Watched the Veronique Sandler edit with my daughter. Stoked to show her girls that rip. Keep it up!

 that nothing crankflip was SICK
  • 108 45
I thought hers was a close second to Brage's
  • 9 0
@adrennan: can't even wrap my head around that one
  • 11 4
The dirt jumps she made were so clean.
  • 13 1
Ya I really liked that one, but it was second to Brage's for me.
  • 20 1
Fr Veronique needs to become the face of women's MTB. Mind blown, gender aside.
  • 29 1
@msalcher: i've never seen a female ride like that. I wanted to vote her, but Barge just too much. I mean, that last monster drop was like in someone' neighborhood...like out the back door... raw uncut and x-rated
  • 90 4
@stunnanumma1: There are a number of female shredders as good. This token female entry like they've done with real ski is silly. They can easily find 4 other female rippers to put together banger edits. Its silly to judge her against these absolutely insane edits, I just hope this leads to a female category next year with Rachel Atherton, Casey Brown, Tahnee Seagrave, Micayla Gatto, etc.

@me2menow: Veronique's edit is awesome, but why should there just be one face of women's mtb? Who is the face of men's mtb?

@julesm1: aaron gwin was. Then cam zink. Probably Bruni now.

I now truly understand what it's like to judge rampage I cannot decide
  • 16 3
@me2menow: That is so far from the truth, no idea how you picked those riders and in that order....
  • 1 0
@scott-townes: this for sure. There would be plenty of content to pick from and more for me to watch
  • 7 5
@Jono-wade: It's just an opinion. He is allowed to have one that's different from yours Wink
  • 19 1
@scott-townes: Exactly! They did the same with realMoto and Vicki Golden's entry.

Veronique is obviously a very good rider and it's great that female athletes get exposure, but ideally there should be a dedicated female category. The video looked a bit out of place when compared to the other 5.
  • 29 9
@tomsgr: I’m not sure if I agree. I’m all up for women mountain bike riders getting more exposure, but in this case I feel Vero was definitely competitive! Judging from my own reactions, Brage’s edit was mindblowing, Vero’s edit made me want to go riding and the rest of the edits were a bit bland. I’m sorry to say it, but I felt like I have seen them all before.

Vero gets a solid second place from me!
  • 12 0
@NorwegianBackcountry: "I felt like I have seen them all before" I agree with that Smile

Obviously it's all subjective. For me, when I look at xgames, I expect to see the pinnacle of the sport, to see people pushing the limits of what's currently possible. Just like Rampage. I shared those videos with some of my non-MTB friends and they had the same reaction as me.

Veronique's video was good and it does make you want to go out and rip some berms. It's the only video where I could relate, since I can envision myself doing some of the stuff she did Smile but for me personally, that's not what xgames are about.
  • 4 1
@tomsgr: « It's the only video where I could relate, since I can envision myself doing some of the stuff she did»

Same, but then again who am I kidding? I will never ever be able to rip those turns with so much speed and style as she has. And that crankflip nothing was pretty sick as well!
  • 7 3
@tomsgr: It's a video contest, not a slopestyle or race contest. Now what makes a good video ? Speed and tricks ? I personnaly like creativity, and hype ! Also I like videos that are feel close to, that I can refer to, feelings that I can share when I ride my bike.
These boys made videos that are in the hollywood action movie category, they are super impressive but nothing close to what I can imagine doing on a mountainbike.
So my vote goes for Sandler, even tho she has an impressive bag of tricks !

The girls you mention are nowhere near as good, Joey Gough is.

@NorwegianBackcountry: Same here. All edits were great, but I feel like anything that Zink, Semenuk and Brandt did, Brage one-upped and did it in the rawest, gnarliest conditions. Vero's edit was so different it didn't need to be compared one to one to Brage's, but rather judged on it's own merit and I loved watching it. Danny was amazing as always, but maybe I got de-sensitized to his awesomeness. Or maybe for a contest like this trials is not dynamic or "banging" enough for me. I was looking for more speed.

