North Vancouver BC - Part two - Secrets and Sins

Mar 31, 2010
by Margus Riga
"Those who deserve to know, know." This was the response by a prominent North Shore figure when asked about the secret trails on the Shore. To someone who grew up riding The Shore, riding the usual suspects is like going out with Pamela Anderson, only you've been with Pamela for fifteen years, and though she still blows your mind, you've secretly started seeing another girl, Megan Fox. Who's new and exciting and not necessarily better than Pamela, just different in a really cool way.

Lots of pics and a few words that won't help you find the old trails inside,

Most so-called secret trails aren't really secrets, they're just really hard to find. Like "Digger", a sick old school skinny trail. Where is it? I couldn't tell you if I wanted to. Just happened upon it one day, and I haven't happened upon it for a long time now.

Before there were trail builders, there were loggers. Good luck finding one of these with a tree on top of it.

when will we see the videos?

It gives the Shore such a surreal aura, this magical misty place that some of us might find if we fall down a mountain bike version of a rabbit hole or something like that.

 lots of potential PODs here

NorthEasternDH - 99% of the pictures are of old trails gone by, videos like NSX1-9 is where you'll find a lot I'm sure, but you'll need a VCR to watch most of the videos from this era.

cool for sure but I always wonder who goes out and cleans up all the nails/fasteners when the trails are being 'reclaimed' by nature...imo it is littering and a contaminent in the forests. I am all for building and riding new stunts but it would be nice to see these things cleaned up by the builders. I have been trying to get our local builders and club to do just this, find old stunts/trails that aren't ridden anymore, cleaned up and removed from the bush but it seems like noone is interested. I suggested we catalogue all known sites in some sort of online page where it could be catalogued and have GPS locations of the sites so anyone could go online and find a stunt that needs cleaning up and go do it then check it off as completed and also have the ability of adding new sites and coordinates as they are found.

@rydindirty, a lot of the time people do come back and clean up their mess, what annoys me as a builder and a rider is the people who don't contribute more than five minutes work into a trail and go ride it like it's their own. People don't appreciate us builders, and the hard work, long walks, and heavy tools wehave to deal with. Trails should be left looking better than when you arrived, not shredded to he'll. As for the "littering" most fasteners are small enough to not be a problem. The dense floor of the shore rainforest would cover any protruding objects before they became an issue to hikers/riders/ and whatnot.

To add to that, most of the wood is cedar. That just returns to the forest floor. The nails are a shame. I've actually taken apart some of the really nice rungs, ladders and stringers from a mid-fromme trail that got chainsawed and left in pieces (ironically by the DNV) and transported them to a better life on another part of the mountain. So the cleanup work does happen. Foreign things like chickenwire, old tire rubber used to put traction on skinnies and ladder bridges aren't used that much anymore.

Sidenote - I've hiked old lines and 4 - 5 years after they've been disused - the greenery returns. 10 - 12 years later and its hard to find the line through the ferns, salal etc - the forest is amazing.

when i see amazing pics of spots like these is why I hope mtb never gets to the masses. it is alot like the surf scene to me. yeah, the comps are cool and seeing the best rip is pretty cool but it's about finding that secret spot hidden from the masses. They should be handed over from rider to rider like a family heirloom!

The comment about riding all the trails and THEN finding the gems is soooo true.
Great to see Smoke getting some props, and Tippie doing his thing. And Wade (?) chilling on top of some ladder awesomeness.
Not to sound like a skipping record, but absolutely ACE photo write-up!!

Jeeezus ona stick seraph! such a 'Grammar Queen'- evertime i see a comment by u, ur correctin somuns grammer...whut the hell r u ? a fricken anal retentive encyclopedia prof, or a biker...WHO GIVES A SHYITE ! Yer missin the point lad: yer too busy tryin ta be a 'cool critic', why not sell yer trike n join a spellin bee, or jist ride yer bike n shut up! [ i guess if you can't rip the shore here you can always rip those that do ] meantime, grow some bits, shred the shore, and then see if you still want to be supercalifrigeousexpedaleoshous, or actually say something positive and RELEVANT to the story...well, i think i'll go rip a secret trail while you apply for a job as a librarian.

We rode a secret trail a few weeks ago. we followed the builder down a road, turned right past a creek, up a really steep scary logging road. when we got to the access, we met two guys with guns shooting beer cans off a stump.boy were they suprised Eek

Its not hard finding secret stunts or trails, just look off to the side of the trail once in a while. Its also good to know where to look, alot of the time these things will be in the last place u expect
  • 1 0
I remember photos of my older friends ride stuff like that, and now they are reclaimed. Sick shots, hopefully those trails get some new life put in 'em

  • 1 0
Amazing article. You guys don't know how lucky you are over there. I gotta get saving to get there.
  • 2 4
"For those that 'know', know that most of these secret hits and pieces of trail were
really put up for one main purpose..." wow really? You can't even get the quote right, not to mention that it's simple grammar? People are "who," things are "that."
  • 1 1
Tell me seraph. Is it difficult sitting down to ride with that giant stick up one's ass?
  • 1 1
I wouldn't know, why don't you tell me?
  • 2 1
ok ok girls lets feel the love; seraph if you are 'actually' a mechanic, that's good, because as a far as correcting grammar, you would be a poor teacher: 'that' CAN be applied to a person or persons - one of many examples: that girl/ that boy/ that person/ etc. blah blah, but the real issue is that these forums are an opportunity to connect with other riders and share helpful info and your comment seemed to have no other purpose than to be sarcastic - even i can get 'pissy' but it's usually a reaction to comments like yours [that many of us are so tired of reading] so, lets get a little perspective: we are just riding bikes not getting rid of famine and wars, AND we are all so incredibly fortunate to have the freedom to have our health and rip trails [ just ask me, i'm so old i have to be tied on to my bike now just to do a rollover! ] so my point is: lets use these forums to be constructive, not pointlessly sarcastic...a point i myself forget from time to time...meantime i've got a tire to change and this vid was helpful to me. [ i can do double 8 ft gaps, drop the middle GLC at Whistler, can keep up w/ semi-pro DHrs [on trails i know] and can shred most trails without going around everything, but i have never changed a tire!!! and i couldn't care less cause that's why we've got guys like you to do it for us... but i guess unless i can get you to fit into my camelback when i pinch flat on Severed Dick on the Shore, i better learn :-) oh yeh guys, we all know, it is very difficult and painful to ride with a stick up the bazooney, so lets all kiss and make-up...hmmmm,maybe just high 5s all round!
  • 1 1
The context is wrong for the word "that" to be used, if you knew anything about grammar then you'd know that. Nice try though.
  • 1 1
seraph - you just keep being a clueless pedant. We'll ride our bikes and ogle the eye-candy Margus has shared. You just keep trying to bandy semantics and find the pluperfect subjunctive of "ogle" you English major with your arts degree wrenching bikes you.
  • 1 1
You missed the comma after grammer. The word "anything" does not really apply here, your are pointing out a specific context in which "that" is being used. In your first post, you included a comma inside your quotes for the word "who," and a period in the quotes for" that." Additionally, there should be a break after the word wow, really or maybe wow... really. Let us know when you come to the shore so we can school you for real... Nice try bro brah...
  • 1 0
I'm only talking about this one instance of the use of the word "that" instead if "who," so it's contextually incorrect.

Of course I put my commas and periods inside of quotes because that is the correct way to do it, just as you did in your last comment.

Did you even graduate from high school, or did you drop out to shred some sick gnar with your brohans instead?

Oh and leelau, I never said anything about having an English major, I'm just a grammar enthusiast.
