Pinkbike Poll: What Type of Mountain Bike Racing Are You Most Excited For in 2020?

Dec 14, 2019
by Mike Kazimer
Bruni smashing down through the beam after a fast and loose run but was it enough

There's never been a better time to be a fan of mountain bike competition. Whether you're into downhill, enduro, or cross-country racing, extensive coverage of nearly every event is only a click of the mouse or tap of the screen away.

Yes, sometimes the live feed goes down, or results aren't immediately posted, but the fact that those instances can even be considered annoyances illustrates how spoiled we've become. At the risk of sounding like an old timer who walked uphill both ways to school (in the snow), I can remember waiting anxiously for Mountain Bike magazine to arrive in my mailbox so I could see how legends like John Tomac, Ned Overend, and Paula Pezzo had perfomed, reading about races that had happened weeks, if not months, earlier.

We're in the heart of the off-season right now, and many athletes are starting to settle into their training routines, putting in the gym time and base miles in preparation for another busy season of racing all around the world. When the season kicks off in a few months – the first DH World Cup round takes place in Lousã, Portugal, on March 21, and the first EWS round starts on March 28 in Manizales, Colombia – it'll be time to see if all that winter preparation paid off. Don't forget that 2020 is an Olympic year, which adds another event to the schedule of the top XC athletes.

That brings us to this week's first poll question: What form of mountain bike racing are you most excited for in 2020?

What form of racing are you most excited for in 2020?

As a follow up, what form of competition (if any) are you excited to participate in next year? Unlike mainstream sports like soccer or American football, where there are vastly more fans than participants, many mountain bike racing fans also compete themselves. Is there a local enduro or DH series you're planning on participating in, or are you going to be gunning for XC glory in 2020? What about trying a pump track race, or digging out a grass slalom track and rounding up some buddies for some friendly competition?

What form of racing are you most excited to participate in in 2020?

Enduro is super cool and way more relatable to most people's riding style, but its just logistically impossible for them to put on a show like Redbull can with the DH. Im not getting up early on Sunday to follow the EWS twitter feed, but I sure am for the DH.
  • 52 40
With the level of riding in the EWS now even that isn't relatable to the average person. Those races are just longer DH races on slightly shorter travel bikes. But thats OK. Professional sports of any kind aren't really supposed to be relatable to what the common fan can do. Its that fact the they are doing things most of us see as impossible that makes it worthy of watching.
  • 95 1
I think the EWS highlight shows were awesome, and I can't wait for the series to start up again but nothing beats watching live fully pinned DH racing.
  • 12 7
@sino428: Those EWS races are gnar for sure but I don't know if it's WC DH gnar. Generally speaking of course and depends on the venue.
  • 24 4
 @azogas413:
define gnar. 2 runs flat out mayte t6 mins max. or riding 40km in a day doing 3 runs down completely different tracks whilst maintaing speed and concentration.
might not have the huge jumps but just as difficult in a different way, and more riders turn up to events and have a go before or after the pros
  • 29 6
WCDH and WCXC make for great TV shows. EWS does not.
  • 10 1
Honestly, I like the 15 minute recaps just fine. Would be cool to watch it live, but whatever, suits my present day attention span much better anyway, and it's an awesome treat for the monday morning train ride.
  • 6 1
@Hooch73: Define difficult. I hear ya. It's all subjective at the end of the day and there are steep and technical bits of each stage and/or course that could compare with the other. I was mainly talking about the "scary" bits of the course and not so much the endurance end of the spectrum. That being said, I think we would all agree that Val di Sole will put most EWS stages to shame.
  • 5 2
Enduro is more relatable because that's what the local and regional races are mainly about these days. That's what we have to race in the absence of real local DH (with a few big exceptions like SouthEast series, Bootleg, etc...but it ain't what it used to be). Promoters stand a chance with Enduro - the fields are way bigger than for DH. People are still scared of DH which is odd because Enduro is pretty much the same thing, just physically much more demanding.
  • 7 1
@endlessblockades: Depends on your location. A lot of the NW Cup DH races in the PNW have much larger fields than any of the enduro races. DH is more approachable for kids and newer riders that can't yet handle a 20 mile day with 4-5 stages as long as there are appropriate tracks.
  • 8 4
@azogas413: I think a lot of the EWS events have stages that are as gnarly as WCDH. Add to that the fact that riders are on shorter travel bikes makes it even more difficult. Northstar this year was a great example of how gnarly EWS is.
  • 2 0
@kamsbry: I didn't realize DH outdrew Enduro up there. Glad to hear that it lives on.....
  • 4 0
@owl-X: Did you see Canadian team enduro race at finals?! If we could get coverage like that with some of the top riders and summaries like they do already, would be way more appealing.
  • 18 0
As much as I enjoy the EWS highlights I feel like they could make much more of them. Take a couple of days to produce it and make it 30 minutes. Include summer cathro style split screen/head to heads on key sections. More analysis on riders outside of the top 3, who had a good stage, who was there fastest privateer, who crashed or had a mechanical and what happened, who is the most suprising rider of the event etc. Seems like they could get a sponsor ship deal with a camera company for a bunch of free cameras on tripods just left recording at all the points of interest.
  • 4 0
Also some pov footage from riders
  • 2 0
@catweasel: Agreed. I enjoy the highlights, but they could be even better.
  • 3 1
Another aspect that makes enduro more engaging for me, is that I race the local and sometimes national rounds. This means that as an enduro rider I have ridden (liaisons) with a lot of the top 20 riders and had a chat with a few of them. I have had the honour of being overtaken mid run by world champions!