Definitely between Brage and Vero for me.
  • 4 4
@tomsgr: wise words. Hers was really great riding and inspiring but possible by a lot of people. The others are the true elite.
  • 1 0
 ..
  • 2 2
@Jono-wade: I picked them in that order based on my memory of the past 5-10 years lol...
You can disagree, but its hard to argue how prominent of a marketing force they have been. Millions on millions of non-riders have seen zink's redbull run.
  • 2 1
the editing on Veronique distracted from the riding for me. she shorted herself with the tiny little cuts from multiple angles.
  • 5 0
@bananowy: @bananowy: Not sure I agree that Brage "one upped"- hold up- don't jump on me for that. All the videos were so different in their style and focus so very hard to compare apples to apples. If it was about pure technicality of tricks and precision it would be hard to fault Semenuk. I think overall though Brage best represented what mountain biking is too me- though taking it to a level that is ridiculous. The size of that banger drop, the fakie on the skinny- so damn good. His was my favorite and especially as x-games may put the sport in front of others who may not have seen it in the past. I feel bad for Brandt as his edit was by all accounts amazing- just so hard when compared head to head. Very cool videos by everyone and each on their own deserving of accolades.
  • 9 2
@NorwegianBackcountry: Vero is not competitive in this field. Be honest. She’s a great rider - an inspiration to so many, especially women and girls, but her effort would be good in your everyday 50:01/looseriders insta drop not something with the heritage and connotations of the ‘Xgames’. A feat yes, but in the same universe as these other five? No.
And don’t @ me with “you couldn’t do this/that” - I’ve done lots of crankflips and nothings, just like thousands of other riders.
Great video, great camera work/editing, great effort if there was women’s category.
  • 2 2
@scott-townes: I thought her edit was absolutely worth an entry in here, I don't see it as a token entry. Bottom line she rips, and her edit was a joy to watch.
  • 3 1
@timmigrant: it is precisely a token entry considering so many other phenomenal riders the world over - however, I do think it’s inspiration for women’s mtb.
  • 2 0
@BMcP: Question: will they be judged by their riding, the editing or the reactions the viewers get when they experience the combination of the two? No doubt Semenuk is the better rider - hell he’s even better than Brage. But, even though his edit was as polished as ever, it just didn’t do it for me.
  • 1 1

@alexrosenberry: That sounds like foie gras but produced in an enduro bro's liver instead of a ducks......

There's so much gnarly shit in each edit but Brage was years ahead in almost every shot and he topped it off with monsterous drops off a wallride and the ender being like what? 40ft. vertical? Duuuuuuuuuuuude
  • 37 0
@scott-townes: Yeah, He blended massive hucks with crazy technical and precise moves. That opener is the craziest thing I've seen in a long time! You can tell he put his heart/soul and body into this edit. Just unreal, Congratulations Brage!

@kcy4130: Remember when everyone was losing their minds with a half cab drop in Crankworxs which was what? 2-3 years ago? Brage went ahead and did it on a SKINNY at the end of a super sketchy, skinny elevation. WHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAT
  • 34 1
Not to forget the shitty weather and the muddy and freezing conditions where it was done. Utah desert is like heaven compared to this.
  • 21 1
Pronounce it Brah-ge. The "ge" sounds like the word "get" without the "t".
  • 10 0
@scott-townes: I don't know which was more savage, that wallride drop, or the massive stepdown... or all the techy tricks on wet skinnies? How does Brage not have a Red Bull helmet by now?
  • 6 0
@TobyCitret: Answer to all of those questions: I don't know. Its all mind bottling.
  • 16 0
Also there is nothing ignorant about going to the effort of learning how to pronounce someone’s name correctly. It’s commendable and you educated me and I assume a bunch of other people.
  • 5 0
@kcy4130 B-Rage is totally fine, I call him that myself.

To pronounce it in norwegian you have to pronounce the "R" as a rolling R with your tounge int the front top of your mouth (or alternatively the sharper sound in the back of your throut, depending on dialect). Other than that, as @alexrosenberry writes: Brah-guh, equal ammount of pressure on both vowels and the "e" with wide mouth, like in "bend".

His edit goes fucking hard but I had to go with Semenuk on this one. I love the editing style that mixes in a bit of photography and the tricks he brought to the table were insane
  • 2 1
I went back and watched it, because I feel I’m missing something in the overwhelming response to this edit. I just wasn’t as excited about it as everyone else was, evidently.

Not to take anything away from the guy’s riding. He’s obviously a beast. It’s just that at least 3-4 other edits spoke to me before this one did.

