First spied at this year's Press Camp and first seen in the flesh at Interbike, we are proud to announce the new Tava aero road/CX helmet is now available to order!

The Tava represents Kali Protectives' most technologically advanced, and aerodynamic road and CX helmet currently available. Founder and lead engineer, Brad Waldron developed two new technologies, (Composite Fusion Squared and Bumper Fit 2.0), spent hours analyzing CFD data, followed by rounds of wind tunnel testing to make this helmet a reality. The result is an aero helmet that is smaller, lighter, and thus, faster everywhere.

Helmets will beginning shipping from our USA warehouse December 7th, and will retail for $250 USD.

Well the helmets not really my cuppa tea but bloody hell his bike handling is about as good as it gets.
  • + 11
Sway the opposite stereotype? Loosest clothing for road bikers trend start now.
  • + 44
 Rogatkin stole the visor
  • + 2
 JKW doesn't fall!
  • + 7
My tendons hurt just watching this video.
  • + 3
He's not going to get any KOM riding stunts on the trail. He needs to remove all the obstacles like every other kom chaser.
  • + 1
Someone tries to copy Smith helmet in a drunk mode.
  • + 0
I remember the good times when people rode their bikes to have fun. Strava ruins the attitude of so many cyclists.
  • + 131
He lost his KOM so he took a shortcut to get it back? HA So STRAVA.
  • + 52
and he ditched his whole crew to do it!
  • + 73
Looks to me like the idea was he took trail shortcuts to get to and from the section of road on which he needed to reclaim his KOM and then rejoin his crew.
  • + 64
hey @mtbracken we are trying to build ourselves up by attacking other bike riders, please to silencify. the narcissism of small differences shall be reinforced thanks
  • + 21
Fuck yeah. This is Pinkbike comments. Get out of here with your empathy
  • + 12
No room for Mother Theresa in pinkbike.
  • + 7
Ah. yes @owl-X. My bad. I'll remember to keep it divisive in the future, except for the Boost sucks, it's too expensive, and suchlike circle jerks.
  • + 54
But for real though, stay away from my KOM. It took 13 tries, a bloody face, and three occasions of blindsiding sorority girls to get that time.
  • + 11
 small price to pay
  • + 1
ok for the unstravafied wtf is KOM?
  • + 26
KOM is the answer to the age old question: What is the meaning of life?
  • + 1
 Kurse of Must-have
  • + 9
 KOM=Keep On Masturbating.
  • + 1
It means King of the Mountain, or fastest on the internet, and becomes the obsession of road riders and dweebs.
  • + 3
my small city got 1,000+ segment created by roadies even housing area... i was going to KOM it all with a scooter . . haha
  • + 2
If KOM is for roadbikes, that means I can bring a Yamaha R1, right?
  • + 46
I got shouted at last time I went out in my underwear... How do roadies get away with it
  • + 120
Its simple, we don't wear underwear....

@mckennaa guyz we've identified the roadie. INFILTRATOR! KILL IT! KILL IT WITH FIRE!!!
  • + 1
Why such neg, the roadies must be here in force
  • + 42
the helmet looks horrendous. plus, whats the ventilation like?!

CX bikes are rad.
  • + 6
 Looks like a DJ helmet...
  • + 13
More like half of a DJ helmet..
  • - 2
a quick search found quite a few helmets at WalMart that looked about the same. I mean, nothing near 250-large, so they can't be as good, right? but style-wise they were on point.
  • + 4
It's literally half of a DJ helmet: www.pinkbike.com/photo/12792909
  • + 1
a DJ helmet still has more vents
  • + 2
made the mistake once of wearing a bmx lid for a xc race, head nearly boiled!
helmets have vents for a reason. It might technically be more aerodynamic, giving 0.2% gains over an hour, but how much energy do you lose because your brain is overheating
  • + 0
that cx looks like a steel..x
  • + 36
Thanks for having me to be a part of the video! It came out really rad. Jeff is an awesome guy!
  • + 48
Thanks for waking up at the crack of dawn, wearing spandex, and eating breakfast burritos Scott!
  • + 4
hats off to Scott's inspired acting!
  • + 6
It's the start of quite the career my friend.
  • + 2
Breakfast burritos at Chill Out? -- Contact me for the next filming.
  • + 4
@kaliprotectives if you're thankful for someone waking up early, eating burritos and wearing spandex then please spread the word, it's good to see gratitude for what I do
  • + 27
im not convinced Kali knows how strava works. nose wheelie'ing the wrong direction into a turn is definitely not the fasest way down a trail....
  • + 33
He doesn't start until he is back on the pavement for a climb, all that other riding was to get to it.
  • + 25
Nothing pisses off roadies quite like leaving Strava on for the drive home after a mountain bike ride.
  • + 4
 lol!
  • + 7
I accidently did it on a bus in the alps after we decided we couldn't be bothered to pedal up. Felt a bit bad but someone's beaten me now :S maybe he just got a faster bus
  • + 17
This guy flew past me on a climb in Santa Cruz last summer. The speed is real! I mean, I'm sure if I had a carbon frame I would have kept up.... right? Fine, I'm just a slow climber.
  • + 6
I climb slowly as well, just saving my strength for beer guzzling!
  • - 1
If this guy wanted an aerodynamic helmet what's he doing jumping logs and doing wheelies???
  • + 0
The difference is that the other guy had boost hubs. You would be just as fast aswell with boost hubs.
  • + 16
KOMpliment, excellent riding but ugly helmet.
  • + 5
Half you guys don't get it. It's an aero road helmet from a company that people consider a mountain bike brand. This is a brilliant way to have those two worlds join. Killer riding awesome product.
  • + 6
Cool as feck vid....why is it though when I tried that on my roadie the bloody wheels collapsed !! I think I like that lid too.
  • + 1
Not sure if your question is serious, but if it is, the bike is a cyclocross bike, which is built to better withstand rough riding
  • + 1
My piss poor attempt (it would appear) at sarcasm lost on the Internet !!

