New Zealand Health Minister Criticized for Mountain Biking During Lockdown

David Clark, New Zealand's Health Minister, has been criticized for going for a mountain bike ride while the country is in lockdown. Clark had to apologise to Jacinda Ardern, the Prime Minister, after he was photographed at a riding location 2km from his house.

New Zealand is currently in a level-4 lockdown to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and citizens have been told that they may only exercise "locally and safely". On Thursday, a member of the public spotted Clark's van, which has his face and name on the side of it, at a car park next to the Signal Hill trails. They took a photograph and passed it onto local media.

Clark confirmed in a statement he had gone mountain biking and that it was an action he regrets. He said: "This was my only chance to get out for some exercise in daylight hours ... The track itself is not challenging, and is widely used by families and foot traffic. I know that now is not the time for people to be engaging in higher-risk exercise activities. I don’t want to give anyone the perception that I take these matters lightly. This is a reminder to me to think carefully about how best to fit some exercise into my new-normal routine."

Clark has apologised to Jacinda Ardern, who said in a statement: "It’s my expectation that ministers set the standards we are asking New Zealanders to follow. People can go outside to get fresh air and drive short distances if needed, but we have asked people to avoid activities where there is a higher risk of injury, and the minister should have followed that guidance.”

While Clark is facing calls from the media that he should be fired , no further action is expected to be taken.

Yup, that is the worst, or if you're from Germany, the wurst.

Such a bs addition. I don't need to answer all your 82 polls, just so you can sell the findings. And from now on, I won't answer a single poll anymore because of that bs

I've just had my account suspended for spamming, because I posted a comment on one of the polls, then copied and pasted it on others. Thankfully, creating a new email address is child's play.
In the meantime PB allows comments like the one below without any penalty.

"And it's some fit of delusion for some reason every orthopedic surgeon I work with had to cancel surgeries despite the fact there are five patients with this supposed flu in the entire County. We are now firing , staff sending employees home and putting them all on unemployment. Genius. I really hope a ton of people die from this to Simply make it worth it that would absolutely make the Democrats and socialists happy."

Well done PB, you should be proud.

Tried adding it to the filters on an adblocker, and it just added a rule for the class of the item which also removes the dashboard if you have unread elements on your dashboard... So don't do that if you care about the dashboard.

Remember when certain sites cost $ to enter, now it's free but you have to watch a few adds or do the polls so they can sell that information to companies and advertisers. Polls tab is here to stay, like those ugly links below every article.

@dkendy1: Yeah fair enough, he pretty much signed his own death warrant really taking ‘That’ van...personally I’d have ridden to the trail. Getting the bloke sacked or whatever they are pushing for is way too far though, as explained by the government 1 form of exercise per day is permitted.

I’ve been out this past week on my bike but only on the road as the local woods are now closed for lockdown as dog walkers etc were grouping together f*cking it up for the rest of us! So now I can’t hit my local trails for a ride, but tbh I felt that there were too many people out and about so I’m now fully locked down at home, and stuck pottering about annoying the wife and my 4yr old son at home.

Props to him. But since MTB is a growing community the number of morons, although small, is growing as well thus we can observe fantastically bizarre responses on forums. One twat on Swedish forum called for increasing hygiene and cease snot rocketing around the trail since according to this theory trail is effectively a tunnel filled with bacteria and viruses. To make it even more ridiculous it is windy as fuk here! If only it was about survival of the strong and demise of the weak... huge portion of Western population would die. If only writing weakling comments would kill people...

I'm impressed that someone in this position actually mountain bikes, enough to miss it when they're not allowed to. Though it is a bit stupid to go out in your face-branded van to ride your local spot. As Jacinda says he should lead by example.

@WAKIdesigns: have you seen Eastern EU/ Russian cartons and animations for kids? Had a great chat with a friend today and he noted they seem to promote strong/weak narratives vs the typical Western good/evil shit. Remember lots of 'em, many were brootal.
  • 8 5
@dirtyburger: sure! I grew up on them in Poland! But I would say they had lots of Ben and Jerry/ Looney Toons style of thing rather than SH Ninja Turtles. An interesting observation though.