I feel like brandons edit is being overlooked ... Sounds dumb as f*ck to say but he has some massive hits in there. Brages edit is sick but it almost feels like people have become spoiled with brandons level of riding. That bonk to no hander is sick. The first backflip is huge but I guess his edit is compared to brages almost "overproduced"
That being said: all edits are sick and brages deserves the win, just an observation I made reading comments ... Rant over
  • 75 0
Semenuk is so clean and so dialed that the gnarliness of what he is doing gets overlooked. It’s ironic that people prefer a video where the riding is more “rough and raw”, like Semenuk would get more love if he dialed back the precision. As far as this edit, I admit it didn’t blow my mind as a complete package (no easy task anymore) but some of the moves are deceptively burly. I won’t hate on the masses choosing Brage’s, rad edit no question. But to me there’s no question who the reigning mtb wizard is.
  • 25 0
Yeah, couldn't agree more. Semenuk is at a level that nobody else can touch but what else can he do?
  • 15 0
Semenuk is great, and the tricks are incredible. What I feel like I've missed in recent edits is the sense of flow that he brings to his riding. The most impressive thing is that he maintains incredible style between the huge, groundbreaking tricks. Many of the edits feel like the one-shot from unreal in their connectedness. Like he's riding a trail and just mixing in the manoeuvres. The recent filmmaking style hasn't put the same emphasis on flow. Ultimately there is no question of his brilliance as an all-round rider, just that the recent cuts haven't been to my taste.
  • 10 0
@BiNARYBiKE @asapyohanes - totally. Semenuk is just too smooth and his builders/terrain/edit is too clean. It's the little stuff he does that you have to think about - oh shit that flip whip had a can can thrown in right before landing or the hand on the seat tailwhip then bars when you thought that was it. But then he'll throw a big one hander table that is as stylsh and smooth as BF. That off axis 720 with a bar thrown in the middle is incredible and was overlooked by me the first time I watched it. After watch number #6 I was like yeah Semenuk is still the top mtb wizard.
  • 1 0
@Headoc: I think his next step is terrain/features that have people scratching their heads. Brage's raw woods feel gave it spark where everyone including me is like Hell YEAH! And I really liked the different terrain and bikes of DJ's (that ramp launch up to the bridge was sick!) although the stuff on snow wasn't as impressive visually (I feel like I should be watching a snowboard or skier). I'd like to see Semenuk on some "video game" terrain and features. His moves are already at that level Wink
  • 42 0
I think the problem is that no one aspires to be Semenuk at this point. He's practical a god.

Brage, makes you think, "If I were twice as talented and a little drunk, maybe I could land one of those drops and be cool like him."

Semenuk is more like, 'If I were born in Whistler with Casey Brown and R-Dog for parents and then they beat me and made me practice tricks all day for two decades, then I could maybe rival Semenuk but still it's unlikely."
  • 7 0
@BiNARYBiKE: That’s a good summation. Brandon truly is the silent genius. He makes everything look so smooth and precise it really does mask the gnar of his moves. That’s the interesting part of this contest though. It’s an edit not a real life run. For pure precision and skill semenuk is really king. But for the art part of it, it leaves room for dimensions.
  • 5 0
I don't think anyone would say his edit wasn't sick, but in the context of the other entries it was just really good. Watching him throw big spins off slope jumps is kind of what we expect from him. There were others that were mind blowing. I also don't think anyone would argue with me saying that his quarry video was on another level compared to this one.

So while we're doing the "discussing unpopular opinions in a safe space" thing, I'm honestly at a loss as to how it seems that no one objects to the editing style of Brage's entry? Literally every shot, it felt like his editor was trying to one-up the rider, hellbent on disrupting our enjoyment of Brage's insane moves by chopping them short, or throwing this annoying flare effect in our faces to disrupt any sense of rhythm or flow. Brage's riding is beyond question, but I honestly found the presentation of that riding almost unwatchable. I re-watched all the vids before I voted, and was literally cringing as I forced myself to click play on his edit for the second time.
  • 4 3
@Veloscente: oh boy is your finger not on the pulse!
  • 3 0
@BiNARYBiKE: I think the problem with Semenuk is his edit was 'safe'.
  • 2 0
I thought for sure no else had a chance to win this thing after I saw Brandon was in it. It kind of felt like he was playing it safe with this edit while others were putting it all on the line. I guess he has more to lose... Almost like they took his B footage from other edits and pieced it together. He's been blowing our minds for the last 10+ years, I guess it would be hard keep doing that.
  • 3 0
@Zerozerozero: I totally agree there is a POV video on the TLD bike instagram where he links entire line from "Cascade" Love him just riding an showing the whole track. www.instagram.com/tv/CMIF7Y6h1Rp
@defconfour: I agree 100% but that just happens to be exactly what I love most about his videos. Disecting his moves is fun to me

@hisroyalgooseness: safe? He's just so smooth it looks safe? He throw some big tricks off some big mountains.
  • 8 0
@Veloscente: You’re getting downvoted for your opinion, which is perfectly valid. I don’t know if I agree with your why, but I’m also not understanding the hype around this particular edit. And as I mentioned above, it’s not that the guy is not a beast, I just didn’t enjoy the video as much as the others.

