Opening Weekend Survey 2018: What People Are Riding at the Whistler Bike Park

May 25, 2018
by Pinkbike Staff

The Whistler Mountain Bike Park is once again open for the season. We once again set up for our (somewhat) annual Opening Weekend survey. The goal was to understand what people are running in the park this season and what gear is most popular in the lift line.

The usual rules apply, only we upped the ante this year and surveyed three hundred passersby for each category. Between 10am and 5pm Saturday we checked out frames, forks, shocks, brakes, derailleurs, tires, pedals, female to male ratio, helmets, and neck braces. New this year we added pads, outerwear, POV cameras, and goggles to the mix. And, of course, we also checked out everyone's favourite topic: wheel size.

Rental bikes and kids bikes were not included in our survey.

With a packed lift line on Saturday, we extended the count used in previous years in order to get a better look at the variety of bikes coming through the lineup. Each .33% now equals one bike in this year's stats.

Nothing says Whistler Bike Park like the brave souls running a) Cannondale Lefties 0.33% and b) Schwalbe Racing Ralphs 0.17%. Well played sir or madame...well played.

Still amazes me how few riders are running TRP brakes. Are they spec'd on any other bike besides YT?
  • 9 0
@yeti951SD: I think at this point they are still a lot like Hope- vastly aftermarket, rarely OEM. While impressive, this is also a one-day survey in a specific market, so you need to take that into account too.

@Trudeez: what about tubed vs tubeless? I thought tubed tires were long gone and went out with standard bb spacing.

@rrolly: As someone who works at a bike shop, I will never run tubeless.

Why? The amount of people who come through the shop with tires and rims covered in the unholy alliance that is sealant and mud/dirt, asking for flat repairs. Such a hassle to clean that out and remove the mud/sealant from the tire (Any bit of gunk between the bead of the tire and rim will lead to an improperly seated tire making the risk of flats in the future higher and/or a tire that doesn't hold air.).

The people generally either end up leaving having a) bought new tires and still running tubeless (Stupid expensive to do everytime you get a flat), or b) they just say "to hell with it" and end up running a tube.

I'll choose to avoid the hassle and run a tube from the start every time.

Racing Ralph how stupid the name actually makes a nice back tire for groomers.
  • 2 3
@SeanBikes1029: Agreed! MTBers seem to forget that Motocross and Enduro dirt bikes still use tubes. And they get trashed way harder than our 30-45lbs DH bikes.
  • 3 1
 @rpb10276:
Its a bit more complicated than that, trying to make that comparison. A rear mx tire like say a Dunlop MX52 120/80-19 is 11.2lbs in weight alone, so about a third the weight of most mtb's.
And even with the much much heavier and thicker rubber, punctures are still very common, and at the higher levels people tend to run a tire mousse to combat this. They are quite heavy and awkward to fit a tire over.
If you don't run a tire mousse you run a heavy duty tube that weighs 4lbs. (Michelin Off-Road Ultra Heavy Duty Inner Tube 4mm thick)

@gaz552: 20 years ago I bought a green Michelin tube that never died, I realized after a while it was a DH tube. Quite heavy but super resistant!
  • 5 0
@SeanBikes1029: As someone who's been working in a bike shop since the mid 90's and riding tubless since end of the 90's. I think you're doing it wrong.

Inform your customers how to deal with tubeless. Sell them tire plugs. (Shamurai is ingenious, although a bit overpriced). The only time I've punctured I couldn't fix on trail in the past 10 years, is either when I've smashed a rim or if I've run my tires so worn, that the side-walls get easily slashed (which is seldom).
  • 1 0
@wellsb: haha - I used to do that. OTB was a regular occurrence and I spent some $ on better geometry and saved a boatload of blood.
  • 2 0
@megatryn: Yea I agree, Ive had numerous issues with tubeless tires. They have 99% all been in regards to mounting them. As of late I recently was told a few tricks on that side, and now I have become way more adept at the overall tubeless setup.

Ive had days of 4-6 flats with tubed tires.

Tubeless? My AM bike hasnt been a problem. Ever. While riding.
DH bike? Wasnt a problem until my rear rim was so damaged it wouldn't seat properly.
As a side note, my current DH rear tire is getting near its end of life, and sure....it may have issues soon. But whatever, I have to replace it soon anyways....

To each their own I guess.

Me personally I have so many issues with tubes, its never been worth staying with them.

@internalfyre: What's the consensus on running tubes and sticking a bit of tyre sealant inside them through the valve? I've done this on my MX bike because I got a slow puncture and couldn't be bothered to remove the tyre (its a horrible job), and it's been fine for a whole season, hasn't lost any air.

It got me thinking, you could run a tube for convenience, but with some sealant to fill those annoying pinch punctures when they happen and keep you rolling? Might allow lower pressures too if you knew you had backup.

Thoughts?
  • 1 0
@Messy: ummmm you mean like we've always done before tubeless became a thing? Doesn't work for pinches though

You have not been educated in such ancient arts we see!

Guys, I own and ride 26 inch.
But the truth is that industry prefer guys who buy new shiny bikes. Look around, there is no ass'n'gay tire for 26 bikes, rim options are more an more limited etc. I wonder how is this possible if 40% of riders have 26 and they need probably more parts than guys with new bikes. But this is a fact, they want 26 die badly.

What are the most popular tires on 26" DH bikes these days??? Maxxis has a new 26x2.5WT DHF EXO out (I own one), so they obviously have the mold - THEY NEED A DH CASING / MaxxGrip VERSION OF THIS!!!

