17 Bicycles Stolen from Norco Storage Facility

Oct 20, 2010
by Tyler Maine
Source: Norco Bikes

This past weekend Norco had their off-site storage facility broken into. The thieves in question went straight for the goods, stealing a selection of high-end Norco Downhill, Freeride and Haro BMX bicycles.

Read on,If there is one thing, for better or worse, that will get a group of cyclists riled up, it is bike theft. It is something that affects us all, but when our communities unite it is something that we can put a stop to.

We are putting the call out to all riders in the Vancouver BC area to help us keep an eye out for the Norco and Haro bicycles below. Whether it is online, on the trail, from the back of a van or elsewhere we are asking that you please contact your local Police immediately if you come across anyone trying to sell these bicycles, frames or parts kits from them.

The bikes that were stolen are:

• 10 x 2011 Norco Team Dh:

• 2 x 2011 Norco 250:

• 1 x 2011 Norco Shore 2.0:

• 2 x 2011 Haro 400.2 BMX:

• 2 x 2011 Haro 400.3 BMX:
www.harobikes.com/bmx/bikes/400-Series/6/

These bikes should be easy to spot! Of the bikes stolen, the 2011 Norco Team Dh’s had just arrived at Norco and only one dealer and a couple of Norco staff have possession of these bicycles in Western Canada. This makes the Dh’s unique and easy to spot as they have custom decals and a full Saint group, so if you notice anyone posting either complete bikes or parts for sale or riding the new bikes that are not associated with Norco again please let the Police know ASAP.

The West Coast riding scene is made up of some of the most dedicated cyclists around and we appreciate your help in trying to stop the low down scum and scourge of the cycling scene – bicycle thieves. With your help we are hoping to nail these thieves and we thank you for helping us stop the “fun-wreckers.”

  • 68 8
man, i wish everyone could just die who steals bikes.
  • 66 1
Norco should give out the serials..
  • 17 0
if only 1 dealer has them... wouldnt it be easier to change something about them i.e. small change to stickers which makes them noticeable as the earlier ones i know in the UK they dont get here to February 2011 so they have plenty of time to make a minor change
  • 5 2
That's a bit too far but we still get the piont. Good luck finding the bikes! Hope they get them soon
  • 17 1
they should just make them with blue stikers in stead of red.. A guy with the red sticker: excuse me sir, that bike is not yours.
  • 31 1
Those DH frames are very rare at present. Hope the thieving scum who did this get caught
  • 4 1
when bikes are stolen, they are usually sold at ridiculous prices. That's something to keep an eye open for as well
  • 1 0
the dh bikes alone are worth about £40,000... unlucky
  • 1 0
once your stuff gets stolen then you get really high premiums, and seeing as like £50,000 has been stolen here i dont think insurance will cover it very well
  • 4 0
they went straight for the good stuff
  • 16 1
This is what you have to do
www.youtube.com/watch?v=xi6XtthI2F0
  • 2 2
Seems to me like too many bikeshops/storage/events (interbike) are having this happen...Better security is needed. I suggest electric walls, floors, and fences for bike theives.

But man that sucks...I hope they get caught!
  • 3 0
If someone steals 50,000 dollars its bad when someone steals 50,000 dollars in bikes thats when you are in deep shit. Wink
  • 3 0
electric floors lol so they only turn on when the thieves are in the middle of the warehouse haha that would teach em
  • 1 0
 Holy shit that really sucks.
  • 3 3
i know everybody here would love to take those bikes for free, but seriously, THERE NOT YOURS, have some respect..
  • 2 1
This is good for awareness and all but the person who will actually buy one of these bikes new at the shop in this area is gonna be hated and looked at so bad. In my case I would not buy a bike like this if I knew this was going on in my aera. Think twice Norco!!
  • 10 6
honeslty i hate to say it but if someone can steal 17 bikes without getting cought then norco is doing something wrong, or its an inside job. they deserve to be stolen if norco's security is so bad that someone can make off with 17 bikes. atleast they wernt owned cause that would be terrible
  • 5 2
I like how everyone is trying to figure out a way so bikes cant be stolen anyone thought of the idea of locking them up after store hours
  • 8 1
or just getting some decent security and maybe get the cops off their fat donut eating asses and show up fast enough to stop them
  • 3 0
electric floors only work if thieves were bare foot
  • 3 0
Or you could activate the sprinkler system on the electric floor when the theives are walking on it Smile Shows and tires wouldn't matter then!
  • 4 0
sucks for the people who already have these bikes. wonder if they'll get the cops called on them
  • 1 0
as long as they have proof of purchase it will be fine
  • 2 0
still it would be funny. and their friends wud give em shit saying their bike is stolen
  • 3 0
Any of you guys ever actually been in a bike storage facility? They're usually unmarked buildings with hundreds of bikes on racks, often in leased warehouse space. Security is tough to guarantee, since you could load 17 bikes in probably 3 minutes (with 2 or 3 people). I'm not surprised to hear this, and it's a totally different type of theft than the Interbike deal.
  • 17 4
So who wants to buy my new Norcos?
Cheap cheap.

