Photo Story: Sea Otter Memories

by Matthew DeLorme

The Sea Otter Classic was supposed to this weekend. There will be no perusing of new bikes and parts, no oddities and random gadgets to ogle. Perhaps most heartbreaking is that there will be no Dual Slalom, which to many is the main event of Sea Otter. No sunburns and poison oak. It's funny the little things you remember with fondness, even when they can be rather irritating. So here's a little montage of shots from the last couple years down in Monterey for those of you feeling like there's a bit of an empty spot in your life this weekend.

That Ellsworth.... Has anybody actually ridden one in the last 5 years? Do they actually sell any bikes?

I live 5 miles for their HQ that specific model is obsolete, they did a limited run. But most of the people I know that ride them are employees. Most people in San Diego have a giant, Santa Cruz, intense, or yeti. But you do see it in the wild. I think Ive seen more Eminents in the wild than an Ellsworth.

@Happypanda1337: Remember 15 years ago when everyone was coveting their bikes? "Laser etched frames! 0 point suspension! Hand crafted!"

I still have and ride my 2003 Ellsworth Id. I know I am going against the curve, but I love Ellsworth bikes. Wish I had a few more past and present models.

I’m at Laguna Seca right now. Cant tell if any pictures of a totally different scene uploaded from my fone but will have content later including a deerskull and horns of a fairly fresh mtn lion kill. Looks like I’m the only one who made it to Siiic Otter. The flowers are pretty and smell nice.

Not sure why this story made me think of this but... Whatever happened to Utopia optics? They were everywhere for a minute.

Pit Viper figured out the equation of putting ridiculous safety glasses on everyone and cornered the market.

Always wanted a DeTomaso Pantera. Loved them since the first time I saw one.

Same here. Pantera's are like a Kardashian, they look better from behind.

 @Foes2001:

But they have Ford 351s which is cool, actually, but cmon, an RSR is a supercar
  • 2 1
@endlessblockades: no, rsr is a racecar.

@jaycubzz: They have been made streetable - see Canepa motorsports -and on the road they are not technically racecar. Like my friend with an old 911 said: The only bad thing about Porsches are the drivers.

@endlessblockades: still a racecar. street converted examples of old rsrs are exceptions, outiers.

RSR: racecar. GT2RS: supercar. street-converted RSR: neutered racecar.
huracan supertrofeo: racecar. Huracan performante: supercar.

actually calling an rsr a supercar is actually doing it a disservice. calling any racecar a supercar is a disservice to that racecar, as the racecar variant of most (if not all) streetcars will absolutely wreck the roadcar around a circuit, which, lets be honest, is the best metric of performance

@jaycubzz: OK buddy. I’ll take the L on this one. Lets just say that I left out the space between super and car. I’m not a Porsche ‘guy’ but I grew up near Laguna Seca watching almost every Can-Am and Camel GT race in my early youth from 908s to the 917/30 and even met Mark Donohue. No ‘racecar’ will ever replace that one - it ended an entire series and they will all be racEcars one day soon anyway.
Cheers
