Fox Racing Enters Footwear Market With 3 New Shoes

Fox Racing has entered the footwear market, completing their apparel catalog to cover riders from head to toe. The trio of shoes includes two clipless offerings and one pair of flat pedal shoes, all of which fall into the Union model tree. Fox built the Union shoe over two and half years, pulling feedback from the Santa Cruz Syndicate, but states that they are functional for all disciplines of riding.

All three shoe models come in four color choices with minimal branding. There's a plain black and three, two-tone options; grey, mocha, and bolder, blood red color. The sizing runs from 37-47 EU with half sizes available in 41-46.

Pricing starts at $149.95 USD for the Union Flat shoe with a basic lace closure, although extra detail was given to the heel and toe lug spacing for added grip while hiking. Underneath both the flat and clipless shoes, Ultratac rubber is formed into a grid of hexagonal lugs, while the upper construction is one piece and features a molded, reinforced toe cap for protection.

The standard Union clipless version costs $179.95 but sees a velcro strap added to the top of the tongue. The spiffy Union BOA shoes use two separate BOA Li2 dials across three eyelets per side to tweak the tension appropriately. Those speedy laces ramp up the price to $249.95, though. A lightweight nylon shank runs through the sole of both clipless Union models and looks to have more than enough range to position the cleats for power or control. Each clipless version includes two different height arch supports to customize the shape and fit.

 The market lacks a good flat pedal shoe with boa/speed closure AND a sufficiently grippy rubber sole. If fox can pull it off where others fail (pearl izumi, Crank Bros, etc) they'll be the only one in town. Because FSCK laces!

 Preach. I love everything about my Pearl x-alp launches except the dang grip. Still break them out for the pedal heavy local riding, but man would I kill for a pair better suited for gravity.

 If whoever they're sourcing the rubber sole from doesn't care enough to even put their brand on it, then I doubt it'll be any better than the other lackluster options available. A quick google search says "Ultratac" rubber is also used on some random no-name hikers and what not. I'm guessing another sole that is optimized for longer wear rather than grip.

 Try the new Giro tracker shoe, I recently bought a pair and have been super impressed by their comfort. The rubber isn’t quite like fivetens or 2FO’s but I’ve found it to be more than adequate.

 @adrennan: Huh the soles are pretty stiff but I find the insole/uppers comfortable and breathable. I do get pressure on the top of my foot if I’m not careful about positioning the tongue when I tighten the BOA though. I could see that being worse on a high top.

 Umm, the dual Boa is clipless ... and the flat shoe lacks a nylon shank, so yeah. FYI, the Pearl Izumi Launch mid flat pedal is awesome, been riding them exclusively for three years and love them!

 Agreed. I say this for every shoe article when they inevitable don't come out with a flat boa shoe. I have tried the Pearl Izumi and the grip (even with Goodyear rubber) just isn't there. There is no reason a clipless rider needs BOA over a flat pedal rider.

 @bonkmasterflex: You're never going to break a BOA (I've had them on snowboard boots and they're reliable for years, alot more force going into those) and if you do BOA has a lifetime warranty. Also laces come un-tied every couple of hours, barring tying a knot you can't get undone.

 @bonkmasterflex: Yeah man, I don't get it. If ya break a boa, your 200 dollar shoes are trash. If ya break a lace, they're under 5 bucks at your local market. Plus, if it's an issue with them not staying tied, just do what I do. Lace em to where they end up on the inside at the top, chop em, knot em on the ends and make em slip ons. I hate tied shoes. I only tie boots. ALL of my other shoes are laced so I can slip them on and off.

 @fabwizard: Yeah, I get that. But they're talking about the flat pedal models being laces only. I agree that not having your shoes fitting properly on clipless pedals would be pointless. Flat pedals though? Doesn't really matter, as long as they're not falling off your feet.

 @mchenrya: I broke one smashing/scraping against a rock on a tough climb. But it would be hard to break one by just tightening it etc .took about 2-3 days for the free replacement kit they offer to come in and brand new again. I just tied the broken piece to the other lace and it tightened back up. Super easy

 Just got my 2nd pair or RC Boa's, great flat shoe. Little clunky at first. But they break in really nice and are super grippy. I did have an issue of back of the heel folding in due to the boa opening being a bit tight. Shoe horn would help.

Not only repairable but you can tighten laces up in different zones according to your foot sizing. For example I have high volume but narrow feet, so I need it real snug around the forefoot, but looser up by the ankles. Only laces can achieve such subtle nuances.

 @Trek9er: I don't think you needed to reply to three different comments with the same story. Anyhow I had a BOA fail when the mounting post sewn into the shoe broke. Not repairable, obviously.

BOAs are great in concept but I wish more manufacturers placed them on the tongue where they're protected.

 I put some elasticated laces in my Freerider's. They've been great, no more doing up laces or spinning dials, just slip 'em on and shred (or mince in my case).

 @mchenrya: they do break and they only warranty if the mechanism is what fails. My pair of six month old 5 10 s with the BOA are useless now because I could a rock in a narrow spot and it ripped the BOA most of the way off the shoe. I love the BOA bit for that instance I'm out a pair of perfectly good shoes.

