Pinkbike Poll: What Type of Bike Would You Add to Your Quiver?

Oct 18, 2019

Trying to remove the term 'quiver killer' from the mountain bike vernacular is like playing an endless game of Wack-a-Mole. It'll disappear for a few months, only to resurface in a not-so-cleverly worded press release touting the latest and greatest carbon wonder bike. As mountain bikers, we all know that there's never going to be a single bike that can magically do everything without any downsides. That's why many of us have more than one bike, or at least harbor dreams of adding another pedal-powered machine to the fleet.

Now, it may no longer be necessary to own a dedicated cross-country bike, a trail bike, and a downhill bike – there are plenty of genre-blurring machines out there, but if money (or garage / shed / bedroom space) was no object, wouldn't it be nice to add a fully decked out DH sled, or an ultralight XC race whippet to the lineup? Or what about a classy steel dirt jumper, or maybe an old school klunker, coaster brake and all?

photo
There's always room for one more...

Personally, my mind starts drifting a little bit when the temperature drops and the leaves start to fall – that's the time of the year where I'll start thinking about building up a winter hardtail, or maybe getting one of those skinny wheeled bikes with knobby tires and trying my hand at a cyclocross race or two. That's how it starts, and before long I'll find myself getting pulled down all sorts of internet rabbit holes in search of my next project.

We all know that the proper number of bikes equals n+1, so if you could add one more steed to the shed, what would it be?

What kinds of bikes do you currently have?

Select all that apply.

What kind of bike do you want to acquire next?

 No fat bikes?
  • 135 5
 No fat bikes.
  • 17 1
No FAT bikes? Trials bikes, but no Fat bikes, makes sense.
  • 32 34
Does tire width really define a bike? I figured fat bike owners could select the category their bike fits into.
  • 11 0
Yeah. I am up to 5 bikes, including a fat bike for riding on the beach and in the snow. Wasn't able to flex on that one.
  • 54 1
@mikekazimer: yepp, a bike with 5" studded tires and pogies is not simply a rigid mountain bike. It's a purpose built machine that spends 7 months a year stashed in the basement.
  • 5 0
@mikekazimer: in the rocky mountains in Canada it does
  • 24 0
@mikekazimer: I think they do. Is there DH fat bike, enduro fat bike, dirt jump fat bike? I think most Fat bike identify themselves as Fat Bike, kinda adventure/ Bikepacking.. There are specific fat bike brands, it's definitively it's own niche. Much more defined than XC/Trail of Trail/Enduro. It's much easier to define a fat bike as a bike with >3" tires than other categories.
  • 5 0
Come to my town, it's full of them at the weekend.
  • 5 3
 @mikekazimer:

Can we get clearer definition on XC vs. Trail vs. Enduro?
  • 2 3
@MikeyMT: it would roughly look like this XC: less than 120mm Trail: 120mm-160mm Enduro: more than 160mm
  • 1 0
@jpcars10s: or none in Canada... Wink
  • 3 1
@mikekazimer: Cock and monster cock are different categories on size alone, or so i'm told.
  • 2 0
@Dropthedebt: weird, does it even snow in wales?
  • 3 2
@matt-15: what about mixed travel...SB150...I'm more confused now.
  • 2 1
@MikeyMT: when people say the travel a bike has, they usually mean the rear travel, as front travel is determined by the fork. I have a Giant Trance with 150mm fork and 140mm rear, and would call my bike a 140mm trail bike. My numbers I gave were for 27.5" wheels, for 29" you can drop all those numbers by 10mm, thus the SB150 would be an enduro bike by my guess

@mikekazimer: Yes try to ride a 2.35 tire in unpacked snow. My fat bike is quickly replacing my indoor trainer..so yes unique category if you live in an area where it snows..don't get me wrong they are fun all year. I selected other for my fat...
  • 1 0
@Fastfish11: Don't blame them, it's not their fault they're fat, it's the way they were made.
  • 1 0
@mikekazimer: It does in all the races I've entered (gravel, mtb).
  • 1 0
@matt-15: lol I know. But homie says 170 is Enduro bike. SB150 is for sure an enduro bike. The travel is not the only variable to consider.