I don’t want to get too deep into this but it was fascinating for me to watch the rise of Jordan Peterson Lectures and how varied was the reaction to him by educated people in the West. Can’t speak for the big part of educated people in Europe but at least for me and many people of my age it can be described as: ndaaaa?! Off course marxists caused awful lots of suffering and death, and it is hard to call them any better than nazis, and overblown ideas of equality, particularly equality of outcome are a bullshit leading to mass genocide. Off course new marxists in the West, students in particular are thinking they are in for a right cause. Can you imagine Stalin did all that without thinking he is doing the right thing? Off course he thought well of himself!

So... yeah, let’s be careful which stories are we feeding our brains with. Currently West went into the state of Russia/ Eastwrn block from 1980s. In a way that Yeah things are getting better but no matter what we do, no politicoan can be trusted they are all lying anyways, there’s no point to fight for anything. And now we have the culyberspace we can emigrate to.

Please watch Adam Curtis documentaries. With a pinch of salt but still, amazing food for thought. Hypernotmalization Is his latest but it’s good to first watch The century of self and Bitter lake

@WAKIdesigns: "lots of Ben and Jerry/ Loony Toons style..." I think you mean Tom and Jerry, the animated Cat and Mouse. Ben and Jerry are hippie ice cream makers from Vermont- very real, thank god. Freudian slip, perhaps?
  • 38 0
@DirtyDee: I know he made the politically correct apology here, but was this really so bad? It was only 2 km away, he appears to have driven by himself and the trails aren't challenging, and if you're not trying to go mach5, is it really much different than going for a jog? Again, how bad of an example was this?
  • 17 5
@dcaf: yes... very freudian. Ben and Jerry contributed to deaths of many people but we can't say anything cuz it's fat shaming. Then Tom and Jerry would be too harsh for people these days. A cat trying to kill a mouse and it's all for laughs. People who have issues with expression "Chinese Flu" would never be able to cope with that.
  • 4 0
@WAKIdesigns: I was triggered enough to eat a pint of Ben and Jerrys.
  • 3 0
@trillot: I don't think what he did was so bad, just that there is a lot of grey area in what people feel that can/can't do or should/shouldn't do during this crisis. A minister being seen doing this basically opens the floodgates for everyone to think it's ok and then the rules gets more slack etc. I personally can't ride atm for other reasons but would do a local solo ride on simple trails if I could, I wouldn't be broadcasting it though and certainly not if in a position of influence or power. Very silly to drive to local trails though, which he could easily ride to, in his branded van.
  • 22 0
 @trillot:

To me, the faux pas was driving 2 km to ride. NZ is for the first time ever experiencing roads safe enough to ride on!
  • 7 0
@trillot: My thoughts exactly...you can be a jogger and break an ankle too so I guess running is not allowed either? If you're riding safely and on uncrowded trails I don't see how this is an issue in any way other than "perceived" optics.

@DirtyDee: Yep. he did exactly what i would do, if the 'rule' was in fact just "recreate locally and safely". But I am not a minister in a gov't fighting a PR battle to change behaviour in society. Nor is my picture on my truck. He is held to a higher standard as a public figure and should be sacked. I get to go ride - while physically distancing.

Just jumping in here because I am listening to Erblicket die tochter des firmaments at this very moment, but I doubt Varg’s (very interesting and sadly banned from youtube) ‘perspective’) would hold much sway over a freethinker like Waki. I think TP is still available on the sketchy Bitchute site.I love the first 3 songs off Filosefem and still play often. One-man, super-primitive BM at its zenith made by a killer & churchburner.  2 kilometres from his house. Should have just ridden to the trails. But never the less, a little biking within your comfort zone should not be a problem really.
  • 55 3
I wonder what is officially considered a risky activity over there.

Cutting your own vegetables (you could get hurt if you're clumsy enough to chop your toe off)
Drive that car (loads of people get hurt/killed in car related accidents annually)
Eat something that is not super healthy (especially if moderate activity is considered dangerous)
Yoga (what if you end up in a pose you can't get out of, no one is there to help you and you nearly starve)
Get on social media (which could massively affect your self esteem and lead to failed suicide attempts).

Please health minister, drag your bed and teddybear into your bomb shelter and stay there. Everything else is risky.
  • 25 0
Technically, it was probably riskier to ride to the trails on the road than drive... So this probably was the prudent way to get out for a ride. But, maybe should have taken his spouse's car.

