Photo Story: Exploring the Trails Around Calgary

Dec 13, 2019
by Eduard Dyck

The 2019 season consisted mainly of following the Norco Canadian Enduro Series and trying to keep a full-time job at Bowcycle to fund the lifestyle. Being new to Calgary it has been awesome to see the local riding scene thrive and so many great people stoked to ride bikes, build new trails and support the scene. MMBTS is the local mountain bike association and they have been working hard to grow the community and build new trails for everyone to enjoy.

During the cold winter months, it is also amazing to have a place to ride like B-line Indoor Bike Park. As a kid, I grew up dreaming of having access to an indoor park and it is now real. Stoked to be a part of the riding community here and excited to keep working with everyone to make Calgary a good place to ride bikes. In between trying to learn how to race I got to shoot some photos with some good friends and amazing photographers.

All of these photos were taken either in Calgary or the local riding spots in Canmore and Kananaskis. As much as racing was an amazing challenge, getting out for a ride and collecting photographs with friends has always been more fun. These photos were leftover shots from projects and just some fun rides along the way. Hope you enjoy!

A nice variety of great pix! Yeah, we're no Squamish/Whistler, but I often feel that the Calgary area riding scene doesn't get the respect it deserves, and it is getting better all the time. Can't tell from the screen if Golden-G is being serious, or not....
One minor quibble- MMBTS does great work, but we actually have 4 more or less local trail associations- add Calgary Mountain Bike Alliance, Greater Bragg Creek Trails Association, and Bow Valley Mountain Bike Alliance to that list.

I've never lived in a more friendly place for biking (lived in Calgary for 3 years). Everyone was super friendly and positive - probably a result of the winters IMO.

That rockface off Razor's edge is much gnarlier than it looks. The entrance isn't the smootest move there is! Great article!

The Edmonton scene was already great in summer 1995... riding he valley networks until dark after every shift. I’d like to see what they’re doing now...

 Yea Eddie! Killer pics!

The riding around Calgary is actually really good If you search. If some of the massive ski resorts would build bike parks the riding around Calgary would be as good as BC.

Totally missed the Fish Creek and Bragg Creek Trail networks... Great close in riding there.

True! Didn’t end up getting photos in the areas but do ride them often and they are great as well.

How long would it take the average person living in Calgary, lets say downtown, to get to these spots?
  • 1 0
45 minutes door to trailhead at Moose Mountain.

@pbarclay: I would have thought most days it would take someone 45 mins just to get out of the city from downtown.

@rebel12: if you take every bad way there is and then double back. In 6 years in Calgary I've never spent more than 25 minutes getting out of the city, maybe 1:15 getting to moose or Bragg on a bad construction day from downtown. Getting to fromme or cypress from downtown Vancouver at 5pm wouldn't be much different from my experience.

@kiddlivid: you are totally right about Vancouver. I used to live in Kits and trying to do post work laps can be tough with the traffic. Go when the traffic is lighter it's no problem. 20 mins.

Being able to do post work laps is my measure for determining if an area is actually local.
