Pinkbike Primer: The 2023 DH World Cup Series Finally Begins at Lenzerheide

Myriam flying straight as an arrow into the top spot for her first win of the season.

Continuing a packed month of World Cup racing in June after the flat-out Enduro racing in the Finale Outdoor Region the DH World Cup finally kicks off its 2023 series in Lenzerheide. This weekend will be another test for the new ESO Sports and Warner Brothers Discovery. setup as it gets its first chance to impress with the new DH coverage and race format. Here is everything you need to know ahead of the 2023 DH World Cup opening weekend.

Where is the Opening Round?

The Swiss weather Gods saved the best for last.

As a regular venue on the World Cup circuit, Lenzerheide is a known quantity for both riders and fans as it offers a technical high-speed course to test riders' nerves as they make their way down the mountain to finish up their race run with a huge drop into the finish area. With high speeds and tight times, this will be a great opener to the 2023 series.

The 2022 World Cup season makes it next stop in the Swiss mountain resort of Lenzerheide.
The woods developed quickly throughout the day.

What's the Track Like?

Ben Cathro and Thibault Laly take a run down the 2022 World Cup course

There haven't been many changes to the Lenzerheide course since it first featured on the world circuit, although recent years have seen some fresh wood sections thrown in to mix things. The track has always been flat-out, with riders hitting high speeds before the classic big drop into the finish area.

Who Won the 2022 Overall?

photo

Racing doesn't get much better than what we witnessed during the 2022 season. After a dramatic series of races, it was Camille Balanche and Amaury Pierron who came away with the 2022 overall titles.

Elite Women: Camille Balanche
Elite Men: Amaury Pierron

What Happened Last Time at Lenzerheide?

The fourth round of the 2022 downhill World Cup at Lenzerheide saw Gracey Hemstreet lay down a rapid run to pull ahead of the fastest qualifier Phoebe Gale by just under two seconds. Jenna Hastings wrapped up the top three, five seconds back. Pinkbike Racing's Aimi Kenyon made a podium appearance in fifth place. For the Junior Men, it was Jackson Goldstone who came out on top and went one and a half seconds faster than Lachlan Stevens-McNab. Jordan Williams was fastest in the first two splits but lost time on the second half of the track and ended the day in third place.

Myriam Nicole put together an absolutely wild run on the dusty and blown-out course to secure a massive win of over four seconds. Camille Balanche improved upon her top qualifying run but she just didn't have the speed to match Myriam. Eleonora Farina was the only other rider within nine seconds of the winning run and completed the top three.

The Commencal team took a clean sweep of the Elite racing as Amaury Pierron went into the top spot by over 1.4 seconds. Finn Iles had been the man to beat for a large portion of the race but it wasn't enough for the win. Greg Minnaar had a great run to take third place and even beat Amaury in split two.

Who has Won here Before?

Rachel Atherton back between the World Cup race tapes.

Lenzerheide seems to have a habit of producing repeat winners and seeing the French riders on top. Since it became a World Cup venue in 2015 Rachel Atherton and Myriam Nicole have each won three times with Greg Minnaar and Amaury Pierron taking the top step twice. Sadly Myriam Nicole won't be able to attempt to secure three wins in a row as she is sitting out the first sets of World Cups as she continues to suffer from ongoing concussion symptoms.

I am still waiting for the answer why the heck we need to wait 9 months between 2022 last stop and 2023 first stop.

Sorry, I missed the last time you asked this question.

The bad:
- You need to wait for longer.
- Riders who get injured will likely miss several rounds.

The good:
- Privateers can have a longer more regular job in the off season to save up for racing season.
- Considering most races are in Europe, non-European athletes can cut back on travel and staying costs if they don't have to stay abroad for that long. We know there are amazing racers in Australia, Aotearoa and Canada but the costs for racing the (European rounds of) the world cup is prohibitive for most.

In line with my last point, I still don't get why there aren't more races in other continents. Yes it might become more expensive and more difficult for the status quo but it will open up opportunities for others for whom the current situation is even more prohibitive. Even BMX racing is seeing more races across the world even though the tracks they build for the races are truly inaccessible for the enthusiast. Which isn't the case for DH and XC.

