Picture Of The Month - November

POD is a big part of Pinkbike.com, we can count on it being in the left hand corner of the site every day. I decided to take POD one step further and find out the POM, That's right Picture Of the Month.

Look inside for the top five POD's from November as well as the most viewed and fav'ed POD's!This is completely decided by the viewers, I have no more input into this than any of you. I used a simple equation, Views divided by Fav's.

But before we get to the POM, we will take a look at a few other standouts. Pinkbike.com has tons of visits everyday, which means if one of your photos are selected for POD thousands and thousands of people will see that picture. Here are the Top Pics from November:

Most Favorites

Every POD gets more favorites than most photos get views. This month figaro took the cake with over 1585 Fav's!

 1st picture was stolen (www.pinkbike.com/photo/3937612) and you guys still gave it credit in this article. This would have been the time to give the proper photographer credit!!!

 Disc Golf, NO need to go off and be rude, the info has been noted and the picture and original photographer are both noted now too. This is a submitted article by a regular user on the site and we all try our best to give proper credit, these things happen.

Also, rather amusingly, for all those haters that bitch about PODs not showing any skill or enough sick to the power of radness, the most popular photo this month showed somebody pushing their bike. Big Grin

Unless I understand that wrong, that means the more fav's a pic has, the lower the 'score' it gets (as it is being divided by a higher number)

Am i being dumb?

 precisely the first thing I thought, it should be the other way around... in my view if a picture is especially good, what makes it different in terms of viewer reaction is that it will get a lot of favs, therefore favs divided by views would be a much better proxy for picture quality as perceived bu the users Smile

but anyway, nice initiative!

 No offense but favs divided by views is still a horrible idea. What if I put a picture up and got ten of my friends to view and fav it? That would give me 10 for 10.

MULTIPLICATION is what should be used here for the following reasoning:

examples:
50,000 views*0 favs= 0 score (very famous, but nobody likes it- kinda like the world's fattest man or something like that)
1,000 views * 1,000 favs = 1,000,000 score (The picture isn't extremely famous but everyone who has seen it seems to love it- make this pod and its score will increase 1,000-fold- assuming that 32,000 people see it and fav it)
5,000 views * 100 favs = 500,000 score (Quite a few people have seen it, but not everyone loves it- could be a controversial pod)

 what if, every month, the top 5 faved pics are rounded up for a final vote by all pinkbikers!

 The picture that got POD on November 1st is more likely to have more more faves than the POD from November 30th.

Well he only chooses from the PODs to decide a winner, if i am correct. This wold mean it would have may views becuase it is on the homepage... but i do agree that favs/views isnt a geat idea and we should use a different system perhaps...

 oh ya, I completely forgot about that.

Views/favs is only good imo if there are huge fluctuations in the traffic of users that visit pinkbike. (example: if 1000,000 people visit in June and 500,000 people visit the site in July- it should be reasonable that any pods in June will get twice as many views and twice as many favs on average- resulting in a score for favs*views that is 4 times higher than July's PODs, even though the quality of the pictures is the same.)

 yep, that would be a problem too. And even if those fluctuations are not too significant, another problem would be that PODs are not elected all at the same time, some at the beginning of the month, some at the end, resulting in different exposure...

Sure there is a way to go around all these problems, but I'm definitely not in the mood to think about it right now... some other day I might give it a thought Razz

 maybe the POM should be from th prevous month, so the picturs can get more exposure. Sure, the ictures a he beginnig of he month have an advantage, butat least this way it will be more fair. EG. the November POM should be picked from the October PODs. It still wont be equal but at least the everone will have a fair chance. But on the flip-side if you did an equation to decide POM, it wouldnt matter as much if a picture didnt get as may views. For Example---The POD on Nov. 1st have 10000 views, with 400 faves, or the pic at Nov. 30th with 1000, and 40 faves----both thes pics would be equal

 okay i think i have an equation which may work... (The Views)Divided by (The difference between the views and the faves)x100 .......

Views "divided by"(views - favs)x100 = picture score>

for example--- November #1 POM would be 29400-1399 = 28001

29400 "divided by" 28001 = 1.0499625 x100 = 104.99625

so the Novmber #1 picture would score (104.99625)

im pretty sure this would work. it would mean that the more people favourie a pic, the score would inrease...

 this would mean the second place pic would have a score of 104.17065 third place- 104.07141 fourth- 103.99892 fifth- 103.97841

 oryou could use the equation and multiply it by more than 100, to make the numbers more round.

 I think its a really great idea - POD is already an awesome way of supporting all our mates who take photographs and POM just refreshes that point!

 Yes Mr. Jason!! POM seems to be whats been missing. Thats definitly the right next step that PinkBike should take. Keep POM comming every month!! And a VOM too!! Think about it. BTW.. plese notice what user Danstar10 had commented. You can divide views by Fav's, but dont forget that the lowest result wins!! Not the highest. PROPS !!

 I second this idea. First you get to see the best pic of the day and then later, in the end of the month, you get another chance to pick your favorites... Smile

 yes, this should be done every month, fantastic. maybe a POY as well, with a round up the creme de la creme, perhaps with a prize to the year's top picture?!
