Trials and mountain bike rider Danny MacAskill just released his new video The Slabs and once again amazes us with riding we’ve never seen before. After hitting the Gym about a year ago with his trials bike the Scotsman now opts for the mountain bike and explores new terrain back home in the Cuillins on the Isle of Skye. Inspired by some of the world best climbers and their dedication Danny came up with the idea of hitting some rock slabs himself. Danny takes us on an intense and nerve-wracking ride down the rocky and insanely steep slabs. Awesome drone and POV perspective filmed on GoPro only, offer a fascinating onboard experience.

Danny’s latest video, a We are Peny Media production directed by both Robbie Meade and Danny, shows Danny scrambling to just below the summit of Sgurr Dubh Beag / Little Black Peak (733m / 2,432ft.), one of the most technical sections of the Dubh Ridge, unroped with his bike on his back. From here the real challenge begins. Set against the magnificent backdrop of unrivalled mountain wilderness views, Danny navigates his way down an extremely technical one kilometre route over a very steep ledge system of black 'boiler-plated' Gabbro slabs, exposed steps and drop offs, buttresses and grassy clefts, to the shores of Loch Coruisk at sea level.

 the drone footage was a bit too spinny. A bit more "cinematic" / subtle look would support the riding instead distracting it

 This is inherent to the way FPV drone flies. It's kinda hard to control on lower and uneven speeds - you can't brake, only tilt back and apply thrust other way (but view will jump quite unpleasantly), and you can't reverse confidently because you don't see where're you going. So you must always move forward, and if your target suddenly stops moving the only option is to orbit around it.

Using drone that can hover in this case might not be best too, because it'd be too slow to react when Danny actually does faster moves.

I think, for example, Sam Reynolds does it well in his drone footage. He just follows the rider with somewhat of a same distance / height, but it might be easier on darkfest style riding.

 I agree with @bikefuturist. The drone spinning and orbiting really detracted from the video... almost seemed like the drone pilot wanted to showcase their drone-flying skills instead of Danny's riding. Half the time it was so disorienting you could barely tell what was going on in the video.

I know from personal experience that making watchable footage in many ways is harder than hitting tiny gaps and cool lines that only other pilots will understand. So I figured I need to chip in for this guy Smile

 @pashky: You can fly a racing drone standing perfectly still in the air just like any other quadcopter, and for a half decent pilot it's not particularly difficult.
The problem here is the lack of a controllable gimbal for the camera like a DJI Mavic would have. The camera on a race quadcopter is usually angled up so that you can still see level-ish at forward tilt, i.e. when flying at speed. So when hovering still, the camera will point up, and you'd have to fly lower than Danny to still see him, but then you'd also see sky instead of down into the valley.
So it has to keep moving forward/orbiting to get a decent view. I think for this instance, less cam tilt would have served better, but it gets better after the initial intro shot.

 I really liked the drone footage. It really gave a three dimensional perspective and showed the enormity of the area. I think this was one of the most beautifully shot videos I’ve seen since Gee’s Ridgeline.

 Check out Andrew J Lawrence on instagram, he did this any pretty much every other drone video you've seen, the guys basically a jedi and I get the impression if this looks spinny, then it was 100% intended to be.

 @rarerider: that was exactly my point, maybe I just didn't explain it well. You can't keep hardmounted camera fixed on something moving with varying speed. With high uptilit as soon as you level to hover your subject either goes out of frame, or you have to lower altitude which is very noticeable and may not be possible in close proximity to terrain. With zero uptilt you'd be looking into ground once you start moving.

 @nlibes: agree - all technical talk aside the filming was disorientating and really seemed to reduce the scale...
seems like a few test shoots at other locations to ‘proof’ the videography concept would help. Just didn’t feel like the right tools to tell the story.

I didn’t finish the video (scrubbed through to avoid air sickness) however what I did watch I spent thinking “I wish I could tell how steep that is, or how fast he is going on that section” yet with a moving camera and target you instantly loose the ability to judge speed and likewise Birdseye view and understanding of angle and distance is diminished.

 There were a few bits where the spinning came in a bit fast, but I'm guessing this is not an easy job, especially with minimal takes (if there was even more than one). I thought it gave a great perspective on the surroundings and lines he was riding. The drone 360 around Danny from 4:35 for example ... I think this is mint and provides a very interesting shot.

 @BigAlfonz: there are certainly ‘moments’ but, it really isn’t the job of the viewer to search for them... that’s what making a movie, cinematography and editing all should combine to do?

Here’s Danny - risking his ass, in a trail riding helmet. The idling down what most of us probably would consider a cliff, sure he has the skills - but death is still an option on this one.