Either way, a longer series will always benefit the pro racers and make life harder for the privateers. I'm not really sure whether this is where I'd like to see the sport go. It has already become more corporate and polished recently (especially with the rule prescribing them to wear clothes marketed for the purpose and wearing them exactly as told). Yes, possibly great for making the sport look professional and sleek to the outside world, but harder to relate to for those who aren't attracted by "sleek". Making the series longer will weed out the privateers or at least keep them from riding most rounds hence getting noticed on the overall scoring sheet. If you add the other races and events these athletes can compete in (Crankworx, Hardline, Rampage, national series) there is still more than enough racing going on.

To be fair that was probably a concession to the new broadcasters. They had to figure a lot of stuff out.

How many years in advance do the venues get picked? Fort Bill is World Champs this year, and the other low/early season tracks - portugal, lourdes and croatia; and not forgetting southern hemisphere venues - aren't on the schedule.

@AyJayDoubleyou: Lourdes won't be a venue again unless they can sort out the funicular. It doesn't have the capacity or speed, which is why they're going to Loudenvielle with it's fast modern lift instead.

Paid subscription required to watch, which still doesn't cover world champs, goofy condensed schedule, shittier announcers with no Rob Warner, unnecessary extra seeding rounds, and no DH fantasy. It's like the powers that be teamed up and decided 2023 was the year they wanted people to stop watching the sport.
  • 15 3
I still don't understand why we need a semi-final and a final. This is not a team sport and there are no knockouts required. You qualify then you race. It's now 2 races in one day. Double the effort, double the danger, double the exhaustion. What am I missing?
  • 5 4
More racing. Sounds good to me.
  • 4 1
 don't try 4X then............
  • 16 0
@JonnyTheWeasel: Said it before and ill say it again, if we want more racing then I'd rather see more weekends
on the calendar and new tracks. Not the same tracks twice.
  • 3 1
I think it's a compromise. Showing the full race run is a big improvement over prior years, but you need to trim the rider list otherwise the whole event gets way too long. Hence having a Final with fewer riders. But that risks excluding a LOT of riders/teams who have invested a lot of time & money to qualify for the event in the first place (and it's not like televising qualifying rounds are a big draw for viewers). Hence having a semi-final, with chance for more riders to at least get some coverage and the chance to accumulate WC points. It's not ideal, and I suspect it'll evolve again next season, but I can kinda see how this year's format came about.
  • 2 2
Discover and the ESO changed the format to fit a specific broadcast window and give smaller teams and privateers some screen time. The broadcast needs to fit my guess a 3 hour window. Possibly two. The ESO will also cut down tracks that are longer to fit within my guess is a three to four minute race runtime. All of the changes have been spun as a next level experience but really its to fit a certain broadcast standard.

 More ratings?
  • 12 5
Ill be waiting to hear what the coverage of the first race is before throwing down money on a subscription to GCN+. The 30 min highlights programme for enduro on youtube was free and I assume they will do the same for DH. Coverage will have to be spectacular to warrant the money IMO
  • 10 1
Here's hoping. I've just signed up at £7.99 per month but it can be cancelled anytime. Annual subs are less than half per month but the dh season is only a few months total this year...
DH coverage is the only thing I'm paying for. Don't really care about the rest of the content on GCN.
  • 21 2
At 40,- EUR per year, seeing what I otherwise spend on this hobby, and what subscriptions to see sports like football or Formula 1 cost, subscribing to GCN was a no brainer for me. However, as an ex-roadie, I also like watching the Grand Tour coverage.
  • 3 0
@FuzzyL: I also signed up just before the XC world cup race as I think there was a discount back then. I think I paid a bit over 30 euros for the year. I won't necessarily be watching everything live (as WC race time is play time for me too) but at least I can watch the parts I want to see (or everything) when it suits me. I was slightly disappointed by how little mountainbiking stuff they offer but they do have an Atherton video I want to watch someday. I also talked to Darcy Wittenburg (Anthill) whether I could buy his new video and he expects it to be on certain streaming services (none of which I'm subscribed to). But as he'd need the GCN+ subscription anyway when he wants to watch the races, he'll be looking into that as well. So yeah, the subscription will probably become more valuable for us mountainbike enthusiasts eventually. Either way, the XC broadcast was nicely done. If they actually film every run completely so that you actually get to see everyone, I'd say that's well worth those 30+ euros.
  • 2 1
 @FuzzyL:
Same here I will give a try for that price, and I have asked them if it works abroad as well and the answer is yes. The calendar you have access to depends on your original subscription and then you can watch from any country (handy if you travel for work or holidays)
  • 6 0
The annual subscription costs less than a single MTB tyre...
  • 4 0
@FuzzyL: I've signed up, and really wish that you could filter by interest - its a bombardment of road cycling, which I have no interest in at all. Gingers crossed for a good race!
  • 1 0
@Brodybro29: I haven't even checked actually, what happened to the world championship races? Are these now available under GCN+ too or does this still require a VPN connection to make it appear like you live in a country you never heard of?

