Photo Epic: Juniors On A Good Day to Suffer - Leogang XC World Champs 2020

It's not like we didn't say it wasn't a proper track. Lots of rain and eMTB worlds turned it into a sludgefest. We can't rightly even say we know what happened in the Junior Men's race after the front of the pack over took the back of the pack and the plates were too muddy to read and the lead moto snapped its chain. It was however, exciting to watch and a solid preview of what's to come. Mona Mitterwallner from Austria and Lennart-Jan Krayer from Germany take away the rainbow stripes today.

Googling Aneta Novotna gives some seriously NSFW results. You've been warned.

wouldn't it have been better to put ebike worlds after so the course didn't get totally chewed up before the proper racing?

So they're allowed to give each other sweaty hugs and blow they're lungs out next to each other on the course, but have to wear masks on the podium.
  • 5 1
They will interact with other people than fellow racers when they go up and down to the podium.

@magnusc: Let them take it off at least for the photo.

@TheJD: I agree the mask on the podium looks mostly for show and to make a statement that everybody should be cautious. Therefor seeing racers hugging or shaking hands makes no sense, and I don’t know why they keep doing this. It sends the wrong signal.

My first rule of not getting sick with the flue or any other virus/bug, is to not touch my face. I think this also applies to the mask. If you keep touching the mask you might transfer the virus from your hands to the mask and then your face. Therefor leave it on. Do not take it on, off and on again.

Is this actually fun? As an Australian, this is completely foreign and looks miserable. I look at the photos of the bikes and am impressed that they actually work.

 no, its not

If you go into an absolute mudfest race with the right mindset, it can actually end up being quite fun. Some of my fondest memories are of races where in half of the compressions I was burying my wheels past the axles in mud. The turns are super drifty and the falls don't hurt too badly (for the most part). Looking at the repair bill after impacting all of the bearings with mud, on the other hand, is not great
