Winter is here and it looks like the party in Europe is over for a while. But the other side of the globe, bike season has just begun!

We invited Nico Vink, Vincent Tupin and Gaetan Rey (Shaperideshoot) to the amazing bike park of Cikole, Indonesia. This spot is virtually unknown to the Western world, but it provides everything you need to have the time of your life. An amazing flow, endless berms, kickers everywhere, a very fast shuttle service and most of all: The Dirt! It's so grippy you have to ride it for yourself to believe it. You know things will get heated when Vink and Vinny T get to shred a place like this!

Cikole is located in the west of the island of Java, Indonesia. After you take a short flight from Singapore or Bali, you arrive in Bandung: the capital of West-Java. It's located 700m above sea-level which makes temperatures perfect for riding all year long. Bandung is home to the Cikole National Park, surrounded by pine and turpentine tree forests on the face of the volcano of Mt. Thangkuban Parahu. The real treat for us bike riders is obviously the hidden bike park, hands down one of the most fun riding spots in Asia.

The shuttle service is super fast and efficient. You can ride until you're beat, chill out, grab some food and get back to riding whenever you feel like it. The locals are super nice and always down for another run.

I know I'm going to get negative props for life on this one, but I really wish the industry would stop glorifying berm slashing.. I know it looks awesome in EVERY edit right now... But as a trail worker and sustainability advocate it does sooo much damage. And I think there's a real disconnect for these young rider that don't understand a lot of these setups are just built for the shoot and often not a local trail network. Or they take the time to repack damage done by a session of beating up berms. Just my thoughts, let the down votes begin:

i agree with you.. and yes, i'm cikole local. cool video but somehow i just can't enjoy it, sorry..
  • 147 7
As a trail builder myself I still love smashing berms because I ride bikes for fun and that's what I enjoy, whats the point in building something you're not allowed to enjoy?
  • 77 2
These guys ARE trail builders. And let's be honest most riders can't slash berms like that.
  • 65 6
I am also a trailworker and I say slash that berm
  • 8 8
yes, part of me happy that someone was having fun.. but some part cringe of the hero dirt slashing part.. i know that it was setup with fresh dirt and repacked afterwards, but not a good example of sustainability (for younger riders) - maybe the video can also show how the dirt was repacked afterwards? just an idea..

you can see some of the berm/jumps being built couple years back :

As a berm I say slash that trail builder

@me2menow: pretty sure berm slashes rider at 1:14 when it looks like he is going OTB before they cut the shot. Way to take back the movie berm!
  • 3 0
@opidiah: hahaha, I noticed that as well. He definitely ate shit in that last shot. That was an awesome edit.
  • 4 1
@freductions: If everyone who slashes berms also comes out and rebuilds them, we're all good. But what's the point in building something if you barely get to enjoy it before some chump who's never touched a shovel comes and destroys it?
  • 1 0
@freductions: I like the natural berms in Gobi Desert. The big mountain freeriding lines from the mother nature.Just a bike, a rider and a place to ride.
  • 2 0
@bismojo: Looking at the scars on the trees, I am thinking that is a rubber plantation?
  • 2 2
I think you missed the point. The dirt was soft, there was no way around blasting or slashing. No trail damage was done.

 I don’t give a f*ck bro. I’ll slash berms when I want to.
  • 7 0
 @Lloyd-Braun: whoa there mister edgy
  • 11 0
No. I m a builder too and berms are meant to be destroyed and reshape when the ruts are too deep, as a rider you cannot have a better feeling to feel the dirt blow up. Digging is no problem

@me2menow: not being edgy just speaking my mind...
  • 3 0
As many above have already said....plenty of builders love to smash their own tracks to shit...it's just plain fun.
  • 5 0
@bismojo: funny that you have a couple nice photos of you slashing some berms
  • 4 1
Berm slashing is the mullet trimming of mtb
  • 2 0
Come on, they clearly threw some fresh dirt at the top of the existing berm. There is pretty much only 1 berm being slashed in the video. Should we implement a trail slashing, drifting regulation now?!
  • 2 3
berms could have been packed better but i agree.. ride don't roost ! plus riding is faster than slashing anyways
  • 10 1
and this is why chairlift bike parks rule.

destroy everything and it will be fixed soon by someone who loves their job.

pay cash, scrub, skid, slash and bash, it gets fixed, repeat and rinse as needed.

how many more sleeps until the bike park opens?

