Photo Epic: If You Open, They Will Come - Whistmas 2021

Jun 1, 2021
by Clint Trahan

Five days ago, none of us knew when the Whistler Mountain Bike Park would open. The uncertainty of the expiring health order from BC Government put everyone in a waiting game. Five days later, the mountain returned to life. If the turnout today is any indication; the sport we all love is alive, healthy, and thriving. Despite an average of 45-60 mins waiting in line, you could feel that summer vibe coming off everyone now winter has passed. We are entering into a new, optimistically positive season... and it's gravity fed.

Whistmas is here.

...I wonder what the pass smells like at the end of the season...Who else puts their pass there

Ahh missing time with summer camp friends

Was there here is the deal

Trail crew killed it mountain was mint
- extend play being back is dope
- ticket sales guys killed it passed where super easy to get
- line up is completely f*cked
- the mask police are ridiculous, they expect you to stand in line for over a hour and not be able to drink water , yes you can’t drink while standing in line .
- one person chairs going up the lift

My advice to anyone wanting to go . Avoid the park till Garbo and Creekside open .

Next provincial health update is in 2 weeks

Completely rediculous that people are required to wear masks outdoors, even the US CDC (widely known for being WAY to cautious and political) have said that there aren’t any known cases of COVID contraction outdoors.

Bang on . This is so true.

@unrooted: don’t tread on me bro. Who cares...park is open.
  • 35 8
@unrooted: this is actually false. There have been multiple clusters from concerts recorded due to tight quarters, singing, etc. It is not common otherwise though.

People are forgetting that Canada is coming off of a major outbreak over the last few months so their restrictions and paranoia are understandable. While the US has seen declining cases for a while, several provinces in Canada were in full lockdown until a few weeks ago.

I worked at a ski mountain that was also run by big bad Vail Resorts and it was the same problems in the winter.

@salespunk: >> so their restrictions and paranoia are understandable

restrictions, yes but paranoia? These rules are supposed to be (1) science based and (2) managed by people who know what they're doing. Over the past year-plus I've realized it's often politically-motivated and they rarely know more than your average paranoid witch burner. Somehow we drifted from "protect the vulnerable from severe outcomes" to "zero covid cases", hence our current situation.

@plyawn: it is a lowest common denominator situation. The vocal minority is what gets heard complaining about mask rules, but the majority of people placated by their use. Any for profit business is going to lean towards satisfying the majority and not the minority.

@unrooted I cannot see the article you are referring to, but I think it is the one that talks about zero transmissions in casual open space encounters. This refers to walking by someone that is infected on the street, but does not consider 30+ minute constant exposure in outdoor areas. It is dishonest to say you can get infected by someone on the street, but it is also less than truthful to say that there isn't risk in certain outdoor activities. There are multiple clusters recorded from outdoor activities but zero from casual encounters. A lift line straddles between the two so I can see why they are enforcing mask rules there. Single person chairs make zero sense, but there are non scientific people coming up with rules to make non scientific people comfortable with paying money to stand in lift lines and get on chairlifts. That is how we end up in this Dr Suess world.

@salespunk: New info coming in from Victoria, Australia is people are getting a variant from casual encounters. Melbourne just went into lockdown again because one person caught it from a casual encounter (they were in a room next to someone, no other contact) in a quarantine hotel and brought it back to Melbourne. Now people are getting it from casual contacts with that person and the others they spread it too.

Whistler is a long way from Melbs, obviously, but there are super infectious variants out there. No idea how things are going in Canada, but they'd have to be aware of what's happening in places like Oz, seeing as we are pretty much warm Canadians.

 1. 2 singles can go up together, others choose not to
2. I don't think you know how annoying it is to have to continually tell people to put their mask back on and follow the damn rules - I don't care what the stats say, it's about respecting the rules and the people surrounding you (who may be feeling a bit apprehensive but happy that mask rules are still in place)
3. Line ups are fine now! I'll still happily wear a mask for an hour at a time if it means the park stays open.

@BorisBC35: hadn't heard about this new variant yet. That is crazy, is it the India variant that is causing this or something else?

Hahaha! That's my group on the first picture. Good ol' Nate was trying to ride singlespeed but his chain was too short, and then the tensioner broke. Still rode the fastest out of all of us. Nate's getting towed by Schad and I'm taking the high-line.

I got that Pfizer in one arm, J & J in the other arm, my Latin American wrestling mask on my melon and I’m a comin’ up to BC to handle some ESSENTIAL BIDDNESS!

Is that 45mins plus wait to get on each lift? Every time or just first thing?
Maybe I’ll stick to morzine

It was Les Gets opening last weekend and it was the busiest I've seen it - lift queues similar to the August peak. The weather was perfect but it also seems the popularity of the sport is growing and demand is going to remain high for a time to come...
  • 3 0
@ddmonkey: the whole PDS region is very well set up (I'm an annual visitor, not local), but there's a whole area of ski lifts not being used in summer, will extra demand lead to more trails?
  • 1 0
@AyJayDoubleyou: The trail building crews have been busy building some new features & lines in Les Gets, Morzine and Super M so yes to an extent. What is less likely is any additional lifts being opened, so I think we will have to get more used to queues for the lifts especially in peak times. Last August got crazy busy at times as many people holidayed in the mountains instead of going abroad. There is a trend growing there I think of people who used to only come to the mountains to ski now coming in summer too. E-Bikes are going to be massive in summer as well, they are game changer in the Alps for tourists who want to explore the mountains via the fire roads, not just lift assisted DH or Enduro.

Should've seen the lines opening weekend at Angel Fire. Usually you can ride right onto the chair but this year the line stretched a quarter mile up the hill.
  • 2 0
@ddmonkey: Always happy to see new trails, although this year is not looking likely for us Brits. Amazingly made it out last year, and was all really Covid-safe.
I once accidently went skiing in school holidays - that was a mistake never to be repeated.
  • 1 0
@AyJayDoubleyou: Ha ha yep! The numbers in winter peak weeks make summer look like nothing... its still winter that pays for the lifts in summer at the moment
  • 2 0
Yup. I went to Wis twice last year. Once it was raining all day and I walked on to the Fitz lift every lap because I guess 95% of the riders there are princesses. The other time had over 1.5 hour lineups mid week for the Fitz zone, and half of the Garbo trails were closed. I'll wait til restrictions are lifted and the lines start moving a bit faster again before giving it another shot this year.
  • 1 0
@ddmonkey: I was about to ask... in the eastern US our ski resorts charge around $110/day for a lift ticket, but a summer bike ticket is around $40. I guess bike tickets will need to increase in price to support the increased participation? I always thought ski tickets were just grossly overpriced. Maybe not, I'm not sure anymore...
  • 2 0
@ream720: can only speak as a tourist in europe, ski passes are around 300 euros for the week in the big resorts. mtb is about 100 in morzine, other smaller (fewer trails, just as big potential area) places are far cheaper, sometimes even free if you are paying for accomodation or campsite in town.

In the UK, 35 to 45 pounds per day for a van uplift bikepark
  • 1 0
@AyJayDoubleyou: Yeah skiing season pass for Portes Du Soleil is three times the price of the MTB season pass. 1000 vs 300 for the season approx.
  • 1 0
@ddmonkey: they must feel sorry for us. Price of bikes and all...
