Eight laps. Eight laps at very high speed. The final XC Short Track of the season resembled Moonshiners outrunning the fuzz. Huge crowds turned out for the first of the XC races this weekend and cheered on their favorites. Nino Schurter took the win in what was a show of classic cunning and perfectly played tactics. Jenny Rissveds took yet another win in an amazing women's race. The perfect start to the final World Cup of the season.

The description that says "the pace was too fast for Avancini" is not accurate; he was on Nino's rear wheel at the start of the last lap when he went down at a sharp grassy turn and had to push his bike up a steep climb. Congrats to Nino on his first short track win!

Makes you wonder if the caption writer even watched the race.

I've noticed the captions on many photo epics frequently don't reflect what actually happened in a race.

Exactly. Avancini tried a totally different tactic this time and I'm sure he would've taken the win had crashed on that turn before the hill. Alternatively, the pace was actually really slow. First men's lap was slower than the womens'!!!

@Powderface: Guess that’s the trade-off for getting all this great content out to us so quickly. I’m fine with that. I just come to the comment section for clarification. Thanks to PB and thanks to the commenters.

“The pace was too fast” can mean, as you imply, that he got dropped.

“The pace was too fast” can also mean that he was gassed and made a stupid mistake that saw him drop from contention for the win.

The caption is accurate.

@UPBike: in fact that was great tactics by Nino.....put the pressure on at the right place and force errors on your competition.

Will upload the video of the wipe out that happened right in front of me.

Slight off camber, slightly off line at the end of the end of the turn, can’t quite tell but almost appears to tap the brake as well

@DMBXC: Like, couldn't be more right in front of you. Thanks for the share.

@BrambleLee: I think Avancini made an equipment mistake, using the "rear specific" Racing Ralph on the front instead of the the "front specific" Racing Ray. He lost his front end in a turn and went down.
  • 1 0
@PapaStone: that’s mostly marketing....... He probably wanted something faster than a Ray but not as slick as a Thunder Burt. I know of another team who use Racing Ray front and back for the wet.

Rissveds truly impressive performance from a almost grass track sampler to the top of the box! Well deserved excellent racing!

No, second place.

Anyone any idea why Jolanda dropped off so much, so quickly? Was she just gassed or did she have a spill/mechanical?

I was there and I'm still not sure myself. As one pb user mentioned, it seemed to be most noticeable at that steep hill dig.

Jolanda gassed herself after just a lap. She should ride the first group's wheel and coast for an attack in the last couple of laps. Oh wait, that's what Jenny did and she won the race.

Outstanding show by the American ladies. This must have been Lea Davison's best result in quite some time.

Curious to see how the ladies do in Cross season. Neff may not have done well this race but she's still a considerable force.

Who cares .... you can only win when you are at the startline .