.
.
What, too soon?

norco mass prodouces so its all good, they will have already made the bikes to replace them right now. if anybody stole stuff from dobermann or misfit that would be bad. atleast they didnt steal from a company who dosnt mass produce and actually cares what happens to their stuff
  • 6 0
Its okay to steal because they're mass produced?? The whole idea of stealing bikes is what pisses me off. It doesn't matter if it's off a rich kid who never rides his bike or in a factory or whatever! it's the whole concept!
  • 3 8
flag brett236 (Oct 21, 2010 at 4:35) (Below Threshold)
its not okay to steal but its better than the small companies who cant aford to mass produce let alone pay to replace 17 bikes

im not worried becoz im not a fan ... but still it sucks things like thjis happen to norco...
  • 1 0
ironic only 22 hours ago i was talking about norco loosing bikes, which totaly sucks ass, little would i know its happened to me, my only bike has been pinched by some dirty C**ts, and im a student in my first term of uni so im not goin riding for a long time >Frown
  • 2 1
Does nobody have insurance? I am positive Norco does. Even for my small business having coverage for $1 million in goods and materials is mandatory for operations. I don't agree with anyone stealing bikes but when mine was stolen I had a cheque in the mail from my home insurance policy the next day. Ended up costing me less than $100 to replace.

Also, insurance policies do not generally increase because of theft. Due to the fact that it is a property claim and cannot be proven to be Norco's fault (even if an employee left a door unlocked) the only accountability is with the insurance company. It isn't like a motor-vehicle claim.

And Will-BrownGT, the word you are looking for is coincidental not ironic.
  • 1 0
 futurama
  • 1 2
well transition would take bigger hit considering it's a small company compared to norco
  • 8 2
I dont know what the big deal is about, for one these companies have insurance sooooo, and for two if they dont they can always report it as a loss against there income saving almost all in taxes. Now if someone steatls a bike from me thats a different story, one big fat loss. Either way I dont agree with it just glad it wasnt personal bikes.
  • 6 0
Insurance claims add to product cost, which ultimately have to get passed on to the consumers (you and me). Trying to write off a loss doesn't mean you magically get back the $$ spent on development and production. Still a financial loss in a tight industry.
  • 1 0
yup u right they can always tax loss swap it! where as we simpletons cannot and have to accept a loss, and it is not all about the money, it is about the fact that we put blood sweat and tear into our bikes and that is what kills!
  • 2 0
While I agree with BJAMIN's comments, greymon also has a good point. In addition, I think it's good to just get thieves into jail in general. The same guys that stole the bikes from Norco could be breaking into your garage as well.

