DH

World Cup racers and Enduro World Series racers locked horns on Whistler's famously technical Garbanzo DH race course yesterday. Marcello Gutierrez would reign supreme for the third year running in the Pro Men's race while Claire Buchar would take the top step of the Pro Women's category for the second year running.

There s not much shade at the top of the Garbo chair but the elite of the pro women s field made use of every square inch of that shade.

Josh Carlson pumped only two extra PSI into his tires today-- just in case. no repeats desired of Sunday s stage five flat. It really was a fluke. I ve run those tires in the park all season same psi same trails same riding style and that was my first flat. So yeah only 2 extra psi.

About the Photographers

Dave Trumpore • Age: 35 • Years Shooting: 4
Dave spent the bulk of the past 17 years racing professionally before realizing that despite qualifying for the random World Cup final here and there, the next generation was just way too fast and way more talented. Upon hanging up his racing boots in 2010, it would be a few years until Dave picked up a camera and started shooting the odd race here and there as a way to stay in touch with all the friends he had made over the years, and the rest as they say is history. In just a few years time his photos have graced the pages of just about every MTB magazine and major media outlet, while his commercial client list includes a who's who of the cycling industry, and he is lucky enough to shoot regularly with some of the best riders on the planet. Currently at Pinkbike, Dave shoots the Downhill WC and the Enduro World Series as well as contributing to the occasional editorial story.

Colin Meagher • Age: 47 • Years Shooting: 19
Colin Meagher is professional photographer based in Hood River, OR. He started out shooting film, a quaint analog medium now threatened with extinction, before making the jump to digital in 2004. He documents a variety of outdoor adventure sports for a diverse folio of commercial and editorial clients, but his home base is firmly anchored to anything related to bicycle culture. If he’s not shooting bikes, Meagher can most likely be found spinning the roads or trails in and around Hood River, OR.

Paris Gore • Age: 23 • Years Shooting: 5
Based in Bellingham, Washington, Paris graduated from the Commercial Photography Program at Seattle Central and has pursued his passion of documenting the characters and culture of mountain biking. First as a rider, then a photographer, Paris has long studied the interplay of movement, light and landscape in the mountains. From behind the lens, he translates those stories for his audience through images crisp with authenticity. His work is routinely featured in major publications commercial ad campaigns. Shooting a wide variety of disciplines, Paris' work grasps the raw emotion in World Cup Downhill Racing to big mountain freeriding, trail riding and dirt jumping.

how does Barelli see through his goggles?
  • 63 1
Yeah, they don't look 100% transparent.
  • 11 0
Its long been known that peripheral vision is more sensitive then central vision. Yoann is taking advantage of this by blocking his central field of view and riding with just his peripheral which makes him able to react more quickly to the visual input of the trail. Everyone will be doing this within 6 months, guaranteed.

"this sticker is dangerous and inconvenient but i sure do love fig newtons!"

Good way to make a sponsor happy, even when you don't use their product. I personally never ride without my GE refrigerator.

Let's all remember this is a DH race. How bout something you need an actual DH bike for?
  • 9 1
Kovarak on a dh bike with 2nd and not in the wc.... I think rider skill and endurance and line choice is more important than bike setup
  • 3 0
Wolsky also rode a DH bike over his Nomad, it was down to personal preference I would assume.

Good to see Marcelo take the win he has been throwing down sweet qualifiers for the WC!
  • 10 3
Definitely nice to see the top step getting the same cash for both men and women!
  • 2 1
Well done by Crankworx being an industry leader in equal pay. Now it's time to get a title sponsor that steps it up. Those checks are missing a zero.

"Hey Dave, how many different angles do you think we can find on this same rock chute?"
" I dunno, Paris, but let's try for as many as we can!"

Marcelo was using a Reign!!!! Maybe he can enjoy some EWS in the near future!!
  • 4 1
Especially since he seems like he has the stamina thing down.
  • 1 3
 Was he though ?
  • 4 0
Look at the 6th last picture, you get a side view of the bike. Looks like a Reign to me.
  • 2 1
A 160 Pike on a Glory would be so awkward, I'd go as far to say un-ridable. Defo a Reign.
  • 2 0
O yeah he did , its impressive what the little bikes can do for sure
  • 11 1
And just when the bike industry was beginning to fool us that you need a carbon bike over $5k to go fast, Marcelo goes and pulls it off with an alu Reign 2 frame. Full bike, $3k off the shelf, and you have what the pro's use. Nice.
  • 2 3
Where do you see it's aluminum?
  • 3 0
The top tube swoops up on the alum. model
  • 2 4
Carbon one between my legs does the same thing. Check the side profile of alum and carbon. Nearly identical.
  • 5 2
They don't make the carbon one with those colours. That is black and turquoise, the colours of the 2015 Reign 2, not black and blue like the carbon ones Josh Carlson, Yoann Barelli etc ride. Also, as JSolman said, the up sweep on the top tube is on the alum model, the carbon version top tube goes straight into the seat tube.

Looks to be be black and blue... 2015 giant reign advanced team 0
  • 2 0
 He is actually on the.......
  • 2 0
Except that's a his Giant Glory, this year's simplified course was better suited to an Enduro bike so he ended up racing his Reign.
  • 2 0
I also have a Reign 2... It looks remarkably similar to Marcelo's one... instagram.com/trailfundnz

It's for sure aluminum frame but the parts are the same as the team bike. So at the end it's still one expensive ass bike
  • 1 0
 Haha, yeah, most likely!
  • 1 1
It's carbon! Look at giant slalom.
  • 3 0
So this was the same track as the EWS? How do the times compare between the winner in both races?
  • 1 0
The top section was the same, the bottom section went down different trails though.
  • 1 0
No not the same, some shared sections.
  • 4 1
Plenty-O-shade not being used under that decking.

Marcelo has "one" the Garbo DH. Come on PB.