 I prefer laces. Easy to tighten, replace/repair and customize. I can't quite see how the minor advantages of BOA over laces would be worth the mighty surcharge.

 If they are built to the same standards as their gloves they should last about 4 rides.

 @Rlvinas Ha!!! 100% truth there! Fox gloves seem to always split in the seams. Whether it's a $30 pair, or a $70 pair. They all seem to suffer the same fate.

 had Dakine last me two month ( warranty replacement got me sweet Dakine frame bag cuz I am not buying gloves from them anymore). FOX pair is still alive after 5 years of MTB, DH and bike commute ( the only pair I have). It might need a replacement next year but for now not bad for 40 CAD it cost me

 I've got a hoody from them from 2003 or so and I wear it about once a week on average (less in summer, more in winter). There are definite signs of wear, the hem of the sleeves is wearing away but otherwise it is still perfectly fine. I think that's acceptable. I've got decent experience with Fox Dirtpaws too actually. Just the last set I had from them had such a thick continuous patch of plastic over the outside that it was uncomfortably pushing on my knuckles if I'd make a fist (or grip my bars). I cut some grooves in the plastic to give it more room but it never got really comfortable. But yeah, I don't think everything is bad. As a flat pedal rider though, the article seems a bit limited for me to get any clue about why I'd want these. All I know now is that they spent two and a half year developing these shoes. Which sure must be an incredible feat. But not impressive enough for me to let them take my wallet. Even the statement that they've been developed with the Santa Cruz Syndicate... Now that Nathan Rennie has left the team, do they still have anyone on board to help them with the flat pedal version? I honestly don't know what the current team is riding though of course everyone does spend time on flat pedals even if they clip in for racing. Makes for a tough selling point against your main competitor though who supports a certain Sam Hill who does successfully use their flat pedal shoes in competition.

 I don’t get why the flats can’t even get a lace guard. I get when companies try to make the flat pedal shoes looks like vans/skate shoes and don’t add one, but these still look techy (ugly) in the flat pedal option, so why not at least put a lace guard or boa on them.

 Ride concepts has 2 flat pedal models with a strap. The TNT and the Wildcat. Decent shoes and great grip but the TNTs didn't make it through one season for me.

 @sanchofula: I have tried RC and their sticky soles are properly sticky, used 5.10 before and could not really tell the difference. RC are good shoes, they have 3 types of rubber though, so you need to be careful.

 @ctownrdr: it's amazing how often those shoes come up on a flat petal shoe thread, and there's still nothing like it. It's almost like manufacturers don't listen to their customers. Or we're wasting our time ranting at each other here... I save mine for when the conditions are right (wrong?) so they don't wear out, and they're such a great shoe to wear. Once they're wet, I do wonder if someone's snuck some depleted uranium in there, they get so heavy

 I have the Crank Brothers Mallet E and love it, however I’m in the market for a flat shoe and Crank Brothers always seems to add some sort of polarizing colour on their shoes somewhere. Red lace loops. White inside patch. I just want a nice, solid colour and these new FOX shoes look perfect to me.

 I wish someone would make a proper insulated flat pedal with a gaiter for winter riding. Like the five ten trailcross gortex but with also insulated. Oh well, I can only dream.

 Leatt are OK, the grip is pretty good, and the waterproofing is great. My only gripe is the logo is peeling off after two seasons. And the top holes on the toe box now have a small tear,

 The power - control gimmick seems like total BS. Everyone has known for a long time now that placing the cleat as far back over the pedal axle as is possible allows the greatest and most consistent transmission of power. (Like a piston. On a piston one does not offset the shaft.) Going a little forward can provide "snap" but is less sustainable and leads to fatigue. Going all the way forward just increases fatigue. Your calf muscle just doesn't do much for pedaling. The farther forward in front of the axle the more energy one needs to stabilize the foot to make power.

 I've been testing the Union and Union Boa for nearly a year and can confirm they are the best shoes I have tried to date (vs fiveten, Giro, Specialized 2fo etc). Comfort, feel, weight, and surprisingly durable. Worth the investment in my opinion.

 @Lauri728: To each their own. Different riders value different traits. If it's feel for the bike, lightweight, and quick break-in, you can't beat em. If I was a rider that needed something stiff or has a previous injury then they certainly aren't the best option. 3 pairs have held up great once they dialled in the sole compound after Gen1.

 Have you tried shimano shoes? I have a e/ee fit depending on brand and fit a shimano shoe pretty comfortably.

Currently riding on Shimano I think GR7 which are great and really like there fit, but I'm also lazy and want a set of flat pedal shoe with Boa too.

 I ride either Lake wides or Shimano wides. Not much love for those of us that have bozo feet.

 I have wide feet and have tried EVERY flat pedal shoe on the market with exception of the Lake MX-1. The only ones with any toe room are the Shimano GR5 with the insole removed. The GR7 that was mentioned is more narrow in the toe box.
