New Trail: GoPro Double Down at Canyons

Aug 24, 2014
by Justin Olsen
GoPro Double Down is the latest (and largest) addition to the Bike Park at Canyons Resort. It was designed to feel like a trail that you typically wouldn't see in a lift serviced bike park. As the name implies it is filled with mandatory airs and doubles, that just get bigger and bigger all the way down. This trail is the brainchild of Bike Park Manager Steve Duke, and Events Manager Darren Muehlhaus, and was directly inspired by some of the legendary trail networks in the Pacific Northwest such as Black Rock and Post Canyon. In order to raise additional funds for the trail, Steve and Darren reached out to GoPro with the idea of sponsoring a signature trail, and they were quick to come on board. Construction started in June, and the trail officially opened last weekend. Props to the trail crew at Canyons for making such a huge push to get the trail done this year! It is a much anticipated addition to the bike park, and the Utah gravity scene overall; and will definitely be a benchmark for Canyons Bike Park for years to come!

NOTICE- Mandatory Air Required. Canyons Resort is pushing the limit of what a bike park trail consists of with it s latest addition Go Pro Double Down. As the name states it is chock full of double gaps as well as massive berms and a few big drops. It is a welcome addition to the bike park and the Park City Gravity scene overall. Props to Go Pro and Canyons Bike Park for partnering up and making this trail happen.

This is the first mandatory air on Go Pro Double Down. It can be a bit intimidating at first but the set up drop and distance is perfect for the speed of the trail. Cody Kelley makes it look easy.

Once you drop you can t stop. The mega train approaches the biggest mandatory step down on the trail.
Full speed ahead for the mega train... Once you drop you can't stop.

The middle of the trail is a massive berm garden littered with mini doubles. If you like fast and flowy trail it doesn t disappoint. Alex Andrews and Jeremy Jones all smiles all day.

Berm to berm to berm to berm. This section of trail keeps you more horizontal than vertical for sure.

More berms.

This is the only drop on the trail with a safety bridge. Eric Porter plays it extra safe by taking his hands of the bars.

This step up is easily one of the best features on Go Pro Double Down. Cody Kelley sends it with style.

Local snowboard legend Jeremy Jones recently bought a bike and has been up ripping the bike park with his crew almost daily. He casually throws a no foot can over the big step up.

If you don t know who Lizard King is you should google him. This dude is one of the most influential professional skateboarders in the game and a Salt Lake City local. Lizard bought a bike this summer and has been shredding like a mad man So stoked to see this guy riding and he is fired up to be in the dirt Don t be surprised if you see him in line at your local bike park next summer.

Being on the grind to film skateboarding and snowboarding is one thing but hiking your bike UP a trail in a bike park is another thing all together. Pro skateboard Lizard King and Pro snowboarder Jeremy Jones are that hyped on shredding this trail. Riding the chairlift takes way to long.

Another drop? Yes please. Local shredder Derek Thomson likes getting dirty too...

Fun flow section leading into the boxed in double.

Don t case this one.. Fully boxed in with timber this jump is not one you would typically find in a bike park. It is perfect at trail speed though and is one of the best jumps on the trail... as long as you are fully committed. Jess Pederson is fully committed.

The dirt in Utah can get pretty dry and dusty at times but this entire trail is build on a north facing slope which really helps it stay prime. Bryce Helbling hits the set up jump leading into one of the bigger mandatory doubles.

The lower section of Go Pro Double Down is filled with dirt jumps style doubles and north shore style drops. Rob McClain is okay with that.

I would have thought go pro would have had an event to kick off the opening of the trail too. But nothing was done other than a few social media posts by the canyons. I know the trail opened a bit later than expected and Kelly McGarry was seen around the canyons a bunch before crank works. Maybe the plan was for him to do a course preview and it just didn't work out. Still very surprising the lack of hype up for such a banger trail.

So sick! It's awesome to see what Canyons has done (and come from) in the last year, let along the last four... Killer job all around by Duke, Crazy Kugel and the crew. Can't wait to ride this thing!

A massive upgrade from the first couple of years. My hopes are now much higher for the techy DH trail they're supposed to build now that this is done. The video makes this trail look like effortless, no worries at all about the speed.

You can definitely see the black Rock influence in this trail. Reminds me exactly of Granny's kitchen mixed with brake check. Looks so fun! (except that first wooden step down, that looks a little scary haha!)

Trail is a blast, hoping it's just the middle section of it though. Would be sweet to see it start higher, and take it all the way to base . But that's just human nature, always wanting more...

It is sad to see such beautiful trails being built, yet still missing some of the main steps to building a sustainable trail. Those logs will all need to be pulled out in 5 years, but if they had only taken off the bark they would have lasted more than 10 years without a problem. Before building a trail looking at the standards of NSMBA, IMBA, or EMBA could not only save you time building in the long run, but also help to make less of an impact on the beautiful forests we call our home.

We rode this trail today it was pretty intimidating. The access to the lift kind of sucked you have to ride a xc trail to get to the bottom. But it is a great run.

Ugh, pedaling on a mtb? What kinda satanic monsters designed a trail you have to pedal on? Wink
  • 1 0
 Haha. I know right.

The run out is definitely horrible. All three trails have the same ending merger which requires a bit of walking (I don't pedal a DH bike), but the run itself is awesome. These photos make all the features look bigger than they really are.

 The douche Jeremy Jones.
  • 2 0
I just met THIS Jeremy Jones at a DH race that we both competed in a few weeks back...not a douchy bone in his body. Excellent guy...obviously an excellent athlete as well.
  • 2 4
Oh yeah I'm sure he's fine on a mtb but go ahead and run into him if you have skis on and enjoy as the douchyness flows through his body.

Is not the first time i heard that Jeremy Jones is the Brian Lopes of snowboarding