On a side note, would it be in poor-taste to post a satirical "for sale" ad on PB for some brand new, fresh from the warehouse, 2011 Norcos?
  • 2 0
i do have to agree that both make very valid points as do u in pointing that out! and yes i would find it hilarious to see those ads, as evil as it may be, mind i have a sick sense of humour! i may laugh, but i do not condone! lol!
  • 2 0
Maybe a WTB add for 10 norco team dh's would be more appropriate. Then you wont be investigated for being the theif but still get all the laughs. Realistically at this amount of theft I could see these being sold in a croked store. Its hard to stealthily unload 10 of everything brand new even if it is stripped down. In the past I've witnessed sports junkies buying a couple thousand dollars worth of brand new stuff in multiples for trade in value. No questions asked. Never bought anything from there after.
  • 1 0
I can't imagine what bike shop would touch hot merchandise, since you can't offer warranty on it. You would basically have to tell the customer it was hot. More likely that the bikes will be shipped and sold overseas. If they were to stay local, I would suspect at the very least that they would be re-painted and passed off as second-hand.
  • 1 0
Excuse me? I don't appreciate what you're implying.
  • 1 0
I was simply making a point that a thief who was sophisticated enough to identify, target, and break into a warehouse full of expensive bikes, wouldn't be stupid enough to to try to fence the bikes through a bike shop, as Kevinthelilbiker had suggested. Also, my comments are not "coaching" thieves, but instead, actually are, "positive feedback on how to stop the a*sholes" because if you're going to recover the bike, you have to know where to look. You've got a lot of negativity in your posts, it's not cool.
  • 1 0
You need to take a deep breath dude. Go fire one up and chill out. And for the record, I did say where to look, ie. look at overseas shipments, and re-painted "second hand" bikes.
  • 5 0
Man it is hardcore... we here at Velocity Cycles (just down the street from the Norco wharehouse in port kells) were hit hard the thursday nite before .. stolen was... Intense Slopestyle Frame, white Carbon Nomad Complete, Itnense Tracer red,Demo 7 , jamis Bam, Intense 951, like 17 forks (world cups, teams , races , totems, till , computer , gloves, huge loss ... so brutal...i think a major criem unit is blasting through here wrecking it all for honest people trying to get their bike on.. other bike shops watch out! and plus like every day i here of customers bikes being stolen...times are tough HST is killing bike sales bad enough let alone these guys taking all the goods.
  • 1 0
 unlucky velocity Frown
  • 5 0
Damn that's a lot of money worth of bikes stolen, hopefully they show up in a warehouse bust like it's happened before. Good luck Norco
  • 3 0
that really isnt funny i had my bike stolen the night before last, but lucky for me the left the frame in a hedge round the corner from my house, still not happy as i have no wheels so cant ride

some theiving scum tried to steal my norco from college yestaday!! luckily college security caught them in the act and they were arressted! they have a history so they almost certainly face prison, thats two of them out the way! good luck norco!

seriously stupid thieves did anyone hear more about that bike stolen from inter bike?
  • 1 3
No, but like I said, it was replaced and the guy was running the same green bombers people were saying weren't possible to get in a weeks time. Smile So no sad story there. New bike got promo'd, the new bike got even more promo by being stolen (so corsair probably even got more promo for free with that stolen article than what was worth in the bike it's self). So it worked out good for everyone. Smile Just sucks it was another bike being stolen :/
  • 1 0
guys will probably buy new frames from different companies like trek which offers saint specs, throw the stolen goods on the frame ride it and sell it as a used session. as far as the frame goes either get rid of it or wait a while for the popularity of this bike to go up. what is good to think about is the stolen property wont hardly gross near the value of the stolen goods at retail price and there is the chance they get caught. bunch of nervous ass wipes hoping they made free money, which really isnt free especially if they get caught.
  • 1 0
holy crap! you will see them either overseas or locally in the streets with ducktape or electrictape on them!!!!!not much to say but either the s.o.b. will be super smart about what they did or super dumb!I got my dh bike stolen this summer, i love to hate thief.
  • 1 0
These bike stealing f*ggots need to go f*ck off. I've had 2 friends get all there shit stolen recently. Scott Gambler and a Atomlab Trailking both with insane parts. Other friend had a $6500+Transition Blindside and his 09 Brodie cretin both stolen.
  • 1 0
If these people managed to get away with 17 bikes I highly doubt they will be found. This was most likely planned meaning the people who did this won't be out and about riding on trails or talking about it online. Nonetheless good luck!
  • 1 0
It will cost way too much to change decals etc on other bikes being manufactured when the company is insured and will get all losses paid back. The $60,000 loss in stolen property is a drop in the bucket with annual revenue of $16,264,960 and employs a staff of approximately 110. It is sad that we have scum walking among us, but don't get too worked up over this.
  • 7 6
I hate people who steel bikes from riders. I don't think I put someone who steals from a company warehouse in the same catagory as the guy who cuts my lock off.

A guy who loses his bike to a filcher is on the hook. Norco loses some bikes and they just get some dough from their insurance company or slam an extra $10 onto next year's bikes.

