New Casing, Compound, and Width Options From Maxxis - Interbike 2018

 Mostly with you (love Maxxis, buttload of options not clearly organized), but once you get the options sorted you can pretty much get exactly what you need (except a 2.4 DHR II DD apparently). I find it least confusing to start with casing first, figure out what casing you want and then w/in your wheel size you only have to debate the widths and compounds available. I feel like some kind of interactive chart would save some headaches.

 Agree x 100. Good luck trying to buy from a shop. If they don't have the one tire I want, I'm going to get it online. I go to one of the many online retailers, and they'll have all of the tires, but very little descriptors on the differences between versions.

 @gemma8788: Now you can get the 2.4 DHR II DD, at least in WT option. I´m running one at the moment.

 You have to spend a bit of time to understand the components of the tire and then it makes sense quickly (same with other brands who have their own terms). Tread pattern (model name), wheel size, tread width, casing, compound, tubeless ready or not. Each of these has an impact on ride quality so they need to be distinctly identified.

 The last Maxxis tire I bought I had to triple check what I was buying because it seemed too easy. I had this uneasy feeling like I was missing something like 'ohhh it's not WT' or 'ohhh it's Exo and not DD'. I swear buying these things is like trying to pack for a holiday.

 I can make sense of the different types of casings, compounds, sized etc. But what bugs me, is that not all widths are made with DD or sometimes 3C is only available with EXO in only one width and so on.
I want 29x2.4WT DHR II DD 3C MaxxTerra for my rear tire but that simply does not exist. The same with front I would like 29x2.5WT DHF EXO 3C MaxxGrip and guess what, it does not exist. I would also like them with tan walls, is that too much?

There are no wider( >2.3 ) 29" DHR II or DHF with DD.

 Great tyres, but maybe this is the reason they are so over priced.

 @TheUnknownMTBR: White orly appears on OEM versions of their tires. If you bought a bike that came with Maxxis tires, they'll have white lettering on them. If you buy them anywhere else they'll be yellow. I really couldn't tell you why this is but it just is.

 @TheUnknownMTBR: Its a theory known as brand recognition. When you see an ad where the riders are running Maxxis tires, you know it why? THE YELLOW. When you see a movie where the riders are running Maxxis tires you know it's Maxxis why? THE YELLOW. When Gwinn left Maxxis for Onza, the first year of him "riding Onza" he was actually riding blacked out Maxxis, how do we know this......THE YELLOW is nearly impossible to hide! They don't change it because it works, the brand is recognizable in ads, movies and on the trail by one simple thing....THE YELLOW. For those who spend their days agonizing on how the yellow just doesn't match and make you nice pretty bike look even prettier because that's all that matters I would recommend you go RIDE YOUR BIKE and get it dirty! Or ride your nice pretty all colors matching bike to a Marketing class to better understand the genius of the Yellow Maxxis label.
Didn't mean to be so aggressive but my god am I sick of people who probably litter their Tacoma's every free bike related sticker they can find lament on about how tragic it is that the Maxxis logo doesn't match their bike when its just simple marketing, that's it. If YOU owned the company you'd do the EXACT same thing to have the market awareness that the Yellow Maxxis patch brings.

I seriously doubt that anyone is obsessing about the yellow letters on their tire sidewall anywhere near as much as in your response. I’m certainly not. It’s just an observation between OEM vs AM. I think you get a lot more brand recognition by being a tire of choice that shows up on a lot of bikes. I doubt the average rider gives two toots about whether they see a yellow blur or not. Only some overly-obsessed marketing dufus would think that matters. Why don’t you ask Ralph Lauren how much their Polo shirt sales tanked when they went from a small 1/2” polo rider logo to a 3” tall logo on their shirts? There’s not so much brand recognition if people choose to not buy, and hence choose not to display your product in the market, for that very reason.

However the press releases and production schedules always start off with 27.5 and 29; be patient and the 26 versions appear; so it was with the Minion SS, which I picked up in 26 recently, and all of the Schwalbe Addix compounds.

Does wonders for the blood pressure it does, not reading press releases.

 @orientdave: yes indeed. Just picked up some 2.4 Ardent Exo's in 26" for some lower rolling resistance on two of our bikes. As usual they inflate tubeless as if there's a tube inside. Love Maxxis!

 Maxxis and Schwalbe are two companies that continue to offer 26" tires, even some of the new ones. Might surprise you that not all of the new tires are 29 and 27.5; some are only available in one size.

 They have a different damping feel, closer to dh casing. The only exo tire I feel like a dh/Dd is the minion 2.5 Wt maxgripp..

 EXO with CushCore is the best solution. Saves your tires, AND your rims.

 DD seems to be a rougher ride for me when running a aggressor DD, the sidewall is still pristine compared to the normal EXO DHF but damn is it rough and HEAVY! only sucks going uphill with the weight, otherwise i really dont notice it.

