Slopestyle-Freeride Event of the Year Winner

Cruz FEST

Choosing the premier slopestyle or freeride event of 2015 turned out to be as difficult a task as judging one would have been. The addition of Crankworx New Zeeland to Crankworx Les 2 Alps and Crankworx Whistler created an FMB' trifecta that set the FMB tour afire - and it appeared in the early running that a slopestyle victory was assured. Brandon Semenuk's mastery of the Joyride course propelled Whistler Crankworx into the hot seat. Then, there was the majestic Suzuki Nine Knights, stages in in Livigno, Italy, where Nicholi Rogatkin launched his massive Cashroll. In the final stretch, a dark horse out-sprinted the heavy hitters. Cruz Fest had it all: style, hugeness, camaraderie, and the vibe that forged slopestyle and freeride into a brotherhood of super-athletes.

Cruz FEST

It wasn't the biggest FEST of the year. That would have been Nico Vink's massive Loose FEST. The invitational Cruz FEST contest was masterminded by Kyle Jameson, Ryan "R-Dog" Howard, and Jeff Herbertson, who obtained permission to craft a stunning series of lines through the oak trees on the Swan Family ranch near Santa Cruz, California. Sadly, no spectators were allowed, but the purpose of the FEST series is to give competitors an environment where they can push beyond their limits and compete with their peers without the weight of corporate suits and the pressure of make-it-happen media moguls. Riders went huge and were tricking everything. Seeing is believing. If the opening sequence of the following highlight video did not hook you, if you didn't want to get on your bike after the credits rolled, then you probably logged onto PB by mistake.

well last bits with Andrew, no words......... !!
  • 21 3
Can we PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE televise the fest series??

I realize the riders want the atmosphere at the series to be relaxed, but I feel like there has to be a way to let us views be a part of it, without sacrificing the chill-ness

Even just some go pros left live streaming pointed at the jumps would be good, if they keep them pointed the jumps they can all still get stoned off camera.
  • 7 0
screw tv. just stream it on the interwebs. wouldn't be hard.
  • 6 1
Live feeds and stuff would kill the spirit of FEST- the whole point is that the best sh*t goes down when these guys are riding without being told when to do it. This style of edit is amazing because of the same ethos is followed with the filming- let Clay Porter (I believe) and his friends play and this is what you get. You wouldn't get this with a few guys filming live. The only thing better would be to be there in person.

@gavlaa totally right man, we don't need livestreams
  • 1 0
I'm not saying to change the event style, that is some you fabricated, all I'm saying is leave a few unmanned go pros streaming all day as they go about their jam style format
  • 1 0
I know what you're saying- but i think having even unmanned cameras would change the spirit of things. Kind of reminds me of big brother or something. I think the riders would prefer a little privacy sometimes to just shred with their mates without the world being able to watch. I'd prefer edits like this at the end of it when someone who knows what they're doing has spent days sorting footage to filter through and deliver the finest bits.

How the f*ck Andreu survived that first miss I'll never know.. The guys a beast!
  • 6 1
May not be the absolute craziest trick ever, but Andreu's last jump is just a big batch of spinning-flipping-flailing greatness. I give him the Best Trick ...of the Slopestyle-Freeride Event of the Year... of the Year, award.

Crazy like a little kid. Man must love flying. I could imagine being so pumped and going nuts huge and busting crazy style tricks and then forgetting for a moment...shit I still gotta land...BAM, get up...holy shit that was cool...wtf just happened? Yeah...I could imagine it, only. One of the sickest riders out there.
  • 2 0
I wonder if there is a name for that trick? "I'm gonna throw....wait a second, f*ck that stick it" Nailed it beast mode!

I do agree with this choice- but I do think the late Kelly McGarry should get a shout out for the course he put together with Tom Hey at Rotorua. The biggest surprise of the FMB calendar and was as close as we got to the Berreclaw Invitational.

I was lucky enough to attend and shoot this event. The riding was off the charts...Props to the Fest crew. I just didn't know that Kelly McGarry's home country of New Zealand had been renamed ...New Zeeland?
  • 6 5
If you want a chill relaxed environment stop riding professionally. This is what you get paid big buck to do. Am I right or am I right