Unfortunately DH isn't really like that, the top guys rarely show up to smaller races. So even though the live feed is way more exciting, there is a bit less engagement for me.
  • 5 0
 @catweasel: +1
If you consider how much enduro bikes the bike industry are selling right now, the bike industry could sponsor EWS coverage. It would benefit the bike industry aswell as us riders/watchers/fans. Win-win.
  • 11 1
@azogas413: generally the past couple of seasons EWS courses have been more technical than the WC DH courses which are faster than several years ago.
  • 1 0
Ha I’m excited about tandem slope style
  • 2 0
@Hooch73: knitting is also difficult in its own way. But its not as gnarly as dh.
  • 1 0
Basically came here to say this. Nobody is "watching" Enduro. At least not live
  • 1 8
flag Endurip (Dec 14, 2019 at 8:53) (Below Threshold)
@owl-X: Eh, in which way are wcxc a great show? Yes its a track so easy that anybody who can ride a bike can ride it, but its all a matter of pedaling and endurance. So little skills required, and so slow.
EWS is basically a long dh-course, and the skill level and different, exotic and spectacular locations should make it interesting for everyone. Even those who hardly can ride a bike (xc and road riders).
  • 4 0
@Endurip: It depends on what you find interesting. In XC you can watch a head to head race play out. In Enduro and DH you watch one rider go down a technical course. You obviously find the riding of the course entertaining, I find the head to head race entertaining.
  • 2 1
@catweasel: great idea. Sounds like you should make it happen. Just get some cameras and funding and off you go mate! I look forward to seeing your work.
  • 2 0
@Endurip: have you ridden any WCXC courses? I rode most of the Cairns track a couple years ago and there's features on it most people were going around on their trail bikes while the XC pros were sending on their tiny race bikes. The cameras flatten everything.
  • 2 0
We need more official EWS GoPro footage from riders in each stage, similar to Rally Racing. The Trophy of Nations race was some of the best coverage we've had so far for that reason.
  • 1 2
I can't stand the WCDH live commentary. I wish there was an "effects only" audio feed.
  • 1 0
@catweasel: absolutely yes. I hope it happens! I remember watching coverage of the tour de France as a little f*cker and being thrilled. Enduro would be a walk in the park with the right footage, commentary, and hosts.
  • 1 0
Agree. Enduro is great but it isn't a format well suited to being televised and watched live.
  • 2 0
@endlessblockades: The NW Cup finals this year saw a pro men's field of 29 but a total of 77 Cat 3 Boys and 29 CAT 3 Girls. Just over 200 youth racers total on one single day across all categories. Scott and Casey are killing it in terms of getting youth involvement in DH racing.
  • 1 0
 @kamsbry: That is awesome!
  • 95 3
No cyclocross or bike polo? What is this trash
  • 39 0
How about an Enduro Cyclocross Bike Polo 4 cross race
  • 9 0

I am most looking forward to world champs of Artistic Cycling and Cycle Ball

  • 18 0
What about Tandem DH? Apparently that is much more popular than we think according to other PB comment sections.
  • 8 0
What about "Enduro Alley Cats". Like the Red Bull urban downhill races and EWS have a bastard hipster child. The stages could be raced blind, racers learns the next stage at the end of the current stage, and include dodging traffic and chugging beers
  • 5 0
@chacou: catering is only allowed to serve avocado toast or artesian peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and organic hard kombucha. Winner get a custom color flannel.