I don't think anybody noticed that the first huge flip also has another level of complexity. The lip is not even leveled if you take a close look its pointing down which makes the flip even more amazing

@JuanDPozo: Yeah I had to watch a couple of times. That first gap was HUGEEEE.
  • 2 1
Brage it´s like re-vindicating the Old Freeride Soul actualized, while Semenuk is like AI on a video game.
  • 1 0
Semenuk is undoubtedly the GOAT. Epic shots and locations. Brage's is out in the woods and snow, building in darkness and having to deliver tricks on features that are drenched because he has no choice because he lives in Norway. It really gives that hard graft feel about it which I think resonates with lots of riders. Brage's vid just nailed it and is perhaps a reflection of the type of riding people want to see more of. jmo
  • 1 0
I know. He is just so good. Like, we all know it and maybe we are just used to it, but definitely at the highest skill level.

But is he riding YT or Hyper?! Can't tell us already!?
  • 4 0
@ADGproductions: Well to start, he can't be riding for YT, so all the clips of him riding on one must have been before his contract was up or on a bike that YT let him keep. Another theory is that he has frames left over from both of his sponsorships, so he rode those for the time being. One of the clips showed him riding a raw aluminum frame with a single crown fork, which I would assume is Hyper. Just my 2 cents. All that to say, only time will tell.

I wonder if Semenuks flipy flipy style will one day will follow the trajectory of Rodney Mullen's freestyle skateboard style, that inspired many but was in a league that was beyond most mortals could hope to accomplish. Then one day the form becomes largely irrelevant because people just want to see people shred the sh*t out of a bike like Vestavik.
  • 46 0
This is what essentially happened with FMX. All the technical tricks and flippy stuff is mostly reserved for Nitro Circus and shows. Now it seems that the most popular riders are the free ride types (Bereman, Slay, etc.) just doing monster whips and riding interesting spots/setups.

That being said, Semenuk is also one of the most stylish MTBers. He could cut out the "technical" tricks and still be one of my favorite riders.
  • 26 19
I'll be honest Semenuk's edit was probably my least favorite. It is amazing smooth and technical but didn't really leave an impression on me.
  • 30 19
@93EXCivic: same old same old; nice tricks, very clean, perfect execution, but very little creativity or "atmosphere" for lack of a better term
  • 97 0

 @93EXCivic: couldn’t agree moree!
  • 52 2
Yeah. So interesting that it feels like Semenuk is almost paying the price for being TOO good. You just kind of come to expect that perfection from his edits these days which as crazy as it is to say seems somewhat boring. TBF His last rampage was great bc it was all of that skill but live which for me gave it so much more drama but in edit form I guess it’s just typical of him now. A more extreme version would be Rogatkin in that yeah, you can do a shit load of spins but for me that gets even more tired lol Idk. No doubt incredible riders and nobody can match Semenuk’s style but I find myself skipping those vids these days.
  • 5 0
@Deanosuar: well worded, that's how i meant to say it
  • 28 0
@Deanosuar: I think part of his problem is he's had so many unbelievable "60 second" and raw edits that easily could have been better entries than this. Not to say this isn't bad, but he's had better.

I also submit his one-shot segment from UnReal is the pinnacle of mtb film edits and nothing has been or will be better than it.
  • 14 0
The sketchy backyard build feel of Brage's video is just way more fun to watch, its like hes out at the local trails. Would be cool to see these top tier guys like Semenuk do a video like that, save the polished competition stuff for Red Bull.
  • 3 0
@93EXCivic: I think part of it is he makes it look so effortless.
  • 17 0
@Deanosuar: I think Danny suffers from the same thing in this comp. If I hadn't seen 10 years of Danny edits with crazy moves before this, I would be absolutely blown away. But now it's just what you expect of him
  • 2 0
@Deanosuar: You are completely correct. Nobody can even touch him on the technical aspect and precision of his tricks, but it somehow looks too easy for him. I have to watch his tricks like 5 times to actually appreciate them, and he makes it look as easy as riding down the street...
  • 1 0
@Paddock22: so true, I can’t watch fmx comps for much longer than 15 minutes but edits from Raha, Twitch etc for days.
  • 5 0
@Deanosuar: I totally agree. To me Brage's video was more enjoyable. But if we really were looking at the riding, the combos Semenuk throws WITH EASE is far better than anyone else in these vidoes. He's doing combos the other guys can't and making it look easy. He just makes it look so easy that you can miss what he's doing if you're not really watching. That last cork 720 with a bar spin in the middle of it on that huge step down was insane. Backflip, tailwhip to like a nac nac? Brage is raw, Semenuk art.
  • 2 0
@learningcycles: 100% behind you on this opinion. I was having a hard time deciding if it was Brage or Semenuk. I ultimately landed on Brage because I would like to see more of that raw greasy building in MTB these days.
  • 1 0
 @Mugen: @93EXCivic

Not cool to see Honda bros disagreeing...
  • 2 0
@learningcycles: Semenuk is so smooth and so far ahead of any other rider in terms of skill. I have zero doubt that he could do everything Brage or any of the other riders did but also make it look 5 times easier.

