NOTHING'S FOR FREE
The History of Freeride Mountain Biking

It all started with a motley crew of blue-collar kids looking to be a part of something different, something people at the time couldn’t understand. And then everything changed.

From fringe sport to global phenomenon, Nothing’s For Free chronicles the birth and legacy of freeride mountain biking. The film charts a course through a three-decade journey with the pioneers, visionaries, and industry masterminds that pushed the sport to where it is today.

bigquotesThis film represents over 30 years with a front row seat to the Freeride revolution. The partnership between Freeride Entertainment, Outside Studios, and Pinkbike has been paramount in bringing this modern day tale of risk vs reward to the mountain biking world and beyond.Derek Westerlund, Director

World Premiere at Crankworx on Friday, July 28th at the Whistler Olympic Plaza. Stay tuned.

 "Nothing's For Free"

Outside Online

I'll tee it up for the rest of the comment section.
  • 20 1
Is Outside Studios related to Outside Online? 'Nothing for Free' a subtle hint?
  • 66 5
@adriemel83: yes, Pinkbike and Outside Studios (the production arm of Outside) have been working with Freeride Entertainment on this for a couple of years now.

The project has been in the works for nearly a decade actually, Derek was talking about the idea back in 2013-14 when I was still at Rocky Mountain, and it's so cool for it to finally see the light of day.

The full film is pretty dark and follows some crazy storylines. It has some HEAVY riding in it as well.
  • 4 1
@adriemel83: Not subtle at all I would say
  • 9 1
@brianpark: Looking forward to it! Looks to be well worth paying for! Trailer looks heavy... only expect the full length to be nuts!
  • 9 5
Will this movie be free to watch is the real question
  • 14 3
I would pay to watch this film.
  • 10 9
 @brianpark:

hard to believe you'd have anything to do with freeride entertaintment after your holier-than-thou gnarwhal days
  • 5 1
 @brianpark: can"t wait for this
  • 9 9
 is this indeed so, "outside"?

where is my oxygen fee then? sunlight fee? gravity fee?

you think god pulls this stuff out of his ass?
  • 23 6
I am glad to pay for this kind of content.
I don't know where did people get the idea that everyhting must be free. People put not only money into projects and that adds up a lot.
Why the hate for charging for it? I don't recall anybody working for free and be cool with it. At some point you deserve some dough.
  • 10 1
Nothing is free…until 1 week after you pay to watch it.

@mr-fabio: i had thought only conspiracy forums had shills.

for the record, the sport lost most of it's public with the 29" wheels, that'll take at least a decade to fix. maybe that's why they're badgering for money now.
  • 4 0
@brianpark: So you're implying its the best MTB film ever created. That was the best trailer I've seen since Where The Trail Ends. I can't wait.
  • 2 0
 You beat me/everyone to it
  • 3 4
yeeeaaaaah - "Nothing's For Free" as you have to be a paid subscriber... haha - worst best name for a release ever...
  • 4 0
@skimtb1: Bwahaaahaaa! Next thing you know @brianpark is gonna play with myself and LeClerc!
  • 1 0
@MT36: at least funding for injurie bills with that cover...
  • 3 0
 @counterpoint:

I'm going to polish off my DVD of BITS3/CKD just to spite teenage @brianpark
  • 3 0
Is there going to be an option to just buy it and download it? Or is this just subscription bait?
  • 1 0
@brianpark: yeah for subtitles ! I hope the full movies will have them (not just the trailer). Deaf riders want to enjoy films!
  • 3 2
@mr-fabio: so, all those hundreds of bikers got their fee for uploading trails (gps tracks, photos, infos,..) to pinkbike database (Trailforks), rrright ?..
  • 6 0
@ka81: they got the trails hosted on a reliable website and app, which is far from free to create, host, and maintain.
  • 2 2
 @pmhobson: seriousely?.. )
So, people still uploading dozens of info for free and paying a subscription fee (not even just one-time payment)..
Also, people were uploading it for free long ago before subscription appeared...
Still nothing?!.. )
And please, no talks about the price of creating, hosting and maintaining.. Some here are very familiar with all the insider..
  • 5 0
@ka81: creating, hosting, and maintaining databases, apps, and websites aren’t one time costs. If it’s so easy to do for free, surely someone a well-meaning and community-minded as you would have done it already.
  • 2 0