@russthedog : You can filter. For instance when you choose "racing" in the white bar up top, you can click "mountain biking" in the bar with the icons. This will not only give you racing, but further down you also have "The Athertons" and "High Stakes" with Chopper Fielder. Yes, nowhere near as much as we would have liked to see but at least you're no longer being bombarded with road cycling Smile .
  • 2 0
@vinay: I think if a county had a broadcaster that owns rights to championships then same as before if they grant GCN rights then yep GCN if not same broadcast as before. UCI can’t just saw sorry we sold yiu the rights but also sold them the rights. I know GCN says it has grand tours but I bet for example in the US I can’t watch Tour De France it’s rights are owned by NBC.
  • 1 0
@vinay: hmm I'm on an Android mobile and can't see it - are you looking on something else?
  • 1 0
@vinay: I watched the Grant Fielder vid yesterday. He lives in the same place as me and rides some of the same spots so it was interesting. His bad crash was horrific. Lucky to be alive.
  • 1 0
@tremeer023: I quite like Discovery+ for some niche sport watching: Free diving, weightlifting etc. Probably not worth the £7.99/mth though
  • 1 0
@JJYork: actually a typo from me above, the monthly is £6.99 (it's my kids game pass that is £7.99 - damn subscriptions). Discovery+ looks better I think, but i read there was a question mark over whether they would be showing the DH soon.
  • 2 0
@tremeer023: Same here - worth a few bucks for this month and we get multiple events
  • 2 0
the race coverage of the first XCO and XCC in Nove Mesto was really good. There were no gaps where you didn't have at least one camera angle of the riders. Now DH might be more difficult and Rob "the voice" was not there but it was really good so I am hopeful for the DH coverage.
I have been subscribing to GCN+ already as the coverage of cycling races is pretty bad in Australia (both in the number of races we don't get to see and the quality of the commentators).
  • 1 0
GCN actually broadcast an Aussie DH and XC round earlier in the year, though there weren't a ton of cameras on the Threadbo (spelling?) on the track.
  • 2 0
@minesatusker: True about the Thredbo events. These were small events compared to a World Cup event held in any of the series' locations both in Europe and North America. time will tell.
  • 1 0
@russthedog: Oh, I was using a regular (MS Windows and also a Manjaro Linux laptop) computer using the Vivaldi web browser. Pages may look different on mobile platforms, but can't you click something in your browser settings to watch the desktop version of the page? You can then also check certain videos to add them to your favorites. So you could already check the races you want to see up front so that they're already in your favorites when the live broadcast starts (if you do want to watch the race live).
  • 1 0
@vinay: You cant add future events to your list unfortunately. Im using the app so I dont think I can - thanks to your advice I found where i can filter in the racing section but i have to apply it each time I access the app
  • 2 0
@ozfrenchie: When i saw those live, i hoped they would also be showing national/regional races. But seems to be as far as they have gone. Plus, they didn't advertise the Thredbo coverage in their line up. I just found it by chance. But yeah, lets see what they start to do in the future.

Haven't signed up for Discovery+ yet, but trolling their site, zero mention of live streaming events, no mention of UCI mountain bike stuff either. Has anyone signed up and watched the live XC from a few weeks ago in the US on Discovery+? MTB really seems like it's in the back seat to all of those stupid reality shows
  • 3 0
I think we have to have GCN+. I have access to a Discovery+ but I couldn't watch the last XC round.
  • 3 0
I was hyped because my wife had Discovery+ (TLC, etc...) to watch all her shit ass reality tv dating shows and I thought I was gifted a silver lining. They've said in previous threads that USA Discovery+ won't have it... unless that's super recently changed. Cause of course not...
  • 2 0
I spoke with someone from Discovery+ a while back and they told me that they will not be showing any live sports (obviously i was specifically asking about MTB). Granted, I'm in Canada, so YMMV.