Maybe the question should be - does it matter what we call it?
  • 1 0
@mtnfun2: are they really that great in the snow? I figured it was just for the plush ride with fat ass tires.
  • 1 0
@jpcars10s: Not if you have two sets of tires.
My fat bike is for mud and snow but it's also a great bike to take to the beach or use as a back up bike.
I would like to get a set of 40mm 29er wheels and use it for bike packing too.
  • 2 0
@jpcars10s: I (along with many of my fellow midwest riders) ride mine year round, put more miles on it than my trail hardtail. snow in the winter, beaches in summer, and single track year round. They're incredibly versatile for the 75% of riders who don't live near mountains or black diamond trails. /end anecdotal evidence.
  • 1 0
@mikekazimer: yeah, fat bikes need their own category. I bet most of the other responses are fat bikes. Not a huge market, but still has its loyal fan base.

@matt-15: I threw a 170 fork on my trance. The lines are blurred now. Super Trance is born.
  • 1 0
@milken: was thinking of getting a 160mm fork and a 55mm stroke coil shock (stock is 52.5mm) to make it a bit more park friendly
  • 1 0
That would be a sweet setup. Love my #supertrance @matt-15:
  • 2 0
@milken: what fork and shock do you run? I was thinking of saving up for a Pike/ Lyrik Ultimate and Super Deluxe Ultimate. I know at 160mm the Lyrik would probably be the better choice, but I love the silver of the Pike Ultimate (I would get the Lyrik in black if I were to go for that)
  • 1 0
I have a DVO Diamond in the front and DVO Topaz in the rear. Love the upgrade from the base Fox DPS shock and Fox Rhythm fork. But, alas I just bought a Ripmo for spring! I think the silver of the pike is super dope too. @matt-15:
  • 1 0
@milken: DVO was one other I was considering, however the bike shop I work at doesn't carry them so I can't get employee pricing on it, which I can with RS

Also with the Pike I can shorten it back to the stock 150 if I wanted to, whereas I believe 160 is the shortest you can get a Lyrik

I am currently trying to go from the N+1 rule to N-1. So it would make more sense to ask me which bike i am going to sell.
  • 72 2
Let`s be honest, selling bikes is just some lie you tell your wife to make her happy...
  • 11 1
@Caiokv: So true. There is the N+1 rule but it is limited by the S-1 rule (separation - 1). The only reason to sell 1 bike is to add a new one (-1 +1).
  • 7 1
 @lRaphl:
Glad my girlfriend lives by the n+1 rule, too so she can’t force the s-1 rule. I am only restricted by the size of the basement.
  • 10 0
@lRaphl: N=N+1, but the limits are 1 (because noone wants zero bikes) and D. Where D is the number of bikes which would lead to divorce.
  • 2 0
 @lukesky: lucky bastard !
  • 4 0
@lRaphl: I like to call S-1 the spousal limit.
  • 7 0
"So it would make more sense to ask me which bike i am going to sell."

First my wifes bike...
  • 2 0
I keep telling myself one will go, but the hardtail is a custom made just for me, the Enduro bike my beloved buddy and the old bike in the corner is the one my grandfather gave me twenty-ish years ago. I'm fairly sure I would reflexively murder anyone who tried to take one of them away, even with permission.
  • 2 0
The problem with having multiple bikes is, now we have to buy parts for N+ bikes, and we have to work more to have N+ bikes which leads to less time for riding.

Currently own two bikes and trying to figure out a way yo getting back to owning only one bike and using the money saved to take more biking trips.
  • 5 0
 Yep, same.

N+1 is hyped up. Most bikes are capable of doing more than what people give them credit.
  • 2 0
@phops: Or said a different way, most people aren't good enough to find the limits of their bike
  • 1 0
@lukesky: Does she live by the N+1 rule or only in relation to bicycle purchasing? Because if it's the former are you N or are you +1?
  • 1 0
@Caiokv: Never had a partner that I'll let get away with dictating my hobbies, same as me with theirs. The issue I have is my landlord, I'm only allowed four bikes in the flat at one time. Currently have FS trail, FS Enduro, trail HT and a gravel/commuter bike. The HT is next to be replaced with a 29er trail HT, preferably something in steel, the old HT will be converted to a commuter bike and the gravel bike will be sold. That way the landlord is happy! Oh, I also have 3 old frames in storage at my parent's house...