Womens Cross Country, its insane right now. Everybody is at the top of their game and there are probably a dozen contenders for the top spot each week, I'm very excited to see where it goes!
  • 11 0
It's been more exciting than even MotoGP for the past few seasons. The only event I'll make sure I watch live. Forget the men's.
  • 2 1
@iamamodel: TBF motogp has gotten pretty boring with the Marquez show. I used to be a huge fan, even rode 1300 miles down to Austin to catch a GP. Now, barely even bother with the highlights
  • 4 2
Agreed. Woman's WC DH usually has a very small number of riders that could win on a given day...as in 1 when Rachel was dominating. Much more parity on the XC side.
  • 4 0
@ReformedRoadie: Well, but that has changed dramaticaly! There are at least 5 potential winners now.
Realy looking forward to these races.
  • 2 0
Same. I only watched two races all year. Mens DH and Womens XC. I don't know what it is about the womens XC probably a combination of "Kate fever" and an appreciation for how hard they charge.
  • 2 0
Agree, I have been watching the Womens XC for a few years. It's super competitive right now and the U.S. have a rider that can compete at the front. If Van Der Poel competes I'll the men's I'll pay attention. I never like watching 1 person dominate. This past downhill season I thought was a lot of fun too.
  • 1 0
And in top of that, in 'women xc' there xc....
  • 1 0
Honestly... It's the World Cup race I enjoy the most at the moment. I agree wholeheartedly, it's insane the level of competition in that field. It will be interesting to see who priorities the World Cup & who priorities the Olympics. There are a select group who have a chance of both. Whatever happens, It's brilliant to watch. Beer
  • 36 1
 Downcountry ebike racing...duh!
  • 9 0
 Ebike racing is more UpDuro.
  • 28 1
Following the greatest DH season, I'm hoping for more great DH.
  • 21 3
I'd be more excited about Enduro if you could watch more than the replays but I don't see how that would be feasible. I actually often wonder how they even fund that discipline without any form of tv revenue.
  • 19 0
 Hardline. Always, always, always Hardline.
  • 2 0
 So insane and so stylish!
  • 13 0
i would like a longer poll style - i love watching dh and if i could only chose one that's what i'd want to watch - second best thing is pizza + beer + slopestyle - it's just crazy - let's not forget big-screen and rampage and beer - xc ( specially short-track ) are super exciting to watch too. . . . .....
  • 45 0
my gf also asked for a longer pole style.

 True. Go AC.
  • 9 1
I'd be really excited to watch more Enduro... if only it were televised properly (or indeed at all). It'd be great to watch; all the narrow, janky lines, natural features, beautiful places. As it is it's kind of a frustrating watching experience. Perhaps that's no bad thing; the last thing it needs is for more flayed hillside and 'wide open' / dull tracks to suit camera angles. Anyone got a magic solution?
  • 12 1
Most excited about the Great Divide Mountain Bike Race
  • 4 1
This, exactly. Surprised there wasn't an appropriate option in the poll.
  • 3 2
Me too. Total opposite of DH. No interest in gravity
  • 3 1
It's called the Tour Divide and 2020 is likely to have a very strong field
  • 1 1
Rapha put on some awesome video's on Youtube of those types of events.
  • 9 2
I think after UCI put out that statement pretty much offloading any responsibility when Brook MacDonald crashed I said I wasn't going to watch or support their races anymore so... Where's that option?

I'm going to race the shit out of some local XC though; we're not even USAC up here.
  • 10 0
E bikes on Motocross tracks for comedic value.
  • 3 2
Nothing remotely funny about grown men on the wrong machine in the wrong place
  • 7 2
If EWS had the type of coverage as World Cup DH, EWS would be the clear winner. However, logistics dont allow for that so we are pretty stoked on watching DH. It will be interesting to see if camera technology and budgets change enough to capture EWS races in the detail of DH. Maybe one day!
  • 4 0
I think the problem with the EWS is not just about the logistics but also the story-telling.
The DH has the perfect format, the fastest man goes last. An almost full run visible in a few minutes. it makes for some suspense and a great show.
EWS has a lot to learn about Dh WorldCup/ I believe a lot could be done with better editing.
  • 6 2
I dont like competing or watching people compete. Competition is a lopsided form of mass oppression where only one out of dozens, sometimes hundreds of people, is elevated while dejection and sadness is spread throughout the rest. There is no greater inequality than what happens in competition. It is sad to watch grown men and women debase themselves for a paycheck in actions that are little more than profitless buffoonery. There is no elevation of the spirit or improvement of the mind in the experience. As we evolve into a more enlightened species, paid exploitative exhibition should fall into obsolescence, but until the rest of you people catch up with me, I won't condone or support your shameful actions. Be well.
  • 6 0
Also I'm mostly looking forward to the downhill races. Forgot to mention that.
  • 2 0
 @JohanG: FUNNY
  • 4 1
I can't tell if you're serious, this is so ridiculous it seems like satire yet so well written that it seems sincere. I was going to award you comment of the year but since you don't like competition I'll nominate myself and you can stay oppressed with the rest of the losers and have nots.

