Joe Nation Joins Pole Enduro Team & Pole Stamina Bike Revealed

Dec 7, 2018
by Pole Bicycles

2018 has been a blast. Pole invented and launched a new production method, set up a factory in Finland, launched two entirely new bikes and now presents a professional Enduro race team with two up-and-coming riders lead by a wealth of experience and talent. Since the company was founded, Pole has been introducing exciting new things every year. The biggest of it all has been the shift away from traditional carbon fiber route and inventing a groundbreaking new CNC production method to build whole bikes right in Finland. The Pole enduro race team is the next step and we couldn't be more proud of how it's all come together!
“It’s time to put our money yet again where our mouth is. Our goal is to climb to the podiums on the Enduro World Series and prove our concept at the highest level against other top riders and teams." - Leo Kokkonen

LEIGH “LEE” JOHNSON

Leigh finished in position 25 after a full season of 2018 Enduro World series. Pole started supporting Leigh professionally on the season 2018. Pole sponsored Leigh with full support without a team. This year we go full support for him. Leigh is a solid rider who makes not too many mistakes. On season 2018 Leigh kept improving his secret sauce of performance and for 2019 we have a good receipt for new top results. Leigh is refrigerator size shy guy with a big warm heart and a humble attitude towards the sport and other riders. Nevertheless, he’s speeding up to the podium with no mercy to the other racers.

JOSEPH “JOE” NATION

Joe is a biker to the core. He’s been roaming the world of bikes since he was a teenager and raced everything there is to be raced on bikes. Joe calls his early downhill years in Europe as his “Mowgli days.” Joe is a very stylish rider but exits every turn with more speed than he entered the corner. Joe is a cornerstone of a good team spirit who is willing to help anyone to get better at what they do. Joe knows a lot about dirt, as he is a geologist but loves more riding than analyzing the soil.

Height: 178cm

MATTI LEHIKOINEN - TEAM MANAGER

Matti is a legendary world cup winning downhill racer who is keen on sharing his experience and wisdom as team manager. From logistics to race strategy and technique, Matti's knowledge and raw speed will be a major key to racing for the top step this coming season.

THE BIKE

The Pole Enduro Race team will be racing the Stamina. The whole team is very excited about the bike, and they believe that they can go faster than ever with Stamina. The feedback was positive, and we heard a lot of words like: “huge grip,” “playful,” “consistent,” “fast". We believe the Stamina is the perfect enduro race weapon and we can't wait to see it flying down an EWS stage very soon. For more info and to pre-order your own Stamina, clink here.

"Large Pole Stamina"?... Too many jokes....synapses overheating....brain shutdown sequence initiated.

I'm sure those big things can go long.

So no one thought of sponsoring Johnny Sins nor Madingo? Johnny Sins has been using Specialized bikes on his works quite a while.

That seattube angle. Ain’t called a pole for nothin!

Did an image search for pole stamina at work... I guess I have more time to ride next year.

Reach so long it comes with a reach around...long travel for plenty of squish...wide rubber for when it gets wet...and...comes in rock hard titanium or blue steel.

Seat angle looks a bit slack for my liking....
  • 4 6
You're in the bike. Instead of the other way around, amiright?
  • 69 0
Haha look at the geo chart (polebicycles.com/stamina):