Ebikes are going to slowly take over PB.. Soon its going to have to splint into pink(ie)bike.com and regular pinkbike.
  • 45 41
Absolutly. It's another sport. Like motorbikes.
  • 30 9
Everyday I feel like I have less and less in common with the mtb scene
  • 38 14
@IluvRIDING: eh.. Have a moto, have a mtb, and have an Ebike.. It's much closer to the mtb than the moto.
  • 37 15
You shouldn't be afraid of e-bikes. Sometimes i have a feeling that I live in e-bike capital of the world. When I moved to Switzerland 7, 8 years ago almost all ebikes here were commuter bikes ridden by older people (more ladies than men).
Now, you can't go for a ride without meet at least one group of e-mtbs. And that's ok. Woods are big enough for both of us and I can't see one single downside of having this new breed of bikes around us.
  • 17 0
@pakleni: I don't think most people opposed to ebikes are afraid of them, they just don't like them.

What I've seen is the complete split of riders, they're truly morphing into something else
"ohh I want to ride more", maybe they are now riding more but with other completely different people.
More or like when you go out at night; you segregate on what you have in common and can relate; weed, alcohol, coke,
or none. But they can mix together for long.

@swan3609: It's a different sport. Maybe it seems similar to you, as an amateur rider. But there one very significant difference which makes it another sport: YOU CAN'T RACE ON E-BIKES. Because it is unfair. Even if all riders had the same power from the motor (can you trust that?). It would give a significant advantage to lighter riders. And it's impossible to compensate becuse if you did, the heavier riders would have an advantage on flat sections. ...I understand, you don't race xc with all sorts of bikes but you could. Not with e-bikes. The races that have been done so far are a joke. Everybody knows that. Maybe on a DH course it wouldn't matter. But what would be the point of that?
  • 14 5
@IluvRIDING: definitely not an amature.. But I am definitely a washed up semipro DH racer. I won't even touch the ebike racing comments because that hasn't been figured out yet. But my Turbo Levo definitely rides way closer to my Enduro than it does to my CRF. I will say it's a unique experience from both, but it's way closer to the enduro, but actually fun to ride uphill instead of the usual slog.
  • 10 9
@swan3609: Wow and you guys accuse the anti-ebike people of being elitists!
  • 10 3
@IluvRIDING: Your point about weight is completely off base. It's the same as regular mountain bikes. A heavier Rider is not going to get up a hill as fast as a skinny little xc racer on a regular bike either.
  • 7 5
@highfivenwhiteguy: was kinda tounge in cheek comment, but it's kinda true. It's a bummer that the price of entry is so high because it definitely keeps people off them. I'd imagine that if many of these E haters actually spent time on one in a situation where they make sense, they would be hard pressed to not enjoy themselves.
  • 3 5
@highfivenwhiteguy: i hope thats sarcasm. @iluvriding just assumed , in what seemed condescending and elitist, that @swan was an amateur. Then boldly claims you cant race ebikes because itll never be an even playing field. Fkn numpty flexing. Im opptunistic the E ews have some courses in store thatll change that to close to what the standard is for a lighter weight endurance focused enduro mtber would be. If not initially that is there goal through course design.
  • 5 2
@swan3609: Fair enough. From what I can see the price of an ebike really isn't that much worse than a normal medium-high range trail/enduro bike, I would be very surprised if the price is what is keeping a large number of people from buying them. I would be even more surprised if a main reason people dislike ebikes is because of the price! I think that has more to do with other issues like trail access and the changing culture of mountain biking.
  • 6 2
@won-sean-animal-chin: Oh great, you again with the illegible comments. That isn't sarcasm, I have no idea what you are trying to say.

