Pinkbike Sick Threads T-shirt Contest - The Winners!

Nov 3, 2010
by Julian Coffey
It's 2am, and we're still sitting in front of the monitors with glazed eyes, sore backs and melted brains. This t-shirt contest has literally blown our minds with how epic the creative output on Pinkbike is. Picking 3 winners out of over 3000 entries was harder than we could have ever imagined.

We are STOKED to announce the winners...The Pinkbike Sick Threads contest generated so many rad designs, that we couldn't stop at just 3. Yes we've chosen the top 3, but we've also picked an additional 9 designs - this means 12 sick t-shirt designs from the Pinkbike community will be screen printed and added to our 2011 line up!

The additional 9 winners will all receive a copy of Lifecycles on DVD, a $150 credit to spend in the Pinkbike store, and of course, 2 shirts with their design on them.

So without further ado, here are the top 3:

an interesting 3 picked as winners, some of the others are way better.
  • + 12
Way better in whose opinion? Everyone would pick something else, but at the end of the day the Pinkbike is giving away the prizes and it's up to them who will be rewarded.
Great job all of you winners! Congrats!
  • + 22
the winner probaly won because of the advertisment not the desgin, but still a pretty good desgin
  • + 24
I didn't like 1st place too much, it was nice, but it was a lot of others that was waay better. Anyways, BIG props to the winners and the other nice designs up here!
  • + 13
favs would have been the smartest idea to find out "whos opinion" because at the end of the day its the consumers opinion that matters. and us, being the consumers should have had a larger say i think.
  • + 15
Based on that, these would've been in the final mix:

http://www.pinkbike.com/photo/5802350

http://www.pinkbike.com/photo/5754621

You think these would've been more deserving?

No way! ;-)

BTW: Congrats to the winners!!! =)
  • + 2
no those did not fit the criteria. and im not saying that the one with the most favs should have one but i do believe that the ones with the most favs should have made up the finals. like maybe the top 10-15 shirts rather that top 300.
  • + 4
I'm sorry, but I don't think we're going to agree on this.
  • + 5
I think pinkbike should have had a vote from scratch on the finalists. so overall favs didnt matter, just the ones in the finals. or instead of favs, have a more 'official' voting system. just a thought
  • + 2
Lets not forget this is something that has a target audience of people ranging 10 - 60 years old, men and women. This is about a shirt to sell and be worn by the users of this site. There were lots of GOOD designs but the 1rst place was the best choice for a compromise of practicality and design. Congrats!!
  • + 7
a lot of others that was way better than first place ! ..thank U good night
  • + 7
Can't believe smike did not win.
  • - 1
SICK! can't wait to order a couple of these shirts!!
  • + 0
Third place is sick, others are... Boring. Same old same old.
  • + 7
how could it win? ;/ there is more better designs than this :/
  • + 8
Im sorry, I think the winners are pretty poor. In terms of graphid design I think the shirt by hen7 is by far the best. I would totally rock that shirt. Its too bad because there were so many great shirts out there that blow these out of the water.

 stop your complaining nancy.
  • + 6
dirtbag... The point of this t-shirt contest is to sell them to us. If we rather would have bought one of the else t-shirts that didn't win, we're allowed to say it out loud.
  • + 3
Staikeinthahood's right, the whole point is to get shirts that sell. I'd like to see the sale numbers for some of these in a few months...
  • + 12
Perhaps we should put ALL the designs in the store and let people buy shirts, and the most bought win additionally. Would that be fair to everyone?
  • + 4
Yeah, I'm not buying any of the top 3, but I would buy probably 5 out of the other 9 that were mentioned...Not liking the top 3 at all. Advertisement shirts are lame to wear. I like shirts that actually show what biking is to people who have never ridden a bike. But that's just me. Props to those who won
  • + 0
i was thinking of entering, but those shirts are so sick. i would actually buy a few of them
  • + 0
Hey! My shirt had way more faves and yet I didn't reach the finals. I'm cut, cut deep, real deep. I coulda done with some new Codes... :'(
  • - 2
I'll be honest. i'd wear this. tup contrats to the winners anyway

