I know PBers don't care about XC, but it is surprising that only one man from Canada and one from the USA are competing. Is it a lack of interest or talent?
Mont Saint Anne and Snowshoe will have better numbers. It's just expensive for USA and Canadian riders to get overseas and there's not as many large MTB Trade teams based in the USA.. I mean I'm pretty sure Chloe Woodruff paid her way to get to Abstadt and Nove' Mesto based on the fact she was just riding in the Team USA kit and not her trade team kit.
It amazes me that in the top 30 Men there's hardly any North American representation, 1 for Canada and 0 for United States. I'd think that Canada and USA would have much stronger representation. Meanwhile France and Switzerland crush, could that just be because this is a European stop for the WC?
@chacou: little to no money for the USA riders as they dont have the UCI points for great call ups. The races here in the USA will offer them much larger prize purses. Add to that there is the fact that they wont be on a trade team, so they have to get selected by USA Cycling in order to even go plus they will have to pay all their own way to get there. Little reason to go. Sad but until there are more trade teams willing to send their squad to the WC's there wont be much in the way of USA representation. Gotta move to Europe if you want to race WC's.
Video games have killed the North American boys. In the "old days" boys would get together and ride their bikes outside, now they all want to get on their Xbox and play Fortnight. Lazy....
Could someone link me to an explanation of how the overall standings work? Albstadt was the first race of the UCI WC and in the elite mens race, Flueckiger won. How did Van der Poel come out on top? They don't have qualifiers with points like they have in UCI WC DH racing, do they? Is there somewhere else to gain points?
@cvoc: Ah, so those are those 125 points? Is that part of every WC stop? Half as many points as you get for the main XC race (125pt sprint, 250pt XC) is very considerable!
By winning the short track race on Friday, MVDP bagged 125 points (Flueckiger was 8th and got 55). Flueckiger gained 250 points by winning on Sunday (MVDP added 200 to his total by coming in second).
they have a short track race on Saturday to determine spots on the grid and there is also points involved and van der pole won that so put him in front of Mathias and that is also how Nino is 3rd in the standings
It's impossible to tell from one race. It could be that he's fallen off but I think there's a higher likelihood he just had a temporary setback, ie illness. If we have learned one thing from him, he doesn't let go easy. I expect to see him in top form in a week.