LIke many others have said, the cost of GCN+ is a fraction of a single new tire, and for the one sport I really love watching, I shelled out the cash for this year with fingers and toes crossed for decent broadcast!
  • 1 0
@coginthemachine: Ya, I don't mind the $9, unless the broadcast really sucks.
  • 2 1
So basically, just a giant ass mess. Because a non-sports network bought the rights to a niche sport that they didn't
realize involved inbreds, mattress eaters, multispouses or pedophiles... Soooo... GSN???

Discovery and HBO merged into "Max" - any update on what this means for coverage? PB article isn't updated. Is Discovery+ still separate? We have Max and can't find any UCI
  • 5 0
I know! My number 1 question for pink bike. Get to work editors
  • 5 0
I have access to Discovery+ and I couldn't watch the last XC round. I think you have to have a GCN+ subscription.

I think? The most frustrating thing is that it isn't clear. I'm fine with $9/month if they just freaking communicated with us.
  • 3 0
@hamncheez: From what I've seen looking around at that whole Max change up, Max is now HBO and Discovery+, but Discovery+ is still a standalone app and will have content that doesn't get moved into Max, although more stuff will get moved into Max over time (but still not everything). I agree, really frustrating and confusing, since I have an HBO subscription that I was hoping would grant access with the merger. If you're saying not even standalone Discovery+ has it then this seems like such a mess.
  • 1 0
So it's GCN in the US. Is PB not working to clear up confusion as GCN is a pseudo-competitor?
  • 2 1
@jscaramella: Yes. GCN for racing. This has been discussed.

I'm thinking of making a running tally of timed training points. 100 pts to first place, 95 for second, etc. I'll try to post the overall standings in the comments after each round. Winner gets bragging rights till the beginning of next season I guess.

I look forward to the broadcast being epic, well produced and solving many of the complaints people had about RedBull. Just give it a chance FFS. Its still the greatest sport in the world, how bad could it be?
  • 2 0
It can be really bad…..really, really bad. Maybe take their first attempt at a course preview as a way to predict

Does anyone have insight into what the Semi Final broadcast will look like? I'm imagining something like Supercross qualis on peacock. Kind of a rough, not heavily produced, potentially no commentary type of feed?

I don’t think semi finals are being broadcast. Most likely filmed for a highlight package ahead of the finals
  • 3 0
@bgoldstone: Semi Finals will be live streamed on GMBN Racing Youtube & The UCI MTB World Series Youtube - same with the Junior DH!

@bowsaaarrr: THey are being broadcast, the question is what will the broadcast look like compared to finals?

I will be riding on Saturday so will the race be available to watch as a rerun? Will I have to pay for that?
  • 1 0
There's a question .... We're out with a suspension company on Sat dialling in the lads Enduro bike. I can see it's on Eurosport on Monday afternoon, but would ideally like to watch on catch-up even if it means paying for Discovery+ on the Saturday.
  • 6 0
I'm not sure about Discovery+ or Eurosport but on GCN+ the XC replays were available straight after the race to watch.
  • 1 3
 @edspratt: for free?
  • 4 0
@ciechan: Not for free, I understand the U23 XC, Junior DH and Elite Semi-Finals will be available live and with replays for free. But Elite Finals and XC live and on replay are only available if you pay. They normally have the highlights from the race released pretty quickly for free on YouTube.
  • 1 0

I don’t need another social media crap app. I can guarantee I will open the app to watch a race after it’s done and see some post by someone in this app that will show me the winner of the race. It’s not like I can avoid the spoiler when I have to use that app to watch the race that is being spoiled in the app.

I’ve got a feeling it will be on Discovery+, which shows the live Eurosport stuff and you can get as an app, for free on sky through certain sky subscriptions.

Not 100% on this, will have to check later when I’m home.

I looked at this last night as well and it looks like if you're a Sky customer you gaet a free subscription to discovery+. With a bit of faffing regarding account registartion it now looks like I have access. Worth a try for any other suckers out there like me who are Sky customers.

@Oregon29: I tried that for some of the XC. got the Discovery+ app on the telly. Winner.
But it then said i needed to pay for live sport ! Gutted !

Eurosport E1 schedule shows a 30 minute ‘replay’ on 8am Saturday (even though the race starts 8am so what are they replaying?) and that’s it.

@majunior: Yeah i signed up to Discovery+ through my Sky subscription and it was free... I've tested it using Tennis and i'm able to see Sports and watch.
Whether i can watch the DH on catch-up without seeing the result as we're out cycling already, that's very much open to debate.