If Semenuk released Brages exact edit people would say his riding has become sloppy. Brandon's problem is people expect this level off of him.

Feels wrong picking a favourite. Voted for Brage but Brandt and Zink both nailed it. Didn't feel the Macaskill or Semenuk edits weren't best ever from them but considering their videos usually leave my jaw hanging open and wondering how they broke physics that seems like an impossible standard to have to live up to with every single edit lol. Veronique's edit was great too.

But I’m pretty certain that Semenuk could do what all the other riders did.
It just depends what you want to see.
If it looks a little rough and raw, you can see yourself doing a smaller version of that riding style.

The problem with Semenuk is we all know that we will NEVER be that good.
  • 9 1
Your right. No one can spend 100k to possibly win 5000
  • 1 0
Shit, I just typed out basically what you said under another comment above. So, yeah. agreed.
  • 8 0
"The problem with Semenuk is we all know that we will NEVER be that good"

Because, yeah, I watched all the other videos and my over-riding thought was "I'll be that good one day" !!!

Smile

the problem with Semenuk is we know he's the goat but we've ALL seen it before in multiple of his edits. Brage came out of NOWHERE and made the Semenuk edit look kinda boring.. that's saying something. that's why Brage deserves the win.
  • 3 0
The vast majority of us are never going to be as good as any of these guys (and girl).

Brandon Semenuk is a beautiful art form .... Danny MacAskill is a beautiful art form with humor
  • 23 8
Vero: Showing that girls can shred bikes bettet than most blokes.
Brage: chanelling Jordie and old school shore tech. (Should win)
Semenuk: Take every Red Bull RAW 100 and remix, rinse and repeat. Viewing is getting old.
Zink: Pure OG rider. Nuff said.
Danny: idea is 5 years too late. Innovative yes, but not real MTB, just trials.
Brandt: New School and on his was up.

Now let the hate toward me flow forth.

Use your anger boy. Let the hate flow through you!

i agree with everything you say except for Danny, he is a legend and deserves more credit.

Which X Games Real MTB Edit is Your Favorite and why exactly Brage Vestavik?
  • 16 2
I see I’m in a small minority... I much prefer Semenuk’s precision and technicality over the other guys’ rawness and amplitude. (All awesoem edits, for the record.)
  • 1 0
Semenuk is sooo textbook, it plays against him sometimes it seems. So precise. Not bitching also, they are all awesome vids
  • 10 0
Veronique has that amazing, almost relatable video, Danny's one is incredibly beautiful as usual from him, and then there's Brave. You watch it and you're like "WTF did I just see??".

All the other feel cute next to his, sorry but there's not contest here

Each and every one is a mind blowing rider. The video shots were top notch. I give a 6 way tie!

They were all so good! We need more of this.

I think Brage's video had the most creativity and the most 'feel'. The only thing that hold's me back is that I think Brandon could have done everything everyone else did (minus a few of Danny's moves) and that no one could have done what Brandon did. I don't know if that is enough to vote for him - the whole package is what matters here.
So tough!
  • 1 0
I've read a few places that Brandon could do what everyone else did, maybe he could, but Zink sent some insanely risky features with tricks that took his edit to a level of risk and confidence that none of the others touched. Other riders might be able to do it but dont because of what I assume is the risk, I would say Zink is pushing limits vs other people adding modifiers to tricks.

@howsyourdad: Thanks that's good to know. I discussed the edits with my wife this evening and we came to the conclusion that what makes Brage's film so great is not just the riding but because it is an outstanding example of Norwegian film noir. As anyone who frequented film festivals in the late 90's and saw for example the original 1997 Insomnia with Stellan Skarsgard, (not the 2002 Al Pacino American remake), will know, in Norwegian drama may contain barely concealed surrealism, where nothing is ever as it seems and indeed everyone in the unassuming but ultimately terrifying town may have been in on the murder of the teenage girl. Here, we have, in one minute and thirty seconds, fear, water, mud, logs in the air, screaming, an axe, snow, silence, darkness, further screaming, fire and and 40 foot sender down an inexplicable clear cut next to a housing tract into a glorious puddle topped off with more screaming. Notice how the snow in Brage's film perfectly exacerbates the knot in our stomach from contemplating a 180 off that insane aerial log, where it instantly makes us understand how cold and slick the conditions are, whereas in MacAskill's edit, the snow is totally Good King Wenceslas. The other edits are all great in their way but they don't tap into our emotions the way Brage's does.
  • 1 2
@The-Foiling-Optimist: Good point. This movie would work great with Norwegian Metal as well as with Wardruna that did soundtrack for Vikings series (aaaaand used to be Gorgoroth in the past...). I mean... there aren't many edits anymore which warrant use of metal. Not that I listen to Metal much. i don't. . This is an atmosphere, feel that you just can't fake, it's extremely authentic also thanks to how down to Earth these guys are letting their riding and trail work speak (while having tons of fun and emanate with it) Brage and his Dad are damn legends. it's a joy to see them in the bike park.