1. HEAD ANGLE------ SLACK
2. REACH------ PLENTY
3. TOP TUBE------- UPRIGHT PEDALING
4. BB HEIGHT-- NOT TOO LOW, NOT TOO HIGH
5. SEAT TUBE ANGLE--- STEEP
6. SEAT TUBE ANGLE (EFFECTIVE) VERY STEEP
  • 14 2
@hamncheez: I approve. Now mainstream industry needs to follow.
  • 42 2
We're approaching the event horizon where the seat tube, head tube/fork, and line between hubs make an isosceles triangle. At which point the entire geometry argument disappears up its own swat box.
  • 31 1
 @hamncheez: HOTEL ----- TRIVAGO
  • 20 7
@number44: Right? Why does progression in the bike industry always have to be incremental anyway? Let's jump straight to the 1x15 drivetrain, ape hanger riser bars, top tube so long you're essentially laying on your stomach, STA so steep your seat points directly at the ground, chainstays so short they cease to exist and your cranks attach directly to the back wheel (penny-farther style), head angle so slack your fork is parallel to the ground...I mean it's so obvious this is where the industry is headed, why not just skip to the end game?
  • 2 1
@number44: i thought it already went there a long time ago
  • 2 0
In static though... Considering the sag when you`re on it, I`m pretty sure it is efficient...
  • 4 0
@Franzzz: as an owner of a bike with similar seat tube angle, both real and effective, I can't even describe how efficient and awesome it is - it has changed my (pedaling) life. This looks revolutionary, but i bet a lot of bikes end up near this geo.
  • 3 5
@hamncheez: Thank is really annoying honestly who wants to pay like 4 grand for a bike they don't even know the geo of?

Smh Pole. These conservative geometries just don’t work for the steep and rowdy terrain I ride. When are these companies gonna wake up and start making bikes that aren’t designed for ants. Get with the program Pole.
  • 21 0
I thought everyone would be praising this bike due to three water bottle mounts but instead we are getting comments that’s it’s too big and weird. Never can please the pinkbike community.
  • 22 1
If PB was used for market analysis, one would determine that the ideal size Large bike would have a 425mm Reach, 2 water bottle mounts, have steel 180mm cranks, and cost just North of a Walmart bike, but South of a mail order bike as the manufacturer should do it for charity, not actually to provide for their family. Should be a top dog!

Why is the shock upside down in the pics here, but right side up on the website? What's all the stuff on the downtube?
Why does the geometry chart say:
1. HEAD ANGLE SLACK
2. REACH PLENTY
Why do I want to buy this so badly!?!?!?
  • 6 1
You can mount 2 water bottles on the downtube, and they have the back set of mounts set up with a OneUp EDC pump.

@SunsPSD: Naa I just took a 4 year apprenticeship in the trades.. Have a wife that doesn't sit on her ass, and don't buy shit I don't need.. I can afford these bikes!
  • 1 0
@bohns1: sounds about right, 2 year diploma, 2 incomes, no kids, live below my means. Oh and it helps that we live in a city with the highest incomes in the country with relatively low cost of living. Wink
  • 1 0
@arrowheadrush: Exactly... Although I have one in the oven..But that's not going to stop me! ????
  • 4 0
The old "people can afford things I can't, it must be that they are borrowing money and being financially irresponsible". They probably make good money and have disposable income. Nobody bats an eye at someone buying a $10,000 motorcycle. Also this is a halo bike, the top of the line, where most of the people buy evolinks which are more reasonably priced.
  • 1 1
I can afford them, but I certainly wouldn't buy one of these
  • 2 0
@bohns1: For the record, I 100% agree with you. I was just trying to make those that feel these bikes are entirely unaffordable feel better.

I think anyone that handles their money wisely and has an in demand skill, can easily write a check for these things. Not many can buy everything their heart desires, but with a paying skill and a bit of prioritizing, it should be cake to at least ride the bike you want. But look, something like 80% of adults don't even have $500 for an emergency. Doesn't sound like they are 'adulting' very well.

Also, from my perspective, the Ti cranks are a decent value My time is valuable enough that having a ride ruined every couple of years my snapped CF cranks is worth paying an extra $300 for that never to happen. I expect them to be the last cranks I ever buy.

Signed, a guy riding a $10K Mondraker that isn't a dentist but just a glorified trucker (I own 4).
  • 2 0
@SunsPSD: Haha nice dude! I'm no dentist either.. I have basically two hobbies.. Biking and snowboarding... You'll never see me in a 50k vehicle either.. I always get a kick out of the dentist comments.. This isn't a Bugatti or beamer guys!

Good choice on the cranks... If it's going to be something that's built to last then spend the extra I say... I just got myself into the sb130... Mixed and matched parts from my other bike.. Scoured the interwebs for deals on others and made it happen for a little over 5k.... Guess I'm on a dentist bike tho!

