The second day in the Pan Ams, training was held during the morning until 1pm and determined classification for the finals of the next day. The riders were eager to see their qualifying times; and many of them came through with mechanical problems or flat tires, so the anticipation for the final was high.

Hot ladies everywhere

In elite women, Mariana Salazar of El Salvador took first place, followed by Luana Oliveira (BRA) and Camilla Nogueira (ARG). Andrea Farias had mechanical problems, ending with all her parts available.

In junior men, Pedro Ferreira (BRA) won the qualifying with 2:05.518, followed by Junior Felix (BRA) and Carlos Alfaro (PER). Junior Felix's father was quite nervous as he knows that his child is one of the favorites to win the gold medal.

In elite men, the best latin rider at the moment, Marcelo Gutierrez (COL) takes first place in the overall standings with a time of 1:54.099, followed by Lucas Bertol and Wallace Miranda, both from Brazil. Marcelo was very quiet and 100% focused before his race. He knew that he had the pressure and just wanted to take revenge from last Pan Ams in Argentina where he was third.

This year, Mauricio Acuna (CHI), our best national rider, was unable to attend due to injury. He still made an appearance in a special kind of way.

At the end of the day, Bernardo "Mr. Whip" Cruz graciously invited everyone to session and see him throw down as only he knows how.

The day of the final, tension was clearly felt in the air; riders looked away from each other to plan their final run and hopefully to win the title of fastest rider on the continent.

I talked personally with Andrea Farias, who got a bicycle of a friend of ours to ride the final. Ending in 6th place was a geat accomplishment for her first year in elite women, being surpassed only by other more experienced riders. Luana Oliveira (BRA) got a flat tire just 500 meters from the end for what would be a frustrating 5th place and Camilla Nogueira (ARG) was unable to improve her time staying in 4th place. In a big effort Diana Margraff (ECU) snatched the second place to Bruna Ulrich (BRA), thereby obtaining a new Pan American podium. Finally the first place spot was snapped up by Mariana Salazar (ESA).

In junior men, Junior Felix and Pedro Ferreira, take the first and second place respectively, achieving a desired 1-2 to Brazil. Mathew Branney (USA) finally comes in third.

The end of elite men was very thrilling, as the times went down as each rider crossed the finish line. Mario Jarrin (ECU) ended up with 5th place and Wallace Miranda (BRA) in 4th place, unable to upgrade their qualifying time. An excited Markolf Berchtold ended up in third place, earning a new Pan American podium. The Brazilian legend holds a record 7 Pan American gold medals and 14 top 3 finishes. Lucas Bertol (BRA) would only be a few minutes in the hot seat because Marcelo Gutierrez came with an unbeatable cadence finishing in first place with a time of 1:53.304 aboard his Giant Trance (Yes, his XC bike.)

Brazil.. the only place on Earth were you can win a continental championship, with a XC mountain bike.. take a look again on Marcelo's bike! basically a enduro bike.. shame on us.. The track was flat.. everything.. EVERYTHING human built.. nothing natural.. everything done with Tractors.. you can see the beautiful and natural rockgarden..
Come on!! Brazil is not the best DH country in the world, but for real.. this one must be the worse track somebody could create (maybe the 4X track some weeks ago was worse)... pure crap.. I'm very happy the have a Championship this big around here.. and very sad to see this Xc track

Seems like a lot of people hating on recent races bc they are not gnar enough, but it looked liked a good turn out, a ton of chicks, some good sized jumps and Bikes..... can't be all that bad guys come on.

Is there a video or pictures of the 4x track?

If you don't need use 8" of travel or more, it's not a DH. Eclectic, sounds like gay. "Hey, stop the long travel bikes, eclectic guys just need 6"! Come on!
Make a XC race on a DH trail. Remember the ambulance... maybe 10 is good. It's hard! And sounds like DH!

Really guys, look for a helmet cam from the track! It is not downhill! The track was a slight slope to say the best... Pure pedaling from top to bottom... And here in Brazil we DO have some nice downhill tracks...

How many people turned likely has little to do with the track. If you want to keep getting good turnouts, The track has to deliver. Evidently this one did not. And alot of riders seem unsatisfied.

Pretty amped on the lady coverage, I'm not going to lie -- thanks for the in-depth recap of their race! It's so rad to see this sort of exposure for female DH. Thanks!!! Smile

I don't appreciate the pics of the chicks, I lived in Costa Rica for 8 years enjoying the brown skin, dreaming of Brazil and the goddesses there, then moved back to Canada and the pasty cara blancas gordas , and I know it's a run-on sentence let me be, dived back into biking so I would forget the beautiful women who loved guys with blue eyes, a bit of spanish, and coin enough in pocket for a beer or two, and now look at me, the safe refuge of Pinkbike has been invaded by latinas.

Give me a second to collect my breath.

And great race. Bitch all you want but you have no idea what it costs to ride in some of these countries. CR was way more expensive to buy bikes than Canada and they don't make the cash we do. I took my 01 Bullit there and I met a guy who had an 02 (this was 05). He said I doubled the Bullit population because he knew the importer . . . I met guys with serious skills on seriously shitty bikes.

saludos!