@excavator666: Deserves way more up votes in my opinion. I wonder who took the photo and how far away from his actual house he/her was?
  • 8 0
The issue wasn't the fact he was mountain biking (local exercise has been encouraged) it was because he defied the direction of the government of only essential vehicles to be on the roads at the moment. You are able to ride/walk/run near your house but the directive is not to drive anywhere to prevent groups congregating in carparks, at beaches etc.
  • 2 0
@thebradjohns: Alright, fair enough. I was misled by the PB article claiming it was the mountainbiking that was the issue, but in fact it was him driving his car on the road when he didn't really have to. With all these nice colorful tags PB has nowadays, I think it would be helpful if they'd add the "fake news" tag to it. Takes away the confusion.
  • 4 0
@vinay: no I think it was the mtb he was getting shamed for. Even mentioned that short local drives are OK. He's getting shamed for "risky" activity. The whole thing is bs. People are cooped up and want to throw anyone they can under the bus. I think some exercise is vital for mental well-being.

Yes, it does. The idea is not only to not spread the virus but not to do anything that might increase the chance of ending up in a hospital, in order to not block any hospital beds that might be needed for COVID patients at some point.

@slothez: Yes that junk is the theory, the reality is we have surgeries being cancelled and empty hospitals. Or you get propaganda like in New York where they’re apparently overwhelmed and are loading bodies onto truck trailers, the reality there is anyone who dies from anything is suspected to have COVID-19 so they’re all loaded on a truck. They found 400 ventilators that they desperately requested sitting in storage.

The whole situation is a perfect storm of media sensationalism, junk data on the virus, and a social justice obsessed public who are incapable or critical thinking. When people face uncertainty and are fearful they gravitate to the mainstream narrative like a religion.

@slothez exactly, it’s not difficult to understand stay at home. Only leave your house for food, medical reasons or to exercise. Assume you have covid 19 and act like it and don’t take any unnecessary risks and this definitely includes mountain biking of any description.

@thenotoriousmic: 17,000 people die from influenza in the UK every year. Anyone who is currently dying WITH COVID-19 is being categorized as dying FROM COVID-19. Do you see the significance of that? “It’s only just starting here” How do you know if you’re not testing? Half the population could have it. You need to step away from the insane, sensationalized, UK media for a while.

Yes the economy has ground to a halt and many are loosing the jobs and businesses unnecessarily. Your point is?
  • 25 3
@jclnv: Our hard right conservative capitalist government hasn’t scuttled the economy and become overnight socialists just for a laugh mate. They were originally going to let it rip through the population in order to save the economy, it’s only when the realised how high the death toll would be they actually did something. Now they’re paying everyone to stay home and building mile long make shift hospitals. I know your smarter than the international medical community but why don’t you just give them the benefit of doubt on this one occasion and do as your told?
  • 31 0
@jclnv: Hello, I'm a doctor in the Seattle area who just recovered from COVID-19 myself. I see you are on Vancouver Island. Our hospital ICU is currently full of COVID-19 patients on ventilators, some under 40 years old. I understand that someone not seeing this in person could have a different view of the situation. I also understand it's hard to believe what you hear in the media these days (which is a whole other discussion). I admit that I didn't think this would be such a big deal when the initial data from Asia came out and I suspected the media was overhyping this. We all said, "it'll just be like a bad flu season" and made jokes about the zombie apocalypse. But seeing is believing, and we are all singing a different tune now. This is real and serious.
  • 13 14
@thenotoriousmic: What are you showing me? An empty wear house that's being converted to accept hypothetical sufferers of COVID-19 based on models that are based on false data.

The WHO has no empirical data to base those predictions. Iceland has done by far the most testing per capita and they have shown that 50% of cases are asymptomatic. Who is vulnerable to the disease? The elderly and those with pre-existing conditions that can be compromised. So here’s what you do, you isolate those people. Currently the elderly etc are having to venture out into the population and face exposure while the majority of the population who would barely show any symptoms are crashing the economy due to quarantining. It’s absolutely pointless as many of the worlds leading epidemiologists are now saying.

m.youtube.com/watch?v=QUvWaxuurzQ

@jclnv False data according to you, a complete idiot who won’t listen to a doctor who’s just told you that the ICU’s a full with covid patients just over the boarder? Which is the exact same reason we’re building massive temporary hospitals all around the country. Just do as you’re told and leave the thinking for others.