Yes I get that it's a CX bike mate, thank you for clearing that up though.
  • + 1
I thought it was sarcasm, but wanted to lend a helping(informative) hand, in case it wasn't! I laughed at your comment regardless.
  • + 5
Jeff Kendal-Weed is an awesome rider! Just killed it in this video! When riding on road makes it to pinkbike...It's because of JKW! Killer!
  • + 5
I've been busted up for the past two weeks and every time I come on PB and watch an edit I die a little inside. I WANT TO RIDE BICYCLES.
  • + 2
KOM is King of Mountain, awarded to the fastest time through a segment. Segments are defined by the users to start and end at certain parts of trail. Often segments are defined for downhill sections and others for uphill sections. Same for road rides. If you want to go fast, try Strava, it pushes you to shave time off your rides, at the cost of loss of freedom. Sometimes it's better to turn Strava off and just enjoy the ride. I'm glad to do both. I would not want to have to true that dudes wheel. Nice riding, difficult on what appears to be some level of cyclocross bike but not my wheelhouse.
  • + 6
Awesome riding! Any idea what handlebar he's using?
  • + 2
looks similar to the Salsa Cowchipper that I run on my gravel bike.
  • + 1
+1 want to know what bar. Can anyone confirm? There are a bunch in this category I think -- on one midge, cow chipper, etc.
  • + 5
some one fucking did this to me. first time ever getting a KOM, that night he took it back.
  • + 6
He was probably lying in a ambush site that night waiting for you to come back like he did.
  • + 3
its on my commute. its within a second. i might have to change my tires to beat him and stay KOM. lol
  • + 6
 John Hauer stole it
  • + 1
^^ is local...frickn Hauer has every dirt KOM around.
  • + 1
Unrivaled impact protection... what helmets are you testing it against and using what testing?

Looks like a cool urban helmet and I get where they're going with the CX target market. But that ventilating better be efficient as hell. I have a helmet with similar sized vents and my head gets hot as hell unless I'm smashing.
  • + 10
Hey @onemanarmy, we have released graphs of our wind tunnel and rotational results to media outlets. We don't have any of them listed currently on our website, but BikeRumor has done a nice write up here:

www.bikerumor.com/2015/06/23/pc15-kali-unveils-next-level-protection-starting-with-new-tava-aero-road-helmet

There is currently no established internationally recognized standard for testing rotational forces, so we utilized the guidelines set forth by MIPS. We also have our own internal standards, which we have developed in conjunction with leading brain trauma experts at the Imperial College of London.

Hope that helps clear things up!
  • + 1
It does. Good write up. Just finished reading it.

But that doesn't really answer my questions. Says unrivaled impact protection but you talked and the article talked about rotational impact. And you didn't say what helmets you tested.

Funny thing is... I'm looking at a MIPS testing sled right now.

Wanted to specify that I'm in no way talking crap. I am actually a big fan of Kali's helmets. I had a friend that worked there and I tried to get in on some graphics/design work... still think at the time my stuff would have been way better than what you were running... but I'm Bias. LOL! I think there are really 2 companies that are pushing safety standards in bikes... 3 in helmets in general and Kali is one of them. I like the philosophy and the thought behind what's going on over there.

I just don't like terms like "unrivaled impact protection" without anything backing it up.

I am glad to see that you're using a real wind tunnel and not computer generated sims.

Looking forward to seeing more stuff, more testing and more tech!
  • + 3
In regards to impact protection, we're referring to the implementation of the new Nano Core foam, which uses a opposing cones to dissipate impacts of different speeds from both the head hitting the helmet and the helmet hitting the ground. We're also referring to the use of Bumper Fit 2.0, which is a material designed to help with both low speed impacts and rotation.

As to why we don't reveal what competitors helmets we tested? Well, we're not trying to pick on anyone. But rest assured, we weren't comparing the Tava to department store lids....That said if you're looking at a MIPS testing sled right now, you're probably familiar enough with testing results to guess exactly which helmets we tested.