And yes, saying that people hate ebikes because they can't afford them is an elitist comment, even with context.
  • 5 2
@swan3609: I want the weight to come down. They never list the weights, and that can’t be by accident. When e-bikes lose 10lb I’ll get interested.
  • 2 2
@highfivenwhiteguy: the guy called him an amateur. Thats elitist. Then he sounds off on his profound wisdom on how e bike racing is going to go down, even though he is biased and has limited experience with an eeb/elitist
They are more expensive with an equal groupset on an emtb and mtb, although you dont need the lightest parts on the eeb
  • 4 1
@deadtime: dude totally agree.. Battery technology is the next thing that needs to happen to get the weight down. There is no way to fight the weight of the battery and motor. I agree that the added weight does make the bike less playful. I compare it to descending with a mid 2000s 45lb DH bike. Still fun, but definitely a bit behind the modern enduro sleds we are used to now.
  • 4 3
@deadtime: could they lose some weight? Yes Would i want them to be the same weight as my enduro bike? No. Would i wait and miss out ? No way.
I like the planted feel the majority of the time, the exception being when i have to quickly muscle the bike. The advantages far outweigh(pardon the pun) the disadvantages. Planted and super fun/stable jumpers. I wouldnt want to lose that. Low 40's is probably perfect and theres a few options now in that weight. My decoy is 48 stock. Funnest thing ever, jump trails, climbing wet rooty trails(rainy days no one is on them), night riding it keeps the flow rather than apprehension because of the dark, shuttle machine, exploration, quick blast, bike park, many times i get home and grab my saw and go back for a deadfall or 3, errand getter, etc etc. A lot of things i never considered
  • 8 1
I rode my e bike with a bunch of buddies on non assist bikes. We all pedaled to the top, and then went down after. After that we had a beer. Pretty sure theirs tasted better though.
  • 3 1
@SoDiezl350: you drank their beers!?!? The winning never stops. #thuglife #eeblife
  • 5 1
@swan3609: Probably a lot of e bike haters like riding uphill and down and don't see it as a slog. Plus the more you do it, the less it is a slog.
  • 5 2
@matttauszik: I like riding uphill.. I like riding uphill faster better.. I actually average a higher heart rate on my ebike rides because I am actually having fun climbing instead of just grinding along. I am capable of climbing 8k tomorrow if I had to. But I'd have more fun climbing 12k on my ebike if I had the choice.

I respect people not wanting them for themselves, but I can't imagine anyone getting on one and saying that it wasn't a fun experience.
  • 1 1
@swan3609: I should have explained it. What I meant was that you can't be pro-riding ebikes. E.g. if you are riding an e-bike you can't be a pro-ebike-racer. I didn't mean you can't be a pro non e-bike racer of any kind.
  • 1 1
@IluvRIDING: Actually there will be a pro e/ Enduro series next year. Technical climbing combined with technical downhill. Could turn out to be an interesting race series.
  • 1 2
Not really. Just those stuck in the past will shuffle off to retrobike along with their 26" wheels & triple chainrings.
  • 3 0
 @mcozzy: 26 is still fun.
  • 3 1
@deadtime: Weight on an ebike is different than a pedal bike. The motor masks the extra weight & the suspension works better.

  • 5 1
@lognar: Ya you can get away with that shit when you're 22 years old and weigh 140lbs.
  • 4 1
@chriskneeland: Ryan Nyquist was competing Crankworx on a hardtail, and he's now 40. It's largely personal preference. I'm in my mid 30's, ride large DJ and slope on the same hardtail, and would never want rear suspension.
  • 18 1
@man-wolf: Well you're a fn man wolf so...
  • 2 0
@man-wolf: slopestyle rear suspension is super stiff, with a steep shelf. So it rides like a hardtail, until you come up short & it has ~80mm of give. Saves the knees.

lol so true. i'm 40 this year and i remember we all drooled over the Litespeeds, Moots YBB, Dean that would be shown in the Nashbar or Performance catalogs that would come in the mail. I eventually was able to get a Dean Ti hardtail with the first gen RockShox SID that was blue and black. LOVED that bike. those were the days we'd race xc and ds on the same bike which had a 100mm stem, xtr v-brakes, Mavic 217/xtr hubs, 2.1 wtb velociraptors