@jclnv: That was a good video, thanks for posting it. I agree with everything he is saying. He does agree with current lockdown strategies, but warns that we have limited data at this point and have to be ready to adjust our approach as our understanding evolves. He warns against influence by other biases including political agendas, media, etc. I can assure you that the professional medical community are exactly on this page. We base what we do on the data at hand and it is often incomplete. But yes, minimizing health risk is our #1 objective. Sometimes this can be heavy-handed and in retrospect seen as over-reaching. Your concerns about the impact on economy and the society at large if this goes on much longer are real and I'm personally very worried too. It should be part of the discussion.
  • 7 0
@jclnv: I should add that the reasons he gives for the worse outcomes in Italy are not specific to Italy. We have a similar situation here in the U.S in terms of underlying co-morbidities and the limited capacity of our ICU's. My hospital is not doing what they reportedly did in Italy and admit patients with mild symptoms. We are only admitting those with severe symptoms. Others are being told to go home and quarantine themselves. Yet our ICU is already full and our projected peak of COVID cases is not for a couple more weeks. We actually had a COVID patient die due to respiratory failure sitting in our ER waiting room the other day, so maybe we are not admitting enough.

@ctd07: guy got pulled over drunk driving the other night here in NS. He was arrested and buddy with him got a $697 fine for not being 2m away!

@ugez: the driving bit is about not spreading the virus.

The riding bit’s about not getting injured.

If people move between neighbourhoods it makes contact tracing exponentially harder.

@fpmd: I really appreciate your feedback on this. The situation on Vancouver Island is empty hospitals, surgeries are being cancelled and small businesses are closing down.

Do you think the younger cases are due to pre existing conditions? How are so many people who have contracted COViD 19 asymptomatic? Blood group?

Sorry for the questions, great to hear from the frontline without the media filter.
  • 5 0
@jclnv: Hey I'm sorry to hear that, I can see how it must feel pointless there. I'm hoping this will stay in the cities and be over before you ever see it where you are.

It does sound like the younger serious cases are mostly in people with pre-existing conditions based on what we've heard from other parts of the world. It's only a few cases that I know of directly, but we were all surprised when two younger ED staff, both very fit with no prior medical problems, were admitted to the ICU, one here and another at a nearby hospital. We all suddenly felt like none of us are safe. I'm not kidding when I say we all checked how much life insurance coverage we had.

But as you can see, I'm just talking about small numbers we're seeing directly. Why most but not all people are asymptomatic isn't clear. It's frustrating to be honest. That's why I was serious when I said thanks to you for posting the video by a respected epidemiologist whose job is to make sense of the bigger picture. We're all trying to make sense of this.

@fpmd: Thanks very much for the reply. It’s certainly made me backtrack my skepticism somewhat.

Good luck out there and thanks for taking the risk for us.

I think we should stop engaging @jclnv on this subject. He has done something here that rarely happens on Pinkbike - went into a conversation with certain opinions, actually listened to other people, and admitted that he is altering his views slightly.

And a huge thanks to @fpmd for all the help he is providing to others.

Agree. He lives in the neighbourhood & went for a ride up the climbing trail which is a fully gravelled, 4deg gradient, 2m wide track popular with runners and walkers. Its safer than riding on the road... Probably should have just ridden there, as it's literally only a 5min ride from his house, but the guy is obviously time pressed. It's just a beat up.
  • 8 1
He did nothing wrong but he could have easily avoided all the s..t storm. If he gets penalized in some way, he deserves it for simple reason of being stupid. it's a well known fact that the politician class has never been the smartest worldwide, however if the trail is 2km away from the house, just pedal from there. Let's say you had to take the car....for f..k's sake, why would you take the one that has your face printed on the sides.
  • 19 0
@P-Munari: The bigger question is why the hell does he have his face printed on his car???

@Otago: Maybe he lives at the top of Baldwin Street and couldn't face the ride home.

@commental: I told my dad the story of Baldwin street (if that's the super steep one) being mapped in London by someone who had never been to NZ. He found it absolutely hilarious. Almost couldn't believe it actually!

@jaame: Yes, it's the steep one. Residents must be finding it strange at the moment, not having 5000 Asian tourists walking up and down taking selfies every day.

