This was 5 minutes later...

  • 3 0
 It's a Tout Terrain Singletrailer. Really well built and also comes with a price tag of like USD 1600.
  • 2 0
 Also has 200mm of travel.
  • 2 0
 They use the same suspension design on their Trail-a-bike. And it works REALLY well for kid hauling down technical trail
  • 1 0
 I literally just laughed out loud.
  • 1 0
 That bike trailer looks legit! Anyone know which one it is?
  • 1 0
 Never mind... Singletrailer, and $1700 my kids won’t use it often enough to justify that. :-/
  • 2 0
 @ytjodave: Their trail-a-bike is built on the same capable chassis. Its spendy, but resale is good, and its a great hallpass multiplier for yourself especially if you have multiple kids. In my case it's a guilt-free ride if I can take 1-3 of the kids with me. I get to ride the trails I want, get the workout, and get to show my littles "the good stuff" while chasing the wheel of my 11yo.
