Red Bull Rampage is an amazing spectacle that showcases some of the top athletes in mountain biking, and their abilities, to the world. Each year that we return to Utah, we are so incredibly fortunate to be on hand to witness the greatness that comes from this particular competition and the history being made. Whether it is our first year at the event or we are celebrating a decade of returning annually to the desert, this event feels like coming home. There are familiar faces that you've worked with, ridden with, or have only seen that one other time in some dusty canyon, but it's a reunion nonetheless. These are our friends and of the many relationships that abound at Rampage, they range from admiring fan to best buddy.

This was an especially hard year, Paul Basagoitia's crash topped off a number of injuries that took athletes out of contention. Some had to make the decision for themselves and others didn't even have that option - it was heartbreaking regardless. To see our friends, our heroes, and our Rampage family members sustain some truly terrifying and painful injuries creates a feeling of helplessness that can dampen the excitement. It can sober our celebrations and force us to truly acknowledge that the entertainment we so enjoy is literally death-defying.

The serious side, the risk of this event, should not detract from the celebration of our winners or the elation of each competitor who set rubber to dirt this week. Instead, it should bolster our pride in, and support of, them. And so we would like to celebrate all of the riders who were out there putting it all on the line. Their ability to compete and their ambitions push our sport and give us a glimpse into a world unique to mountain biking. Without any of us, the riders would still be there, but without them, we would just be lost in an empty canyon.

Here's to the riders!

It s possible T-Mac took the crown for huck of the day... smooth mighty far and 100 home made.
Such a nice guy on the surface but within you have a deeply disturbed individual. Vink is very sick man and his line seals it.
It seems that the mighty Claw is the first athlete to perfectly dial in the chesty-cam set-up.

I agree and Totally worth the "Rampillage" see you next year Reece.

Nicholai is the f*cking man for riding down after that fall of his in qualies. (Even threw a flip in there to boot...)
Wish he would've made it further, it looked like he had an interesting line at the end of the course.

Also, he had a visor this time, maybe after that little slicer between his eyes he'll even have goggles next year!

yeah, the judging was spot on!!!

Should have got a wild card final entry just for that run. He's definitely on my "big things ahead" list.

For next year to ease everyones minds, I would love it if Red Bull stepped up with health insurance for all the riders. The best contest ever keeps on chugging!
  • 10 1
Yea the tricks keep progressing and the stakes get higher, which also means more people get injured. They really need to do something to reward the risk each rider takes.
  • 20 4
You cannot compete without insurance. Its never up to the event's title sponsor to provide insurance, for any sport for any competition. Keep it on topic which in this case, is celebrating the riders for doing what they do. In the purest form, they're given an opportunity to push themselves and mtbing to new heights, putting their lives on the line in the process. It was another incredible event because of the creativity and massive balls of the riders and I hope a speedy recovery to T-Mac and Paul Bas and anyone else who may have been injured while riding.

I would say the same for Rogatkin but as we all know, he's made of vibranium.

Word is Paul Bass can't feel his legs after his crash. Nice one Red Bull...
  • 50 3
Even keeping in mind that the judging was utter shite this year, I think we can all agree there was some incredible riding.
  • 4 0
Yep. I never cared for the judging. I just go to watch the riding!
  • 34 5
Can we also salute the Redbull Media Player, for being way less shitty?
  • 16 6
No. It was still way shitty. Couldn't get it to play properly (sound and video sync issues, skipping, etc.) for over an hour. When I finally did I was booted off once the live stream ended even though I hadn't even gotten to the second runs. So no. We can't salute it this year.
  • 14 7
I think it's more likely you have a shit connection than red bull equipment and set up being shit Smile
  • 4 1
I was using a ghost server at my school. I'm pretty sure I could download photoshop in a few minutes using their computers (engineering lab) and I still had issues with it skipping from "DVR" to live. And I was also booted once live feed ended
  • 4 4
Had mine running on the Xbox app and didn't miss a beat, occasional lag but very minimal
  • 20 1
Ok all credit to the Red Bull and the riders and well done to Norbs but seriously there was some dodgy judging
  • 19 0
These dudes put on a rad show. Nice article Pinkbike.
  • 21 3
Salute to the riders!! AND A BIG MIDDLE FINGER TO THE DRUGGED JUDGES!!!!!!
  • 17 0
Anyone know the status of Paul Bas?
  • 18 0
Googled all his social media accounts and no updates, did chance upon this idiocy from imbd, though..

"Paul Basagoitia is an actor, known for New World Disorder 10: Dust and Bones, NWD 9: Never Enough and Ultimate Rush."

An actor?? Dumbshits haha
  • 8 0
Prob an automated response, an imdb algorithm - he appears in movies, is listed as starring In, and therefore an actor.
  • 8 0
I am not there, but my friend is friends with Paul's girlfriend, she been told her that as of this morning, he does not have feeling in his feet and they are fearing possible paralyzation. So everyone may want to say a pray for a miraculous healing and recovery as this would be very sad.
  • 10 0
That is very upsetting to hear. Best wishes to him.
  • 11 0
Best wishes for paul and his family.
  • 6 0
 Look at zinks instagram post
  • 6 0
 "#f*ckrampage" -Cam Zink. Damn.
  • 8 3
And not a single article on him and his condition on pinkbike or even other websites... In my opinion this is scandalous, we don't care about the POV of Sorge or anything else, we want updates on Basagoitia's condition!
  • 2 3
All the info currently available: www.tetongravity.com/story/bike/paul-basagoitia-shatters-t12-undergoes-9-hour-surgery and instagram.com/p/89wpd_AnpD

Big ups to TGR for sharing that info, apparently Pinkbike prefers to stick to the rainbow road where nobody gets hurt and unicorns roam wild.
  • 4 1
Or maybe Pinkbike is acting like a legitimate news outlet and is not going to report on something as serious as this until they have facts... Rather than reporting unsubstantiated accounts...
  • 1 0
I would agree if incorrect information had not already been published. Pinkbike is not a legitimate news outlet, whether it likes it or not and publishing a correction on the word of a single source is just fine when the source is Cam Zink and he's publicly put his name on the information. Pinkbike's response ended up being both timely and classy, however I stand by my comment at the time of its posting when other outlets were reporting their correction to the misinformation relayed during the broadcast and Pinkbike was not.