Then cinematically the effort just doesn’t match... basically the movie opens with an establishing shot, by drone... then stays in that shot for the entire moment (excluding a few seconds of POV). Has anyone ever seen a movie at the cinema that just showed the establishing shot for the whole movie? Or variants there of?

Red Bull, Santa Cruz, amazing rider, crazy location.
1 camera man, 1 drone and it feels like very little planning or effort to tell the best story possible from the adventure...

 spot on. drone filming was terrible and took away from the skills that Danny is showcasing. i kept thinking the whole time during the video, "just slow down and let's let Danny's riding be the showcase, instead of how cool of a drone pilot you are".

Awesome project, rad riding, terrible documentation. Do it again and show us what Danny does best.

 Wonder how good those Continental Kaiser are, really hard to have reviews/feedback of the last versions.
The price is right, made in EU, supposedly great rubber but the thread looks kind of shallow and I wonder how a fairly light 1000g tyre survives aggressive riding (like a DD would)

 Conti has great rubber but shitty carcas. They are very grippy, but you will be lucky if they seal.

 I'd have to disagree, just put my Kaiser 29ers on and the profile depth seems to be on par or even steeper to my Assegai / DHR II combo.
They seal very well, zero issues there.

Due to the amount of snow and type of riding in the local terrain here, I don't have any relevant experience to share regarding pinch flats. But traction on snow is better than on Maxxis, in case that's of interest haha

I even got the Speedking tyres sealed on sram Roam wheels and stopping to "bleed" sealant after two rides.

 @Mr-Gilsch: Using Stans, it was not sealants faoul, all other tires (Maxxiss, Schwalbe) seal without a sealant in the first place. But Conti were leaking like crazy through the tire bed.

They even look a little different. The first ones i had leaked through the side wall like crazy and it really sucked getting them sealed no matter what sealant. Now they are just as painfree as maxxis for me. Also using standard stan‘s sealant. If you like the rubber maybe give them another try. The newer version has a small „tubeless ready“ on the side wall, the old ones didn‘t have that.

 About casing resistance, any comments?

 @Arierep: I attempted to switch to Conti. I tried the new Der Kaizer (after the update). I found the grip to be tremendous, and preferred the ride feel over any Maxxis I've had. Unfortunately, weak casing lead to many pinch flats so I was forced to crawl back to Maxxis. My last pinch flat on a Kaizer was @ 30psi with an insert.... not sure what else I could have done really.

 @lkubica: get 2020 production. Got mine from bike24 (they always state production year). Seated them up without sealant on Spike33s and left them 48h to stretch, no pressure loss

 @Arierep: I have 2 rear wheels, one w/WE + Cush Core, other w/Kaiser + Tannus Armor. They are both a couple of the best tires I've ever used. WE rear tends to wear pretty quickly and tear lugs a bit, Kaiser so far seems like it will last a good bit longer. WE has more knob spacing so does ok in mud where Kaiser is more for dry conditions. Kaiser is ~150g lighter but not sure on durability yet. WE hasn't given me issues with punctures or tearing and I've put a few holes in the Cush Core Pro insert w/o any pinchflats. I can't tell much difference in rolling resistance on my 37 lb Spec Enduro.

Also, Kaiser seated easily. It took a couple rides to hold air but didn't weep sealant at all. I have about 12 rides on it now and you can just start to see wear, where WE would be 1/3rd worn out.

Seems like a winner to me so far!

 My wife and I got married on the shore of that loch and I never once thought those steeps were rideable when I was looking at them in person. Truly incredible skills and riding. Also a miracle they were able to get a dry, sunny day too!

 I know the feeling conveyed in this video pretty well. That "holy crap this is steep, gotta get low, use the brakes, but not that much brake, kinda hope this works out" feeling. Only for me it's on stuff with about 5 percent of the danger factor.

 So, there I was at the pub with Danny and I say... Lemme show you this line, you're gonna love it! and he say's Nooo fawking way.. and we run it and about halfway down the damn alarm goes off someplace & in my head, I realize I'm gonna be late for work & have to get my lazy butt outa bed ...  Great video, to get it that dry on Skye too! Looked pretty darn steep in places, the scale is the most impressive part of this, just holding on and having the legs is super impressive in itself. Things like the original crazy train chutes, trespasser steep bits, the sections off the side of kaibers pass are crazy steep too and dont have the grip of these rocks. Kaisers for the win on rock slabs.

 Danny is a skilled rider no doubt. I have to ask did he hike it up all the way with his bike? The footage in the beginning shows him hiking it up with his bike on his back. I would think after that long way up with a 27# bike on your back, not sure if you have the energy reserves to go down that smoothly. Again, I am not Danny, and don't have sponsor setting me up with helicopter drop off.