2012 Team DH will be $5,566.00.
  • 10 0
A thief is a thief. The same guy could be coming after your bike next.
  • 2 0
No offence to Dgatien, but if you can steal Team Norco bikes, you'd probably stick to bikes like that.
  • 1 0
No this is very costly for Norco dgatien. It will involve more than just getting paid out by their insuror. Crime like this hurts the company and the consumer as well, and should not be taken lightly.
  • 2 0
this will do absolutely nothing to norco's bottom line. Google them, they're not that small:

Norco Management Ltd is a private company categorized under Bicycles Manufacturers and located in Port Coquitlam, BC, Canada. Current estimates show this company has an annual revenue of 16,264,960 and employs a staff of approximately 110
  • 1 0
everyone should also know that all these bikes were in their bike boxes, not even built up yet just sitting in the storage waiting to be shipped out to stores, these bikes will not stay in the Lower Mainland, probably already on a boot headed over seas somewhere or south through the states, where they will be broken down and parted out, then the frames will be sold sometime next summer when they will be out on the market and hard to tell from the next....
  • 1 0
I agree with zeGG, I could see it being an inside job. I mean to know where the expensive bikes are right away, I'm sure they were all boxed up right.

It's jackasses like this that raise the prices of bikes for the rest of us Frown
  • 1 0
Hopefully these bastards can be caught by the police. Bike thieves are asses!!!!! If the cops can't catch them hopefully bike karma catches up with them and breaks the frame while doing a huge drop and they DIE!!!!!!!!! Harsh yes but I hate to hear stories of bike theft.
  • 3 1
Ya have to wonder if this was an inside job. Norco has a lot of bikes down there. to go and pick these bikes specific . they new what they were looking for.
  • 3 0
How did someone/more than one steal 17 bikes and no one noticed? would have to be a big ass vehicle to fit them into.
  • 1 1
could be 17 people who rode them off?
  • 1 0
maybe they had a trailor ......
  • 3 0
it cannot be that hard to track them down i mean come on ,
this is definitely not the first time these guys have stolen bikes , look up the guys with prevalent bike thief records, look up and see if any of them have a van. Look back to similar crimes from warehouse thefts in the past , what are the similarities, how did they get it in ? how recently had the bikes been moved . I bet a few dedicated days hustlin the streets, twisting a few arms and you could find out a lot.
Also to be able to get in and out they would need some "intelligence" on the warehouse and the presence of the bikes . Employees with criminal records , employees with vans , new employees , ex employees . If I had the time and lived in Van, I would really enjoy the hunt . Someone should take up the mission ! Feel bad for the company because not only will their insurance premiums go up a lot ( $50,000 for what i estimate their coverage would be would be a significant precentage increase, not to mention the fact they will definitely figure out some better security .
Unlucky norco , best of luck
  • 1 0
also , who has successfully sold an unusually large volume of parts off pinkbike in the past ? and doesnt have a legit reason to have that much gear . I would start right here .
  • 1 0
Apparently it's not that hard. The bike storage room in my residence in Kamloops got broken into once. Altogether about 15 bikes were stolen - Demo 9's, Team DH's, high end stuff - including my Norco. Could have used a truck hauling a big flat deck and strapped them all down. I'll tell you though... worst sight walking into a room usually filled with bikes and seeing every one over $1500 gone.

So you think thief will sell them right away? Hhahaha Great! They will wait till spring, then this model will be more popular and then sell them with changed serial numbers or dismount all parts and sell them one by one. i dont think thieves are that dumb... Beside this article alarmed bike community and they wont sell them now.

In Colorado you are legally allowed to defend your property with deadly force! So you walk in on them jacking your bike and you shoot them! Criminals should not have rights to sue the people they were victimizing!
  • 1 0
 props to colarado!
sadly they do over here, but i would rather everybody have rights than live under a totalitarian rule, which sadly it appears we are heading to! Frown
  • 3 0
Colorado... isn't that where some guy shot a little girl that walked across his front lawn?

The answer is 'yes'. I think she was TPing his neighbours house in a little school prank.
  • 3 0
a similar thing is happening here in Ontario, this guy attempted to steal some things from a store and the owner caught him and held him down till the police showed up. now the owner is being sued for assault for using force to hold the thief down.
  • 1 0
just to clarify the numbnut tea leaf tried to jack it from outside my house, whilst my i was on the phone in ma doorway, he had no chance but the sadder thing is that the guy was a crackhead! i actually feel sorry for him! that he was that desperate to try and jack ma bike with my back only half turned! he must have been in a very dark place!
  • 4 0
If by little girl you mean a few teenagers, and if by shot you mean held on the ground with a BB gun till the police got there, then yes. The teenagers had been TPing his house and he came out with a BB gun and held them there until the police and the parents arrived. Hardly a good case to bring up against gun control in the US. Just because people are allowed to own guns and defend themselves with them, does not mean that we are all going to walk around with spurs on our boots getting into duels in the streets.
  • 1 0
huh, u talking to me or someone else? pls clarify!
  • 1 0
@jizsplatt No, I was responding to iamamodel's comment about a little girl being shot in Colorado for trespassing. It seemed that he was trying to say that we should not have the right to defend ourselves and our property because someone will make a mistake and overreact. However, the incident he cited dealt with some teenagers that were vandalizing a man's house and he held them there with a BB gun and a baseball bat until the police got there. Not exactly the same as a little girl being shot by a man for walking on his lawn. Misinformation perpetuates the idea that the US is a violent country, and I hate seeing it!
  • 1 0
 ahhh i see! fair enough!
  • 1 0
crazyoldcoot, I wasn't referring to the incident you speak of, but another one, which most definitely did happen - I checked with my friends in Colorado yesterday.