In Oregon right now, trail advocates are fighting so hard against the perceptions fostered by videos like this. Townhall meetings and guest op-ed in local papers are filled with talk about how much the mountain bike industry glorifies trail damage, and therefore the locals can't be trusted to build and maintain trails.

So frustrating.

I just want to legally and sustainably build trails in the 1000's of acres of forest in town, but instead we have to constantly battle against things like this:
www.oregonlive.com/opinion/index.ssf/2017/11/let_forest_park_remain_portlan.html

(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻)

So yeah.

Stop the berm slashing and stop making music like that and get off my lawn.

"... but I really wish the industry would stop glorifying berm slashing." - holy crap. Is this the MTB equivalent of the SJW shit that's going around? A Trail Justice Warrior, or TJW...
  • 5 0
@pmhobson: It sucks your area is full of idiots
  • 3 1
If you built it or if you know the digger and he is cool with it, shred away! if it's not your trail and obviously built by a small group of peeps on sensitive dirt, DON'T BLAST THE TRAIL ALL TO SHIT! it's like coming into someone else's house and kicking over furniture cause it's fun and your justification was that the front door was unlocked and the house is on a public street, seriously... don't be a dick when you're out enjoying someone else's hard work!
  • 4 0
There's no way you get to ride a berm this loose, that blows up like this unless you've just dug it fresh yourself. No one is shovelling dirt onto existing berms like they did to create this video. And you're not going to get this result no matter how hard you 'slash' a hardpacked berm. I see no problem here, other than as some people have pointed out, that it may distort an outsider's perception of how much damage mountain bikes do

 @me2menow: made my day!

@OldOtter: hi mate, yes there are a lot of scars at the pine trees, and that's turpentine harvesting.. cheers!

 @freductions: YESSSS thank you
  • 3 0
Let me tell you something here: you are a big fat mess. Trails can be destroyed, it represents work for the american people
  • 1 0
@opidiah: totally agree. That was gonna be my comment too. You beat me to it. He definitely went out the front door on that last shot.
  • 2 0
I like to smash bro..sorry my man But it’s either me or the berm
  • 105 7
no more... of this music please
  • 6 0
Thought I was going to be the only one...
  • 9 1
Came here to say this. It's possibly the worst song I have ever heard in a MTB edit.
  • 6 1
This song is not my style, but I still like its energy much more than the ones that are trying to be "soulful." I'll take shouting girls and a beat over a whiny guy playing guitar slowly any day!
  • 2 0
Dude, this is a video with Nico Vink in it so this is the new Slayer tune. Get used to it.
  • 38 4
Licencing tolerable bike-movie music is still prohibitively expensive I see...
  • 22 2
You pretty much have to listen to that one with the sound off...

 Everything is awesome!!!!!

everything is cool when you're part of a team!!!...

"Winter is here and it looks like the party in Europe is over for a while"

Sorry, but here in southern Europe the party is never over,we can ride 365 days a year just about anywhere.

  • 5 1
THIS EDIT IS DOPE AS HELL !!! berm roost FTW ! btw they do apply the "no dig no ride" rule ! *because i was there while they filming*
  • 4 0
It is amazing watching top rider like Nico shredding Cikole. Their speed, skills, and intensity is way above local riders'. Mind blown.
  • 1 0
i would happily build and rebuild and build again every berm for the slashing and shredding and hucking -and screw it- rebuilding! building makes me happy, slashing and making moves in the air makes me happy too, and then more building.
  • 1 0
You guys know they're just messing with you with the music in all these videos now because it's comical how much everyone complains right? This is all that's left because every other genre of music has been whined about on PinkBike.
Stop complaining & things will balance back out.
  • 4 0
They had drinks with Morgan Freeman!?
  • 6 3
Nico has done his fair share of trailbuilding already to destroy berms for the rest of his life.No problem.
  • 3 0
 That's how I think i ride...
  • 6 2
Better with mute on ; )
