Northwave unveils a new shoe designed to celebrate its partnership with the Epic Series, the world's premier MTB stage race series. Capable of sustaining performance and comfort over long distances, the Rebel 3 will debut in the new black/amber yellow design at the 2023 ABSA Cape Epic where they will be worn by Andreas Seewald and Martin Stošek

In view of the start of the 2023 ABSA Cape Epic (March 19-26, 2023), the world’s most famous and acclaimed MTB stage race, Northwave is proud to present the Rebel 3 x Epic Series shoe, the model that celebrates Northwave’s partnership with the prestigious world mtb series that includes the Cape Epic.
Maybe it's the powerful and wild setting of South Africa, maybe it's the highly demanding challenge, maybe it's the race’s alluring appeal, starting with the name – it's impossible to think of the Cape Epic simply as a mountain bike stage race.

The Cape Epic is the iconic event of the Epic Series, the world's most prestigious mountain bike stage race series. Not only is it one of the most coveted victories by the biggest names in mountain biking, but it’s also a goal chased by every cyclist seeking an epic challenge, and it may even be one of the most meaningful experiences of their entire lives.

This is precisely why Northwave was founded more than 30 years ago: to accompany – first with its shoes and later with its technical apparel – cyclists and sportspeople facing challenges full of intrigue and meaning, whether it’s about winning or just achieving a goal. The Rebel 3 x Epic Series will make its race debut at Cape Epic, on the feet of the Canyon-Northwave Team duo of German racer, Andreas Seewald, a former mtb marathon world champion, and Czech racer, Martin Stošek.


READY FOR THE MOST EPIC CHALLENGES

Suited for both endurance-based marathon and high-intensity cross-country races, the Rebel 3 x Epic Series combines the stiffness of the XC12 carbon sole with the comfort necessary for pushing the pedals for hours at a time, thanks to the shoes’ Biomap Unibody upper and their perfect fit guaranteed by Northwave's patented X-Dial SLW3 dual closure.

The Biomap Unibody upper – the result of biomechanical studies – is seamless to avoid friction and interfering with pressure points. The upper is made from perforated microfiber to promote breathability even when things get hot – during the race and even beyond. Heat-welded TPU reinforcements at strategic points on the upper ensure the best synergy between protection, weight, and durability, even in an extreme challenge like the Cape Epic.
The upper’s neat and minimal design leaves room for personality, which is expressed by the Rebel 3 x Epic Series’ new special colour scheme, with black and amber yellow enhancing the Northwave and Epic Series logos.


A FAST AND PRECISE CLOSURE
The X-Dial SLW3 dual rotor offers a unique ultra-fast closure that’s unique to Northwave. Not only does Northwave's patented mechanism provide the most precise closure on the market, but it also allows step-by-step micrometric adjustment and full opening with the same button, while the knob allows for optimal closure and pressure distribution on the foot.

WHEN THE SOLE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE
The Carbon XC12 sole achieves a score of 12.0 in Northwave's stiffness index (out of a maximum of 14 for xc shoes) thanks to the full-carbon insert positioned in the pedal support area, and designed to ensure excellent power transfer, while the extra flex in the medial area makes it a perfect choice for long-distance racing. The sole's TPU inserts are strategically placed only where they’re needed to provide balance, traction, and outstanding durability without wasting a single ounce of weight.