I look forward to the course previews. If done well, they are entertaining, informational, and really good hype for the weekend. It's always great to see Gee do the previews (DH), but it'd be interested to get some other perspectives also. There are so many good riders that see intricacies in the course at such a lightning-fast pace- can't wait.
  • 4 0
It's only a matter of time before there is live streaming feed from gopro on redbull tv or something where you can pick which camera you are watching live for enduro. If a news truck can do it. Redbul definitely can.
  • 3 1
Competed in my first enduro race last season and now I am taking my program up to 11. Ok not really, but looking forward to doing more racing and hopefully picking up some speed. EWS highlight shows tide me over with the lack of TV coverage, all in on enduro life.
  • 2 0
I would be excited to participate in DH racing if we still had provincial racing...everything is going Enduro. Even the "DH" races are now tracks that are less technical/gnarly, with most riders using their Enduro bikes. Gone are the days when, sections of a DH race course would scare me a bit and I was pushing my skills at races.
  • 1 0
Enduro is also eating up XC races, at least here stateside. Kinda frustrating how hard it is to find a good XC race in Colorado that isn't a marathon distance.
  • 2 0
I kind of started to like the EWS format best. But to me it appears nearly impossible to put on a reasonable TV coverage or live stream format. The race is just spread too widely and takes too long. But I would love to see even longer highlight shows (30 min or so). DH and XC are both great to watch and I love them both.
  • 3 1
+1 to what others have mentioned about EWS. Would love to watch a lot more, if it was properly televised, and or covered. 10 min highlight videos on YouTube is shit compared to WC coverage.

Who the fuck cares about racing lol.
  • 2 0
It´s bees said before by professionals like Iago Aray that with the live streaming possibilities today it is possible to show EWS live, by using rides go-pros and drones. That would be even be much more exiting than dh.
  • 1 0
The one thing I really enjoyed this year was RB Rampage.. not sure that's considered a race per se, but holly sh** those guys are talented!! Women's XC is great, cause a) they charge like it goes out of fashion, but mostly b) there is something about women in spandex =)
  • 1 0
Love watching DH! You have one run and everything is on the line. It’s not like Enduro and XC where you can make up time in other stages or on the next loop around. DH is fast, it’s gnarly and anything can happen in those 2-3 minutes!!!
  • 2 0
I really struggled to just choose one, I enjoy watching many aspects of racing. It would be an easier question of "what form of taking have you no interest in?"

Mountain unicycle DH is a thing but I wasn't aware of unicycle 4x. Chasing and pushing each other over on unicycles is fun and relatively safe so I can imagine unicycle 4x could allow for more legal physical violence than what's being allowed in bicycle racing. Could be fun.

  • 2 0
Like surfing or skating, when you make it a competition the level of skill and performance goes up but something is lost. Like if you really want to score it accurately you would award points for how you feel after your run. Not how your run compared to someone else's.
  • 2 0
Fest Series should be televised- most excited about this rock and roll bike contest
  • 2 0
Won’t be long and we’ll have all the coverage we need for EWS via drones.
  • 2 0
Teams of mini drone pilots flying down the same track as the racers. Tiny compostable nerf darts to thwart the other riders.
  • 2 0
I wish they had the same coverage as DH compared to Enduro. Let’s go Sam Hill!!!!!
  • 2 3
Went with XC because it's an Olympic year. On the women's side there's 10 racers with the chance to win any given race and on the men's you have Schurter vs MVDP, or simply MVDP completely destroying the field. Either should be fun to watch.
  • 2 0
Tough to pick a discipline, but overall I'm excited to watch the Women's DH and XC. Should be some amazing racing in 2020.
  • 4 1

If they're proper tech so that rider technique is the limitation, sure that's where they could come exciting. Though personally I prefer to see the use of dynamic weight shifts like Chris Akrigg does to make it up and over obstacles and I feel the extra power and weight don't quite reward that.