Ha, ha, funny name, DonkeyTeeth. I bet there are a lot of dentist's reading this that can help you with those...lol

I agree, why drive only 2km to the trail, unless you maybe have a dog you want to ride with? I wonder if he does not want to wear down his nobby tires on the pavement, but with this pandemic, it's definitely not the time to worry about that? The biggest problem he made was transporting his bike using the van with his name and picture splattered across it. Seriously, what did he think, no-one would notice? Politicians are not always the brightest, so maybe no other explanation than that...
  • 2 0
@beast-from-the-east: How could you trust a politician with poor cardio? Oh wait, my premier is Doug Ford... Doesn't look like he could ride 2km to the trail

We (Belgium) can still ride as far as we want (but may not pass the borders to holland / France or Germany), as long as we ride with max 2 persons, 1.5m away from each other and start riding at our doorstep.

Bikers & Hikers are the only ones who are still allowed (and encouraged) to exercise their sport.

The combination of working from home and playing teacher for a 6y old however is not ideal to find time to go for a ride...
  • 2 0
I'm very much in your position - still working and have 3 kids. I've started Zwift on the turbo trainer. It's nothing like mountain biking, but it fits in with my personal situation and I'm retaining some fitness for when I finally can get out again... I do an hour each day as soon as the kids are in bed.
  • 1 0
Exactly, I see so many people who are bored to death and have no clue how to pass their time while I even struggle to find the time slot for a one hour bike ride these days. Hopefully daylight saving time will soon give me the chance to go out for small rides while my 3y old goes to bed.
  • 1 0
@TheHill: Interesting, so you're only allowed to cross the border to Luxembourg? If so, are the Luxembourg borders to Germany and France open?

With my bike vertical on the rear wheel I can just about roll it through the garage door so that makes it taller than I am (so over 183cm/6ft, would probably be 190 or so) which implies that if someone else is riding in front of me or behind me, I'm unlikely to manage to get closer to other riders on singletrack, unless we overtake. My commuter bike is even longer though obviously you're also more likely to overtake in traffic. Either way, I think unless you're doing BMX/4X/DS racing you won't break the 1.5m distance recommendation.

I live rurally in Scotland and have done more road miles than maybe ever. 40-80 miles 5 times a week or so. Its actually turning into a quality time for winter training with nothing else to do but ride.

If this minister bloke had ridden to the trail head...he would have been totally fine?
  • 11 2
The most amazing thing is this this is seriously the only thing we have heard about from the health minister during the entire pandemic “sorry Prime Minister for going mountain biking and driving there in a van with my face all over it”. Dr Clark, the health minister, is a doctor of theology. Probably a good thing he’s been leaving it to the actual health experts

Oh man! Poor guy. He’s not parked next to anyone and the trails aren’t full enduro. Lol

Firstly, this should be called physical distancing not social distancing. I’ve waved to people from a more than safe distance and people turn their heads and have a panic attack.
We’re humans we need human contact! If we become paranoid of one another and decompressing we will have lost ourselves!

So.. take away some people’s retirement savings ( market crash), their jobs and social engagement system and then outdoor recreation / ways of decompressing... I think we have conditions rife for PTSD/ CPTSD and other serious mental illnesses.

This guy WAS setting a good example. Mental health and physical health ( mind and body) are connected. How the fack can one fight off this virus if their nervous system is already jacked up and running at 100% capacity? This is a traumatic event and part of trauma involves decompressing and releasing. So, people watch CNN for 12 hours a day, eat trash and have generally terrible heath which is TOTALLY fine. But try to bolster your immune system and maintain mental health .. no don’t do that!!!

In Alberta Canada parks are closed for social distancing ( and because of littering). Don’t we want people spread out? I’ve been laid off.and I could be looking at a career change... the loss of these trails was definitely hard on me. - as hard as the career.

 @fpmd:
thanks for the balanced post.

I wonder if they think they actually need ventilators, or if it is an overeaction;
Imagine the Headline; 'Patient not placed on ventilator deteriorates in local hospital"
Seems a lot of this situation is driven by fear, and the biggest fear is doing the 'wrong thing'

Also i wonder how many as percent were under 40 yrars old, and if they had compromised immune systems.

