Press Release: Pembree

In partnership with Rob Warner, former World Cup DH Winner, and Ride Concepts, PEMBREE are proud to launch the new Interlock System – The biggest advance in flat pedal technology since the traction pin.

After more than 12 months of factory visits and product testing, the patented Interlock system is available, thanks in no small part to a collaboration with Ride Concepts.

bigquotesThe metal membrane in the sole of the shoe created by Ride Concepts has allowed us to revolutionise pin positioning. The results were outstanding and beyond what we expected; A flatter pedal, more security, and it’s faster.PEMBREE founder Phil Law

Rob has always used flat pedals so was regarded as the ultimate development partner for this project.

bigquotesI’ve seen every part of a mountain bike change, but the one thing that hasn’t changed is the flat pedal. That is until now. The Interlock is a game changer.Rob Warner, 1996 World Cup round winner

I wear metal studded wading boots while riding my hardtail with flat pedals into fishing spots all the time in summer months. The grip is outstanding, Plus, you get the benefit throwing up trails of sparks while dragging a foot through corners. I've started most of the wildfires in Colorado the last few years doing this.

I was wearing micro-spikes on 5-10 Impact high shoes just the other day to mostly hike and a bit of bike up 1600' vertical, to ride my studded FS fat bike on glade ski trails that are closed for the season. I'll be hiking up again tomorrow morning. Micro-spikes are fully compatible with older Saint DH pedals!

@Philphun: Why not a lightweight aluminum crampon that fits OVER the whole pedal? On the sort of bulletproof day when a first fatbike descent of Tucks is going to be viable, Microspikes aren't going to cut it. #skidtheeast

@ryetoast: only three upvotes? Is no one on pinkbike familiar with the Shire?

 The Wind Tunnel!!!

They should have shown Rob testing in the wind tunnel

I wounded if they gained accesses to $pecialized for aerodynamic testing. This is truly a brilliant idea. I want these shoes/pedals - I’m into learning proper pedal placement.

"Fine, I'll do it, but I'm bringing my bloody e-bike!"

Someone should devise a leather strap that goes up and over the foot holding it onto the pedal. Could even have a metal or plastic 'cage' to keep the foot from sliding forward....

It's been done already I believe.Pedal Kits - Power Grips

As an Engineer with a BMX background, I can confirm that this pedal / shoe system will drastically reduce the wind resistance and vortices of turbulent air around the pedal pins. Clearly a much faster pedal.

We can truly call these clipless! And who couldn't trust Rob, even your moms and sisters are safe with him?

Ok so this is an April fools joke but it has just led me to think there may be something about this that can actually work. What if we had a flat pedal with a layer of soft rubber in the pedal and then put the pins in the shoe. Think about it, no you have ultimate traction for the hike a bikes up, and you also no longer turn your shins into hamburger if the pedal slips. Win win.

Ah shit, it is too. Well played Rob.
  • 1 0
They already make plastic pedals, why not take it one step further.
  • 1 0
It’s actually good point what if sole just had an area with slight concave where pedal would fit into

You'll ruin the floors everywhere you go. Coffee shops and restaurants will be thrilled.

I raced my first two cyclocross seasons in soccer cleats, with Lyotard pedals. I shaved down one or two of the cleats, and the shoes fit the pedals perfectly. They were relatively stiff, but I could jump on and off the bike easily, and run in them easily.

Clearly they had a BMX background when designing this absolutely necessary improvement in pedaling technology!

I like this, all these fools have been building pedals and shoes backwards. Next step: cnc sole with large openings for breathability and adjustable pins on both sides (so you can really lock your foot in the shoe) and stealth rubber pedals. I’m expecting to see it at next round in Fort Bill

That almost deserved an Oscar for the acting performance from everyone, first role and secondary actor also or at least an Emmy ,what an absolutely master piece :-))))))

So am I the only one with shredded shins that went to the Pembree website immediately? The aerodynamics piece made me LOL, but honestly, not having to worry if that last pedal slip would require stitches or not would be a game changer.

Nice April Fools joke - but it is a novel idea, especially for winter riding. They do make shoes with studs on them to walk on ice. Like how the guy hops on his bike with those studded shoes but he's just doing a normal bunny hop. Good one!

 Pin it or bin it.

I ran the CFD on these pedals and the Y-170 vortices are COMPLETELY gone! Your mates will be able to follow you so much closer now while filming you on the gopro!

April Fools and all, but a flat pedal made with a hunk of 5.10 rubber with a spiky shoe might just work. I worked in the bush in Alaska one summer and we all had caulk boots. Other than walking of smooth rock those things rocked. Grip the pedal and no more shredded shins.
  • 3 0
I know this is a joke, but seriously, no more shins getting eaten by spikes! this is actually gold!
  • 4 0
genius!! the weight savings, the aero savings. take my money!!
  • 1 0
see, the whole problem is shoes. I just go barefoot and let those pins really grip in. And the even more betterer part is I don't have to tie my shoes so I have 1.43 more minutes of riding each time!
  • 4 1
 Thank god they patented it!

Surely the gag is that they’re trying to convince us that Rob doesn’t really have a chauffeur.
  • 2 0
I prefer to just duct tape my feet to the pedals until it's time to stop.
  • 1 0
Lmao @theuselesstrials did it first in 2018!
You stole his idea!

The greatest idea I've seen lately. No more meat grinder shin injuries from all the pedal spikes. Smart thinking, Rob.
  • 1 0
For version 2, these really need integrated magnets to guide the pins into place.
  • 1 0
Love it....so stupid but you can almost convince yourself that this is a good idea...excellent!!
  • 1 0
A few seconds in I thought 'whaaaat no way what an Effin sh*t idea.......' then the April 1st concept hit home! Smile
  • 1 0
If pedals were rubber and the shoes were studded, this might actually work.
  • 1 0
I want these as I always end up with my feet pointing in weird directions when I use flats.
  • 1 0
Who heard interlock system and immediately thought Breathalyzer-operated bike?
  • 1 0
What happens when those pins are inevitably sheered off?
  • 5 0
…I don’t know if you’re joking or not, but just in case, it’s an April fools joke
  • 1 0
 Brilliant.... sign me up!!

I was buying it until you said wind tunnel.

Is this technology available for BMX?
  • 1 0
I love them, when can I get some?
  • 1 0
they had me untill they mentioned the wind tunnel lol
  • 1 0
Fantastic video, I needed that, lol Rob is the man
  • 1 0
Good enough for a world cup winner, good enough for me.
  • 1 0
You laugh now but i actually dont hate this idea
  • 1 0
they should do a magnetic version next?
  • 1 0
Very nearly plausible, until they started talking about wind tunnels!
  • 1 0
 Keep it pinned
=✊=| Never lift
  • 1 0
Someone just saved my shinbones Smile
  • 2 1
