POV Video: Jesse Melamed's Winning Run in the Sloppiest Conditions - EWS Zermatt 2020

Aug 31, 2020
by Sarah Moore

bigquotesHere is stage 1 and 2 from the EWS in Zermatt, 1st on stage 1 and 3rd on stage 2. Enjoy the mouth breathing! I do wipe my camera too!

The course was shortened due to the brutal conditions and evac concerns so I can fit the whole day in one video.

Unreal that when he's working that hard, he's still got the presence of mind to wipe the camera. Thanks for all the great POV stuff you put out Jesse and congratulations on the win.

I mean that was so considerate of him to look after his fan's enjoyment by keeping the lens clean while putting down some blistering runs. Great job Jesse and thanks for the content.

@lifeofloon: he is an animal... but also a cheater.. that was not the track I raced somehow , impossible ; ) hahahaha. cheers.

 It's a habit now. Thanks!

Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy! Most fan-friendly pro out there. Congrats on the win!
  • 5 0
Only legends wipe their camera on a race run.
  • 57 0
Very slippery. But in Jesse's case, the bikes seems to only slip forward.

Nice-guy-Canadian miraculously remembers to wipe the camera lens... Incredible riding and enduring strength!

As a lay-man, I have a hard time telling the difference between Enduro and DH at this point... other than fork crowns. That track looked rougher than some of the WC DH tracks.. or am I just crackers?
  • 25 0
I'd say average speed. While our course may look the same and in some places be as fast, DH is just overall faster.

Never take a phone call with one of Jesse's onboard vids playing in the background... just rhythmic heavy breathing and squelching noises mixed in with a few whistles and some yelling.
  • 9 0
 hahaha it's a good time.
  • 32 1
@JesseMelamed did you just pull a tear off on your GoPro? That's some next level pro athlete shit.
  • 10 0
Then takes off goggles and still hangs on to them on the bars.

Crazy. How did he control his front brake after that? Or does he ride Moto?
  • 6 0
haha just a real solid wipe on that one.
  • 5 0
@fabwizard: I just let the goggles fly around on my bars.
  • 1 0
 @JesseMelamed: Congrats on the win.

What do you think, did Crankworks help?
  • 27 0
Wow. That had to be one of the most impressive runs I've ever seen. So happy for Jesse, he deserves it!
  • 12 0
 Thanks!
  • 2 0
That could be called kinda a champery of enduro run...
  • 5 2
@PauRexs: Nowhere near as perfect as Danny's Champery run.
  • 3 0
@JesseMelamed: In a 7min half blind run you can be super proud how perfect you nailed! Proove is there! Wink
  • 19 0
just insane athleticism to hold that pace that long in this conditions. WOW
  • 2 0
Unreal isn't it. It's insanely hard to keep it up for a even a minute in these conditions and I can't ride anywhere near the pace that these guys manage.
  • 10 0
 Lots of training paying off!
  • 11 0
I'm out ff breath watching and listening to this. Way to go Jesse. You're a beast and very, very well done.
  • 5 0
 Thank you!
  • 11 0
Looks like he firms up the shock at the 11:27 mark just before the flow section?
  • 7 0
nah, he is just resetting the o-ring , checking the sag and cleaning the shaft...
  • 19 0
I did! Because I ran the coil for the mud I knew it would be less efficient for all the pedalling so I made sure it lock it out.
  • 9 0
I've hit wet rocks at that speed...Didn't go well for me.
  • 8 0
 Me too!
  • 9 0
Pretty good ad for that new Maxxis mud tire
  • 7 0
 I'd agree eh @Maxxis
  • 5 0
What a guy! Looks like he's going absolute warp speed in some of those gnarly sections - probably faster than most would dare in dry conditions. And oh boy that rock-drop line choice in the middle of the second stage! What an intense run
  • 8 0
I am pretty exhausted just watching that...
  • 6 0
I started that thinking “18 minutes? Who’s gonna watch 18 minutes of GoPro race footage??” Amazing riding Jesse! Now rehydrate with a nice glass of trailbuilder tears.
  • 6 0
Seemingly unaffected by the conditions, unless you saw him do it in the dry... that was fast
  • 8 0
the saying goes "ride it like it's dry"
  • 4 0
@JesseMelamed: Great tactic to ride so fast the mud can't get stuck to you.
  • 8 0
 This dude's not human.
  • 4 0
Pretty much no sight on top of the mountain on stage 2. He must have memorized the trail really well. How many practice runs do they have?
  • 1 0
 One per stage
  • 4 0
@captaindingus: i ride dh and after hearing that i never ever want to race enduro, thank you very much
  • 1 0
Most of them will have GoPro footage of the tracks from practice which they study before the race
  • 7 0
Like these guys said, one practice lap but we do gopro it so we can watch it afterwards and get a feel for the trail.
  • 1 0
@JesseMelamed: thanks for the reply Jesse and congratulations!
  • 3 0
I would love to see his heart rate monitoring data.