  • 2 1
@dglass: They expanded the sample size to 300 people and invested at least one person's time if not more gathering the data. Just sayin' it would be more interesting to 1. vary how the info is presented beyond straight lists of %'s - basic bar charts and pies would make the article more digestable and 2. a couple of simple stats like "we noticed that riders who commonly rode X also rode Y". As a numbers and data guy, I simply stated a fact, the article is interesting, but could be more interesting with a couple examples of how. PB puts a ton of effort into researching, writing and presenting some wicked content and I feel this one, as an article the readership anticipates, could be taken to another level. But apparently the PB community likes lists of numbers and disagrees that some insightful stats and visually appealing presentation would be more interesting. To each their own.
  • 2 1
@dglass: Some "interesting" bits that could be gleaned from this data:

1. How many riders mix/match brakes and drivetrain? Would be neat to see how many 1x riders are rockking lots of shimano stuff except drivetrain, see ho wbig they missed by taking so bloody long to bring a solid offering to the market.

2. Do people match kit? we have the brand of goggles, helmet, kit, etc. Would be interesting to see how many people are all matched and I'm sure the comment section would have fun with that one.

3. Who wears pads and no neckbrace? seems odd, doesn't it? protect ones sexy elbows but not take precaution against lifelong disability.

4. How many riders are "purists" - no goggles, no gloves, no armour?

5. Do trailbike riders or DH riders more likely to wear clips? Could be surprising answer.

Too bad the PB community struggles to see the diff between constructive feedback and trolling. Sucks that suggesting something could be better is misinterpreted as a slam on the article. And millennials get bent when we say their fragile... oh the irony.

So you're saying that some of the DH bikes had single crown forks? Unless my math is wrong (percentages are not my bag, admittedly), I see "DH bikes: 73%, Trail bikes: 27%" and "Dual crown: 67%, single crown: 33%". If all the DH bikes had dual crown forks, wouldn't those percentages be the same for both figures?
  • 56 0
Interesting. We'll dig into the numbers tomorrow to see if something's off, or if there are just that many people running 180mm single crowns and barspinning everything.

Rockshox Totems are single crown and they're a great park fork at 180mm.

@miguelcurto: Hardtails are just so much more fun and reliable.  @gibbon-on-an-orange: This data is heavily biased towards a small part of MTB that is gravity. Do this at an XC race, which dominates MTB, for a much different dataset.
  • 17 5
@brodoyouevenbike: True but seriously who cares about Lycra ?
  • 9 2
@gibbon-on-an-orange: I think this is due to the fact that a lot of people have a 'park bike' and then a good trail bike. The wheel size switch was only a couple years ago so I'm guessing 'the average' rider doesn't want to shell out 3k (and up) for a new bike just yet.

@brodoyouevenbike: lol Did you really just say gravity is a small part of MTB? Maybe if you didn't spend so much time weighing your bike and shaving you legs you could see What MTB is all about, and nobody cares what carbon and Lycra bs you weight weenies are running.

Way to glaze over that 26” tire stat...other then that this is by far the second coolest article next to the one that says something about a event calendar during the month of December.
  • 1 0
Also, @ the Cannondale Jekyll Lefty rider - left handed salute to you, you must be one damn sexy ass mo-fo... if I had of made it to opening weekend like I had planned to there could have been like, TWO of us!!

So 6% of people riding a DH bike with single crown fork?
  • 3 1
34% minion dhf.legendary tires but still would like to see a company outdo it that doesn’t blatantly rip off the tread pattern.

It's just because frank stacy designed all of them.

the DHF is basically a rip of of the earlier michelin comp 24....

It's a small brand with limited distribution against brands that literally have their own company store locations.

Interesting that the percentage of women actually fell compared to two years ago. By the videos being put out, I'd though that percentage would have been much higher.
  • 3 0
I wouldn't read anything into a 1% difference. It's basically stayed static. Judging by how popular the women's nights are in Whistler, there are more and more women riding the bike park, but it's not reflected in the opening day stats quite yet.
  • 1 0
@kingtut87: Very true that this data is only valid for opening day, and great to hear that participation in other ways is growing.

Four people (1.33%) rocking the Norco Fluid? Brave souls!

Would be interesting to know if they were on the new short travel version or the old school 160mm version. The 68 degree head angle wasn't ideal but it got the job done!

Just a thought, if all codes are counted as one, why aren't see and saint counted as one. Same for elixir and deore/slx/xt/xtr.

@troyleedesigns must be happy, crushing it in the helmet and softgoods category... pretty amazing to me.

Why does it say Avid Codes and there isn't a SRAM Code option? Codes are definitely not guides.

@yeti951SD: and some tastier bikes made of metal.
  • 3 3
And we don't ride park over here, just piss about in the woods. I'm a bit jelly we don't have anything like Whistler in the UK but the alps are probably better (not visited Whistler so can't comment).
  • 1 0
@fartymarty: all smaller but plenty of park type riding about, Black Mountains Cycle Centre, Tidworth Free Ride, IOW MTB centre will grow and is jump orientated, Chicksands then other centres that are more trail or DH but still have at least one more park type run BPW, Aston Hill. For a UK survey like this BPW would be the obvious choice.
  • 1 0
@StevieJB: Aren't there smaller bike parks around the UK? I remember all the advertisements in the back of Dirt mag for smaller lift access parks.

 Wyn Masters!!!
  • 5 0
@MSVF: Whistler uses them as rental bikes which means they get dumped into the local market for cheap at the end of the season. Also it is good brand repping as people like to buy what they know and will be a lot more likely to pick one up after having rented one.