www.pinkbike.com/photo/5802350
  • + 2
Ya know I was gonna make a more brushed up version with a little more detailed wording, but hey, I didn't even make the finals. I guess I will just have to print it myself and become a billionaire. right?
  • + 3
Tim's should have won because it was popular. The winning shirt might look cool when all of three people buy it as I expect they will but Tim's represented a real message. Pinkbike should have man'd up and not been scared to upset a few xc riders, what are they going to do anyway? strangle you with their spandex?
  • - 1
When're these going to be for sale? I really want the fourth one!
  • - 1
Im truly disappointed that timlake's entry didn't make it into the finals, this was based on voted and popularity therefore he should be here, what a shambles!
  • + 7
It was NOT based on votes and popularity btw Smile In any case you can make your own tim lake shirt for free with just a red marker Smile
  • + 1
or you can use the paintbrush tool. Either way works a treat!
  • + 3
Im thinkin 3RD Place Prizes look better then the 2ND place prizes
  • + 2
2nd place didnt even enter within the deadline! wtf
  • + 1
At Ericvan, yeah he did, go look in his album, he posted on the 17th
  • + 1
oh ok, the picture used on the page here, its uploaded late though, so hes actually late but hes not
  • + 1
Spot on with the winning designs IMO. Those prizes are sick! I'd be as stoked with 3rd, 2nd OR 1st place prizes!
  • + 0
PINKBIKE PLEASE PRINT MY T-SHIRT!!!!! I JUST WANT ONE COPY!! PLEASEEEEEEEEEEE Smile

Congratulations Winners ! Smile You've won some good prizes. I will not be buying these shirts however, I think they're are many other shirts that I like a lot more and YES favourites should be part of the process yes cubicus you have a point but I'm sure they would have not allowed them to win. Pinkbike for future help I do would say there should be about 50 picked and US USERS pick them because we will be the advertisers buying these shirts. I am disappointed in the process and the choices of winners which doesn't matter now they are chosen and the contest is over but here are some honourable mentions I think we're good designs and I, personally would buy.

Yes a lot of the shirts everyone may not like they are just my opinions. Also for the ones that weren't perfect they're were many amazing ideas and designs that just needed some help which should have been done and they could have been better than these winners.

*I do congratulate the winners as stated, they are good but as the best of 3000+ I myself disagree.
  • - 2
way to take up half my computer screen, you get a neg prop.
  • + 1
Thank You Smile You certainly understand the point of the props. BTW my choices I'm not saying should win I was just pointing out my favourites.
  • + 1
congrats to the winners. i would be pumped if i were you and bummed to see all these comments. but i have to agree. i dont like these winners. I would buy 3rd place and i'd wear second place if i got it as a gift or something. but that's as far as it goes for me. ps. radek is such a good motherly figure on pb, coming up with new ideas to keep things fair and under control! haha.
  • + 3
 this is weak
  • + 2
thanks for your appreciation Smile by the way, there were many good projects, and won one of the worst ... I do not know who was on the jury... but he chose the worst shit he could choose (sorry Beneli, but you have better designs in your album). I do not know what the jury looked, but on 100% they do not looked how the users of pinkbike.com like projects...
  • + 9
"It's 2am, and we're still sitting in front of the monitors with glazed eyes, sore backs and melted brains"

Still doesn't excuse the Top 3 picks...
Sorry but any one of the nine runnerups were better than the Top 3.
  • + 1
then they could have asked pinkbikers who have nothing else to do to check designs. honestly its not that dificult. it might take less than 2 hrs to get through all the orignally submitted designs.
  • + 2
come on mike you cant say that. hen7, amazzone and flexo's were absolute garbage
  • + 8
I think the first place one is alright but I found much better ones that I would choose personally. I think it is kind of bland or boring. As for second place, it took me a min to figure out what was going on and I didn't like the "rock out" scribbled on there. Reminded me of a first graders work. As for the third place one, i'm totally turned off. The dude looks like an idiot. Sorta disapointed by the results of this contest. I was hoping to buy a cool shirt but I don't think I'll be buying one now unless they are making some of the extra picks.
  • + 3
I absolutely agree! The top three are mediocre designs with nothing new in them. I mean they're just mediocre and there are so many better designs! I won't be buying any of them, and this is just pissing me off more and more every time I look at them. But hey, I don't own the site.
  • + 6
What really makes me laugh is there isn't one design with the color pink in it in the top picks. You could really do a lot with that color, especially with the name of this site being pinkbike. The judges probably don't have any design background, which is why they are just going to pick what they like. But as far as the t shirt representing this company...I think some better designs could have been created, none of those shirts match today's trends, that's the bottom line. The design that got first place is decent, but I wouldn't say it's anywhere near a good design. I would have done a LOT different with the fonts, especially with the options you have in illustrator or corel draw...if you have an eye for good design.
  • - 2
If you think they are all shite, then please show us your designs.
  • + 5
I'm not saying their all shite. I was just saying that I saw some other designs that I think deserved to be in the top 3. Congratulations to the winners either way. Just giving my $.02
  • + 1
which ones would you have chosen?
  • + 0
i wouldnt buy any of those except for rawf85, glotzpinkbike, theillusivedesign, blindboy1, and holdon's. and i love how number one is the lamest behind hen7, amazzone and flexo
  • + 7
Even if some people think that some entries does'nt deserve 1rst place or finalist THANK YOU PINK BIKE ! This is so cool that you made a contest ! THANK YOU AGAIN ! Big Grin
  • + 7
Personally I think the additional nine were better then the winners (No offence to the winners the were good and congrats to all)
  • + 5
Only really feelin the first design. The second one, I don't get it. The third one is something anskibum might wear. I thought these were supposed to be fresh as hell, dope, sick. Only the first one is. The other two are just odd. I'm not disappointed I didn't win, I'm disappointed you lived these when there were so many cooler designs.
  • + 4
Congrats to all the winners! That was an intense and interesting contest. I like what I see in 2nd and 3rd places but the 1st... it's just too formal and blunt not even a fancy-formal contemporary design. It's as generic as Tesco or Wallmart. But hey that's not me who's giving away prizes.