If you're curious about more indepth answers, please call the office and we can try and setup a time for you to meet up with Brad Waldron. He is the Co-founder and still heads up all development for the brand. Regardless of whether you work for another brand, he would be interested in chatting.
  • + 1
Brad is one of the smartest individuals I've come across. I would love to just listen to the dude talk about all of this. I literally spent a couple hours just listening to engineers talk about the real world value of real wind tunnels verse computer sims along with a bunch of other very interesting things. LOL! Love it... and I'm not even an engineer. LOL! Thank you for the elaboration. Like I said... I'm a fan. I like your lids. You're one of the few companies I respect. Beyond that... It's rad that you guys are on here answering questions. I dig.

Ibis is on my short list of next bikes I will consider. I loved my 2013 Santa Cruz Nomad and my 2014 650b is in my opinion the best bike on the planet, and performance will always trump conviction. That being said Santa Cruz Bikes did sell, they are no longer an American owned company. I haven't liked how short the Ibis bikes were in the past, at 6"1.5 im way too big for a large and an XL is just too much bike. Ibis has stretched their bikes out and i think that one change alone for me makes them a must ride bike before my next purchase.
  • + 2
If you want to try an XL HD3 out let me know.
  • + 3
There is always a Pivot Mach 6, American owned company, light, still and pedal efficient.
  • + 1
 And really short top tubes...
  • + 3
so happy someone finally did one of these edits with a cx/road bike set up properly. not with flat pedals, bars rolled down, ect
  • + 4
All I can think now is . . . . when is the next Road Bike Party Video coming ???
  • + 4
Is it still cyclocross if you never have to dismount?
  • + 1
See how happy he looks from that ride compared to his road riding buddies? All he needs now is some knobbly tyres, some suspension front and rear, wider handlebars, flat pedals......
  • + 0
Wow! I loved that. Not sure it'd sell helmets better but wishing:
His kom was on the dirt trail so I could yell no fair, road bike.
When the helmet is hung on bike at end the camera pans to background and he's having a picnic by a pond manet style 'cept reverse where the hotties are dressed and checking him out
Leave out passing that group straight banana roadie pals, cooler if he fitted in.
  • + 1
Nobody? You a bunch of troglodytes?

  • + 4
anyway I don't know what is a KOM
  • + 3
 King of Montana !!
  • + 3
Mister jones, the fact that you dont know what a KOM is makes you the coolest guy on Pb. It's like racing for people who are scared to race. Think shadow boxing instead of real boxing.
  • + 1
 wha? hahahaha

OK big boy racer. Why would anybody possibly want something to push them when training alone?
  • + 3
Dang roadies skidding up the trails. Hooligans I say! Seriously, nice video!
  • + 3
Holy s*** balls that video gets me psyched! I want to ride that route and I want that lid!!!!
  • + 5
 W/S SC represent
  • - 1
in the 80's / 90's all the helmets were closed shells... then they come out with perforated helmets because the higher ventilation supposed to make your head feel less hot and your body would perform better.... now... they say the closed helmets offer aero advantage and you go faster.... 10 more years and they go back to perforated...
unless you are doing a road time trial with those space invaders looking helmets, the close shell it is not going to make you go faster....
  • + 2
it's so close to what my friends and I are doing after work, nice video and good spirit ! Brrraaaapppp !
  • + 3
Road nope CX nope That lid nope Strava nope Bike skills yep
  • + 5
 I'd like a poem
  • + 9
There once was a roadie from nantucket- who took his old road bike to huck it- he sent it real far- then hit a gay bar-and is now on his knees to suck it.
  • + 3
this vid brings some awesome vibes..
  • + 3
 A free-ride movie in a commercial?!
  • + 3
 Tron wants his helmet back.
  • + 2
As much as I'm not a fan of road bikes, cross bikes or spandex. this guy is the man!!!
  • + 2
That riding was pretty rad... after seeing that, I no longer feel quite as cool when riding my CX bike.
  • + 3
Must have a quick release on that seat post.
  • + 2
Turn Strava off and just ride.
  • + 2
Good bye moto shorts. Hello Spandex.
  • + 1
 1. Strava Sucks. 2. Helmet looks like something the special needs kid wore in school. 3. Riding was awesome.

Cool video Smile
  • + 1

  • + 1
Really want to impress me? Race Garbo on that bike!
  • + 0
All components and frame warranty voided! But I was just riding along on my road bike....

  • + 1
 What trail is this?
  • + 1
from the exit shot it looks like they're riding back to proper santa cruz from wilder ranch.
  • + 1
 Emma Mccrary
  • + 1
are you sure it's Emma McCrary? It's just that I've ridden Emma McCrary and I don't recall it being so flat and pedally.

I could totally be wrong... If so, my apologies.
  • + 1
Trails are a mix of UC, wilder and EMT. The flat off the road is at twin gates. I think I saw S&T, Evan's, MH, EMT, old cabin and a couple of other spots.
  • + 1
 Thanks for clarifying!
  • - 1
i got pain in my back just by watching this video
  • - 2
 ugly