Somehow Scandinavians managed to keep it out of kitch zone and haven't commercialized their folklore. at least on their ground. I am extremely curious to come to Canada and see how indigenous culture manifests itself in the surroundings. Other European countries, certain areas, have definitely prostituted their local culture to bigger extent, like some parts of Italy, Bavaria in Germany or "Highlands" of Poland or Scotland.

Brage ride is aggressiv, but in terms of style and skill it’s semenuk. And if you can’t decide between the two, choose Danny.
  • 6 0
For me, Brage takes it because of what the contest was, in a competition Semenuk would have blown everyone out of the water, but the title is "Real MTB". I think Semenuk and the others to some degree feel like a dream and almost mechanical. Brage's feels raw and is just an evolution of mountain biking, with insane creativity, precision jibs, and crazy hucks.
  • 7 1
Brage did some insane stuff for sure, but I can't help but feel that some of his stuff looks crazier than it is because he rides so damn sketchy lol. Guy needs to figure out his rebound damping. Meanwhile we have become completely desensitized to the stuff Brandon is throwing out there. He's going absolutely massive too but makes it look so smooth and easy that we feel like he isn't even pushing himself. When I watch Brage it looks like he's on the edge of exploding. That being said still voted for him as it's nice to see a fresh face.

Cant bring myself to pick a winner. All incredible ! I will say that I am probably the most inspired by Vero.. .Man I just wanna rip a berm like that so bad! Semenuk is poetry in motion.. That one handed table is the shot of the whole lot for me. Brage is a beast! He's like the Chuck Norris of MTB. I think he chewed up rocks and spit out the dirt for these jumps! Zink is a total legend.. Think of what this guy has done for the sport.. Here from the start and still on top
  • 7 2
MacAskill had the most creative tricks and best filming and editing, but I'm going to give it to Zink because he had the biggest actual "mountain" lines, plus extra points for the awful alt-metal soundtrack for the authentic 2001 New World Disorder freeride vibe.
  • 5 0
All these vids were ridiculous, and super impressive. The difference is most of these I was thinking "Oh, sick! awesome riding!" While with Brage's I was thinking "I'm sorry, you just did what now?"

Closest thing Ive ever seen to a Sean Burns edit on an MTB. 666 Thumbs up.
  • 1 0
Was my first thought, Sean Burns from Anthem 2 makes same impression!
  • 5 0
What an absolute treat. I can't believe we get these edits not only free but easily accessibly and without horrible branding all over them for the most part. (watching Axell Hodges real moto part feels like an advert for monster energy and misogyny for instance)
  • 1 0
Axell's moto edits are some of the most progressive things out there. Can't blame him and the team for blasting his sponsors everywhere, end of the day it's what pays his bills and helps the dream of making these edits come true. Without Monster, Redbull, Rockstar etc a lot of these incredible edit wouldn't exist, or certainly not with the type of polished production we've come to expect. FYI, Redbull Kluge is still one of the best edits I've ever seen, and not possible without Redbull.
  • 1 0
@Freakyjon: I understand that the sponsorships pay the bills, it is refreshing not to have it shoved in your face though.

No question Axell Hodges is fantastic on a moto and his dad's money allows him to build some really cool features.

It doesn't excuse the "hey, look at this model in her Monster Energy branded underwear who's arse I am going to spank before I go and do cool jumps" side of his videos though. I am sure 13 year old boys love that but it is super embarrassing for an adult to think that's cool.
  • 2 0
@Patrick9-32: Unfortunately that's just the way it is now. Even in these X-Games edits there's an element of it. Danny's edit for instance has far too many cuts zooming in on the frame etc, ensuring Santa Cruz get there spotlight. Honestly that is just as bad, but like I said it just the way it is and honestly always has been.