Quote from WHO site: "Symptoms are generally mild especially for children and young adults"
  • 4 6
The more people who keep not taking this seriously, simply put, a lot more will die and this pandemic and recession we have now entered will continue for much longer. The thought of drowning in your own fluids as you're gasping for air and then dying alone is real and as terrible as it gets, so cannot see how some people keep downplaying all this. For you non-believers, here are some very scary findings from a medical worker in Seattle: www.propublica.org/article/a-medical-worker-describes--terrifying-lung-failure-from-covid19-even-in-his-young-patients?fbclid=IwAR3TNyYkxT3juRJ1mw4hnNDzH9g0CnXhNzhalCxo3w_wiRRojjfBjoEOGUo

Furthermore, hospital ICU's will become full and more people will not be able to be saved due to lack of ventilators if we do not practice safe social distancing.See what happened in Italy, Spain and now the U.S.. Who wants to be told by the hospital that they cannot help you, as they do not have enough ventilators. In fact 40% of people being hospitalized for the COVID-19 Virus are between 20-54 years old, so yes, younger people are not immune to this, as some ignorant uncaring people seem to think. Here's the link: globalnews.ca/news/6704349/us-cdc-report-coronavirus-hospitalized-younger-adults

Sorry for my rant, but this shit is real!

Please everyone, do you part and STAY AT HOME, practice social distancing (6.5ft apart) and wash your hands over and over and we can all get back to some kind of normal lives (hopefiully this summer), which includes what we all love, mountain biking...
  • 6 3
I would so vote for this guy and so much for NZ being progressive, they have traversed the cult of Socialism. The guy is the top Health official in the country and drives a beat up HiAce. Tick.

Has local been defined, or are we now at vigilante stage where the mob decides. 2 kays sounds local to me, and for a guy probs working 20 hour days for the good of the nation, yet can not go somewhere local to exercise and maintain mental health practicing social distancing as his own health directive? Socialsm. Tick.

Has this country as other progressive woke jurisdictions rolled out energy and other policies that are off in the never never, that they never never can afford. Tick.

Has the PM taken on cult status while presiding over some pretty abysmal records in terms of population and risk events, yet taken no blame. Tick

Has it been widely acknowledged that the infection and exposure rate across he globe may be way way higher than recorded and thus this hysteria while partially justified in terms saving lives is way over done, is inconsistent in terms of application to the standard vanilla middle class and removal of basic and constitutional rights including forced electronic monitoring, lack of sunset clauses in emergency legislation introduced, and in consistent application to disadvantaged or cultural groups that naturally socialise or huddle and despite it all continue to do so.  "If one assumes that the number of asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic cases is several times as high as the number of reported cases, the case fatality rate may be considerably less than 1%. This suggests that the overall clinical consequences of Covid-19 may ultimately be more akin to those of a severe seasonal influenza (which has a case fatality rate of approximately 0.1%) or a pandemic influenza (similar to those in 1957 and 196Cool rather than a disease similar to SARS or MERS, which have had case fatality rates of 9 to 10% and 36%, respectively.2"

www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMe2002387

If you take the time to seek out more honest news sources you'll find there are a significant number of scientists and doctors speaking out. The media and some governments are hyping up the fear for their own self interest and the economic fallout will be severe and cost many lives. It's lives compared to lives, not lives compared to dollars.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UO3Wd5urg0&feature=emb_title

Here in the US, the CDC is telling hospitals to error on the side of reporting deaths as being caused by Covid 19.

"It is important to emphasize that Coronavirus Disease 2019 or COVID-19 should be reported on the death certificate for all decedents where the disease caused or is assumed to have caused or contributed to death."

www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nvss/coronavirus/Alert-1-Guidance-for-Certifying-COVID-19-Deaths.pdf
  • 2 4
Stop this shit. Hospitals in the hard hit areas are completely overwhelmed. Their running out of sedation meds for intubating people. They're running out of respirators. Medical personnel is stretched to their breaking point. This is not media hype, I've heard it from many people who work in hospitals firsthand, including my dad. This is not the time for conspiracy bullshit.
  • 4 1
@roma258: did you look at the sources? The first link is to the New England Journal of Medicine and it’s to a very recent article put out with Dr. Fauci as one of the authors. The second is a YouTube video interview with an MD from Stanford. The last link is a CDC memo that went out to hospitals nationwide.