I also agree with olegzoom about the white T-shirts. Who's wearing white outfit while riding or diging? Not so many.
  • + 5
Too bad, I was stoked on some of the designs after looking through the finalists, but these weren't any of them! To each his own, I guess. I liked this one: www.pinkbike.com/photo/5774499 and I wanted to buy it Frown
  • + 3
thanks for your appreciationSmile by the way, there were many good projects, and won one of the worst ... I do not know who was on the jury... but he chose the worst shit he could choose (sorry Beneli, but you have better designs in your album). I do not know what the jury looked, but on 100% they do not looked how the users of pinkbike.com like projects...
  • + 4
I think that they should of had the pinkbike community pick the winners, by how many favorites a design had. Everybody has different taste, some tacky of course and some very well, but at the end of the day, what can you do? Anyway, I guess I will be spending my money on something worth while, my BIKE!
  • + 6
I would not buy and will not buy any of the winner t-shirts, there were far better designs out there and its a shame they wernt choosen....but hey thats just my opinion.
  • + 7
most of the winners used white as a background. come on guys, white gets dirty fast!
  • + 6
mougetm's design is a rip off from MSR... it is the guy from the Hangin Sticker
  • + 0
indeed, it's a redraw of an MX biker transformed to seem a DH Racer. Don't remeber where the original pic come from and can't find it on google. You have the falcon eye !
  • + 3
Total rip off! the designs had to be original!
  • + 1
flexo1982 should be disqualified too! The top graphic in his design is a copyright infringement of this photo: http://www.pinkbike.com/photo/4952213/. He just cut out the rider and flipped the image...... I can guarantee that those other graphics are copyright infringement too!
  • + 0
Hey look, more copyright infringement in that design... The graphic on the left is from this photo: http://www.pinkbike.com/photo/4769221/, graphic on the bottom right is from this photo: http://www.pinkbike.com/photo/5719943/... all of his graphics are ripped off from POD's.... come on pinkbike this is a little embarrassing. You should probably have done some background research before posting the winners...
  • - 2
he did changes on every picture, so it makes HIS artwork in the end... I would only erase the riders face and the brands of bike and clothing...
  • + 1
Obviously you know nothing about actual copyright laws.... the LAW states: "Copyright law is quite explicit that the making of what are called "derivative works" (works based or derived from another copyrighted work) is the exclusive province of the owner of the original work." Both those designs use derivative works that are exact (or almost near exact) replicas of the copyright holders work.

Therefore, it is 100% copyright infringement and owners of these copyrighted works have every right under the law to pursue these infringements.
  • - 2
I guess is not that simple... If they are going to court, the original work (That one the guy used to base his artwork on) MUST be registered, otherwise will be only copyright infringement if he uses exactly or in some clear way, the same image as the original. But if he take some artwork, uses some piece of it to create something else, in a way that is different from the original, I believe (but I am no lawyer) its free of any charge; its like a collage, and we see it almost everywhere.

Here is a link with some legal basics about copyright laws: www.templetons.com/brad/copyright.html

If there is any user with some REAL law knowledge please enlight us, as I said before, I am no lawyer and I know just a little about copyright laws but I am well intended to hear about it. Its a very delicated issue, and I wouldnt like to discuss it with some rebel teenager.

btw... according to "derivative works", as you say, your design www.pinkbike.com/photo/5771561 is also an infringement of the copyrights of the poster Shepard Fairey designed.
  • + 3
So you’re saying "If it doesn't have a copyright notice, it's not copyrighted." "This was true in the past, but today almost all major nations follow the Berne copyright convention. For example, in the USA, almost everything created privately and originally after April 1, 1989 is copyrighted and protected whether it has a notice or not." (Quoted from the link you provided me above) Maybe you should read that a bit of that before you commented.