FYI the 'model' in Axell's edit is his girlfriend.
  • 4 0
2 or 3 years ago any one of these would win hands down. I can't believe that I am bored of seeing Semenuk and Danny doing shit that 2 years ago blew my world apart. I think next years the winner will be require to do a 75 foot gap jump between 2 skinnys coated in grease to impress me.
  • 7 1
It’s called “Real MTB” and this guy gets out of a Lambo and then gets towed in to almost every trick in his edit. Does DJ Brandt know that you can pedal a bike?
  • 2 1
Such an annoying edit. Couldn't stand the vibe.
  • 4 0
To everyone who is saying Brandon's riding style is so clean. He's made some "dirty" raw edits. His segment with the Chainsaw on some pretty raw rake and ride and his Utah segment in Revel in the Chaos. Brandon is hands down the best mountain biker all around. I do think Brage's edit is really good. Its totally got a midevil feel, and my collar bone hurt after watching and listening to those landings. I'm a huge fan of Vero and her segment was so cool, I just wanted to go ride. Brandon's segment is just like....HTF, WTF and geeeeez. Can't pick a clear winner, but with just what you can do on a bike, Brandon Semenuk takes it.
  • 6 0
I can't recall which one was my favorite, but I remember it was "Must Watch"!
  • 6 0
I was pleasantly surprised by DJ Brandt’s edit. But I’d still give it a second to Brage
  • 5 2
I really wanted to like Brage's the best I just don't get as excited with the build shots. On the other hand he's never been my favorite even though I've always liked and appreciated what Cam has done for the sport, I thought his edit was bang on. Apparently others haven't felt the same way, oh well. Thanks guys for the great content and best of luck to all.
  • 6 2
I was definitely entertained by the Brage edit, different , fresh and very hesh. BUT there is no way it can compete with Semenuk , I think we are just too desensitized to Semenuks skill & style at this point.
  • 7 1
I think a lot of you missed the details in DJ Brandts edit. I would say it’s second to Brage’s.
  • 9 1
 I vote Kris Kyle
  • 6 0
 Brage absolutely killed it IMO....
  • 6 0
maybe Elon can claim mars but he'll never claim freeride as Brage did!!!
  • 5 0
Brage takes it for me. That was bonkers. Semenuk was a close second, so perfect and polished.
  • 6 0
Not surprised by the preliminary results. But DJ's opener was crazy.
  • 3 1
Brage's was sweet and had a raw, rugged feel to it...but Semenuk does a lot of that stuff on a damn DJ and its SO smooth that he makes it look easy. Hell he's like 360/720'ing huge stuff not just throwing a trick in there. Brage makes the stuff look gnarly and hard...Brandon just makes it all look easy, maybe to a flaw.
  • 2 0
These were all really good in the way that you can watch them several times and see more and more, and the music is all good. Brage has to take it due to mud, darkness and sheer nordic terror and also thanking his dad and grandpa in the credits.
  • 4 2
Brage, DJ, Veronica, Cam, Semenuk then Danny. Cam would have been higher, but the shots were just bland, Im probably on my own here, but the Utah desert can be boring AF if not filmed right. It also feels weird to put Danny and Semenuk at the end but they just didnt compare to the others.

I was thinking I was alone on this. Was thinking the same thing

Wow -As of 2:30pm pst Brage has waaaay more votes than everyone else COMBINED ......... and you can be 100% certain the X-Games judges will be scoping out what the “online chatter” thinks of each edits before they decide - just like the Real X-Games Moto
  • 4 0
It appears that it is a two part contest. X-games will have a judged and a fan-decided contest. Everyone should go to XGames.com/RealMTB and vote to cast the actual fan-decided vote

Alternate title: "Viking slays energy drink riders (and Vero)" I've been thinking, why just one women? I get that its the first one and they are "testing the waters" but they could've invited Casey? Vaea? Martha Gill? Bex? Call me a conspiracy nut but it seemed a bit too rigged towards energy drink riders and felt like they just threw Brage and Vero as a last resource, little did they know...
  • 2 0
What Brandon throws is impressive but it doesn't really matter where he throws them; It's just a pretty backdrop. With Barge, where and what he's riding is just as impressive, if not more, then the tricks he's doing.
  • 1 0
I feel like Brage's edit was the only one that felt like previous 'Real' contests. All the other sections (while still showing incredible riding) feel like they could have been any other minute-long MTB edit. If you've checked out previous Real Snow or Real Ski edits I think Brage's section managed to capture that style and feeling.

