Must Watch: Mike Hopkins Examines the Experiment That is Childhood in 'Siblings'

DB- Siblings

Our stories are all different, yet the same, and the names are endless: Adventure buddy, co-pilot, copy-cat, tag-along, queen, king... The list is long, but what it boils down to is simply brother or sister, or as I like to put it, best friend, worst enemy.

Childhood was like one giant experiment and, being the younger sibling, my fate as human guinea pig was sealed from the get-go. But like Dad always said, "Every scar is one part story, and one part wisdom," and by the age of 10 us kids could have opened our own library. Over the years, we gained a lot of “wisdom” together, trying to best each other and take on the world. Through it all, bikes have fueled our adventures, sparked our imaginations, led us through a few battles, and continually reminded us of what’s most important: we’re all family.

As kids, our ticket to freedom was also our ticket to ride. And let's be honest, nothing settles the fate of that final chocolate chip cookie like a super-sonic pedal-cranking race to the end of the street.

Amen! The kids are always asking for videos to watch and they're gonna get this one - on repeat.

 The front brakey at 2:53...classic
  • + 7
sounds like he says 'ohh you knob!" lol.
  • + 2
@tobiusmaximum: I play hockey here with Cal, the braked one. Trust me, he had to tone it down to say that. The brakey trickster, Mike's dad, was lucky to not get a stick in the spokes.

Awesome video all around!

This was pretty awesome, my brother and sister and I did these things from riding the vert clapped together quarter pipe at the end of our driveway to counting the lines on the road as we tried to do epic wheelies.

We are all in our 50's (I'm about to turn 57) and we all still do much of these same things. I love to ride and can't wait to get back on my bike after months dealing with an acute kidney injury & seeing what my sis and Team Dirt have been up to trail building.

Thanks for the trip in the way back machine, it made my day Smile

Ditto. At around age 8, so more than a few decades ago, my younger brother and the two neighbour brothers were stoked to see a dumptruck tip a load of fine stone/gravel in my grandpa's driveway, to be spread over it the upcoming weekend. We were told any shovelling would be paid for with classic kid currency, ice cream. By the next afternoon we'd dug a 2' deep jump pit and laid scaffolding planks on top of paint cans as a ramp. Up the approach hill we pushed our banana seat, chest-high handlebar bar steeds, boyhood bravado driving the argument over the starting order. Guess who went first.

It was unfortunate for me the Roach stem pad had not already been invented. Case deluxe.

@dlford: ((Grin)) ~ We have to be related... we used to set up jumps in new culdesacs out of the dirt excavated for the foundation of a new home (launch into the pit). My kid brother Eric did the most epic flying W & landed dead in the middle of the dugout part feet still off the pedals ... he was gimped for a week (didn't phase his red Schwinn stingray) Smile

This one hit me in the feels. Totally my childhood right here. My brother and I use to tear shit up on bikes in the 80's. I had a Diamond back F1 and he had a Super Viper. Diamond backs were all we rode. Now at 45 him almost 40. I'm still riding and watching him struggle with drug addiction. Wish I could get him back on a bike. Nothing makes me feel more alive than getting more air than I did when I was a kid.

I really enjoy the DB vidoes, just like everybody else here. Seems to be more about bikes and the love of bikes then them trying to sell us, but we all know the truth.

Once again the proud owner of a 2010 db mission 3 ,
  • + 3
I had a 2008 mission 3 up until a bit over a year ago. Got a crack at the top tube down tube junction. Because of that and that it was 26" didn't think l could sell it for what it was 'worth' to me (l really did love it). Didn't want it to waste away in the shed, my solution was to give it to a young lad in the neighbourhood. He got the crack welded and is now having a great time ripping around on it. Made us both happy l reckon.