Also your example for my design is not valid because I never used any original copyrighted material... "Design style", which you are talking about, is NOT copywrited nor can it ever be. A good example is the coastal crew "multi-frame" video clip. Many people use that as a design style and while it looks similar, it cannot be copywrited.

I don’t really feel like having a pissing contest with you, so I will agree to disagree with you.
  • + 3
you are forgetting intellectual property. also general respect to those that worked hard hand drawing their designs. also the rule stating all entries should be original designs. copying someone else's image, copy writted or not, is not original.
  • + 1
It's hard to find the truth because laws aren't the same everywhere. In France we can use other artworks to create something new as an evolution. For example you can copy the joconde and make her looks nasty. Everybody will know you're not devinci but your artwork is still original. It's the same when you use samples to create a song. Try to explain to daft punk that their work is not original because they mostly use samples...
  • + 2
that is known as appropriation. it is a grey area in art were you must tread lightly. for example: Banksys appropriation of the mona lisa is obviously the mona lisa but she has on headphones and is brandishing a rocket launcher. that is original. but flipping and thresh-holding someone else's art work (in this case photography) i see not as appropriation but a blatant violation of the rules of the comp (original art work) and also intellectual property. i would be heaps pissed if someone used an image of mine in such blatant plagiarism.
  • + 2
Rawf85 clearly does not understand anything about artistry otherwise he would understand the ideals that are respected in the creative arts community on appropriation.
  • + 0
well, he didnt actually just flipped the image... I understand that is simply wrong... But Flexxo1982 had some artwork done based on a photo... so its the same MMMMMM did... he based his artwork in some famous poster... for me its the same thing - thats why I asked for some lawyer, its a complicated issue...
  • + 1
to be honest guys i dont really think pinkbike are that bothered. at the end of the day the pictures came from pinkbikes users. if they were from a professional advert then it would be a bit different. they could have quite easily used stock images to make their artwork! but lets face it, its expensive and it was a small competition. on another note i do hate it when people squash and stretch text. like in the winning design.
  • + 5
I didn't think to get to the finals, let alone being chosen for a prize! Many thanks PB and props to the winners!!!

I can't wait to get the shirt with my design! Big Grin
  • + 6
Great designs but what happened to the all images uploaded have to be 1280px wide rule..?
  • + 2
 damn straight!
  • - 2
The winning images, ie, the final files sent to Pinkbike by the winners, have to be a certain size. Not the mockups submitted for judging.
  • + 4
Thats not what the rules said though, congrats on winning as well one of my fav designs.
  • + 3
 Congrats to the top 3.

I think a big part of what was chosen, was how much it would cost to print some of the designs, or how flexible the design is.

For example, the "Freeride Clinic" shirt is ILL, but what about the design would you have to change to change the shirt colour? Or the "For those about to Ride" shirt: the overlay of colours probably posed a challenge to print.