Cheers!

In Oz its all the tradies who can afford this stuff, get paid mega bucks for working part time lol
  • 1 0
@ctd07: no part time here... 10hrs a day plus overtime if u want it.. But big bucks in Calgary Canada if u got the right papers..
  • 2 0
@ctd07: No such luck here. 8 years of school after high school, 6 years of residency where my work week was limited by regulation to "only" 80 hours a week, 2 years of fellowship training, and 8 years in practice, all during 19 years and counting of military service, and building a small business on the side. If only I had gotten one of those "tradie" jobs where I get paid more than I'll see in a lifetime pushing numbers around on a computer. But all that work was totally worth it because now I get to bask in the butthurt when I tell PB commenters I own a Yeti.

I think that's just Finnish people being Finnish.... They're a blunt bunch. Can come across a bit mean unless they're naked in the sauna or drunk
  • 5 0
@blitz66: Yeah and they like to take the piss but are very deadpan doing it. Goto to know them to understand.
  • 3 3
@gnarterrorist: What does "take the piss" mean?
  • 1 1
 @polebicycles:

So... yes?
  • 2 1
@Svinyard: It's like taking a shit from a different hole with a different color and different, or slightly different, material state. Or, if you're a Brit...
  • 2 0
@Svinyard: Firstly, 'taking the piss' is the short form of 'taking the piss out of someone/something'. This extension may make it easier to understand. It's generally a good-humored jesting at the recipients expense. The closest American expression I can think of is 'just jerking your chain', but could extend to 'busting balls' (in the way done on, say, The Sopranos). There's also the equivalent expression 'taking the micky/mick out of someone/something' which you may have heard.
  • 1 0
I played ice hockey with several Finnish guys - all very aloof. They have an odd sense of humor though very similar to what you see in the leo videos - kind of a sly side smile flat pan.
  • 1 0
I would be really careful with concluding on how someone are (actually are) based on a few comments, without knowing their culture. I think that video said quite a lot, but until you understand Finnish Tango, how they fought the Russians, NOKIA and the geography of that country... Well, maybe just reconsider if that Pole guy is an ahole or you are just ignorant.
  • 3 0
@blitz66: We ride with a Finnish guy, he’s very quiet, but every so often he comes out with something really, really funny and everyone pisses them selves...
  • 2 0
I'm half Finnish (I'm Americanized, Illinois and U.P. Michigan Finnish communities, but never really learned Finnish) and I can say that when my grandmother (Bilingual) or great grandmother (Spoke Finn only) watched me as a kid, they were very quiet. I thought they were mean, but learned they were just kind of quiet. My uncles were very quiet too, but had some great jokes. Growing up, I was viewed as shy, quiet, an a-hole (far from it), but funny. Still viewed that way bit. All the Finn's I grew up with were very quiet as well. I can say we are very passionate, proud, stand behind our work and don't half ass anything. And sitting in a sauna is the greatest thing ever. Watch a few "Steve n Seagulls" videos, for our humor and cool music. Just saw them in concert and talked to them, short answers and very little talking between songs.

please pole open test centers in the most viisted mtb summer destinations (whistler, finale, morzine, leogang to call some). do not have to be huge, maybe 5 bikes each. many of us are curious but I think everyone will agree that it is hard to buy such an extreme_bike without even 1 test ride ;-) keep on disrupting guys. pole feels like tesla of MTB! incredible what such a small team has achieved in such a short time (AFAIK the idea of stamina was born in august 201Cool
  • 1 0
Pole has the geometry right. The steep seat tube angle, slack head angle and long wheelbase are the truth. I also like the team - interesting and innovative. LoamWolf did a great job on that hype video - much better than the previous ones. That said, these bikes are heavy and definitely downhill oriented. Which is fine, so I use mine at downhill parks and for enduro/freeride stuff (easy uphill, pushing). I have a longish trail ride tomorrow that has some legit rock gardens/drops/downhills, but I am going to take my hardtail. I'll be much slower on the hardtail, and I wish I could take the evolink but I'll be gassed halfway through. I'm planning on getting a spot mayhem next year for long ride trail duty. It looks like it is the carbon bike with the closest geo to the pole (still far off, but slacker head and steeper seat tube). For my next bike I pretty much looked for short travel carbon bike with geometry as close as possible to the pole.
  • 4 0
Don't tell that to the local guy sniping XC kom's around here on his Machine...
  • 1 1
@yzedf: It's fast uphill. I have gotten PR's going up and down the mountain - the geometry put's you in a fantastic position for climbing. It just wears on you over time, kind of a gradual creep of fatigue that I don't get on a carbon bike.