 @amack5: Nothing's for free
  • 87 2
Everybody complaining about it not being free… yo I bought the VHS and DVD versions of these movies I don’t even want to hear it.
  • 18 0
right there with you, buying dvds from a Canadian website and having to wait for international shipping to watch them sucked but i wouldn't change it, I loved those films.
  • 59 1
Just outrageous that someone would make a full length historical documentary, interviewing just about every whose who across the sport, and not give it to me completely for free.
  • 10 0
Did you read the comments?! its either "Finally a full length movie- I'll pay for it" or "Why does everybody complain it's not free" ... strangely nearly no comments actually saying "I'll never watch this if I have to pay"
  • 4 0
@chrsei: there were like 5 total comments when they posted. And I think mine and one other were taking a shot at outside in general.
  • 3 0
@chrsei: I really just wanted a reason to display the fact I had purchased New World Disorder on VHS
  • 1 0
100% I used to wait months for these to arrive on Vorb/Torpedo7 or Burkes cycles websites, id pre order them and pay like 60 bucks after shipping and then check the mail box every day after school for months and months, id email the website every week asking where's The Tipping Point and I bet I wasn't the only annoying little grom doing that. If any one on here reading this worked at bike shops and sent DVDs to Groms thank you for your service!
  • 2 0
@everythingsucks: General sarcastic shots fired for sure.... stir the pot a little. I have spent a small fortune on 20 years worth of Standard Films, Absinthe Films, Sherpa Cinema, Mack Dawg, Robot Food, TGR, and Wildcats production. Not many bike flicks in the collection, days of youth... Prefer to see the bike videos on live premier nights. Waaaaay better use of hiring a babysitter these days. Beers, bikes and great shots

Can't we just get stoked on a rad Film? no undertones, no bullshit just a community on people who appreciate where they came from and where they can go. Doesn't anyone remember when there were 3-5 movies that dropped in a year and the whole MTB landscape to togher to see it. Let's revel that this could be that again! Put your i want more upvotes and likes aside and just be stoked!
  • 2 0
 I feel personally attacked.
  • 1 0
4-5 films dropping each year went away with youtube and content making by every rider independently
  • 2 2
 Shimano > Sram

My cousins dog walker told me Shimano sucks because of the wandering bite point but I sent her a strongly worded email refuting said claim.
  • 1 3
I don't enjoy edits or films or anything of that sort, it kind of defeats the purpose of going out and doing mountain biking in my opinion, if i am staying at home on the coach to watch a mountain bike movie, I much prefer to turn on the Switch and play some Tears of the Kingdom or MK8D.
  • 25 0
Oh yeah. No more shredits. Full films for the win.
  • 23 0
Looks like a great film. I don’t buy many but will probably pay for this when it comes out
  • 19 0
Yes! Good to see Freeride Entertainment making a bike video again. I love the nwd films.
  • 14 0
I will watch this, regardless if it's free or not. This is the type of content I am happy to pay for. Looking at the roster, someone took the time to speak to many of the right people and get the story right. It looks like this project is a labour of love, not some commercial pop-up movie.
  • 14 1
If this doesn't feature Drop In, which I'm pretty sure it doesn't, that's a crime. That show was litterally on tv throughout Canada in the early 2000s and showed so many people what mountain biking is. Stoked for it regardless
  • 4 0
drop in is what introduced me to freeride when I was supposed to be on a "revision day" in my final school year. it was all over the extreme channel here in the UK
  • 4 0
Speaking of Drop In, this is for the Super T fans out there. Really cool interview:

www.pinkbike.com/news/what-ever-happened-to-tyler-super-t-klassen-video.html
  • 3 0
@MT36: a whatever happened to (Insert drop in rider) would be cool, like Romaniuk has gone on to be a DJ and rides motos again I believe while kinrade runs a bike park.

Its mad to see how far they spread in some respects to the sport.
  • 2 0
@wonkle: There was a video on youtube of some guy riding with Dylan Tremblay a few years ago and Darren Butler is working with the new indoor bike park in Vancouver doing coaching if I remember correctly. Would like to know where Jared went cuz he was one of my favorites.
  • 8 0
@WestC0astWanderer: Dylan is on the island, collecting a ton of vintage MTBs. I think Jared became an oil tycoon! That’s what I heard and did zero follow up with, so it’s basically confirmed.

