NZ Cardrona Mega Avalanche 2018 – Video

Around 100 riders set off in a mass start at 3.10pm from the top of Cardrona and muscled their way around, past and through each other in a quest for top honours in this year's Cardrona Mega Avalanche. It was a hot day with dry conditions so the beers at the finish line were gratefully received...


The mass-start race took off with 3 divisions - the "Hares" raced for cash prizes, the "Turtles" collected gold nuggets on their way down to swap for prizes and the Juniors were under 16yrs on the day. The Juniors started a minute after the adult Turtles and had to muscle their way through the mob – the first 4 Junior boys finished about a third of the way through the adults!



The women's division was won by Melissa "Mops" Newell, with Hannah O'Connell and Danielle Lane rounding out the ladies' podium.

The men's division was the fastest we've seen on the Cardrona Peak to Pub trail – all 6 of the fastest men made it across the finish line, down 1400m of vertical decent along 10km of course in under 15mins. In the end, 3-time Mega champion Conor Macfarlane took the top spot, with Reece Potter in 2nd and Pete Robinson in 3rd.

All in all, it was another successful Mega at Cardrona – we can't wait for next year!
