Photo Epic: Mont Sainte Anne XC World Cup 2022

This 2022 Cross Country World Cup season just keeps giving with another dramatic day of racing on the slopes of Mont Sainte Anne. The U23 races were won by familiar faces in Noëlle Buri and Martin Vidaurre Kossmann, both taking commanding win after some early battles. The real twist in the tale was mid-way through the women's race when a storm front passed through, unleashing a deluge on the track and turning things on their head. It was the perfect storm for Jolanda Neff though who, unsurprisingly, felt at home in the slick conditions and rode to her first World Cup win for four years. Mona Mitterwallner climbed up the rankings from deep in the back after a sprint with Haley Batten over second and third with the Austrian just sneaking ahead, Martina Berta and Haley Batten rounded out the podium places. The men were faced with a slick but drying track, it would be a hard race to read given the conditions but one man mastered them better than everyone. Titouan Carod took his first World Cup win with a brutally ferocious ride, finishing over a minute and a half ahead of his teammate Filippo Colombo who managed to outfox David Valero Serrano, Luca Braidot, Pierre De Froidmont and Nino Schurter in the final meters. Next up is the infamous World Championships in Les Gets before the World Cup finals in Val di Sole the following week, this epic 2022 World Cup season is quickly coming to a close.

3x questions for the armchair experts here.

- When is the UCI just going to allow a full bike swap in the tech zones like you can in CX? There's been so many times i've seen where this would help.

- Why do riders never carry at least 1x co2? I know they are all about weight but the previous 3 races i've seen multiple times where it would have been much faster for the rider to hit their tire with co2 then run their bike all the way to the tech zone. Think back 2 races with Rebbecca Mcconnell and her double flat. That 2nd one she was way way far away. A co2 can't weigh crap.

- How the hell were they running aspens on that course in the rain. I saw some thunder berts too.. WTF?

Bonus Question: How bad ass is Jolanda? Doing all that on semi slick bontrager whatever tires with only 60mm of rear travel.

I noticed some riders were carrying co2 at this race

hahah, i usually run with a full repair kit, but i have never won or even podiumed when i get any sort of flat, getting a flat is pretty much game over, it is time to have a chat and a laugh with the back markers. there needs to be a lot of alignments happening for a CO2 cannister to save a podiuming ride. on the other hand, maybe some riders do bring a CO2 cannister with them, it's just that you havent noticed.

The entire point of not allowing full bike swaps is to force the teams to use more durable equipment and make it easier for smaller teams to compete with them not having to supply 3+ bikes per rider.

Totally badass with a steep hta and only 100mm front. Trek's so behind but Jolo could send a unicycle.
  • 1 0
Perhaps riders are allowed one bike change and have to sit for 30 seconds.

I think a full bike change with zero penalties would be super cool. Make it happen!

“Most Grit” award has to go to Emily Batty. With all the crashes lately, her theme song should be ChumbaWumba’s “I get knocked down, but I get up again”. Add in Jennifer Jackson’s elbow, and you’ve got a seriously tough team there.

Two thumbs up for toughing it out.

I think this is the first time I’ve seen Nino running a recon race, at least on the front, instead of Aspens.
  • 2 0
I've ridden extensively with maxxis aspens... I wouldnt fancy riding them on that course during that heavy downpour..
  • 1 0
Even Nino has a Recon Race up front in the photos above. I can't recall the last time he rode anything but an Aspen, so you're in good company at least - he didn't want to ride an Aspen in those conditions either.

Does anyone know if Anne Terpstra actually did a wheel swap? She went from 3rd to 6th with no obvious crash (though the dirt was washing off quickly in those conditions are Keller showed), and Bart speculated during the broadcast that she may have done a wheel swap to restore traction. She seems to be on Aspens in an early photo above, so maybe that makes sense.

Does David Valero not run a dropper post, like, ever?
  • 1 1
I think Carot also did not use a dropper, he could barely get far back enough with the saddle in his stomach.
  • 3 0
@mrkkbb: I'm pretty sure Titouan's BMC uses the (very cool) proprietary integrated dropper. David, on the other hand... watching different race's coverages, seems like he always has like 1,000mm of seatpost when he goes down and off things. It's wild.
  • 1 0
Valero is running a dropper post, it's just hard to see in the shots above. Also a bit of an optical illusion, because when it is down it is still more seatpost showing than almost anyone else would have. Man is tall.
  • 2 0
@dougfs: I absolutely concede: here is a good shot of David's dropper for Mont Sainte Anne. Absolutely boggles my mind how LITTLE travel that post has for how big of a human he is. Probably speaks of his talents if he don't need mo' travel :-)

Also, from Snowshoe, scroll to very last image of the clean BH Lynx. Again, unreal how little travel.