As well as having some of the most balls-out riding I've seen in my life. Pretty sure that last drop is what annihilated his foot - still landed it.
  • 4 3
 My ranking goes like this:
1) Danny MacAskill- his skills are so impressive and diverse. I think the music chosen suits the clip quite well.
2) Barge Vestavik- Never heard of him but this edit was on point. I like seeing it go wrong in the opening sequence.
3) Veronique Sandler- Awesome to see a girl doing these things. Way better than I am and they deserve equal coverage.
4) Cam Zink- Awesome rider, best music of the lot (personal opinion).
5) DJ Brandt- Again, I have never heard of him but it is a solid clip.
6) Brendon Semenuk- Underwhelmed by this clip. I feel it only shows 60% of what he is actually capable of.
  • 4 0
Which is funny, because Semenuk did a bunch of world firsts in his edit, and that first clip was absolutely massive. They probably should have given that clip a couple more angles/ time. As people have been saying, it's like we have become numb to his unmatchable skill. Like when Lewis Hamilton wins an F1 race haha
  • 1 0
I just watched them all back-to-back and it was like watching a banger dvd of great rider sections! The tunes and different feel of each part is great and the all fit together so well. Vero's part reminded me of Atwill's segment in Gamble.
  • 1 0
zinks flat drop was nuts, but that russian viking dude came out of nowhere and absolutely blew my face off. the half cab skinny to drop, followed by the biggest wallride send ive ever seen, ending with a steve romo sized send at the end....just gnarly.
  • 1 0
In my humble opinion the best overall edit is the brage one, but that cam zink flip from the house was the scariest thing i have see in this2021, was raddddddd for sure i would put him in the 2 spot. Love this X games format hope we see more of this the next years but with more riders and longer videos.
  • 1 0
Fully thought I’d be voting Semenuk but Brage killed it, reminded me of the early north shore videos. Sick.
DJ impressed me with his edit I don’t really follow him but he killed it, Vero’s was sick made me want to ride my bike.
  • 1 0
That was tough! I was torn between Brage Vestavik and Danny MacAskill. Danny had some super tech, out of the box stuff with the log hops, to jumping off the bike over the limb to the front flip! Brages' edit was just nasty, those hucks were unreal! That last drop was HUGE, I'd go as far as saying that was bigger than Gee in Slate Line!
  • 3 0
Didn't like the idea of voting on whose is best. I loved all the segments. Thanks XGames and all the riders for showing us some epic riding.
  • 1 0
When I 've seen Brage, I was blown away. You can't deny the quality of each edits and even if it's unfair we always judge riders in comparison of what they have done before. I did appreciate some gritty old school urban vibe for Cam and DJ but there is nothing new in Brandon perfect execution. Rampage landscape have seen again and again. I was expecting more creativity in the tricks, the setting. Brage creativity is thru the roof. almost everything was done in a really innovative way. Vero edit is also. super sweet and relatable.
  • 1 0
I've got to say, I think I enjoyed Dj's edit the most. For whatever reason, it was the edit that I had an urge to watch for a second time. However, for this competition, I have to vote for Brage. My reasoning for this is that I felt like he put in the most work digging something unique, and his edit will put a lasting impression on people outside of the sport. I loved watching all of the edits, but I think RealMTB is focused on progression of the sport, and I saw that in Brage's edit the most.
  • 1 0
There's a lot of talk about Semenuk vs Brage but one thing I don't see being mentioned is that this isn't solely a riding competition - it's also a video edit competition. The video itself - camerawork, angles, music, editing - is all part of the criteria. The filmer also get a medal in this event.

Semenuk definitely did some things nobody else on this lineup could do, but (& this is completely subjective) I wasn't a big fan of the editing style & music in Semenuk's vid.
The music was very passive, and the camera shots ate up precious time that could've possibly been used for another stunt or 2.

Meanwhile, the music in Brage's vid and the more raw look add to the overall feel of his clip a lot.
Brage takes the cake in my opinion.

Man, such a tough call (for me) between Brandon and Brage. Brandon was big and smooth with some nice tech while Brage had serious heart, big risky moves and overall raw feel to it. Incredible submissions to say the least!

Semenuk's was sooo boring :/ Watching those comlicated tricks in perfect frames and landscape is becoming like watching olympic figure ice skating. I know it's diffucult and technical but meh, so what? I can't relate to it at any level

IMO it seems like Semenuk's footy was more b-role of other stuff he has filmed. Which is insane. But Brage's edit is raw and metal...no question in my mind it is the winner.

Based on some very rough ruler to screen measurements on a picture in the Norwegian mtb magazine, and assuming Brage is about 1.80cm, somewhere between 11m-13m/36-42ft vertical drop. +/- something.

Brage bringing the raw freeride we all miss! Felt like watching an NWD segment from 2004/05. Big and Gnarly!

I feel like Brage needs to be on a transition bottlerocket to complete the circle of Freeride popularity in MTB

Danny MacAskill all the way. Poetic, smooth, outrageous.

Ok ok Brage's edit is rad... but what is that in the background at 1:22?

A bunch of mortals judging GODS of mountain biking. Honestly they all win and we can just wallow in their light.

The Vero one could easily have fit into NWD8 with a couple Luchador shots and that really sealed the deal for me.

DJ Brandt had the most original moves here imho. They just missed it with the music a bit, but that is just taste.

Brage it´s like re-vindicating the Old Freeride Soul actualized, while Semenuk is like AI on a video game.