Anyway, just my guesses, but well done peeps!
  • + 3
PLEASE PRINT ON GOOD QUALITY SHIRTS|!!!! I HAVE BOUGHT TWO SHIRTS FROM YOU IN THE PAST AND THE FIT SUCKS..LOOKS LIKE A BAG. PRINT ON SLIM FIT THIN SHIRTS. AMERICAN APPAREL IS ONE OF YOUR OPTIONS.
  • + 6
4th from bottom or the bottom are the best.
  • + 2
Guys get these designs printed on proper fitting shirts, I have a bunch of the old ones and they're on super thick uncomfortable Gildan shirts... get some AA t shirt blanks or fruit of the loom 50/50 t's and I'll order a bunch Smile
  • + 1
second that for AA but charging 20$ for a tee is a bit ridiculous tbh.
  • + 2
Who are the judges ? will they were those tee shirt at a day in the office for reflect the pink bike community/buisness on the street or on a bike ???....
Well done to the finalists at least !!
Beneli have some great skills !! well done mate !! your designs are super cool and reflect this sport !!
  • + 5
well done, but i for one wouldnt wear, let alone buy, any of them apart from the 1st placed one, and thats pushing it...
  • + 1
what are you on about. 2nd place is nice as.
  • + 10
Interesting how faves didnt come into play, yet theyre the clearest response from the buying audience of what they like. LOL.
  • + 3
so are the 2nd, 4th, 6th and 9th of the other nine entries.
  • + 4
I meant 2nd not 1st lol, but wouldnt wear any of them given a choice over other tshirts.
  • + 2
i believe that it should have been a community pick. that would allow those at PB HQ know what the riders want
  • + 5
Isnt that basically how the 'faving' works? Get the users to fave theyre favourites, then take the top ten most faved and get the judges to then pick theyre favourite 3 from them. O well, time to remove the logo and go print my design myself Razz
  • + 0
haha agreed. a few of my mates want my shirt too. haha meh shit happens.
  • + 6
 Cant believe!Congratulation to the winners!
  • + 3
You deserve it dude, even if the chosen one is not your best.
  • + 13
This is the first time that I won something. I need a fresh air.
  • + 2
thats a sick design man, Good work Salute
  • + 1
can i have the argyle? haha no man, i new from the start youd win this!
  • + 4
I didn't make the top 3, but I'm happy to be in the top twelve! Thanks for adding in the extra goodies for another 9 designs, and for the great contest!
  • + 2
I have to agree with what most other people have put, I couldn't come up with anything near as good but i don't think the first two are better than some of the others. From a graphic design point of view there ace but i dont think there really suited to t-shirt designs.
  • + 2
Congrats on the top 3 But Beneli had some better designs than his winning one. Personaly as far as design Skills go these were probably not the best created but for simplicity in colors and still making an effective design these are good. But a Pinkbike comminity vote would be cool! Anyway Congrats and it was a fun contest!
  • + 4
and mougetm... You plagerized and still got runner up? They should take you off the top twelve.
  • + 3
Will all the designs featured above be produceed....or just the winners???

...i thought the very bottem was the best...in my opinion...
  • + 1
Cheers man. Just happy to finish anywhere.
  • + 3
There were a few designs that I thought would be top 3 (or at least top 12) that I was pumped to buy...too bad for me.

Congrats to the winners!
  • + 3
WOOOOW! SO AWESOME! Thnk you all who faved my project! I'm so happy to see it on the podium. Also great idea with giving up 9 addictional prizes, those are great designs too!
  • + 2
Not keen on 2, 3 10 & 11 but I'm an old fart and not "with it" anymore, and TBH I wouldn't want to like them all - that would be dull and boring.

Huge congratulations to all the winners. Salute Beer
  • + 4
Still think Tim's should have won, haha.

www.pinkbike.com/photo/5802350

Those are all sweeet t-shirts though Smile
  • + 4
The real winner will be found out by the number of t-shirt sales
  • + 1
True! That would be pretty interesting i think.
  • + 1
 Very True
  • + 2
He probably means the real winner from the top 3. And obviously beneli wins that anyway... would anyone actually wear the other 2? I wouldn't. Especially not the third. (No offense, cause they are original designs, I just wouldn't wear them)
  • + 1
#2 definitely should've won 1st place. It is freakin deliciously detailed and must've took a lot more than JUST computer/text skills. Good job JHalls, I'm lovin the details on the dirt
  • + 1
Beneli definitely deserves 1st place. The guy designs for Devinci bikes, check out his online store devinci.spreadshirt.com I hope he'll sell his Pinkbike Tee on his site for less than $20, I buy one for sure.
  • + 1
Thanks but it was not for Devinci bikes! It was called Devinči designs, I was doing it for fan a long time ago, It was not meaned as serious bussines.
  • + 2
there where so many great designs. It would have been so hard to choose. I wish I had finished my design in time to submit it.
  • + 5
 Judge fail.
  • + 3
i agree. i will not be buying any of the top three shirts. some of the 9 nine that made the cut i would have bought though.
  • + 1
The three I'm buying: beneli, hen7, and theillusivedesign. I wish PB would put some of these on hoodies too...zip up and non-zip ups.

Personally, I'm a fan of the top 3 shirts and would wear each one... Man you guys complain a lot about these. Then again, I'm a fan of shirts with large graphics and are not the 'norm'. I have too many shirts with simple boring graphics. These are a refreshing change from a lot of other designs.

 this is weak.

Yes I agree, there are only a few really interesting desings and the rest are quite borring.

I thought this one ( www.pinkbike.com/photo/5833799 ) got the point of "pink bike" across faster and easier than all. When you see a group of people get out of the truck wearing this shirt, the first thing you see is a pink bike standing out from the crowd of others. Congrats to the winners though, wish I wouldn't have seen this post so late and had some time to throw some designs around. It's what I do for a living. =)