That is not conspiracy BS.
  • 2 0
@westeast: there's an issue with how the New England Journal presented their data. It is completely factual but presents the data in a way that gives a false sense of safety. They compare the mortality rate to the seasonal flu...which may be true under normal circumstances. However, the death rate is going to spike when supplies run out (beds, ventilators, doctors, etc). We are prepared for seasonal flus. We are not prepared for hospitals to be flooded with patients with a virus that we have little supplies for and with little beds available
  • 2 0
@westeast: At 278k infections and 7k deaths, I don't think you can afford to ignore it...
  • 1 1
@westeast: You cherry picked a couple sources and missed a whole shit load of context. One being- we can skip right past China and their unreliable data and look at the death rate in places like Italy, Spain and unfortunately now New York. We can look at the first hand accounts from hospitals in the epicenter of the pandemic, like the chair of surgery in Columbia.
twitter.com/ColumbiaSurgery/status/1245476381938630656

And this is happening while the city is essentially on lock down for two weeks straight. Imagine what things would look like without any mitigating efforts. Wuhan was shot down for 51 straight days, literally people not being allowed out of their house. As the health systems is overwhelemed, the case mortality skyrockets, as well as overall death rates because other emergencies can't get treated.
www.economist.com/sites/default/files/20200404_GDP101.jpg

Again. Stop. This. Nonsense.
  • 1 1
@Otago: With over 1,000 dying daily. Our own government is predicting over 100,000 dead now (with mitigation measures in place), and some people still want to say it's not big deal, it's nuts.
  • 2 0
 @Otago:

Who is suggesting we ignore it? I certainly am not.

I don't believe chastising a person for going for a mountain bike ride is the correct thing to do. He's not harming anyone nor is he spreading Covid 19 on the trial.

@roma258:

Rational discussion regarding Covid 19 outbreak and what we should do is not nonsense. Are we not supposed to discus important issues of the day?

How did I cherry pick sources and miss context?

If we look at Italy we see that the region hardest hit routinely overloads its medical system in the winter months. We've also seen studies siting that 99% of the deaths in Italy had severe underlying health conditions (www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-03-18/99-of-those-who-died-from-virus-had-other-illness-italy-says). It will be interesting to see an update to that statistic as time goes on.

Your Dr. from Columbia's daily updates don't provide much data, at least not the ones from the last few days I looked at. This guys twitter feed posts the projected ICU bed demand in NYC and the actual beds being used. So far the predictions have been a few multiples higher then realized. Hopefully that trend continue since that would mean less people in the ICU than expected (hopefully we can agree on that part).

twitter.com/YossiGestetner/status/1246208954801303556

Your one picture from the Economist lacks context. Do you have the rest of the article to provide it?

It appears you actually looked at one or more of the links I provided. Thank you for doing that and not simply calling me names. The article below, by a scientist in Germany, discusses the whole situation and also references the situation in Spain and Italy. It's a good read and should be compared to the CDC memo I linked to above regarding the methods for reporting cause of death. After all, it's that death rate that people keep citing. Please let me know what you think.

scientists4wiredtech.com/2020/03/covid-19-open-letter-from-prof-sucharit-bhakdi-to-german-chancellor-dr-angela-merkel
  • 1 1
@Otago: Who's ignoring it? I'm just trying to show how absurd it is to shame someone for going for a bike ride during a forced lock down that may do more harm then good. It's a discussion that needs to be had.

If you're using US statistics then compare covid 19 to the flue, where the cdc estimates for 2019/20 are:

- 39 to 55 million flu illnesses.
- 18 to 29 million hospital visits.
- 400,000 to 730,000 hospitalizations.
- 24,000 to 63,000 deaths.

I understand Covid 19 is new and I think some caution was reasonable, but if the data is correct that shows overall death rate for c19 is no worse then a bad flu year a total lock down and chasing people off bike trails is the wrong thing to do. The economic fall out all ready is going to cost many many lives, probably more than covid 19 will or ever would have. Additionally, covid 19 is out. It's not going anywhere. It should be discussed if it would be better to ask the very very old and immune compromised to stay home while c19 passes through the healthy population and natural heard immunity is built. No economic calamity necessary then and few lives lost that are associated with that economic fallout as well.
  • 1 0
@Rokcore: certainly those are things to consider, but you don't think Dr. Fauci, who seems to have a vested interest in creating panic, considers those things?

Other medical doctors and scientists around the word are reporting a death rate at or well below 1%... even in Italy. Average age of death in Italy was over 80 years old and 99 % of those had 1 or more chronic diseases.

Even in NY City, they are not even at half of capacity for ICU beds.