As every teenage mtber in the 90's I too dreamed of a ti hardtail, such as Merlin,Litespeed,Dean,Parkpre or GT.
Never got even the chance to throw a leg over one of those.
But I am now even happier, with a "restomod" Cove Hummer XC. I love that bike!
  • 2 0
@cuban-b: c'mon now call it by it's proper name: Supergo
  • 1 0
@cuban-b: I listed my racelite as Hardtail XC in the poll. Its dark blue with silver panels so no two tone. I should have got the rasta color one, but it was one of the last Santa Cruz bikes as Trek was taking over so I had no real choice on colors. I ride it to remind me why modern geometry is so much better, it handles like an over caffeinated border collie. Also the SID SL it has is such a noodle compared to modern forks.
  • 1 0
 Moots!
  • 1 0
Not so sure about XC, but a Ti HT for sure. I'd love me a hardcore HT. Not the quickest or most elegant on the trails, but I know I'd be grinning ear to ear on everything from a towpath to DH runs.

Own a 150/145 trail bike. Want a +160 bike to be an endurobro for trails I will probably never go down in part of the country I can't access without min +15hr drive. Watch too much youtube about these place. Should just learn to ridethe trails I got faster.
  • 3 0
Full suspension bike with a 10.5” eye to eye shock, but it believes itself to be a hardtail. I’ll race it in the hardtail class and if you don’t think my bike is a hero you are nothing but a bigot.
  • 22 19
Very ponderous. Who is this enigmatic dude that looks at a motorized bloated bicycle shaped object and instead of throwing up in mouth, forks over thousands and takes it to trail head for eternal ridicule from peers.

I'm old/past it now, i run a old dh bike singlespeeded plush as fook to lap the park. I've an old transition double for the jumpy trails with an eagle setup so can pedal back up so as not to fook up my knees for the next few days. Was thinking of an ebike but would rather just do uplift holidays whenever i can.
  • 4 0
 2 for me.

100/120 XC bike for normal trails and xc racing of course
160/160 enduro for park, traveling, and trails I know would suck with the XC bike
  • 3 0
Could have been more specific to really mean something. I have a 150/140 27.5 trail bike but have wanting a 130/120ish 29er to add to the stable.

Also need to put Fat bikes in the list!!
  • 1 0
Currently have a trek stache ss and a 2017 transition patrol.

What Id really like next is a not quite cross country bike like the Pivot 429 trail. I had a old pivot Mach 429 and that thing was fast.. however too small for me and a bit too cross country. I find it odd that so many company’s trail bikes now are 140mm and super slack, or you go straight to a pure cross county race machine.
  • 2 0
Exactly! Trail bikes are now mini enduro bikes. To leave space for the down country bike you definitely need in your garage.
  • 2 0
I recently bought a downhill bike to add to the fleet and it’s one of the best things I’ve done for biking. Helping me improve in heeps, that will trickle down when I’m on my enduro rig.
  • 1 0
So I’ve got a sick All Mountain enduro bike and I don’t ride cross country and only occasionally bike parks so dirt jumper, one would be sick to learn tricks in before taking it to my Remedy, plus just fun to go mess around on or hit up the dirt jumps.

@mikekazimer , I just want to say THANK YOU for this poll format. I was ready to immediately comment something how it's meaningless without knowing the current bike(s), then I did a double take and was pleasantly surprised. Salute tup

Pretty happy with what I have. I have a commuter/road bike that's never getting used, and a hardtail enduro bike........If I had a third bike, then 2 others probably wouldn't get used, so yeah, not a multi-bike type of guy. Just even in the maintenance, if I had five bicycles, I'd go insane.
  • 1 0
Why no fat bike option? I'd love a new fat bike for Winter riding, pretty much a requirement in Alaska if you want to ride year round but presently I have to be happy with swappable wheelsets on a trail bike. 27.5 plus with studs in the winter and 29er in the summer plus shoulder seasons. Gravel Bike or DH bike is a close 3rd option.