Wheelbase 1306mm

60% faster at draining your wallet and overly expensive 96% of the time. Next SL G4 is lighter and half the price.
  • 3 4
@PHeller: and next have removable pedal inserts. Just smash a rock to remove.

Cranks are a dumb place to save 100g, but if you like pole then stupid decisions may be your bag.

I think i need to make my own cause everybody keeps f’n up. Either great geo and f up suspension, or great sus and pedaling on shit geo, or some mixture. Its not that hard to do right.
  • 2 0
@Grosey: Pole has pretty rad geo. I just think $1000 cranks that leave anything on the table are silly. Then again, nobody is ripping apart Eewings like Next SLs.
  • 3 0
@PHeller: EEwings are gross excess. Yes I have a set.

Next SLs break often (I've witnessed it 2x), I broke X01s and had a ride day ruined and could have really been injured, so the fact that I would never have that failure again (what if I was on a bike vacation and it was ruined?) , and after discounts was only spending a couple hundred above a new set of carbon cranks, it was worth it to me personally.

Yes they feel very direct and are a joy. No real weight savings, which I knew going in.
  • 1 0
@SunsPSD: see I'm glad that you can admit that. Carbon cranks aren't ideal, either. Personally, I'm waiting for XTR M9100. 510g with ring vs 475g with ring for the Eewings, but much cheaper.

I got to ride an Evo link 158 this fall, it felt good but veryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy heavy. What will this one weigh?

  • 1 0
I have an evolink 158 and I love it. Killer at bike parks and for free ride/enduro riding. It is heavy af though - I weighed mine in at 35 lbs size small (I only weighed it once so it could have been incorrect, but my hardtail came in at 21 lbs so it would be weird for one to come out heavy and one light). The upright seat angle is amazing for climbing, but the weight slowly drags on you and I get tired out much more quickly. I'm hoping to get a Spot Mayhem for the light stuff and have the evolink for the heavy stuff.

 such a weird bike...
  • 3 1
Agree. I'm sure they ride super nice (which should be all that matters) but guess I'm the only one who thinks these are some of the uglier bikes out there...
  • 3 2
@covekid: Come on, you probably know that Lapierre is world champion for ugly bikes... ;-)
  • 2 1
@Franzzz: No dude, RedAlp wins all day, but only because they don't know any better, then Ellsworth because Ellsworth, then the Arbr Saker because...well maybe not because that bike is dope!

“Large Pole Stamina”.... yup I’m childish

The only thing longer than the reach on the Pole Stamina is its shock

Maybe they could build alloy sultans for dt?
  • 2 2
Their 2018 World Cup racer had to ride another brand all year long. No thanks. Bad news.

2 water bottles and Ti cranks....
  • 1 0
What.... Too many water bottle mounts!
  • 1 0
 Why no reservoir shock?
  • 5 0
It has one but the shock is turned sideways so you can’t see it.
  • 1 0
@Audican: I don't understand you can pedal like that and not have it rub your leg?
  • 4 2
@NoahColorado: Notice that no one is pedaling the bike in any of the pictures. I don't think that's a coincidence.
  • 4 2
@LeDuke: We did not take such pictures because we didn't think we need to prove there anything Smile The shock sideways is not rubbing your leg.

@polebicycles: you guys need to make a more trail friendly version with the looks of the stamina... Something that can handle all day epics and that a bigger demographic of riders would potentially purchase...

Beautiful bikes guys!
  • 3 0
@bohns1: We have a shorter travel "Stamina" on our roadmap for next year.