Things may change for the worse, but so far the data doesn't seem to indicate the closing of the economy or the lives that will be lost because of that was the right thing to do.

At least let people ride their bikes in peace. Cyclists are not spreading Covid 19!
  • 1 0
@westeast: that's not the point. The point is you cited a source that only looks at the numbers. The source says nothing about the factors that turn this into something much worse. Hospitals are not equipped to handle this. Period.
  • 5 0
Who took the picture ? They are obviously not at home either !

I consider 2 kilometres from my house local. Although, maybe he should have pedalled to the trail head. But that would have been an advertising opportunity lost ... politicians thinking/ lack of thinking isn’t hard to understand really.
  • 1 0
Was there a point to publishing this story at all pinkbike?
As for the driving there bit, driving somewhere for riding or walking has been recommended against; but a health minister is probably quite busy at the moment with not a whole lot of free time...
  • 1 0
Mountain biking, and all types of outdoor exercise, raise issues during these times. My corona persona includes daily rides. Most of us know how and where to ride tin a very low-risk manner. It's still fun, and I am virtually certain I can stay out of the emergency room. The other issue is community spread. My trails are not at all crowded, so social distancing is not a problem. Nonetheless, we can all protect other riders and hikers by wearing aerosol barriers. They can be as simple as a bandana, or a slick addition to a full-face. I working on something for my half-shell that is a little cooler than the bandana I am currently using. The key is to limit the dispersal of aerosols that you produce in the presence of others. This protects them more than you, but if everyone did it........
  • 1 0
this is how Im doing it. our trails can get very crowded, but IVe decided that in the times of Corona, Ill just get to the trailhead before sunrise and get done with my ride by 745 or so. Been doing that the last 2 weeks and each morning, I pass maybe 3 people total on a 1.5 hour ride.
  • 4 0
I'm sorry, but going out in a van that has your face plastered all over it to sneak in a ride is pretty hilarious.

f*ck that go for a ride and take it easy. For the 1000's of km I do every year I don't hurt myself on cruisy rides. If we all need to wrap ourselves in cotton wool then f*ck that kill me now. (I am in isolation and only really heading out for a head clearing ride).

Bit of a shock to find this news on Pinkbike, give the guy a brake! Official word here is ride local, ride safe and Carole Baskin did it.

 That bitch Carole Baskin
  • 1 0
He drove 2km from home to ride? Wouldn't it have been better to have just ridden there? A nice easy solo ride on mild terrain with minimal risk incurred would have been ok, surely?

I wish there were politicians like him in Germany. We have Peter Altmaier...Google him and you see what I mean...I love NZ by the way
  • 1 0
I think the dumbest thing about driving there is driving with your face on the van when you're not supposed to be driving to go biking
  • 1 0
I just thought the polls were there to help get us through. Come on now...who lied about how much they spend every year on mountain biking?

 cool van bruuuuhhh!!!
  • 4 0
 But can he freeride?
  • 2 1
Repeat this slowly in your mind: 'He drove a van to a trail, which has a picture of his face on'. Go to the top of the class sir!
  • 3 0
His only fault is going out in that van, that was not very smart.
  • 3 0
Whatever happened to “snitches get stitches”?
  • 2 0
Only reason he should be criticized is for not riding to his local trail by bike. No one would have spotted him then.
  • 3 0
The real problem here is the van with is face on it !!!

This guy's mensa score is the same as his sag setting. Seriously! How f*cking stupid! Ride the 2 km to the trail head, take another a vehicle, but whatever you do -- especially if you're Health Minister -- don't drive a giant billboard with your face on it to the EMPTY parking lot.

People need to chill the fuck out.
  • 1 0
Shit!! I've been trying super hard to stay at home. I'm going for biking now as trail is only 2k way.

2km I'm not sure about the conversion rate but isn't that like a hundred feet or so? Must be an enduro bro if he can't pedal that far and has to drive...
  • 2 0
Wow, Signal Hill looks dope. Wish I could be out riding.

Beware of the increased political correctness of dumbness.

Who cares? Our trails are gangbusters with folks riding. Oddly, here in the US we have the right to....period.
  • 3 2
Not everywhere in the US. Many trails, bike baths and beaches are closed in California. I can go for a ride in traffic, but I can't go for a surf or ride a paved bike path or dirt trail. All for something that is more akin to seasonal flu than an end of the world disease.