 We salute you!

For those about to judge... Go home.
  • 8 0
i gotta give props to claudio as one of us mere mortals he did a great job (as always) with the course preview, also all the dig crews.
  • 3 0
I'm not sure I'd count an ex world cup racer as a mere mortal
  • 6 0
Most epic riding I have ever seen...I can't stop watching all the videos & if I had to judge they'd need a bigger f*cking podium b/c they all shredded that mountain. Congrats and thank you for one hell of a day!!
  • 5 0
Props to all the many volunteers from parking, security, diggers, bike valet, etc. suckin down the moon dust so we can get ftomt row seat to the mad risks the pros throw down. Thx to the red bull girls for those free icy cold RBs. cheers to the Zion afterparty!!
  • 9 1
No photos of Bizet? or the other riders? I am sure there are more than 40 riders who were in the event.
  • 4 0
Every one at rampage is a hero to me. this is the best week of the year and its all down to to the riders. could never realy explain how impressed I am every year they step it up. big thaks to the riders
  • 7 2
Just noticed that there are more photos of Aggy and Andreu before and after the final event. Not hating, I just want equal exposure among the riders.
  • 5 0
PB has a serious man crush on Aggy all the half of rampage coverage is Aggy's
  • 1 0
It's like they're subliminally pushing their favorite rider into PB readers. Aggy is a sick rider for sure but there were more runs better than what he did. But whatever, Rampage is over.
  • 4 0
I for one would like an update on all the injured riders, their injuries, their current medical condition and and donation pages they may have set up. All the other sports have updates, I want the grit
  • 4 0
It would have been so difficult to judge this even. Unbelievable! Get well soon Paul. Epic heli pilot. Props to the heli pilot. Manti!
  • 2 0
Big up to all the riders and builders. Thanks for doing it all for the love of the sport and not much else. Thanks to Redbull for starting and continuing this event but many changes are needed at this point. In my opinion they are holding the event back at this point. Different rules, judging, and prize purses are the first steps. I would love to see the fest series add a Utah location to their series.
  • 4 1
Great event but, overall the scoring is way too high. In an event with so many variables nobody should score 3.5 points away from perfection.
  • 13 4
 Except maybe Semenuk... Big Grin

Totally rad. There guys are an amazing inspiration. I watch them ride and it makes the 10 ft drop I'm working on look tiny. HUGE kudos for their efforts and Awesomeness.

Amazing event. Mad props to all these riders. Straight up beasts... ALL of them.
  • 1 3
Everyone. I don't know if this was appropriate to do or timely enough, but I have created a campaign to support Paul and the financial hardships this injury will place on himself and his family:

www.gofundme.com/supportforPaulB

Please support a fellow rider and his journey back to health and to the bike. If you can share this, or have any suggestions how to make it more effective, please get in contact with me. Paul has been a source of inspiration for almost a decade and we can step up and help him through this.

So, how many broken bones this year ?
  • 1 0
 Three that I know of.

Paul Bas' vertebra
Nico Vink's ankle
Someone's arm... maybe Reynolds?

Basagoitia is currently paralyzed, maybe permanently. Every rider's worst nightmare. :-(
  • 1 0
Sorry, it was Bizet with the broken arm.

Tom van Steenbergen pinched a nerve in his back... Tyler McCaul got a concussion...

I mean no disrespect to any of these riders, as they are doing incredible things on bikes, but are we pushing the limits too far with the evolution of Rampage? As much as I loved seeing this event and the brilliance of the riders, I was bloody terrified the whole time that someone would be SERIOUSLY hurt at the jumps and the lines these guys were taking. Every year the lines get bigger and bigger and with that, worse and more injuries. I really do think if its continues in this way someone is going to get killed. I've been watching "extreme" sports most of my life and it's hard to recall a mass event that is this insane. I know they are "professionals"," they know what they sign up for etc", but it seems like when they ask the riders what they want to accomplish from their runs they almost all say "make it down alive, in one piece etc". Is this event just too much??? I was showing some of the pics to co-workers who do not bike and they thought the pics were Photoshopped. "Yeah right, no one would jump/go down that". Is the "cost" not worth the "payout"?? Just my 2 cents worth.............Many prayers and positive thoughts to you Paul P. You are in the thoughts of many, heal soon,

Anyone know what the song was called for the intro of rampage?
  • 1 0
I'm not sure what song you mean, but you might wanna check out the album "black sky" by "sepalot"
They use those tracks all the time in their edits
  • 1 0
Do you know the song at minute 11 in the background?

Can someone tell me why none of the Redbull rescue crew have stretchers on deck?
  • 15 0
Theres is a huge med staff here with backboards everywhere.
  • 2 0
Thanks from the live stream I didn't see a single backboard come out for any of the riders who crashed that were injured.
  • 1 1
This might be a dumb question but why aren't there ever girls at Rampage?
  • 3 3
 They do not have balls.
  • 3 3
there are no female riders good enough to ride rampage.