 I weight 139lbs WITH full gear/water... DD is way too rough for me.

 @derkenblosh: yeah fair enough mate. Can understand that. I’m the other end at 225lb so horses for courses. I’ve always had a hard time with tyres. I run 28/34 psi too!

 I think the damping of the DD is still much closer to that of the exo tyres. The DH casings are super damped and that’s why I ride em. I’m surprised it never seems to get mentioned, I’m also stunned when I see total shredders on exo casings (see 50:01 crew) cus for me the DH casings just blows all the others away for the ride characteristic. I’m happy to get used to the extra weight for the awesome feeling they provide. To get an exo or DD to provide even near the kind of support the DH casing does you’ve got to be over 30psi and that obviously has a negative impact on everything else.

 @iqbal-achieve: the only thing that could make a Cont Der Baron right was the coil fork... these are rough bouncy tires.. takes a while to get used to it.. the grip in muddy slippery stuff is from other world though

 Yep. Trail riders get love with maxxgrip options, but DH don't get hard compounds. Only option I know is MM bike park... others wear very fast, and after one week a soft compound isn't any better than a hard MM BP.

 Maxxis and Bontrager rule. Big time. And then just put procore inside. One thing though. Can you please redesign the center knobs on Minion SS. Of all Enduro Semi Slicks, they are the worst. Just get the center of this rekon race and put it in there.

 @WasatchEnduro: ahh didn't know that. Been running it for a while now in 27.5 and I like it better than the 2.3 version in the off camber stuff. GRID casing doesn't seem quite as rugged compared to older tires.

yeah those noobs just lightened up the grid casing for some dumbass reason. the 2.3 is just too narrow on i30ish rims and now it's too damn flimsy. their 2.6s seem to be very 2.5esque, which i'm okay with, just need a slightly larger slaughter in two nyne now... and why not offer it with the new 'black diamond' casing too. there may not be a huge audience for that but hey, i'll buy two right off the bat if the big S needs some f'n seed money.

 @WasatchEnduro: yup, mine are at 2.5 (just under 64mm) on the same i30 sized rim. The other issue is they are a tall tire, a full 2.6in so it can cause clearance issues (they fit my trail bike but not my DH because of height).

I was pretty happy with a 29x2.3 DD aggressor as a rear. It's a stout tire for sure, strong but the low(ish) volume doesn't offer quite the grip and damping as the Martello 2.35 TNT that i'm running now, matched to a Goma 2.4 TNT front. The Martello is about 960g tho so it'll likely offer less puncture resistance but i'm digging it and the 950-1050 weight range for 29er tires tends to work for me for durability/support without being overly built and heavy. (for western mtn riding)

 The EXO+ Rekon is surprisingly burly. I’ve actually cut the outer casing on a rock and it exposed the silk shield layer, but the tire held together and held air for many months until the tread was dead. That same wound would have probably killed the 60tpi.

 @loganskis: which Aggressor? 2.5 wt or 2.3? Iirc they are quite different

 @Svinyard: the tread pattern should be the same, between the 2.5wt and 2.3... spaced a little differently for wider rims on the wt, but more or less the same

 @Svinyard: aggressor, assegai or griffin all have 'paddle' like centre tread alignment with transitional knobs for more balanced cornering. I've just swapped from aggressor to griffin and its a 300% improvement, obviously haven't tried assegai yet

 +1 for the Tomahawk DD as a good summertime option for the back. Rolls fast and has good corner bite

 Not sure it can be said the tyre has 'failed', but breaking the tread design down, for fast rolling you generally have a continuous centre block/s, Assegai has alternating dhf centre blocks either side of centre, alternating with a square block in the centre. It then has enlarged Aggressor side knobs which definitely don't hook up as well as Minion knobs, the alternating transitional knob will also give the tyre less grip for aggressive cornering.... All in all it look like it will roll slower and be more likely to wash out in corners than a Minion... still keen to at least try it though.

 @ctd07: haven’t ridden assegai but it seems that it’s main characteristic should be earlier yet more predictable break away. Minion breaks away predictably up to middle speeds. If you go fast enough on hard dry surface it will stop talking to you, at some point it will just let go. Especially the DHR2. Not sure, but this is what it looks like to me. At the same time there’s no way I would run assegai over dhf

 The DH Assegai worked great for me. A step above the DHF in grip, like a Magic Mary, but wore very well.

 dh casing its the best option if you ride rough terrain, ruts, rocks aggressively, you wont have any problems going tubless, no flats or punctures guaranty

 It seems they have changed the website. It's a common maxxis tyre. I've got two in the garage and a know heaps of people who also have them.

 @Krzymndyd: sorry, that was the Trail spec version, so my bad. The DH spec are wire bead in 27.5 x 2.5 size on both the USA and Int’l websites, but 26/29 x 2.5 list foldable bead choices. Weird ...