Would be great to catch up with all those guys.
  • 5 0
@brianpark: If I remember correctly the bus in out in Langley sitting in someone's yard with the logos and everything still on it. I'm pretty I saw it a few years ago for sale on craigslist or marketplace. Pinkbike should buy it and do PB Academy but with free riders out of it or something lol.
  • 1 1
Yeah the early freeriders already had their "Moment", Drop In would have provided a nice transition from those early guys to Cam and Claw
  • 2 0
Super T is literally featured in the film.
  • 1 0
@valleyryde: it's just about him winning Rampage. Would love more light put onto Drop In in general.
  • 2 0
One thing that I realized last time I watched Drop In is there's an episode I think it's season 3 where they go dirt jumping and get attacked by a swarm of bee's and one of the grom's at the dirt jumps is none other than Stevie Smith, he's there showing them the jumps, he'd have been 15.
  • 2 0
 @bikes-arent-real: correct. season 3 episode 4
  • 12 0
I was there when "freeride" was born. I was one of the first wave of riders that took biking to different place. I wouldn't even remotely close to the human I am today, with out that era in my life. It was very special time to be riding bikes in the woods with homies, hucking our meat off skinnies 25ft+ in the air..... Wouldn't change any of it for anything in the world.

calm down, you would say exactly same thing about any other subculture you could have been a part of Big Grin
  • 1 0
@valrock: I've been a part of cycling culture since the late 70's.... I've seen every subculture come and go three times already....
  • 9 0
I absolutely can not wait to watch this! I will gladly pay for this kind of content! I still can’t watch Gee’s wreck though. Right up there with the failed Train gap and Kyle’s rampage. Makes my stomach turn.
  • 8 0
that shot of gee ragdolling through rocks still turns my stomach upside down
  • 2 0
That was pretty horrific to see again.
  • 7 0
John Cowan invited me to Hell Track and that was a BIG push for me. So big Props to the Freeride Entertainment guys and John Cowan!
  • 5 0
Oh my god it is so sick.
I know all these guy who inspired so many people around the world. (included me when I started riding with a dirt jump MTB in the woods in 2005 2006 I don't know)
I will watch it obviously.
I feel freeride is not dead even if it is not shown as racing event.
But we have to remember it. It is how all begun: some guys just wanted to have fun and to send radical run on MTB.
Media show us pro rider in contest or race but what makes live a sport or an indsutry is the passion of the guys/girls riding their home spot just for fun as often as possible.
Keep riding!
  • 6 0
I admire the guys that push the limit. They are masters of practice and conquering internal fear. That's something I can respect.
  • 7 0
Stoked for this, looks sick. What a roster.
  • 3 1
The young lads confused as all hell as to the thought of having to ask their parents for money to buy a Mtb movie .
I bought all the NWD DVDs plus all the downhill vids at $50 each with my mowing money. This one looks worth a look! Also looking forward to DG2!
  • 5 0
CAN NOT WAIT FOR THIS!!! LOOKS SICK!
  • 5 0
Best trailer in a long long time...
  • 3 0
Still say Dropping in when about to hit full send! Stoked for this and Definitely one for the DVD collection of MTB films. FREERIDE FOR LIFE! Live To Ride.
  • 6 2
This looks like a good watch, but it's definitely not an untold story!

Some stories are worth telling twice. The moment is an awesome film though. I have probably watched it 4 times!
  • 3 0
Hah fair. I really enjoyed The Moment, but they’re very different films with very different stories and intentions.
  • 2 0
@DKlassen8: Snap, i have watched a few times as well. Its an awesome movie.
  • 3 0
The Moment seemed like it was mostly about the first generation of freeriders. This movie looks bigger in scope.
  • 4 0
"lifes to short not to go big" put a huuuge smile on my face
  • 2 0
holy sht! what an amazing trailer! I still can see almost invisible "trail" of New World Disorder in movies from Freeride int.
Can't wait to watch this one!
  • 4 0
this is the only film i will watch this year
  • 1 1
God damnit, the autoplay used to started muted for me, so I just rolled my eyes at all the comments bitching about it. I guess it was only time before it came for me.
Worse was when I tried to tell my ad blocks to get to work on the video, it just removed the video and controls, but left the sound. Why do these media companies think anyone believes their numbers of views that include autoplay?
  • 3 0
i would happily buy off vimeo or anything else. but im not overly keen to support a site that made pinkbike go to the dogs
  • 2 0
Apologies as I'm sure this is asked somewhere above. But Can I watch this movie for a reasonable one time purchase price or do I 100% need to subscribe to Outside+?
  • 4 0
 THIS... gave me shivers!
  • 3 0
Man, if only I had a name like Dik Cox. Movie looks sick too.

looks like it'll be a great movie. I'd have liked to see Grant Allen on that list.
  • 2 0
I need to burn this to a DVD and find an old fattie TV to appreciate this proper old school style.
  • 2 0
Full movie …just waiting for the ”Brage was robbed” comments after next year’s Oscars.
  • 2 0
I would rather pay to just buy the movie than be forced into an app subscription. Not cool
  • 4 1
 trailer is free
  • 1 0
The crashes in the trailer really made me wince, looks like a great film but I'm not sure i want to watch it!
  • 1 1
Maybe good to desensitize a little. Something gnarly might happen to you some day.

Jesus, that looks like one not to watch with the wife.