  • 1 0
I wonder if a lot of commuters are falling into this category. My next commuter will probably technically be a gravel/cx bike. I put my current one as a road bike, but it's really more gravel in geo.
  • 1 0
What i'm surprised at is that there are more road bikes among readers than there are DH bikes. Say whaaaa?

I am one of the rare ones that 'wants a road bike next'. Having and enduro bike, i can't see myself needing anything else to be honest. There aren't any trails really suited to a downcountry bike around here, which is what i would like in general. Anything that can be ridden with an XC bike here is better ridden with an enduro bike. So yeah, roadbike.
  • 1 1
Most of my riding is very XC-oriented and I'm actually considering a full-rigid racey mtb for blasting around on. Possibly even singlespeed. They're a hoot to test your skills and they make great commuters for when you wanna take the long way home or take a "wrong turn" cruising the urban environment.
Anyway i know no one cares about that so I'll stop lmao
  • 2 0
No answer for town or commuter bike. I get that gravel or cx or clunker may apply. What about thrift store shit bike that's tuned well....
  • 1 0
So many options, but sell unused bike was not an option. I've got 3 bikes that need to go and no new bikes to buy. as far as dirt, i haven't found anything I can't ride with my Canfield EPO, Knolly Warden or Salsa Fargo.

The only people who should use the word "quiver" are archers and horror/suspense writers.
  • 1 2
Trials bike would probably teach me most. Wonder if it would make a good pumptrack bike too. The gearing is useless for pedaling and the bike is nice and roomy for moving around so at first sight that makes it a nice double duty bike (for both trials and pumptrack).
  • 2 0
trials bike definitely would be awful at the pump track. I have a DJ and had a trials bike and they are nothing alike. Get a DJ, trials just hurts and is discouraging haha. The pros make it look easy.
  • 1 0
@shredthegnar79: Alright, thanks. I already have a dj bike and a BMX. The trials bike would still be welcome for trials but apparently it doesn't replace any of these other bikes.

  • 2 0
I have an SB 150 and I want an SB 100 with a 140mm 34 up front! I think that qualifies as ‘down country’ ?
  • 4 4
I would appreciate a "I have enough bikes" option.

Also I hate to admit this, but once you get an ebike, it really kills the desire to buy more bikes. Nothing climbs better and very little descends faster...
  • 2 1
Sincerely, why was there no “I don’t want another bike” option in this poll? This would definitely have been voted for by some users and would have been valuable data.

I had to choose "other". Apparently, while there are beach cruiser and fixie categories, my rigid single speed mtb is too passé.

I've got 3 bikes. Trail hardtail - SC Chameleon Carbon with a 140mm for. My most ridden bike. Short travel trail - SB100 with stronger brakes and DD rear tire. My fun and fast as fuck bike. This thing has seen Telluride bike park, Lake Leatherwood, Spider Mountain, and all kinds of trails in between. Never in a million years have I ever thought a 100mm travel 'down-country' bike would be so capable and robust. My favorite bike so far. And a trail-duro - SB130. Trail bike travel with enduro-ish parts, 203 rotors, dual ply tires, bash guard, etc. Used to have a Slash, getting rid of it for the SB130. Riding a 150mm travel bike around isn't that fun any more. Drank the enduro kool-aid. Had enough of it. Going back to fun again. I've come full circle. Less is more.

Less is more. Yes somehow you have to rationalize owning three nearly identical bikes. Taking a high fly line out of context tends to work. Too bad man who said it, spent incredible amount of time and skill achieving highly advanced compositions of basic forms, marriage of fundamental materials that is so sophisticated it borders with impractical and non functional. All to become best at minimalism, at the cost of everything else. I love his creations, I wouldn’t be able to spend more than 3 days in them.
  • 7 0
@WAKIdesigns: The SB130 is identical to a Chameleon? Uh....
  • 13 6
@WAKIdesigns: 1st bike - no rear travel. 2nd bike - 100mm rear travel. 3rd bike - 130(136)mm rear travel. Right. 'Identical'. If you spent just as much time riding bikes as much as you did being an internet a*shole, the world would be a better place.