My point was that defending a bike with deadly force is a little over the top, don't you think? I mean, not even your legal system would give the death penalty for a stolen bike, so why should an ordinary citizen who is untrained and unqualified to dish out the law end someone's life?

Without seeking such things out, I've come across the bodies of an entire family killed in a murder/suicide. I've seen gunshot victims. I've had someone threaten to shoot me dead. I've been to a few countries in my life, but all these things happened to me in only one country. Can you guess which one? Hint: you think this country is not violent.
  • 1 0
I agree that one should not take someone's life to defend something as insignificant as a bike. However, the fact that it is a possibility makes criminals less likely to try and steal your stuff. I have not heard of the case you are talking about, but it would seem that the man who shot the girl is at fault, not the law allowing him to defend his property. At some point people need to take responsibility for themselves and use some common sense. This includes not only the criminals that are thinking about victimizing someone, but also the ones that may be victimized. The laws of the land should not punish the ones who reasonably defend their property and their safety with force. Especially like Jizsplatt's case in England where he may now be sued by the criminal for reasonably defending his bike. Would I shoot someone who is trying to steal my bike? No way. But I would definitely threaten to shoot them. If they call my bluff, then I guess they needed it more than I did to risk their life.
  • 1 0
 Fairly and reasonably put.
  • 1 0
im gonna keep a close eye out for any of them. lots of people come up to the coast for riding and its such a small place that if there is one up here, il report it to athorities

my point is that its not the end of the world.
  • 1 1
ok, your right, it is not the end of the world, but the comment sounds like....'whatever' and some of us here [including myself] have been ripped off for our rides, and it's not really about Norco being insured, it's about the serious ripple effect this has on all of us: higher insurance rates from theft means higher bike prices, and many Norco customers not getting their new bike soon or at all now [ Norco cannot just snap their fingers and presto they have a whole new order of rides ] you have some idea that Norco is just another heartless money grabbing corporation that won't lose sleep over this and i can tell you, as much as they are trying to make money they still sponsor and work in many ways to help create the scene that you are enjoying...just saying, it's more than about insurance...nuff said.

My little brother just got his 250 last week at out LBS. He'll be riding this weekend in Victoria on a family vacation. Don't attack him please! He got his legit.
  • 1 0
im sure gregbuudda is trying to sell off a bunch of these
  • 1 0
Sorry to hear about that Velcocity, yeah these guys know what they are grabbing and will probably taken them someplace else in canada or the states to sell.
  • 1 2
I have no pity for Norco. Based on what dealers pay and what Norco likely marks up before they sell to the dealer the retail prices of the bikes are almost meaningless. Besides, what will they do it they're recovered? Fix them up and sell then to an unsuspecting dealer as a new bike?

i dont know why someone would wanna steal a bunch o gay 2011 norcos...
  • 2 1
Norco's aren't gay! This year just isn't the greatest for them. I love Norcos!!
  • 1 1
 actually I don't like 2011. 2009 was my favorite, empire 5!
  • 1 1
Ya I don't like 2011 either. The only bike I like (That looks nice) is the 125, and the 250. They could both use some more color, but here pretty nice. My favorite year was either 2009 or 2010. They both had nice, but they both had bad
  • 1 1
yeah color sucked for 2011 but you can't have it all
  • 1 1
 Yeah true true
  • 2 5
i would commit suicide if someone stole my bike...hope they catch those scums...
  • 3 1
Hey asshat, it doesn't matter if you like them or not. I can assure you they will not "go bust", and unfortunately thefts like this affect all of us. It drives up the prices of companies doing buisness, to stop this kinda crap. When they pay more we pay more. And besides hate Norco or not that hardtail is dead sexy.