They say enduro stages are so long you can't go 100% the whole time but wow, by the sound of his breathing he was going all out for 7mins straight.

Unreal
  • 13 0
You may not be going 100%, but your HR is pretty much maxxed. I was at 95-100% max heart rate for this whole run.
  • 1 0
@JesseMelamed: What is you your max HR for efficiency? How were you able to test for this?
  • 3 0
@mbosko7: I wear a HR strap all of the time so I know what my HR is. For racing I'm not thinking about what my max HR is for efficiency, I just go at a pace that I can hold and then afterwards I can see where my HR was at.
  • 2 0
Very nice! Congrats! The guy is really fit! Seriously, the part that blew my mind the most was the uphill asphalt sprint. Judging by his breath just before that part, it must have been Very painful to add such an effort when you already very deep in the red. Wow!
  • 3 0
Is he using The Force to see where to go for the first half? Madness! Respect! Need to lie down and rest after watching that.
  • 3 0
Brilliant vid, hard to imagine that kind of speed on some of those lines. I am doing my first ever enduro race this weekend, so inspiration indeed.
  • 5 0
I guess I just have to go way faster, ya that’s the secret!
  • 4 0
Jesse made this wannabe Canadian very proud. That was amazing riding. Way to go!
  • 2 0
Hopefully not his last win this year. When Jesse don´t go 110% flat out and risk crashing, he is top 4 no matter if Hill & Rude is back.
  • 3 0
pretty mad how quiet the bike runs; no hub whizz, no chain chatter, no brake squeal - not that he touched is brakes much
  • 2 0
Amazing control, that section on stage one that was apparently straight down was insane. So many places you could have been tripped up, crazy fast riding.
  • 1 0
That was intense. Impressive commitment through the fast wooded sections before the flow trail, especially in those conditions.
  • 2 0
So sick! I found the mistakes interesting though... and how fast he recovers & gets back up to speed.
  • 2 0
Really enjoyed that view. Felt like I was riding. Congratulations, and thanks!
  • 2 0
Wow. That was intense. 18 mins of flat out action. Great footage.
  • 2 0
And when can I buy this bicycle?
  • 1 0
hopefully after he's done with the ews
  • 2 0
You had me at "enjoy the slip & slide"... Salute
  • 1 0
WOW ! Strong laps like this makes children wanna be Captain Jesse! And us weekend warrios like childrens. Good job !
  • 1 0
Malamed mindset: ok jesse, it's just like when you forget to bleed the brakes, do not touch them, it's dangerous!
  • 1 0
WTF Jesse how did you just turn off the slipperyness? You sure make it look easy!
  • 1 0
Those were true”GIVER”runs Jesse... do CANADA PROUD kid,,????
  • 1 0
Incredible riding would really like a bike check and to know his set up.
  • 1 0
I can’t ride like that for a minute let alone 15! Dayum!!!
  • 1 0
Jesse bike check? Was he on slayer or altitude
  • 1 0
 Congratulations Jesse! Well earned mate!
  • 1 0
